The top cinematographers working on television reflect projects that truly embody why television is believed to be our best creative medium. Their projects touch the genres of fantasy, social dramas, superhero stories and family dramas. In a recent discussion, it was fascinating to hear which films influenced them into wanting to become cinematographers and what parts of the job they enjoy the most. Gold Derby recently had this discussion with Michael Fimognari (“Midnight Mass”), Antonio Calvache (“Queen Sugar”), Andrij Parekh (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Boris Mojsovski (“Titans”) and David Moxness (“The Wheel of Time”) during our recent “Meet the Experts” panel.

For cinematographer, Antonio Calvache, one of the most memorable moments of his career was when he first saw the area that would be used for shooting the sugar cane fields in “Queen Sugar.” “It’s a gift to be able to work in a project where the location has so much personality,” he tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematography panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). That location ended up serving as a huge influence, not just on him as a cinematographer, but the entire production. “It was our biggest source of inspiration for me and everybody in the team of ‘Queen Sugar’ to bring up the locals, these farms, the lushness and the history behind all of that.”

When it comes to cinematography, there’s a lot about the craft that regular viewers of film and television might not see or even understand.
“I think that there’s a lot that goes into making documentaries as a cinematographer and half of it has to do with personability and patience,” D.P. Jenna Rosher, Dana Gonzales (“Fargo”), Peter Deming (“The Good Lord Bird”), Antonio Calvache (“Queen Sugar”), and Hollis Meminger (“Younger”). Watch the group panel above. Click on each name above to watch that person’s individual panel chat.
“It feels more simple from the outside but I also enjoy that people think it’s easy,” Rev says when asked about cinematography misconceptions. “Maybe that makes it a little easier. We’re not in the foreground and I enjoy that part of this profession.”

When production on Season 5 of the OWN series “Queen Sugar” was forced to shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic last year, creator Ava DuVernay and her team decided it would make the most sense to retool the show to the current moment. That meant not just folding in the effects of the deadly health crisis in the show’s narrative, but also the murder of George Floyd, the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests that broke out last summer, and even the death of “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman.
During an April episode of the show, Blue (Ethan Hutchison) is shown mourning Boseman, who died in August of last year, during a conversation with Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe). As DuVernay explained after the airdate, the tribute was made possible thanks in part to the goodwill that exists between Disney executive Bob Iger and OWN boss Oprah Winfrey as well as...

Cinematographer Kira Kelly, who earned an Emmy nomination for her work on Ava DuVernay’s “13th,” feels that her time spent on nonfiction projects over the past two decades has improved her ability to cope with the demands of shooting narrative fare.
The scaled-down resources — often just Kelly and maybe a focus puller or a gaffer — have created a capacity for improvisation. “You have to light, set up and block the scene quickly,” she says of her time on a clutch of micro-budget productions. “[I’m able] to walk into a room or onto a set and know where the best places for the camera are, the lighting, and to do it fast.”
Shortly after “13th,” Kelly landed a gig on “Queen Sugar,” DuVernay’s Own drama about three siblings who move to Louisiana to run a massive sugarcane farm they inherited from their father. Kelly splits Dp duties with Antonio Calvache, who...

Just as sex scandals are pretty much as old as politics themselves, as long as we've had films, we've had cinematic depictions of sex scandals, usually serious and sometimes comedic. Whether filmmakers have had to be coy about the nature of the scandals -- see "The Best Man" or "Advise and Consent" -- or whether filmmakers have been able to directly tear sex scandals from the headlines -- see "Primary Colors" -- the ground has been fertile. Fortunately -- Unfortunately? -- sex scandals just keep coming along and we keep lapping them up, from Eliot Spitzer to John Edwards to Anthony Weiner. Bringing the genre to Sundance this year was "Zipper," a largely straight-faced approach to a plausibly finger-on-the-pulse topic, which falls flat because of a middle act in which the drama spirals into dated addiction craziness. When it's a political thriller, "Zipper" is respectably acted and presented and has some merit.

House M.D. and Tron: Legacy star Olivia Wilde has been cast in the thriller The Words, Variety reports.
Wilde joins a cast headed by The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper, who has signed on to play the role of a successful writer who learns that he must face the consequences of plagiarising another man’s work.
Jeremy Irons is set to play the wronged writer from whom Cooper steals his ideas, while Zoe Saldana, Ben Barnes, John Hannah, Dennis Quaid, Nora Arnezeder and the inimitable J.K. Simmons are also on board.
Olivia Wilde’s involvement is perhaps not surprising given that The Words will be the directorial debut of Tron: Legacy screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, who also wrote the script.

Briefly: Given that The Words is the directorial debut of Tron Legacy screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, we probably shouldn't be surprised that the latest addition to the film's cast is Olivia Wilde, who was one of the only highlights of Tron. The script, which hit the Black List, is about "a successful writer who discovers he has to pay a price for stealing another man's work." Bradley Cooper was recently locked to play the writer (two roles as writers, and now real-life screenwriting ambition, too!) though we don't know how Olivia Wilde's character relates to his. The rest of the cast is shaping up to be interesting: Jeremy Irons plays [1] the writer who was wronged, Dennis Quaid plays yet another wordsmith and Zoe Saldana has an unknown role. Today Ben Barnes, J.K. Simmons and John Hannah all signed on, too. A press release announces that Nora Arnezeder,...

Toronto -- Molly Parker and Garret Dillahunt are reuniting on the indie drama "Oliver Sherman" from Canadian producer the Film Works.
Parker ("Swingtown") and Dillahunt earlier worked together on HBO's "Deadwood" and next on the upcoming adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road," set for theatrical release on Nov. 25.

The project, to shoot in northern Ontario, marks the first feature from writer-director Ryan Redford. Antonio Calvache is Dop, while Paul Stephens and Eric Jordan of the Films Works share producer credits.
Mongrel Media will release the indie picture in Canada.
