Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Creating a horror prequel is trickier business than a sequel. The rules are far less rigid in sequels, with expanded body count and lore most often being the primary goals. But a horror movie prequel has the tougher needle to thread in ensuring all of its pieces nestle neatly within the previously established framework without contradicting any details.
This week brings the arrival of The Omen prequel, The First Omen, charting the events leading up to Antichrist Damien Thorn’s adoption. It makes for the perfect excuse to revisit horror prequels that successfully earned their spot in their franchises through unique shifts in setting, tone, and style without veering too far off the beaten path.
This week’s streaming picks highlight horror movie prequels that get weird or dial up the horror in intense ways while further fleshing out familiar characters and storylines.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The WGA strike of 2023 has created a fortunate side effect. While writers demanded better pay from studios -- as well as a guarantee that they would not be replaced by clunky automated writing machines -- many films and TV shows halted production. Without writers, the Hollywood system ground slowly to a halt. When the strike was resolved, production began again, but it left a 148-day gap in most studios' production schedules. To fill the gaps, some studios have adopted an ingenious approach: merely re-release some of their biggest hits from years past, allowing audiences to see some of their favorite movies on the big screen again.

Following the outsized PG-13 success of both M3gan with its frightening robotic doll and then Five Nights at Freddy’s with its animatronic rock band, Blumhouse has now settled on a familiar childhood companion, a seemingly innocent stuffed bear named Chauncey, to deliver carefully calculated chills in Imaginary. It is a formula that sheds the R-rated explicitness from the horror genre, something Blumhouse knows well, and makes it more palatable for a younger audience not just in ratcheting down the bloodletting, but also in bringing it to a level kids might relate to. And what better than putting familiar playthings at the center of the action, in every case guaranteed to stir up our demons and make us jump out of our seats.
There is no reason to believe that Imaginary won’t also succeed, and this one from director and co-writer Jeff Wadlow (Truth Or Dare) delves deeper into psychological terror,...

On the 8th day of Creepmas, we’re celebrating the Victorian holiday tradition of sharing ghost stories. Telling ghost stories during winter was a folk custom that dated back centuries but slowly faded over time. Any tradition that involves scaring each other with horror stories feels like one worth reviving, so today’s Creepmas festivities embrace holiday horror movies that center around ghosts and hauntings. The eight titles below run the gamut from inducing warm holiday feels to ghostly insanity to chilling terror.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 8 Christmas ghosts to haunt your holiday season.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Dead End is the embodiment of the old saying “road to nowhere.” In this 2003 horror movie, one unlucky family’s annual trip to grandma’s house doesn’t go according to plan. What awaits these unsuspecting characters is a series of events that will steer them straight into the unknown. It’s one hell of a Christmas in this macabre holiday tale, which stirs up uncertainty and unrest as the pavement stretches on forever.
Dead End first showed up on video-store shelves around 2004 after enjoying great success at multiple film festivals. Made on a low budget of less than a million dollars and with a small cast of actors, this California-shot yet French-financed horror-comedy has, strangely enough, yet to be reissued on a physical media format higher than DVD. Nevertheless, it remains a cult favorite all these years later. The colorful dialogue, the progressively unnerving atmosphere, and the ensemble of...

It may seem hard to believe, but the Insidious franchise is getting long in the tooth! The first Insidious movie was released all the way back in 2010, kickstarting an unlikely string of movies under the watchful eye of Saw horror duo Leigh Whannell and James Wan.
At first, the franchise focused on the Lambert family, whose move to a new home coincided with their son Dalton falling into a mysterious coma. They soon found out that it wasn’t their home that was haunted, but their family. Thanks to the Lamberts’ ability to astral project their consciousnesses, they can access “The Further”, a purgatory dimension where they’re at risk of attracting restless spirits, demonic and otherwise.

Another spooky season has come and very nearly gone. The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter (and colder), and it's time to start gearing up for the annual end-of-year rush of awards players. Not that that's any reason to stop the scary times from going. If you're like me, you'll probably spend the first part of November just catching up on all the spine-chilling entertainment you had intended to get to in October (there's just too darn much to cram into a single month -- I only barely got started on the new "Goosebumps" series). Of course, if you'd prefer to get a head-start on the winter holidays, you could instead tune in to Max, which will be adding plenty of beloved festive titles over the next few weeks, and much more.
Here are our top picks for November, along with everything else that's coming to the streamer that month.

In the world of film, you will have icons that appear with a few manufactured into something better than they are. The Net and the Hollywood star system of the past do that today with some questionable ability and content on both sides of the camera being hailed as something special. The icons of the horror genre rise to the top like Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Their names are often above titles of films even reduced to the use of the surname as in Karloff and Lugosi without losing box office appeal. Entering this realm is the feature documentary of actor Robert Englund simply called Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.
I honestly was not a huge Freddy fan towards the end of the A Nightmare On Elm Street series of films because for me the stories became set pieces for effects.

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering 2001 Maniacs was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Robert Englund doing a demented Colonel Sanders impression. Lin Shaye putting on a deadly song and dance routine. Enough politically incorrect elements to offend pretty much everybody. Buckets of gore. Gratuitous nudity. And a cameo appearance by Eli Roth, playing his Cabin Fever character. Put all of this together and you get 2001 Maniacs (watch it Here). The director calls it a “splatstick” movie. Splatter combined with slapstick comedy. We call it The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Herschell Gordon Lewis was a classy guy, but he specialized in making movies that were not classy. His aim was to give the grindhouse and drive-in crowds the things Hollywood wasn’t giving them. Noting...

It edged the worldwide cume of Blumhouse’s own M3GAN ($180.8M) which is now the No. 2 horror title of 2023 to date. After five years, “Insidious” is taking fans to the Further once more with “Insidious: The Red Door.” The latest installment is now available on Digital, which means now is the perfect time to catch up on the creepy franchise (or experience it for the first time). Beginning with “Insidious” in 2010, the horror films center around a family who finds themselves haunted by demons from another realm, along with the people who try to help them.
Created by horror veteran Leigh Whannell (who also created the “Saw” franchise along with James Wan), each installment of the “Insidious” takes viewers deeper into the Further, a nightmarish dimension populated by tortured spirits and ruled over by a malevolent demon. “The Red Door” will be the fifth installment in the franchise, and will once again focus on the Lambert family, with Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins all reprising their roles from the first two films.

The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. It was commercialized sometime later and of course; it’s showed up as a device in horror movies ever since. The Witchboard series that started in 1986 is probably the most popular series that features the spirit communicator but another, more straightforward series called Ouija is also out there. If you’re anything like me, you probably haven’t given too much thought to what happened to the Lambert family after the end of 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2. After all, their story seemed to have come to a definitive close, and even the filmmakers didn’t seem to particularly care since they continued the franchise with two prequels. But since horror films are money in the bank even in the post-pandemic theatergoing era, now comes Insidious: The Red Door, which revisits the original characters ten years later. You won’t be surprised to hear that they’re not doing very well.
Well, Renai (Rose Byrne) seems okay, since she had the good sense to divorce Josh (Patrick Wilson, who makes his directorial debut with this purportedly final installment) after he tried to kill her and the children. When it comes to horror movies at the box office, Sony resurrected its track record this past weekend with the opening of Blumhouse/Stage 6 Films’ fifthquel, Insidious: The Red Door which had a $32.65M domestic opening, $64M Worldwide debut.
On the domestic front, that’s the second best horror opening for Sony after 2004’s The Grudge which debuted to $39.1M. It’s also the second best domestic debut for an Insidious movie after Chapter 2‘s $40.2M opening. Even more amazing, this 13-year-old horror franchise stole the No. 1 thunder away from Disney/Lucasfilm’s legacy sequel Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which only did $26.5M in weekend two.
While Sony pre-pandemic had horror sleepers such as Don’t Breathe and Escape Room, the Culver City lot wasn’t reaping the riches of genre post Covid like Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros. Now, Sony has posted a U.S./Canada start...

Sunday Am Writethru after Saturday update: Post Covid, there are a lot of studios that have been able to make horror work at the box office, including Paramount with Smile, Warner Bros with Evil Dead Rise, and Universal with M3GAN and The Black Phone.
But not Sony. Until now.
Red Door is opening to $32.65M this weekend, the second-best start in the Insidious franchise after Chapter 2′s $40.2M, entombing Indiana Jones in second place with a $26.5M second weekend. Red Door also reps the best start in the last two years for a PG-13 horror movie. More pom-poms for Sony: their Marvel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just outstripped Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 as the highest-grossing movie of the summer, $357.6M to $357.5M.
For Blumhouse, Red Door is its 16th title to open at No. 1. While tentpoles get all the glory in the post-Covid marketplace,...

Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise, is now in theatres (you can read our review Here). A spin-off, Thread: An Insidious Tale, is already in the works… and producer James Wan, who also directed the first two Insidious movies, has implied that there could be many more Insidious spin-offs in our future. One franchise cast member who has ideas for further Insidious sequels or spin-offs is Lin Shaye, who has played psychic medium Elise Rainier throughout the series. Speaking with Screen Rant, Shaye said she might start working with her son to put together a treatment and/or lookbook so she can pitch those ideas to the powers that be.
Shaye said, “I have some ideas, I’ve thought about doing a little treatment with some thoughts I have about where (Elise) is in The Further, what she could be doing in The Further.

“Insidious” is a strange franchise in that it has often been overshadowed by James Wan’s other Patrick Wilson-starring supernatural haunting series (“The Conjuring”). Also, after two installments from Film District and another two from Comcast, “Insidious: The Red Door” comes courtesy of Sony. They are certainly pulling their weight if Thursday previews are any indication.
The Patrick Wilson-directed installment is the first present-tense sequel since “Insidious: Chapter 2” in 2013 as “Chapter 3” in 2015 and “The Last Key” in 2018 were prequels giving a spotlight to Lin Shaye’s ghostbuster. Absence has apparently made the heart grow fonder, as this one nabbed $5 million in Thursday previews. For reference, the last three “Insidious” films earned $5.18 million in Thursday previews *combined*.
The Sony/Screen Gems/Stag 6/Blumhouse entry, set a decade after “Insidious: Chapter 2” and serving as a quasi-legacy sequel for the main haunted Lambert family, pulled a better Thursday figure than...

There’s a moment in “Insidious: The Red Door” that encapsulates why the movie isn’t more insidious. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), the father from the first two “Insidious” films (this one is number five), has just dropped his son off for his freshman year at college. The son, Dalton, is once again played by Ty Simpkins, who was just a spooked kid in the earlier films; now he’s a spooked surly emo art student draped in hippie hair. Eight years ago, Dalton and his father were hypnotized so that they would lose all memory of the Further, the spirit zone Dalton got sucked into. The hypnosis worked; they’ve forgotten the living nightmares they saw. But now the visions are coming back.

The 5th installment in the Insidious cinematic universe is here, and we return to the Lambert family nine years later. We’ve been following these movies for 13 years now, and while some are definitely hits, others, not so much. Still, it’s an overall extremely enjoyable franchise that has us coming back for more. Unlike something like The Conjuring, in this one, we have three movies dedicated to one family, which is why we might be more attached to the entire Insidious universe. Even without the family, the recurring characters are great fun and always a delight to watch. Special shoutout to Elise, one of the most revered psychics in mainstream horror while also being over 70. Today we’ll be ranking the movies from worst to best based on the story, the grit, the violence, and the love because, ultimately, that’s the power that can save you. Just kidding,...

Lin Shaye Reflects on Elise Rainer’s Franchise Legacy Ahead of ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ [Interview]
Actor Lin Shaye’s memorable introduction as psychic Elise Rainer in 2011’s Insidious quickly established the character as a franchise mainstay. Sony Pictures is heading back into The Further with Insidious: The Red Door, set to release in theaters on July 7, and we can expect to see Elise in some form.
What’s an Insidious movie without the tough-as-nails Elise, after all?
Especially as the horror franchise returns to the Lambert family in Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson. Family secrets will be revealed as the Lamberts return to The Further again, encountering demons from the past and brand new terrors.
In the film, “To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before.”

Since the release of James Wan’s original fright flick, Insidious, I’ve been excited about the franchise. The 2010 feature offered an incredible cast with Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, and Lin Shaye. It also managed to bring on the spooks in entertaining ways. And it’s been a few years since Insidious: Chapter 2, where we saw the Lambert family traumatized by what lurks in “The Further.” And now, in the fourth sequel, after a few years of forgetting, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and his father, Josh (Patrick Wilson), are about to get a reminder of what hides in their memory. As a fan of the series, it’s great to see this cast return, especially since Insidious: The Red Door is the directorial debut of its star, Patrick Wilson.
Recently, we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with cast members of Insidious: The Red Door. First up, we spoke to Ty Simpkins and Sinclair Daniel.

He may be best-known as the man of our nightmares, but in addition to his iconic portrayal of sinister dreamstalker Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund has played hundreds of roles in film, television, and theater throughout his impressive career.

Too many of us in the horror world, it doesn’t get much bigger than Robert Englund. The man has haunted many of our dreams (and nightmares) and is an absolute legend. So you can imagine my joy when I was approach about interviewing the man, the myth and the legend. But not only that, it would be for the release of Hollywood Dreams and Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story. As a massive fan of the man (who isn’t), I found myself absolutely giddy with anticipation, as it meant I could ask him anything about his career. What followed is one of my favorite interviews, just for how present Robert is and generous with his time. We went about five minutes over and I could have talked to him significantly longer. He reveals what he considers to be his most underrated movies as well as full-on pitching a sequel...

It’s Bride vs. Groom in the action-packed Til Death Do Us Part, which hails from Timothy Woodward Jr., director of the Lin Shaye horror The Call, and Final Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick.
“Til Death Do Us Part portrays the grim reality that not every romance story ends happily ever after.
“After running away on her wedding day, a bride-to-be must fight for survival against her former fiancé and his seven deadly groomsmen.

Screaming onto screens in 2010, James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s original Insidious introduced us to Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as Josh and Renai Lambert. Haunted by bonkers demons from a dimension called The Further, the Lamberts continued into Chapter Two three years later, but Chapters Three and Four were prequels focused on the paranormal investigator Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). With Insidious: The Red Door, however, we’re back to the present. Set ten years after the second film, it sees the return of Wilson, Byrne, and Ty Simpkins as the Lamberts’ son Dalton. This time, Wilson is behind as well as in front of the camera, making his directorial debut – and as if that weren’t enough, he’s also turned Empire contributor, personally writing an exclusive piece for us about the whole Insidious experience.

Already spawning a spin-off, the next main chapter of the Insidious horror franchise is headed our way in the shape of The Red Door, which reunites us with Patrick Wilson's Josh Lambert and his family as they confront fresh terror. Check out the latest trailer…
And Wilson here also steps behind the camera for his directorial debut, working from a script by Scott Teems and a story from original Insidious writer Leigh Whannell.
Here's the basic idea: To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.
Alongside Wilson and Simpkins, the likes of Rose Byrne, Andrew Astor and fellow franchise veteran Lin Shaye all return.
Insidious: The Red Door will be in cinemas on 7 July.

Plot: Throughout his career, Englund starred in many well-known movies, but shot to super-stardom with his portrayal of supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise. This unique and intimate portrait captures the man behind the glove and features interviews with Englund and his wife Nancy, Lin Shaye, Eli Roth, Tony Todd, Heather Langenkamp and more.
Review: I remember reading Robert Englund’s Autobiography when I was in college. It was a wonderful telling of Englund’s life and career and painted the picture of a humble thespian who just wants to perform. So I perked up when hearing they were creating a full-length documentary. Especially since Englund had lived a decade of life since the book had been released. To say that Englund is a god-like figure in the horror realm would be underselling it. He’s beloved by fans everywhere in a way that few actors manage to achieve.
