It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. The BAFTA has revealed nominations for its Children and Young People Awards, which are returning for the first time in three years.
The BBC’s “Dodger” and “The Snail and the Whale” lead with three nominations each, followed by two nominations for “The Amazing World of Gumball,” “Jamie Johnson,” “JoJo & Gran Gran” and “Silverpoint.”

Netflix owned the Annie Awards on Saturday, picking up 20 of the night’s 31 competitive trophies during the virtual show. The streamer’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was named best animated feature, topping the film categories with eight wins while “Arcane” ruled the TV side with nine, including best TV/media – general audience.
Neon’s animated documentary “Flee,” by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, was named best indie feature.
In addition to the top film award, “Mitchells,” from Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, won awards for writing, FX, character design, production design, voice acting and editorial. The victory could give it an edge at the Academy Awards, with final Oscar voting set to start Thursday.

Many worthy films for all audiences flew under the pop culture radar in 2021, released with some fanfare but overshadowed by current events. Take the animated Connected, for example. Announced by Sony for 2020, it briefly arrived in theaters in April before hitting Netflix under the name The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
Now available in a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack, the film is well worth your time and attention. First of all, it’s funny and good for the entire family to enjoy together. Second, it has some fine messages underneath the frenetic pace and stuffed visuals.
Rick (Danny McBride) loves nature and is a bit of a technophobe, setting up a conflict with his daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson), who is about to attend film school. When their visions clash one more time, he cancels her flight and decides to pack the family into their old station wagon and drive across the country.

Four of the top animated films of the year sought to take us to very different worlds. One showed an astronaut trying to survive after his spaceship crash lands on a strange small planet while another shows a robot uprising on Earth instigated by a vengeful AI system. Another shows us a school that looks to make parents obsolete and the other displays a world of singing animals trying to make it in show business. One of the main things that attracted Kurt Albrecht to be a producer on “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” when Mike Rianda brought it to Sony in 2015 was the fact that it was so filmmaker driven. “We were coming up with ideas and he was on a road trip and he came up with, ‘One of the things I love is my crazy family and I love killer robots,’” Albrecht tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). On Tuesday, Netflix took to Twitter to announce an April 30 release date for its animated comedy, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, also unveiling additions to its voice cast.

Netflix has picked up from Sony Pictures Animation the worldwide rights (excluding China) to “The Mitchells Vs. The Machines,” an animated film that’s produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were behind the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
The film at one point had its title changed to “Connected” by the studio, but it has since gone back to its original title. The animated film was supposed to come out theatrically on October 23, 2020 and was then unset.

Sony has sold worldwide rights to the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller animated feature The Mitchells vs. the Machines to Netflix. The pic was previously known as Connected.
The pic jumped around the release calendar during the pandemic, with an opening date of late September, then ultimately March 12 before Netflix acquired.
The movie is directed by Mike Rianda and co-directed by Jeff Rowe with screenplay by Rianda and Rowe. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Kurt Albrecht produced the film and Will Allegra, Louis Koo Tin Lok executive produced.

Breaking: Don’t count on Sony Animation’s Lord & Miller movie Connected for this fall. The feature joins a number of other features fleeing the immediate fall calendar or delaying until later in the year, or even in 2021. Connected, last scheduled for Oct. 23, is now being moved by the studio to an unset future date this year.
Studios saw what Tenet‘s (and other films’) grosses were like without New York and Los Angeles, and both cities are required to be part of a tentpole’s marketing blitz; hence the meltdown of the immediate theatrical fall schedule. In the first trailer for Sony Pictures Animation’s “Connected,” Danny McBride plays a dopey, suburban dad who feels he’s drifting away from his family because of how much time they spend on their cellphones and devices. But that’s before an army of robots accidentally turn evil and threaten the planet.
“Connected” is produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller alongside Kurt Albrecht, the team behind Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” But this is a different kind of superhero story, as they at one point have to perform the herculean task of actually putting down their phones and making eye contact.
“You know, this is our last night together. How about we make 10 seconds of family eye contact? Starting — put your phone down — now,” McBride’s character says as his family strains bug eyes at him. “No, you’re allowed to blink, it’s just eye contact.

Joy Bryant, Gina Gershon, Desmond Harrington, Ali Larter and Dominic Purcell will star in Hyperion Pictures' Three Way Split for director Scott Ziehl. The suspense drama will begin shooting June 8 in Los Angeles. The project is based on Gil Brewer's 1963 pulp novel Wild to Possess, described as a darkly comic story of murder, kidnapping, blackmail and sexual deception. Russell Marleau adapted the script, which he will also produce with Christian Mills. This is the first production greenlighted under the first-look producing deal Marleau and Mills signed with Hyperion last year. Hyperion principals Kurt Albrecht, Tom Wilhite and Willard Carroll will executive produce with Brainstorm Media's Meyer Shwarzstein. Richard Middleton is the co-producer.
