Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown ruled the 73rd annual Tony Awards winning eight of the 14 awards they were nominated for including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical. The Sam Mendes-directed The Ferryman also won big winning four awards including Best Play and Best Direction.
Other big winners of the evening included Ali Stroker for her groundbreaking role in Oklahoma!, which also won Best Revival of a Musical. To add to that, Boys in the Band took home the trophy for Best Revival of a Play.
Acting accolades went to Bryan Cranston for Best Leading Actor in a Play for Network while The Waverly Gallery’s Elaine May took home the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Play. On the musical side, Tootsie’s Santino Fontana won for Best Leading Actor in a Musical and The Cher Show’s Stephanie J. Block for the Best Leading Actress in a Musical.

Reeve Carney, André De Shields and the rest of the original principal cast of London’s sold-out production of Hadestown will star in the upcoming Broadway staging, producers announced today.
Rounding out the principal cast will be Amber Gray, Eva Noblezada and Patrick Page. Hadestown, a musical, updated re-telling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, will begin previews March 22 at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre, with an opening night on Wednesday, April 17.

The acclaimed London production of singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown will transfer to Broadway this spring, producers announced today. Directed by Rachel Chavkin, the musical will begin previews at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Friday, March 22, with an opening set for Wednesday, April 17.
Casting will be announced shortly.

Anais Mitchell’s arresting folk-opera album “Hadestown” (2010) is now a stage musical, opening Monday at Off Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop. It’s possible not only to hear but see the Orpheus myth updated to a postapocalyptic Depression-era America. Mitchell proves herself a master of jazz, blues, and ragtime, and Broadway’s current crop of songwriters should take note: Not every “Hadestown” song is orchestrated to be a “Defying Gravity” showstopper. Kudos to Mitchell’s orchestrator, Michael Chorney. This duo presents an incredibly well-modulated score wherein sweet ballads aren’t automatically inflated into bombastic anthems.
