“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”
In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Writer, director and actor Bradley Cooper began working on “Maestro” years before the film went into pre-production. One person he turned to early on in that process was his collaborator on his directorial debut (“A Star is Born”), cinematographer Matthew Libatique.
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Libatique discusses his process for shooting one of the most emotional scenes in the film – the Thanksgiving scene where Felicia (Carey Mulligan) finally confronts her husband, Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) over his late nights away from home.
Listen below.
In prepping for “Maestro,” the Oscar-nominated Libatique tells Variety: “What Bradley wanted to do was crack the code on the makeup and how he was going to physically transform into Lenny and working with Kazu.”
The result was a 40-minute proof of concept where they shot actual scenes. It was through that process that Libatique learned about what lenses they liked and what format worked.

Since January 2, the four motion picture guilds comprising makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, art directors, and sound mixers have announced their nominations for the year’s best work in their respective fields. While there has been plenty of variation in their choices, all four organizations have shown solidarity in recognizing three films: “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer”. All of these rank among our top 10 Best Picture candidates, with “Oppenheimer” in first place, “Barbie” in third, and “Maestro” in sixth.
Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

Three of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2024 Oscars reaped bids on January 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things”contend here in the period picture category against “Maestro,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer.”
The Oscar frontrunner, “Barbie” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.”
‘The contemporary costume contenders are “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn.”
Our two other predicted Oscar nominees — “The Color Purple” and “Wonka” — can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored...

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

Director Bradley Cooper describes “Maestro” as a series of movements through the life of the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre. Precisely because the film seeks to chase a more emotional throughline, every aspect of the filmmaking has to evolve, too. The “Maestro” production team didn’t just need to capture a succession of time periods — although they did need to nail those time periods — they needed to visually dramatize the ever-changing dynamic between Lenny (Bradley Cooper) and Felicia (Carey Mulligan). If you’ll forgive the obvious metaphor, every department head had to move in concert with each other and with Cooper’s vision.
When thinking about how to intuitively make the audience feel the shift into the ’70s, for example, cinematographer Matthew Libatique wanted to create a sense of nostalgia for the era, both because it’s far enough away from our own...

“If you’re going to do a Chanel suit, you have to have respect for it,” costume designer Mark Bridges says. So when Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” script called for one, he went directly to the Parisian fashion house for assistance.
Spanning four decades, “Maestro” follows Leonard Bernstein’s (Cooper) journey to becoming the legendary composer and conductor. However, the story steps away from being a traditional biopic, instead focusing on the love story between Leonard and Felicia Montealegre played by Carey Mulligan.
In one scene, towards the end of the film, Felicia visits the doctor’s office and is diagnosed with cancer. Bridges notes that the detail of her character wearing Chanel’s iconic tweed jacket was in the script. “I loved that. I think it’s interesting when things contradict the surroundings. It speaks to me as clothes as armor and protection if she was going to get bad news,...

Well-versed in the modern period drama with a twist, director Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Favourite) had a simple edict for the costume design of Poor Things. As British costume designer Holly Waddington notes, “He didn’t want it to be like a period drama, he didn’t want it to be like a sci-fi film, and he didn’t want it to be too ‘fashiony.’ ” The result is Age of Innocence meets surrealism meets couture.
Adapted from Alasdair Gray’s novel, Searchlight’s Poor Things is a fantastical feminist fairy tale on steroids, where the character Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is brought back to life with the brain of an inquisitive, no-holds-barred toddler by the Frankensteinish Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Set against a backdrop of London, Lisbon, Paris and Alexandria, the costumes support the narrative of a young woman’s social and sexual awakening.

Bradley Cooper wore 137 individual prosthetics in 'Maestro'.The 48-year-old actor portrays late legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein in the movie and he worked closely with make-up effects expert Kazu Hiro - who won an Oscar for his work with Gary Oldman in 'Darkest Hour' - for his dramatic transformation, spending five hours in the make-up chair to alter his appearance each day.Kazu devised four full sets of prosthetics and two bodysuits to document the New York Philharmonic music director - who died in 1990 aged 72 -over the passing over time from the early days of his career in 1943 up until the last years of his life.He told People magazine: "All in all, I crafted 137 individual pieces, ranging from small to large."And it wasn't just Bernstein's physical appearance Bradley was trying to transform, as the effects expert constructed a special nose plug for the actor which, as well...

Fresh from a victory tour of the fall festivals, four of the key creatives behind Netflix awards favorite Maestro stopped by Contenders London to reveal some of the secrets behind the scenes. Speaking to Baz Bamigboye, producer Kristie Macosko Krieger, makeup designer Kazu Hiro, costume designer Mark Bridges and production designer Kevin Thompson shared their thoughts and experiences on Bradley Cooper’s poignant biographical portrait of world-famous New York conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, who died in 1990 aged 72.
Praising the performance by Cooper’s co-star Carey Mulligan, Kreiger noted that Bernstein’s passionate but tortured love for his wife Felicia formed the backbone of the film. “It’s a movie about a really complicated love story and a movie about art,” she said. “In order to make the music he made, Leonard needed that complexity in his life. Felicia was the scaffolding — she really was his rock, and she was there for him.

“This whole project began a good 15 years ago,” explained Jamie Bernstein, daughter of famed composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, at the New York Film Festival’s Spotlight Gala Premiere of “Maestro” at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. “The evolution of this film has been so intricate and profound, and so many things happened along the way, and so many new people arrived along the way — most significantly Bradley Cooper, who came into the picture about five or six years ago and changed everything.”

Leonard Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander and Nina were in complete awe the first time they saw Bradley Cooper as the renowned conductor and composer.
“It took our breath away, it made us gasp,” Jamie Bernstein told Variety at the North American premiere of “Maestro” at the New York Film Festival. “In some pictures, we could tell a little bit that it was Bradley, but there were certain photographs where we would go, ‘Oh my God!’ It was so amazingly perfect.”
“I had a FaceTime call come in, and I didn’t recognize the number. But I chanced it, and it was my father as an old man!” added Nina Maria Felicia Bernstein. “Obviously, that was not my father as an old man, it was Bradley. I could not stop laughing. He had the cigarette and the glasses, it was so spot on.”

“Maestro” director and star Bradley Cooper made an inconspicuous appearance at the New York Film Festival premiere, skipping press in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA.
Fitting for a film that focuses on legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein, the starry premiere marked a homecoming given its location: David Geffen Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic. On Sept. 23, 1962, Bernstein and the Philharmonic performed the inaugural concert at the venue. Bernstein served as the orchestra’s conductor from 1958 to 1969 and laureate conductor from 1969 to 1990.
Before the lights in the auditorium dimmed, Cooper was spotted sporting a buzz cut and chatting with notable guests, including Netflix’s Scott Stuber, Laura Dern, Shawn Levy and Jeremy Strong.
Carey Mulligan, who leads the film opposite Cooper as the conductor’s wife Felicia Montealegre, did not attend.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)

If a film festival falls in the middle of a strike, will anyone come? What could have been a purely philosophical question has become a stark reality for the 80th Biennale, which, despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, is still hoping to pack its red carpet with A-list celebrities.
Several hot-ticket titles in Venice this year, including Michael Mann’s Ferrari starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz, and Luc Besson’s Dogman with Caleb Landry Jones, have secured interim agreement waivers from SAG-AFTRA to allow affiliated talent to do promotion and publicity at the festival. And the actors union last week explicitly encouraged its members to promote approved projects, as a way to support the indie industry. Films from the streamers or the studios, so-called “struck productions,” cannot get interim agreement waivers from the unions.
Waiver or not, however, it remains to be seen if the talent will actually show up.

Certainly one of the more eagerly awaited expected contenders is Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein movie, Maestro.

You’d think Steven Spielberg has done and seen it all by now. But during his Thursday night appearance – his first-ever appearance on late-night – he told Stephen Colbert about a moment making “The Fablemans” that caused him to instantly “burst into tears.”
Spielberg is in the middle of a media blitz for the semi-autobiographical film, which is sitting on seven Oscar nominations. “Fablemans” tells the story of how the legendary director became interested in filmmaking – a thing he’s been doing so well for so long, you’d think nothing would catch him off-guard.
But then Spielberg described what it was like to step on set and see, for the first time, Michelle Williams and Paul Dano as his parents.

Steven Spielberg is recalling the first time he saw Michelle Williams and Paul Dano dressed up together as his parents while on set for The Fabelmans.
During a sit-down with Colbert in a rare television interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which aired Thursday, the Oscar-winning filmmaker explained how a “routine” first day of filming his personal and now-Oscar-nominated movie turned into an emotional one.
“Mark Bridges (costume designer) came over to me and said, ‘I’ve got Paul and Michelle here in their hair and makeup and costumes,'” he recalled, adding that he had seen them in their costumes separately but not together. “I turned around and there was my father and mother, and I just burst into tears. Worry not, "Fabelmans" fans. Mark Bridges may still get an Oscar nomination.
For the past two years, all the Oscar nominees in Best Costume Design were also recognized by the Costume Designers Guild, but that's not always the case. Indeed, in 2019, they didn't nominate three of the eventual Oscar nominees, including the winner – Jacqueline Durran for Little Women. All this to say that you should take this year's nominees with a grain of salt in terms of Oscar, especially regarding two big omissions – Mark Bridges for The Fabelmans and Sandy Powell for Living. Both designers have secured Oscar nominations with no corresponding guild support in the past – he for Joker, she for Gangs of New York, Mrs. Henderson Presents, and The Irishman. In any case, their lack of recognition proves that the industry may not be as into their films as previously anticipated. We shall see.

The Wonder (Netflix)
In 1862, Crimean War nursing veteran Lib Wright (Florence Pugh) sets off from London to the foggy Irish Midlands for a mystifying endeavor. Thirteen years since the Great Famine, devout villagers are eager to believe in a miracle: Young Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy) hasn’t eaten in four months, and Lib must determine whether the 11-year-old truly is surviving on “manna from heaven.”
Lib’s vibrant blue nursing ensemble feels bold and authoritative, as she challenges the village’s — and the all-male tribunal’s — rigidity with her pragmatic, science-based knowledge. “Lib is coming as the modern, practical woman, going into a repressed, traditional society,” says costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux. “She’s trying to show there’s another world out there, really.”

“We had our first meeting over Zoom,” recalls Mark Bridges, the two-time Oscar-winning costume designer, of speaking with Steven Spielberg about his being in charge of costuming for “The Fabelmans.” “One of the most exciting/intimidating things he said to me during that conversation was that his mother had a very unique personal style. I was immediately curious as to what that personal style might be.” Bridges would find out soon enough, as he created the characters’ look for Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical Amblin Entertainment feature. It would prove to be both a professional challenge and a great creative achievement for a designer who won Academy Awards for “The Artist” in 2012 and “Phantom Thread” in 2018, and who has served as costume designer for eight movies nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
It’s Bridges’s first collaboration with Spielberg, but hardly his first time faced with costuming a period film.

Steven Spielberg wanted to tell a very personal story with “The Fabelmans,” one that was going to leave the Oscar-winning director vulnerable and raw while shooting the semi-autobiographical look at his childhood as a movie-loving kid in Arizona and Northern California. It helped, Spielberg admits, that most of the team on “The Fablemans” were the veterans of several of the filmmaker’s past productions, with some collaborators like editor Michael Kahn beginning their association as far back as 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
“It was great having so many friends, and colleagues, and people who speak with each other and certainly to me in a kind of shorthand,” Spielberg said during a panel on “The Fabelmans” for Variety’s FYC Fest. “And it made making this movie so much easier than it would’ve been. It’s much easier for me to cry in front of friends than...

While “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are expected to be Oscar craft juggernauts (“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Babylon” are still Tbd), don’t discount Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans” as a major contender as well. That’s because of its status as Best Picture frontrunner (winning the influential TIFF People’s Choice audience award) and great craftsmanship in recreating the celebrated director’s troubled coming-of-age in the ’50s and ’60s and his early brilliance as a filmmaker.
“The Fabelmans” is obviously special to its director: The tribute to his late parents — computer engineer Arnold Spielberg and concert pianist Leah Adler — is his most personal film to date. The fictionalized cinematic memoir is filtered through alter ego Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle), an aspiring director who falls very under the spell of the movies at an early age (when he’s played by Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord...

The Fabelmans had its premiere on Saturday evening at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
The film was met with a standing ovation at the Princess of Wales theater and rave reviews by critics. Read The Hollywood Reporter’s review Here. Oscar pundit and THR’s executive editor of awards Scott Feinberg writes in his wrap-up, “As for the film itself? It is, at least for now, the one to beat in the best picture race.”
Variety’s Peter Debruge says: “The master of escapist entertainment gets personal in this 150-minute self-portrait, crafting a loving homage to the complicated relationship with his parents that has informed so much of his work.”
Indiewire’s Eric Kohn states: “While Spielberg made history last year as the only director to receive Best Director nominations across six decades, he has never received a nomination for screenwriting. The movie is positioned to elbow its way into...

TCM and HBO Max’s new series “Follow the Thread” brings costume designers and fashion designers together as it examines the relationship between fashion and costume.
Inspired by the Met’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s exhibition, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the series include designers Sandy Powell, Mark Bridges, Isis Mussenden and Deborah Nadoolman Landis as the world of costume design and fashion design come together. The limited series covers a spectrum of films from 1954’s “Sabrina” to 1957’s “Funny Face” to “Annie Hall” (1977) through to “Crazy Rich Asians” showing how film influences culture and impact fashion.
Speaking with Variety, Powell, Bridges, Mussenden and Nadoolman Landis discuss what drew them to the series, the biggest misconception about costume design and share their favorite transformations.
What made you say yes to this when TCM approached you about the series?
Deborah Nadoolman Landis: I was a little ambivalent.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.
Jacqueline Durran (“Cyrano”) has also won twice for her work in “Anna Karenina” (2013) and...
