It’s tough to make a TV show about a car. Oh, sure there have been some really cool cars featured in TV shows like Batman (the Batmobile), Green Hornet (the Black Beauty), Starsky & Hutch (their ‘75 Ford Gran Torino), or My Mother the Car, but they were never front and center. That all changed with Knight Rider, the David Hasselhoff series that originally ran on NBC from 1982-1986. In the show, undercover Lapd officer Michael Arthur Long is shot in the face during an assignment and left for dead. Instead, he’s saved by self-made billionaire Wilton Knight (Richard Basehart). Following plastic surgery, Michael is given the last name Knight and made the lead field agent in Flag (Foundation for Law and Government), a public justice organization and, armed with Kitt (Knight Industries Two Thousand), a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am equipped with artificial intelligence among other high-tech features, he fights for justice.

This is my film review and it Freaks Me Out! Girlie-art legend Russ Meyer and then- tyro critic Roger Ebert fashion the most garish, vulgar and absurd satire of wild Hollywood that they can think of, a camp vision of joy straight from the dizzy imagination of a breast-obsessed glamour photographer. Mark Robson’s Valley of the Dolls (1967) became something of commercial success, despite being generally panned by the critics. Following the murder of Sharon Tate, the film was re-released in 1969 and once again proved to be a success with audiences. In December 1969, filming began on Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), a film that was intended as a direct sequel to Robson’s movie. Jacqueline Susann, the original author of Valley of the Dolls had been approached to write a screenplay, but declined the offer. Instead, director Russ Meyer and film critic Roger Ebert, took on and completed the task in just six weeks. Ebert described it as ‘a satire of Hollywood conventions’ while Meyer leant more towards ‘a serious melodrama, a rock musical […]and a moralistic expose of the nightmarish world of Show Business’.

Sandwiched between Star Wars and Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the heyday of late 1970’s sci-fi entertainment was Battlestar Galactica. The show pitted Cylons against the crew of the Galactica for 24 episodes before being followed by Galactica 1980, and fans of the franchise should be pleased to hear that Universal is releasing both series on two separate Blu-ray releases—each with a bunch of bonus features:
(Press release via TVShowsOnDVD.com.) “Universal City, Calif., Nov. 24, 2014 – From renowned writer/producer Glen A. Larson, the creative force behind Knight Rider, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, comes the groundbreaking TV series that launched one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises in history, now available in widescreen and high definition as both Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection and Battlestar Galactica: The Remastered Collection come to Blu-ray on May 12, 2015 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

If you thought last weekend's double dose of '80s movies "Rock Of Ages" and "That's My Boy" were going to be the last gasps of the decade this summer at the multiplex, guess again. Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" is around the corner, and believe it or not, it's bringing a healthy does of the '80s -- along with a bit of '70s and '90s -- along for the ride.
While the official soundtrack (via Film Music Reporter) leans heavily towards the score by Walter Murphy, we've gotten our hands on the full list of songs in the film and the biggest standout is how many classic cuts from seminal scores are featured. This thing must've cost a pretty penny. Tracks from "Star Wars," "Raiders Of The Lost Ark," "Octopussy," and even "How To Steal A Million" are all featured along with a handful of songs from Queen's score to "Flash Gordon.

The right music can make all the difference in a TV show. It can elevate a scene, imbue it with nuance and meaning, or destroy it, either under- or over-playing the emotion and rendering it lifeless or trite. Many have opinions on the best or most memorable TV theme songs, but far fewer have anything to say about original scores. This is a somewhat skewed list, with recent series far better represented than classics, but the shows discussed below are all very strongly tied to their scores. They function as characters in the stories, bringing the audience to a particular time or place and immersing them in that world. See how many of the series you can identify by sound alone, then scroll down, where each selection is explained and accompanied with a video clip.
Honorable Mentions: Animaniacs, Batman: the Animated Series, Scrubs, Victory at Sea

Today's round of updates will be in three parts, mostly because I've been unable to post for about a week and tons of stuff happened since the last update.
Let's start with Caprica.
Season 1.5 was released on DVD in the UK this week. You can get it on Amazon.co.uk.
If you're in the UK, you should also check out PlaybackTV on Facebook. They are giving away prizes (Vol. 2 DVD, script signed by the cast, a mug used on the show and a BSG signed poster) and posting exclusive clips from the DVD on their wall.
The complete season one will be released on DVD and on Blu-ray in France on October 25.
No word yet if it will be a region-free release, but someone at Spoiler TV points out that all seasons of Battlestar have been released on region-free discs in France, so it's a possibility. (Granted, BSG did...

Socialite Ivana Trump is using her appearance on a top U.K. reality show to help launch a pop career.
Donald Trump's ex-wife proved a hit with viewers of Britain's Celebrity Big Brother last month, and the 60 year old is keen to use her newfound popularity in England to conquer the charts.
Celebrity stylist Stuart Phillips says, “Ivana is truly a surprising lady. She’s hiding a stunning singing voice and now, with the publicity of Big Brother, she would love to launch a pop career.
"She might seem aloof but she is incredibly talented and creative. I arrived at her home and was greeted by her 10 staff. Then suddenly, halfway through the styling, Ivana asked all of her staff, myself and my make-up artist, to stop working and dance to her new record.
“I was amazed to hear it was Ivana singing. Her music is fun and positive. When people hear her songs they will be surprised.”...
