Understanding and appreciation of Claire Denis has long faced the vacancy of No Fear, No Die, her 1992 feature pitting Alex Descas and Isaach de Bankolé in the world of cockfighting. Whether you’ve watched the fuzzy DVD rip that’s satiated fans or have awaited better opportunities, a 4K restoration from The Film Desk and Pathé arrives as manna from heaven––watching it recently was like having a new Denis film altogether. With No Fear, No Die now playing at Bam, the Siskel Film Center, and Austin Film Society, there’s a fresh, Abdullah Ibrahim-scored trailer that we’re pleased to debut.
Here’s the synopsis: “Isaach de Bankolé and Alex Descas star in the under-seen second feature by celebrated director Claire Denis, an unflinching portrait of two Black immigrant men from Benin and French Antilles, scraping out a living through illegal cockfights in a restaurant basement on the outskirts of Paris.

According to the New York Times, Benjamin passed away on Tuesday, August 20, at her home in Cape Town. Her cause of death has not yet been determined.
Born in Johannesburg, the South African vocalist recorded alongside the likes of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, before she reportedly went on to become an ambassador for her homeland and a beacon of principled objection to apartheid.
After relocating to New York City with her husband and acclaimed pianist, Abdullah Ibrahim, the internationally renowned jazz singer gave birth to her son, Tsakwe, and daughter, Tsidi (who is also known today as rapper Jean Grae).
During an interview with Revolt TV, Tsidi reflected on her parent’s decision to enrich their lives with a wealth of African culture. “I think they were so ahead of their time in thinking in terms of being individuals and saying,...

The feisty township singer Miriam Makeba was already a star in her native South Africa when she played a brief cameo in a controversial Us anti-apartheid film called Come Back, Africa. The docudrama was covertly filmed by the American director Lionel Rogosin under the noses of hostile authorities before being smuggled abroad, where it served as an early document of the iniquities of apartheid.
Makeba was both victim and beneficiary of this clandestine film. Furious South African authorities revoked her passport, forcing her to seek asylum in the Us, where Makeba quickly became a huge celebrity. She appeared on the Steve Allen show in November 1959, performed for the likes of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis at the Village Vanguard, hobnobbed with Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte and Sammy Davis Jr and was even...

He recently appeared in the BBC drama The Crimson Petal And The White. Forthcoming films include Horrid Henry: The Movie, and The Iron Lady, in which he plays Michael Heseltine. Grant is married to the voice coach Joan Washington and has a daughter and a stepson.
When were you happiest?
When I cracked how to do the Eiffel Tower with my yo-yo in 1968.
Which living person do you most admire, and why?
Joan Washington.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Doubt.
