M3GAN, the new Blumhouse flick about a homicidal robot doll (in theaters Jan. 6), is not Hollywood’s first foray into little-girl AI.
A campy ’80s sitcom called Small Wonder followed the exploits of Vicki — an acronym for Voice Input Child Identicant — who was a child android played by Tiffany Brissette, then 10. The show was created by the late Howard Leeds, who wrote on Bewitched and The Brady Bunch. Leeds had also written on My Living Doll, a short-lived sitcom from 1964 starring Julie Newmar as a robot woman. He borrowed that premise for Small Wonder, which debuted in syndication on Sept. 10, 1985. (It aired on the newly launched Fox network from 1986 until its cancellation in 1989, then lived on in reruns.)
After a nationwide search for the role of Vicki, producers “just loved Tiffany,” says Dick Christie, who played her inventor dad, Ted Lawson, “because she could pull off that monotone for the first three seasons.

Homeland Episode 10: Brody Makes His Decision
Homeland reintroduced good old Dick Johnson, whose name brought Jessica to fits of giggles last week, now brought Brody one step closer to carrying out a terrorist act against the United States. Vice President Walden paid an overly anxious Brody a visit and asked him to run for Johnson’s seat.
When Brody wanted to see Carrie, I had hopes that maybe he would want to share with the CIA what plans Nazir has for the United States. Yes, I am that naive. Instead he took the opportunity to ensure there’s nochance the media can find out about them. Carrie sure as hell isn't going to tell anybody in the CIA,and she ensures him Jessica will never know. Since he knows fully well she already knows he and Carrie had sex, what does that mean? He said goodbye to Carrie, and she said good night.

Just when you thought you could relax and enjoy Homeland, another revelation chills us to the bone. Sure, we knew that what happened last week didn't mean Brody was in the clear. But I was still thrown by this episode's twists.
Afterellen Bait
We know better than to expect much in the way of girl/girl action from Homeland, but we did get a teeny bit of eye candy this week in the form of Helen Walker and her arms. I call this screencap, "Helen, yeah!"
Feelings, Feelings, Feelings!
Most of the feelings this week whirled around love and loss. Saul's wife Mira leaves and despite the tension between them in the days before, we finally see Mira break down on her way to the airport. She does love Saul — she just can't live with the fact that he will always choose duty over her.

Homeland, Season 1, Episode 8: “Achilles Heel”
Written by Chip Johannessen
Directed by Tucker Gates
Airs Sundays at 10pm Et on Showtime
Homeland has dabbled in thematically structured episodes already, but “Achilles Heel” took that to another level and by doing so brought to mind a lot of what made the best episodes of the failed AMC show, Rubicon, so great. You take a theme and you let it seep into all the ongoing storylines, and by doing so you add extra weight and character even when not much is actually happening story-wise. Except that in this case, a lot did happen outside of the central theme of love in marriage.
The episode worked in that theme on multiple fronts in what was actually something of a Carrie-light episode. Brody and Jessica have begun to clear the air and air starting to resemble a happily married couple. They get invited to...

Perhaps no decade has overstayed its welcome more egregiously than the 1980s. The party’s over, your guests have left, your spouse has gone to bed, and yet the ’80s are still jamming in your living room to Starship’s “We Built This City.” That’s not to say that everything from the ’80s was bad. Just most of it. The rest was mediocre. Yet for some reason, virtually every pop-culture property from the Reagan Era has been resurrected in recent years. Just last week, The Thing and Footloose were back in theaters, and though Footloose apparently proved to be...

If the '60s was the time when everyone was stoned out of their gourds and the '70s was the decade of bad taste, the '80s will be remembered as the decade when those two impulses collided head-on, giving us some of the strangest TV shows ever made. After all, what can you say about a decade that kicked off with Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari getting tarted up in drag in Bosom Buddies and then proceded on to Manimal, Knight Rider, Webster, and Alf? Still, maybe the most jaw-droppingly bizarre show of the Reagan era was Small Wonder...

Roger Ebert recently made people aware of a video on YouTube called The Open Road London.
The film was taken decades ago. The hustle and bustle of life in the city is enough to make you think that even after all technology has done for us we’re still as busy as ever. The Beefeater who just saunters in the frame, the double-decker busses, the police directing traffic by hand, it’s all very quaint. The amusing thing about this full color...

Small Wonder confirmed the age-old adage: If it looks like a ten-year-old girl and talks like a robot… it’s a Robot! When genius cybernetics engineer Ted Lawson (Dick Christie) brings home his top secret invention, a Voice Input Child Identicant or V.I.C.I. (Tiffany Brissette), life becomes anything but mechanic for the Lawson family. With Ted’s boss and nosy neighbors (the Brindles) next door, his family must pass off Vickie as a real child. It’s easy for his wife Joan (Marla Pennington) who can’t help dotting on her like a real daughter, but harder for his precocious son Jamie (Jerry Supiran) who uses Vickie to do his homework and ward off [...]...
