John Badham's 1986 comedy "Short Circuit" was a masterwork on cinematic animatronics. The film's main character was a robot, called only Number Five (voiced by Tim Blaney), who was struck by lightning and lost its memory, but somehow gained sentience. Number Five, originally built to be a laser-wielding soldier, idly rolled out of the robotics lab where it was built and into the home of the put-upon suburbanite Stephanie (Ally Sheedy). Stephanie spends the bulk of the film trying to teach Number Five about the fineries of human interaction while providing it with all the raw data she can provide; Number Five can read books in a matter of seconds.
Searching for Number Five is a military jarhead named Capt. Skroeder (G.W. Bailey), and a pair of funny robotics geniuses named Newton and Ben (Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens). Antics ensue on all sides while Number Five itself slowly comes...

This weekend’s box office is expected to be a quiet one with “Toy Story 4” still a week away, but Sony will still have a blockbuster on the slate with “Men In Black: International,” the fourth installment in the 90s alien action-comedy series and the first without stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
In their place are “Thor: Ragnarok” duo Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, respectively playing the top agent and newest rookie in Mib’s London branch. Though the pair have become recognizable names thanks to their work in Marvel and elsewhere, “Mib: International” is still looking like one of the biggest risks of the summer slate.

What was allowed in 1986 is cringeworthy today
Two movies I loved as a child celebrated their 30th anniversaries recently, and when I looked back upon them nostalgically, as one does, I saw products of their time that mostly hold up — save for one horribly dated, unforgivable element each. The kind of offense that makes it hard to still appreciate the movie when that one inexcusable part dominates your mind.
Both “Crocodile” Dundee and Short Circuit have decent scripts. The former was even nominated for an Oscar. The latter remains quotable. Their main characters are major figures of 1980s pop culture. Not on the level of Arnold Schwarzenegger and E.T., but higher up than Yakov Smirnoff and The Noid. But I can no longer enjoy these movies. Not as they are, anyway.
Their respective crimes are things that shouldn’t have even been tolerated at the time. In Dundee it’s a scene where Paul Hogan’s titular...

Director Niell Blomkamp’s new sci-fi epic Chappie opened this weekend. The film tells the story of a robot who is given artificial intelligence by his inventor, but he must learn the ways of the world just like a child. However, his innocent mind is being molded by gangsters and violent criminals.
Photos: 'Pacific Rim' and 7 Giant Robot/Monster Mashes
It’s still to be seen if Chappie will go down as a classic in the robot sci-fi genre, but if it whetted your appetite for artificial intelligence movies and android action scenes, here are nine of the best robotic heroes and nine of the craziest robotic villains in cinematic history.

Robots have been a part of cinema since its creation and still make for intriguing on-screen presences. With RoboCop set for a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook, DVD and Blu-ray release on 9th June 2014 from Studiocanal, we count down the most memorable movie cyborgs to have graced our screens.
Evil Maria – Metropolis (1927)
Fritz Lang’s classic sees an inventor, who has created a robot to resurrect his deceased wife, apply the likeness of a popular female worked named Maria (played by Brigitte Helm) in an attempt to ruin her reputation amongst her peers. Once completed, the robot is an evil incarnation of Maria and wreaks havoc in the dystopian future depicted by Lang.
R2-D2/C-3Po – the Star Wars series (1977-2005)
Not only are these two of the most beloved robots in cinematic history, but one of the most revered fictional filmic double acts to adorn the screen. R2-D2 (played by...

★★☆☆☆ Short Circuit (1986) is a film which anyone old enough to remember first time round, will look back on with nostalgia as a defining sci-fi movie of the 1980s. However viewed now, the family comedy starring Ally Sheedy, Police Academy's Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens, is likely to leave you distinctly underwhelmed. Struck by lightning during a freak storm, experimental military robot Number 5 (voiced by Tim Blaney), is given a new lease of life. Escaping from the high security military compound where he was created, Number 5 is befriended and given a home by the eccentric Stephanie Speck (Sheedy) who believes him to be an alien.

They can be clanking or lithe, as big as a planet or as small as a puppy. Here’s our list of cinema's 50 finest robots and AI computers…
Who doesn’t love robots? Our metal friends have long been a source of inspiration, wonder and fear for filmmakers and audiences. A way to examine our own humanity, and view emotions – or lack of them – from a new perspective, artificial intelligence has been in films for almost as long as we’ve been making them. We seem drawn to them, more often that not casting them as our creations gone rogue and seeking to rise up against us, but sometimes as tragic figures wanting to be more like us. Either way, they’re fascinating, and pretty damn cool.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
African Cats – Samuel L. Jackson (Narration)
Deep Gold – Bebe Pham, Jaymee Ong, Michael Gleissner
Madea’s Big Happy Family – Tyler Perry, Loretta Devine, Bow Wow
Water for Elephants – Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
Movie of the Week
Water for Elephants
The Stars: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
The Plot: A veterinary student (Pattinson) abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
The Buzz: This period piece looks to be a well put together romantic drama. I enjoyed Pattinson’s general vibe in the trailer; thankfully a far cry from his brooding ham-bake of the Twilight films. Witherspoon is winsome, I typically love her in her more dramatic pieces — aside from the laborious Vanity Fair. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of on-screen magic this pair can conjure up. Happy to see Christolph Waltz again,...

Johnny Five is still alive. And unfortunately, he's in the hands of a Mall Cop director. Dimension Films has signed Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) to direct Short Circuit, the remake of the 1986 sci-fi film starring Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg. This abomination, er, remake will be penned by Robot Chicken scribe Dan Milano, and will bring Johnny 5 (originally voiced by Tim Blaney) into the 21st century. This time around, Number 5 will be a highly sophisticated military weapon who develops a conscience and personality after being struck by lightning. But instead of making friends with a babe on par with Ms. Sheedy, Johnny 5 will this time be connecting with a lonely boy and his fractured family. In a syllable, ugh. As a major fan of the original movie, I reserve comment out of sheer unadulterated anger. Please join me in protest below.

A writer has been hired by Dimension Films to develop their remake project, "Short Circuit". Variety claimed that the studio are appointing screenwriter Dan Milano to pen the movie's new script.
Milano is known for his writing and voice acting work for stop motion animated series "Robot Chicken". He also co-created and played the title character in Fox sitcom, "Greg the Bunny". On his involvement with the "Short Circuit" project, producer David Foster said that Milano watched the original movie while he was in high school, and is interested in updating the concept.
As for the movie itself, Foster said, "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals." On the robot's design which is similar to Wall-e, he gushed, "We think of 'Wall-e' as an extended trailer for our film,...

We love movies...a lot. In fact, I would bet that if you gave the writers of Film School Rejects a choice between taking a leisurely cruise on a boat filled with women in bikinis and/or men flaunting banana hammocks or spending a day locked in a theater with some of the best movies of all-time, nine out of ten times we would choose the theater, with number ten being someone who simply just got lost on the way to the theater and wandered onto the boat by accident. So it really comes as no surprise that we really need a column around here that expresses our deep, primal, almost creepy passion for movies. And by creepy I mean making out with DVD cases. Yes, I know that if you open and turn them horizontal they kind of look like a giant mouth, but that's no excuse. You know who you are. I'm...
