Mami Select: Filmed on iPhone is an initiative undertaken by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) to make short films shot on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The five filmmakers chosen for this virtuous deed were Prateek Vats, Saurav Rai, Faraz Ali, Archana Atul Phadke, and Saumyananda Sahi. These filmmakers were mentored by veteran filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Vikramaditya Motwane and Rohan Sippy. From the confines of a garment factory to the narrow alleys of a daily market in a rural town to the snow-clad locales of Kashmir to the dunes of Rajasthan to the bustling metropolis, they present vivid characters whose individual problems are no less vital and compelling. Small errors snowball into unintended and unimaginable consequences. As a result, the principal characters...

There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who has been awarded the 58th Jnanpith Award along with Sanskrit scholar Jagatguru Rambhadracharya, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.
The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.
It was at Pwa meetings that the undiscovered poet struck up a friendship with lyricist Shailendra, who introduced him to Bimal Roy, who, in turn, told him that he was wasting his time and talent at a car workshop.

The enigmatic greys of a Kashmir winter in ‘Haider’, the many tones of black in ‘Maqbool’ with such visual poetry where each note stands out, Vishal Bhardwaj’s cinema has never shouted ‘independent’ but subtly stood out from the movies of his time.
Not hyper-realistic in its treatment, it is Bhardwaj’s visual poetry that makes the thematic essence pull in reality at its most profound.
“What you call visual poetry in my films emerges from the deep-rooted love for poetry that never leaves me,” Bhardwaj told Ians. “Therefore, there is always an effort to lend a certain rhythm and deeper meaning to everything that happens in front of the camera.”
Together with Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Tigmanshu Dhulia, Bhardwaj has been instrumental in ushering in a new era in Indian cinema after the almost traumatic 80s when Hindi cinema hit its lowest. He believes, though, that the independent...

Not many know before Abhishek Verman got Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor together for 2 States, the Omkara director had planned the same with Srk. Yes, you heard that right!
The filmmaker was planning to adapt Chetan Bhagat’s book of the same name into a film featuring Jawan actor in the lead role. However, it didn’t see the light of the day as Srk looked at it differently. Bhardwaj also opened up about when he...

Femme fatales are usually supporting characters in any crime or espionage thriller. The last femme fatale who created a lot of noise for her suave action skills and sheer beauty in a film was Ana de Armas in No Time to Die. Ever since, there have been only a handful of films and television shows that have explored this archetype. Even in the Hindi cinema space, the last interesting film that deeply explored the femme fatale was Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf. Wingwomen, whose French title is Voleuses, loosely translated to thieves, is the story of two friends who are on the verge of leaving the life of crime. This French Netflix original film, released on November 2, 2023, is based on the comic book of the same name by Florent Ruppert, Jérôme Mulot, and Christophe Deslandes and is directed by Mélanie Laurent.

The amazing actress Tabu, just like in any of her other films, has nailed the character of Krishna Mehra (Km) in Khufiya. We have seen her flourish in other strong roles in films such as Drishyam, Andhadhun, and Haider, among others. Vishal Bhardwaj has been successful in being able to depict the character of Km in the film Khufiya, which is an adaptation of real-life incidents from the book ‘Escape to Nowhere’ by Amar Bhushan. Some sources suggest that the character of Tabu in Khufiya is even inspired by the real-life person, Amar Bhushan. In the book, there was only one character, Jeevan, who conducted a thorough investigation for the search for the mole, but the film has split the character into two parts for dramatic purposes. Being a part of the Indian R&aw, Km has been depicted as extremely patriotic, seeking to find out the mole in their...

Khufiya (Netflix)
Starring Tabu, Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi, Atul Kulkarni , Azmeri Haque Badhon

Cutting through the acres of ambiguity and symbolisms that run through his work, Vishal Bhardwaj delivers his most coherent cogent and compelling film in years.
Khufiya is many things at the same time. It is on the topmost layer an espionage thriller about a spy at Raw selling confidential information to the neighbouring country. Ali Fazal plays this character with such straggling imprecision that I thought we would lose focus on the spy’s brazen antics (how did he get away with it for so long?!).
But no. Bhardwaj, fully in charge for once wastes no time in exploring hazy characters played by lazy actors. His focus is the ever-resplendent Tabu who has earlier created enduring magic for Vishal in Maqbool and Haider. In Khufiya, Tabu plays a number of roles, and I...

Hindi cinema has treated spy thrillers and espionage thrillers in a cliched manner. There are a handful of films in this genre that do a good job of presenting their story realistically. Raazi and Madras Café are prime examples of good storytelling with solid performances, but there are countless films that do not bother to remain grounded. They are given exaggerated treatment at the screenplay level. There tends to be more emphasis on action set pieces than actual storytelling. Khufiya comes somewhere in between the two kinds mentioned above. This Vishal Bhardwaj film is a Netflix India original that was released on October 5, 2023. Khufiya is based on the book “Escape to Nowhere” by Amar Bhushan, which is about a high-ranking Indian intelligence official who is caught spying for an enemy country.

Khufiya turned out to be a complicated spy thriller. Vishal Bhardwaj was bang on the money with the humor and the satirical parts of the movie, but the rest of the film had scope for improvement. Despite its issues, Khufiya presented some interesting characters that got embroiled in espionage of a larger magnitude. This movie was about a senior intelligence officer betraying his agency and country and fleeing to America. Several characters in the film are now at it to locate this man and bring him back to make him face the Indian judicial system.

Tumse Na Ho Pyega (streaming on Disney+Hotstar)
Starring Ishwak Singh, Mahima Makwana, Gaurav Pandey, Gurpreet Saini , Karan Jotwani
Directed by Abhishek Sinha
It is sad and annoying to see so many talented people coming up with a film so dull and unfunny it gives a bad reputation to past bromances like Dil Chahta Hai and Sholay.
Forget Jai and Veeru, the three friends in Tumse Na Ho Payega (a suitable title indeed) don’t even look like long-standing friends. They seem more three unlikely people thrown together on the same table at a boring party by fluke. They are played by actors who want us to know that they know how to act. Every word they utter is punctuated and eye-rolling.
The main protagonist Gaurav (Ishwak Singh) speaks directly to us the audience, like Wamiqa Gabbi in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Charlie Chopra who keeps looking into the camera and talking,...
