One of McKnight’s biological children, Niko McKnight, wrote on social media, “I’m evil. That’s wild. The guy who used to make me clean his used condoms out his bathroom at 15 before Lisa got home is calling me evil.”
Niko went on to discuss his father and siblings further. He acknowledged that he and his siblings were “bad children,” but his sisters “deserved better.”

Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

Paul Mescal is the face of the new Roman Empire.
The Oscar-nominated actor leads Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2,” the sequel to the Academy Award-winning 2000 film, alongside an impressive cast that includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen reprising her role from the original film.
The footage screened at CinemaCon on Thursday was still unfinished, but Paramount debuted five minutes from the film. In it Mescal, who plays the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from the original film, is again a slave fighting in games inside the Colosseum. Quinn is the new Caesar deciding the fate of the warriors with a turn of his thumb, Pascal is a general who is being honored with a series of games, and Washington’s character is mysterious, working from behind the scenes to control the power dynamics of ancient Rome.

Although there’s no distributor yet confirmed for Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development, nearly completed epic Megalopolis, we’re starting to get a sense of when we may see the $100 million epic. The director himself recently indicated it’ll be out in a few months, but according to a new report, a fall release is more likely.
In a round-up of Cannes possibilities, Deadline notes the movie is targeting “a big fall IMAX release,” which means a Venice or North American festival (i.e. TIFF or NYFF) could be more likely than a visit to the Croisette. The article also notes it’s unlikely that Steve McQueen’s Blitz, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, David Lowery’s Mother Mary, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be stopping by Cannes, but George Miller’s Furiosa, Audrey Diwan’s Emmanuelle, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds,...

If you could sit down with Francis Ford Coppola – one of the greatest titans and entrepreneurs in movie history – what would you ask him? His best advice for a young filmmaker? His favorite movies? Perhaps his go-to ice cream flavor? Well, the director had all that and more to share during a recent Instagram Ama session; yes, Coppola has Instagram, and yes, you can ask him anything.
First and foremost, during the Ama, Coppola was asked what his favorite movies of his daughter Sofia’s were, in which he rattled off her debut, 1999’s Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, and 2010’s Somewhere. That’s half of her filmography – Francis is such a dad! As for his own pictures, Coppola didn’t cite The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Jack but rather 1983’s Rumble Fish, his second S.E. Hinton movie after The Outsiders (also out in ‘83). As for other directors’ works,...

Francis Ford Coppola has been hard at work on Megalopolis, his sci-fi epic that has been decades in the making. The director took to Instagram to unveil the first look at Megalopolis, which shows a dingy, rain-soaked alley with a collapsed statue in the center. The image features the title “Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.”

It’s not much, but the first look at Megalopolis does potentially show that the project is on track to be released later this year. Plot details have largely been kept under wraps, but the film is said to center on an architect who seeks to rebuild New York City as a utopia after a disaster. The director did offer a few more details two years ago, but they’re fairly ambiguous.

This article contains spoilers for The Holdovers.
“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” – Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Though a dark horse in this year’s Oscar race for Best Picture, it’s no surprise that Alexander Payne’s latest dramedy, The Holdovers, is primed to clean up—or even upset—key acting and screenplay categories. Less of a candy-colored spectacle than Barbie, and certainly not as gravely bombastic as Oppenheimer, this quiet and philosophical story is all about messy, painfully ordinary mortals finding hope and redemption in everyday gestures.
Smart and well-structured as an original script, the performances of the three central figures are what really brings The Holdovers to relatable life. So much so that while the broad strokes of the movie’s ending seem unfair and cruel, viewers are still left smiling, with many calling The Holdovers a new Christmas movie staple.

It is said more than once in Frank Herbert’s Dune that fear is the mind-killer; it’s the little death that brings obliteration. This might be so, but after getting a better look at the Oscar-nominated Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, the unofficial prince of House Harkonnen, it’s worth remembering there are some things that are the killer of the whole damn body. And in the latest Dune: Part Two trailer, Feyd-Rautha appears to be a manifestation of death itself.
Shaved balder than a tech CEO and licking his knives like they were lovers, he makes a grotesque and immediate impression when new fans are warned “Feyd-Rautha… he’s psychotic.” That he is, but Feyd’s also more than just a simple assassin sent by the Padishah Emperor of the Imperium (Christopher Walken). In fact, Feyd-Rautha is a bit like Paul Arterides’ dark doppelgänger. Here is another product of...

It’s another big year for Joaquin Phoenix. After winning Best Actor in 2020 for his sick spin on a supervillain in Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” the Academy Award winner appeared as a journalist taking care of his young nephew in Mike Mills’ A24 family drama “C’mon, C’mon.” Then, Phoenix was back at the indie studio with another project: Ari Aster’s third feature, “Beau Is Afraid.” The surreal horror comedy expands on an Aster short from 2011, and stars Phoenix as Beau — “a paranoid man on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother” — alongside Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, and Parker Posey.
“Aster’s delirious third feature clarifies his artistic obsessions even as it expands them into surreal new shapes,” writes IndieWire’s David Ehrlich in his review of the film, hitting theaters April 21. “Once again, ‘Beau Is Afraid’ delivers another morbidly hilarious — and...

Sir Ridley Scott's 2000 historical epic "Gladiator" remains one of the best films the acclaimed filmmaker has ever made. The film is based very, very loosely on the real history of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus. It follows a fictional military commander with a badass name, Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), and his attempt to gain vengeance on those who wronged him and turned him into a fighter in gladiatorial arenas.
Even over 20 years later, the film remains a thrilling, epic cinematic experience, with a rousing score by Hans Zimmer, an incredible performance by Russell Crowe, and some of the most iconic and gorgeous shots ever put to screen. Key among these is the end of the film, the image of Maximus touching the field of wheat as he crosses over to the afterlife. It's become such an indelible shot, one so intrinsically connected to the legacy...

One of the most memorable things about Ridley Scott's incredible Roman epic "Gladiator" is just how insufferable Joaquin Phoenix's character Commodus can be. He serves as a foil to Russell Crowe's Maximus at every turn, behaving like a petulant child more often than not. He's cruel, spoiled, and self-centered, played by Phoenix with a kind of intensity that makes him a particularly impressive villain. The only problem is that Scott doesn't think that Commodus is the real villain at all.
The charmingly blunt Scott sat down with Deadline while promoting his latest film, "Napoleon," which stars Phoenix as the infamous Napoleon Bonaparte, and he was asked about casting Phoenix as such villainous characters. Scott was quick to correct, explaining that he didn't think Commodus was really the villain of "Gladiator," and he had some pretty compelling reasons as to why. Sir Ridley Scott, the legendary filmmaker and grumpy grandpa extraordinaire, should probably be pictured in the dictionary next to the term "straight shooter." So when you ask him why he finally decided to make a sequel to "Gladiator", he's not going to default to studio-approved talking points. Instead, he'll cut right to the chase and tell you it all came down to finding a reason to make "Gladiator 2" other than for money.
"Well, economically, it makes sense," Scott told Deadline. (See what I mean?) Like most people, Scott felt the first film was "completely satisfactory, creatively complete, so why muck with it, right?" Of course, money talks in Hollywood, so he kept having conversations about the project for the next 20 years, to the point where it "started to spell itself out as an obvious thing to do, and that's how it evolved." Notably, the sequel nearly went in a...

Exclusive: Ridley Scott unveils Napoleon today at a lavish world premiere in the 2,500-seat Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris. He is 85 but seems ageless, and Scott is already plotting to quickly resume production on Gladiator, the second installment of his film that won five Oscars including Best Picture. He’s got 90 minutes of footage, fully edited, and needs that much more. He expects to be shooting within two weeks, and he’s already got his next movie slated for around March. Though he is keeping the details to himself, he acknowledged it’s period, with a script like perfectly distilled liquor, and two stars ready to join him in what he said is a bucket list project for him.

Ridley Scott traverses genre with ease, but one he goes back to time and time again is historical epics. His Oscar-winning "Gladiator" clearly endeared Scott to swords and sandals. That film featured Joaquin Phoenix as the Commodus, the vile son of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius who murders and usurps his father.
In Scott's latest, Phoenix will play another ambitious tyrant; Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military genius who made himself his homeland's emperor and aspired to conquer all of Europe. The film, simply titled "Napoleon," has now released its second trailer. The first "Napoleon" trailer, released on July 10, 2023, offered a taste of the film's sure-to-be-epic scope. /Film's Ben Pearson also attended this year's CinemaCon and was served a taste of "Napoleon."

When Ridley Scott’s Gladiator hit the big screen in 2000, it captivated audiences worldwide with its thrilling tale of honor, vengeance, and redemption set in ancient Rome. The film’s grandeur, stunning visuals, and gripping performances made it an instant classic, so much so that nearly a quarter of a century later a sequel is finally on the way. However, what many might not know is that Gladiator drew inspiration from a real-life story, one that is equally as captivating, though with its own unique twists and turns. Sometimes reality is much stranger than fiction, so let’s find out What Really Happened To Gladiator?

Russell Crowe is ready to be entertained by “Gladiator 2” but confirmed he will not be involved in its production. Which makes sense because, of course, his character died at the end of the original film.
The Oscar winner revealed during RTÉ Radio One’s “The Ryan Tubridy Show” show that Ridley Scott and the sequel team have not “brought anything up” to Crowe “in a while.” The sequel stars Paul Mescal as an older version of Lucius, the nephew of since-deceased Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who was killed by Crowe’s Maximus. Lucius is the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and grandson of Marcus Aurelius. Denzel Washington and Barry Keoghan are also in talks to star.
The follow-up is set to take place 20 years after the original film.

It’s hard to believe we will actually see Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development passion project Megalopolis in the near future as production is nearing its end. With a cast featuring Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Db Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, James Remar, and Giancarlo Esposito, the $100 million epic is now wrapping up a Georgia shoot that was on-schedule and within budget, despite what some may say.
We can now glean a few more details on the production thanks to Adam Driver, who is doing press for his forthcoming sci-fi dinosaur thriller 65. Speaking to Paste Magazine he said he’ll be taking some time off having just finished Megalopolis, with no set plans for upcoming films. “Megalopolis is one of the most exciting things that I’ve ever been a part of,...

Paul Mescal just wants to look like a normal person, even when it comes to his body transformation to star in the highly talked-about “Gladiator” sequel.
The Oscar nominee shared he doesn’t find fitness talk “that interesting,” especially when it comes to bulking up for action-heavy period piece roles or superhero movies.
“With films like this and superhero films, there is sometimes a focus on that, which I don’t find that interesting,” Mescal told The Hollywood Reporter. “Of course, there’s a physical robustness required for the character, but past that, I’m not interested. This guy’s got to fight and got to be a beast. And whatever that looks and feels like is right for me, is what it’s going to be.”
Mescal added, “Sometimes I see films and I’m like, ‘That person doesn’t look real.'”

Paramount has just dated the Ridley Scott-directed follow-up for November 22, 2024.
Aftersun Oscar nominated Best Actor Paul Mescal is in talks to be in the film, as Deadline first told you.
Scott produces with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher off David Scarpa’s screenplay.
As Justin Kroll first reported, Mescal isn’t replacing Russell Crowe’s Maximus from the first film, who died. He’s playing Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), who now is a grown man as the story takes place years after the first film ended. Lucius also was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius, who murdered his father seized the throne. Commodus wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus — who, though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Television shows and feature films aren’t always medically accurate, although such mistakes can destroy the illusion of reality when they’re far off from the real science. Gunsmoke actor Milburn Stone was bombarded with letters from real-life doctors in response to the medical information in the show. As a result, he decided to start learning medicine in his own time to start double-checking the scripts.
‘Gunsmoke’ actor Milburn Stone chose Doc Adam’s name Milburn Stone as Doc Adams | CBS Photo Archive/Getty Images
Stone played Doc Adams on Gunsmoke, but the character didn’t always have a first name. It took 16 years for the producers to finally want to settle on a name. Stone did such a wonderful job with the character that they gave him the honor of coming up with a name for him. He ultimately decided on the name “Galen,” which came from Claudius “Galen” Galenus.

The idea of, and rough plans for, a sequel to 2000's Ridley Scott epic Gladiator have been floating around for so long that we talked to the director about it back in 2003 and more recently in 2021. With pre-production proceeding apace now that the prolific Scott has finished shooting his Napoleon film, word arrives that Normal People and Aftersun's Paul Mescal is locking down a deal to star.
Yes, as if his star wasn't rising enough, becoming the latest leading man for Ridley Scott would likely strap it to a rocket and send it soaring, and according to Deadline, Mescal impressed Scott enough that despite being one of the first actors to discuss the role with the director, he stuck in the filmmaker's mind enough that he's now the choice to star.

It’s finally happening. After developing the project for decades, Francis Ford Coppola is embarking on his epic drama Megalopolis this fall in Georgia. With a cast already including Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Shia Labeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Grace Vanderwaal, Kathryn Hunter, Aubrey Plaza, and James Remar, the last additions to the main ensemble have arrived.
Deadline reports that Dustin Hoffman, Chloe Fineman, Isabelle Kusman, D.B. Sweeney, and Bailey Ives will round out the cast. Cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. has also recently confirmed he will reteam with Coppola on the project, following Youth Without Youth, Tetro, Twixt, and the live cinema experiment Distant Vision. Along with his Coppola collaborations, he also shot The Master and The Harder They Fall.
Coppola called it “a love story,” adding, “A woman is divided between loyalties to two men. But not only two men. Each man comes with a philosophical principle.

“Napoleon” will not be premiering in 2022.
Despite a new report by The Ankler suggesting otherwise, IndieWire sources close to the Ridley Scott biopic deny that the film will be released by Apple Studios in December in order to qualify for the 2023 Oscars. A source also tells IndieWire that the movie, which began shooting in February and wrapped in Europe in May, is not finished with post-production.

Taking a break from shooting a movie in the late Sixties, Richard Harris chartered a private plane. The actor and his entourage travelled to Hamburg to visit the brothels, and then went on a day trip to Ireland, spending an afternoon at one of Harris’s favourite pubs. They weren’t sober for a moment of the jaunt, which was chronicled by a photographer sent along for the ride.
The story of their antics is told in Adrian Sibley’s new feature documentary The Ghost of Richard Harris, a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week. What is most extraordinary about this particular episode is that it was nothing out of the ordinary for the Limerick-born star. Zigzagging across Europe in search of adventure, sex and alcohol was simply what Harris – at that stage of his life, at least – did.
His various paramours could likely attest to that.

The cast of Francis Ford Coppola’s long-in-the-works sci-fi epic Megalopolis just got quite a bit more interesting. With Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne all onboard, a new addition has arrived.
Deadline reports Aubrey Plaza, coming off fine work in Emily the Criminal, has joined the epic of architecture, class struggle, and freedom conveyed on a massive metropolitan scale. You can't entirely dismiss an action movie that manages to throw lessons of stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius into the violent mix. Such is the case with Acts of Vengeance, starring Antonio Banderas, who, at age 57, seems to be angling for the same sort of middle-aged badassery that has done so much for Liam Neeson's retirement account. While his efforts here are a far cry from his many collaborations with Pedro Almodovar, Banderas proves more than capable of playing the sort of strong, silent type who resorts to vigilante justice. You can look at this film as a warm-up for...

All the Cities of the NorthSundance has the clout, Cannes the razzle-dazzle. Toronto’s epic film selection is world class. But ask any serious cinephile which of the world’s grand festival institutions deserves your undivided attention, their answer more often than not would be Locarno. Since its inception in 1946, the annual Swiss film festival is a haven for innovative new works by veteran and freshman auteurs alike. The Golden Leopard, Locarno’s equivalent of the Palme D’or, has gone to a diverse group of winners that includes both Otto Preminger’s Carmen Jones and Hong Sang-soo’s Right Now, Wrong Then. Sensing an egregious lack of this progressive programing spirit in their Southern California megalopolis, film critics Jordan Cronk and Robert Koehler have masterminded a curatorial anecdote: Locarno in Los Angeles. Running April 21 through April 23, the event will showcase 10 features and a number of shorts that screened at...

It's a prequel that almost cannot possibly ever line up with the version of the Caped Crusader that we know from either DC Comics, from the Christopher Nolan films or the early Tim Burton films. And that's frustrating. I can't tell you that it isn't. The Penguin is rising! The Riddler is cracking! Somebody who may or may not be The Joker is becoming dangerously unhinged! Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 3 – “III.”
Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine
Directed by Neil Marshall
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
When Black Sails premiered, I welcomed its slow pace and narrative interest. Going the less obvious route, the series has – so far – avoided laying the action on too thick and, instead, has stuck close to its main characters. However, these characters have mostly been conniving and stressing out, wanting to kill certain people but being unable to for whatever reasons (like due to John’s craftiness). At some point, tensions need to be relieved, and the fact that this is a series about pirates makes that very easy to accomplish – throw a sword between two characters and let them go for it. For all its similar kind of quietness in the face of a loud premise, The Walking Dead still manages to have a zombie-based action set-piece in almost every episode.

Black Sails," Starz's sweeping series about pirates, initially captivates because it's stunning. A hotter group of aquatic baddies never roamed the blue waters of the West Indies or cavorted on the white sands of New Providence.
The series is so promising that the station renewed it even before the pilot's Jan. 25 premiere. Watching the first four episodes about tough men and the even tougher women they meet in 1715 Nassau, it becomes clear "Black Sails," blessedly, lacks pirate cliches. There's not an "arrrr" or "yo-ho-ho" to be heard.
"At the first meeting we had," co-creator and showrunner Jon Steinberg tells Zap2it, "we said, 'No patches. No peg legs. No parrots. No hooks.' We overcorrected early on, deliberately, in terms of trying to strip out anything that felt expected from the pirates movies that had come before."
This leaves the pirates feeling truer to their essences, more fully drawn than...

Even though she’s proved countless times that she doesn’t really deserve it, ‘Revenge’ fans have always held on to hope for a happy ending for Emily Thorne. Unfortunately, the Jan. 12 episode ‘Endurance’ crushed that hope to death with one of Victoria Grayson’s stilettos.
Revenge‘s third season is getting dark. Gone are the happy-ish days of yore, when Emily (Emily Van Camp) would gleefully take down a worthy opponent week after week; all while keeping her eye on the prize of a happy ending with the Graysons in jail and Emily finally free of her demons. Nowadays, she’ll be lucky if she makes it out of the Hamptons in one piece.
