Showing at this year’s Frightfest and being picked up by the Frightfest Presents label, The Wind has been well received at festivals across the globe. The last film I remember being based around the wind was The Happening, so The Wind doesn’t have much competition in those stakes.
The immediate impact The Wind had on me was that incredible score. It lead to this brief exchange with my partner after the first ten minutes or so of the movie:
My partner: “It’s a bit loud. I’ve got my headphones on and I can still hear it.”
Me: “But can you hear that score? I love it already. It’s amazing!”
My partner: “Just turn it down.”

A suicide. A stillborn baby. A woman holding the latter as she leaves the former to show her husband and the now widower father the results of the harrowing night thus far kept off-screen. We hear the wind blowing as the camera pushes in towards Lizzy Macklin’s (Caitlin Gerard) haunted face in silent shock. Only after she washes the blood from her body and sees Isaac (Ashley Zukerman) place her rifle against the table does she speak and only after mother and child are buried do we finally start to receive some answers. Isaac is taking Gideon (Dylan McTee) back to the city so he can settle his affairs and let his wife Emma’s (Julia Goldani Telles) family know what occurred. This leaves Lizzy alone to remember everything.

The gloomy isolation of homemaking females has long been a significant topic across various genres in cinema, depicted in domestic dramas like Chantal Akerman’s “Jeanne Dielman” and in psychodramas like Todd Haynes’ “Safe.” With her debut feature “The Wind,” a psychedelic yet baggy period-horror film, director Emma Tammi assertively carries this female-focused subject matter over to one of the most masculine of genres, the Western, with technical panache yet mixed dramatic results.
A respectable addition to the growing group of female-led Westerns of recent vintage — including “Meek’s Cutoff,” “The Homesman” and “Jane Got a Gun” — Tammi’s supernatural thriller unearths claustrophobic fears amid vast, deserted landscapes and attempts to portray symbolically the multitude of forces, otherworldly and otherwise, that aim to paralyze abandoned women. It’s a compelling package substantiated by dedicated performances and top-notch below-the-line craftwork, yet sadly bogged down by a disorderly narrative structure that works...

Premiering in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival before stopping by Fantastic Fest, Emma Tammi’s directorial debut The Wind will arrive next month. The supernatural horror western, which flips the tables when it comes to the usually male-dominated genre, follows a frontierswoman facing a strange presence. Ahead of the April release, IFC Midnight has now released the first trailer.
THR said in their review, “Loaded with atmosphere, this fragmented chiller is set far out on the American frontier, where a lonely wife — played by an intense Caitlin Gerard — starts seeing and hearing things that may be the work of her imagination or some sort of Insidious of the West, or both. Well-shot and edited, with a script that keeps you guessing for a certain stretch of time, The Wind doesn’t quite sustain the tension through the final reel, resorting to eye-rolling scare tactics that...

“This place is wrong.” In Emma Tammi’s directorial debut, the aptly titled “The Wind,” it’s a literal place that seems to be the root of festering madness, as a group of hardy settlers contend with a terrifying environment that may hold some real monsters. Or does it?
Per the film’s official synopsis, the feature “explores an unseen evil as it haunts the homestead in this chilling, folkloric tale of madness, paranoia, and otherworldly terror. Lizzy (Caitlin Gerard) is a tough, resourceful frontierswoman settling a remote stretch of land on the 19th-century American frontier. Isolated from civilization in a desolate wilderness where the wind never stops howling, she begins to sense a sinister presence that seems to be borne of the land itself, an overwhelming dread that her husband (Ashley Zukerman) dismisses as superstition. When a newlywed couple arrives on a nearby homestead, their presence amplifies Lizzy’s fears,...

IFC Midnight is acquiring U.S. distribution rights to Emma Tammi’s supernatural Western “The Wind,” following its world premiere at Midnight Madness at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film is produced by Soapbox Films and Divide/Conquer. Tammi directed from a script by Teresa Sutherland in an exploration of domestic solitude, conjuring an indescribable spectre that seems to emanate from the abyss of the night itself. “The Wind” stars Caitlin Gerard, Julia Goldani Telles, Ashley Zukerman, Dylan McTee, and Miles Anderson.
Jessica Kiang gave the film a positive review for Variety: “A convincingly feminist melding of western legend and cabin-in-the-woods horror, but not in the way one might initially think, ‘The Wind’ doesn’t seek to make infallible heroes of its women, but to understand and empathize with even their most unforgivable acts. And it’s a hugely promising debut in terms of Tammi’s steady, assured directorial craft.

Exclusive: First, there was Earthquake. Then there was Twister and after that was The Mist. Now there’s The Wind — but the thriller isn’t your basic weather/natural disaster pic.
Making its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section, the film is a genre mashup of a supernatural thriller and a Western. The trailer above unravels to reveal that there is something odd and spooky going on with the wind on a frontier in the late 1800s. Caitlin Gerard (Insidious: The Last Key) stars as a gun-toting plains-woman who is slowly driven mad by new neighbors, isolation, the harshness of the untamed land, and, of course, the wind, which is more than just an element of weather. It’s pretty much the boogeyman in this movie.

There are plenty of new footage in the clips, but there are also some nifty lessons about the history of the ninja. Is any of it true? Um, probably not, but not like you care. You know, it’s probably a damn shame that Scott Adkins’ “Ninja” won’t make it into theaters. It’s probably got better action choreography than 90% of the stuff Hollywood puts out there at the moment, if this kick-ass clip from Isaac Florentine’s movie is any indication. Sure, the plot isn’t going to win any awards, and I’m not gonna crow about the acting, either. But let’s face it, it’s a movie called “Ninja”. Whaddaya want, “Gone with the Wind”? It’s about the action. Ninja action, baby! Check out this subway fight clip from the movie. Second trailer for Scott Adkins’ martial arts movie “Ninja” via the boys over at Scott Adkins Fanz. It’s a lot shorter than the first trailer, but that’s probably because they dispensed with the exposition in favor of balls-to-the-wall action scenes. You may not know who Scott Adkins is, but if you saw “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” you already saw him in action — he was Weapon XI, the character that used to be Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds), who took on Wolverine at the end of the movie. Adkins is the star of Isaac Florentine’s actioner “Ninja”, which will probably not make it into theaters, but should make for one hell of a rental if you’re an action fan. A clip from the movie has surfaced online, featuring Atkins fighting a ninja on the rooftop of a building. A westerner named Casey, studying Ninjutsu in Japan, is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. Starring Scott Adkins, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mika Hijii, Todd Jensen, Togo Igawa, Garrick Hagon, and Miles Anderson.
