"They're in their heads, I'm in mine." Freestyle Digital Media has released an official trailer for a hometown indie dramedy film titled Out and About, from filmmaker Peter Callahan. This premiered at a few regional festivals last year, including the Albuquerque, Fort Lauderdale, and Ojai Films Festivals, with a VOD release set for May this summer. The film takes us right inside the mind of a middle-aged man as he tries to come to terms with his life over the course of an afternoon walk through his old hometown. The film's director Peter Callahan also stars as Jeff in this contemplative film about a search for meaning, following as he wrestles with aging, success and failure in America, and his ultimate place in the world. The cast includes Maggie Lacey, Tom Nelis, Bridget White, Matthew Boston, and Daniel Stewart Sherman. At first glance it reminds me of My Dinner with Andrew,...

It's a bookworm baby shower! That was the theme for mama-to-be Jenna Bush Hager's big celebration which took place at the Peter Callahan Catering studio in New York. The Today show contributor and former teacher, who is expecting her first child with hubby Henry Hager, was presented with a variety of kiddie reads, each inscribed with parenting advice from her morning show colleagues. "My husband Henry came and surprised me. Everyone gave me books, which was really sweet because I'm a teacher and my mom was a librarian so I grew up with a mother that read to us all the time," President George W. Bush's daughter explained. But not every book was appropriate for bedtime...

★☆☆☆☆ In Peter Callahan's 2009 film Against the Current, Joseph Fiennes plays Paul Thompson, a depressed New Yorker with a tragedy in his recent past, who decides to swim down the Hudson from upstate to the sea. He enlists two friends Liz (Elizabeth Reaser) and Jeff (Justin Kirk), to accompany and support him on his Quixotic endeavour. Paul is not an athlete or a champion swimmer; he isn't doing it for charity or to raise awareness for some noble cause. In fact, as the film goes on, it becomes evident that his motivation is linked to the darkness from his past.

Compared with last year, Fortissmo Films come packing with only a single title, but that doesn't mean their sales agent won't be spending pretty much the entire festival from their rented office balcony. They signed a fairly ambitious deal with Fox - first time I've heard of a major studio outputting their titles to a films sales company of this nature and they've got one receiving a world preem at the festival in Sergei Loznitsa's My Joy. - Compared with last year, Fortissmo Films come packing with only a single title, but that doesn't mean their sales agent won't be spending pretty much the entire festival from their rented office balcony. Among the hot titles on the sales side of things is Anh Hung Tran's Norwegian Wood – a pic that I was sure was going to land a spot in Cannes this year, but appears to still be in post prod.

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

The win came over a crowed field of competitors from all over the world, many of them with much larger budgets. The other big winner at the Pump Room of the Ambassador East awards ceremony Saturday evening was by veteran master Marco Bellocchio of Italy, who won the Silver Hugo as best director for "Vincere," the story of Mussolini's younger brother. Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Filippo Timi won Silver Hugos as best actress and actor,...

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's exploration of 'his' river, and Peter Callahan's film Against the Current certainly functions as a stirring tribute to the stunning radiance and history of the river and the Hudson Valley. In what is essentially a three-hander starring Joseph Fiennes (currently in ABC's FlashForward), Elizabeth Reaser (a great actress when she's not playing Robert Pattinson's vampire Mom, Esme, in Twilight and New Moon), and Justin Kirk, (who you love on Weeds). The film starts when Fiennes' Paul Thompson decides he is going to accomplish one thing in his life, and that's swimming the length of the Hudson, from Troy, NY, to the Verrezano Bridge. His best friend Jeff Kane (Kirk), a bartender/aspiring actor, and Liz Clarke (Reaser), a schoolteacher, are along for the (very long) boat ride. And Mary Tyler Moore and Michelle Trachtenberg show up in small roles.

- What would Cannes be without Fortissimo Films? Actually what would any of the other big festivals be without this kind of 'company'? They got a foursome of projects which I am eagerly awaiting to see from helmers Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Tsai Ming-Liang and a Latin American product from Michel Franco. Sadly, this will be a bitter sweet Cannes for the company with the passing of an industry vet Wouter Barendrecht, who was an anchor in bringing the best of Asian films to North American audiences. In the near future we can look forward to the next Todd Solondz and Stephan Elliott projects and a "Marley" docu around the corner. Against The Current by Peter Callahan - Completed Air Doll (Kuki Ningyo) by Kore‐eda Hirokazu - Completed Black Oasis by Stephan Elliott - Pre-Production Children Of The Pyre by Rajesh Jala - Completed Daniel & Ana by Michel Franco

by indieWIRE (January 8, 2009) Editors Note: This is part of a series of interviews, conducted via email, profiling dramatic and documentary competition and American Spectrum directors who have films screening at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
According to the Sundance catalog, Peter Callahan's "Against the Current" concerns "Paul Thompson (Joseph Fiennes), a financial writer struggling with a tragic past who decides to do something special and unique to distinguish himself. Having always wanted to swim the 150 miles of the lower Hudson River, he recruits his best friend, Jeff (Justin Kirk), and new acquaintance, Liz (Elizabeth Reaser), to accompany him on a physical and emotional journey exploring friendship, grief, and how we cope when what we lose is greater than what life has to offer."...

Gossip Girl's Michelle Trachtenberg is slippin' on a winter coat and heading to the snowy Sundance Film Festival for her new movie, Against the Current. But you can get a sneak peek here first. I've got the only picture from the flick—costarring Joseph Fiennes—which will have its world premiere next month at the Utah film fest. The indie dramedy, written and directed by Peter Callahan, also stars Justin Kirk of television's Weeds, Twilight's Elizabeth Reaser and Mary Tyler Moore.

The sweet kid soldier film Johnny Mad Dog is playing in the spectrum section, and the Jesco White story White Lightnin' which we reported on earlier is in the Park City at Midnight section.
But where the hell is Stingray Sam?
Full list after the break.
Premieres
* "Adventureland," directed and written by Greg Mottola, stars Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds and Bill Hader in the story of a college grad who gets a job at an amusement park. A Miramax release.
* "Brooklyn’s Finest," directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Michael C. Martin, a drama about three Brooklyn cops who come together at the same deadly location. With Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, Don Cheadle and Ellen Barkin.
