The SAG awards just got some Sad news. After nearly 25 years, TNT and TBS have decided that they will no longer air the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Deadline reports. The long-running awards ceremony began on NBC and has been on TNT since 1998. TNT's decision to drop the Long Angeles-based awards show—which is considered one of Hollywood's biggest nights—follows Discovery's April merger with WarnerMedia. This year's SAG ceremony also marked the last for executive producer Kathy Connell, who produced the awards show since its beginning. She will be replaced by Jon Brockett. "SAG Awards is engaged in discussions with Warner Bros. Discovery as well as other networks...

Updated with SAG-AFTRA statement: The SAG Awards need a new home: Deadline has confirmed that TNT and TBS will no longer air one of Hollywood’s major events.
Launched in 1995 on NBC, the SAG Awards have aired on TNT since 1998. The show has been staged at Santa Monica’s Civic Auditorium, the Shrine Auditorium, and Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. It returned to an in-person show in February, where Coda and Squid Game were the night’s big winners.
It’s not yet clear where the awards ceremony will land.
“SAG Awards is engaged in discussions with Warner Bros. Discovery as well as other networks and streamers regarding the broadcast rights to the show,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement provided to Deadline. “While the TNT Network has advised us that they do not expect to conclude a new licensing agreement with the SAG Awards prior to the expiration of the exclusive negotiating window,...

Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNets — the arm formerly known as Turner — is parting ways with the SAG Awards after 25 years.
TNT has run the SAG Awards since 1998, including this year, when the Screen Actors Guild returned to a live, in-person event and moved to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar (after being based at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall since 1997). NBC aired the first three years of the SAG Awards, which launched in 1995. TNT took over in 1998, and then TBS made it a simulcast in 2007.

SAG Awards Exec Producer Kathy Connell Announces Retirement, Previews Her Final Ceremony (Exclusive)
SAG Awards executive producer Kathy Connell, who helped launch the awards show 28 years ago and has been with the show ever since, has confirmed that this weekend’s ceremony will be her last.
“I am retiring,” she tells Variety. “It’s been 28 wonderful years. Well, last year was sort of interesting, but 27 wonderful years. It is time and I am looking forward to family and traveling. I couldn’t be more proud. I call it one of my two babies. One of my babies is a Title IX officer at Uc Irvine. And this is my other baby and, they’re both doing great and don’t need me anymore.”
Jon Brockett, who will executive produce Sunday’s SAG Awards with Connell, calls it a bit of an end of an era for the show. “Kathy’s been the leader of this ragtag band for a long time. I have...

SAG Awards Announces 2022 Production Team, Led by Executive Producers Jon Brockett and Kathy Connell
Jon Brockett has been tapped to serve as executive producer of the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year, joining returning EP Kathy Connell at the helm. Brockett had previously served as a producer on the show, and has been a part of the SAG Awards since its fifth show, while Connell has been with the ceremony since it began in 1995.
Brockett and Connell are a part of this year’s production team, which the SAG Awards announced on Thursday. Not returning are Hazy Mills Productions’ Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner, who served as EPs with Connell of the in-person 2019 and 2020 events, as well as last year’s pre-taped virtual special.
For 2022, as previously reported, the SAG Awards are shaking things up by moving venues, to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. There’s still no word yet on whether there will be a host for the show, which will air on Feb.

Despite the uncertainty that all of this season’s awards ceremonies are contending with around the impact of the Covid Omicron variant, the 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are forging ahead with a Feb. 27 ceremony with safety at the top of the list.
“Right now, we’re just continually monitoring the situation and we’ll follow every local government, guild, state and city guideline we can to make sure that it’s as safe and healthy as possible,” says Jon Brockett, one of two executive producers of the SAG Awards. “Whatever shape and form that comes in, we’re still moving forward for an in-person show at this point and our goal is to create a really meaningful experience.”

The Screen Actors Guild is making at least one major change to its awards as it prepares to return to a live, in-person event: A major venue switch. After being based at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall since 1997, the 28th annual event is moving to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar.
According to SAG Awards executive producer Jon Brockett, the decision to decamp for Santa Monica was a way to shake things up after being in the same facility for so long.
“We chose Barker Hangar because it’s a blank canvas,” he says. “We can create anything we want in this vast space that could accommodate all our needs including our carpet, showroom and post-awards gala.”

The 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place next year on February 27, 2022. That was the date originally reserved for the 94th Academy Awards — but with the Oscars moving to March 27, the SAG Awards will now fill that date.
The show will return to a two-hour telecast and be simulcast live on both TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. Et, the awards show confirmed. This past year, a pre-taped, hour-long event took place on April 4 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As part of the date announcement, the SAG Awards also revealed key deadlines and dates for next year’s show. For starters, submissions for nomination consideration will open on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021, and close Friday, Nov. 5, 2021. The eligibility window of airdate or premiere is between March 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2021.

The poor SAG Awards never stood a chance. A pretaped and condensed-to-one-hour version of the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards settled for 957,000 total viewers across TNT and TBS, according to Nielsen, a new all-time low for the annual special.
Last year’s show had 2 million total viewers on the Turner cable channels. That was the previous record low, and was down from 2.7 million viewers in 2019.
Comparing 2020’s two-hour (8 p.m. to 10 p.m.) telecast to 2021’s one-hour (9 p.m. to 10 p.m.) telecast, the special dropped 52% in terms of its overall TV audience.
Sag, indeed.
Interestingly enough, the bigger hit came on the TNT end — that cable network was down 62% from the prior year. TBS was *only* off by 39%.
While those are big declines, the SAG Awards are no anomaly. This year, the Grammys fell 51% and the Golden Globes sunk 60%.

SAG Awards 2021: Here’s What The Quick, Hour-Long Actors’ Party in the Actors’ Houses Will Look Like
SAG Awards executive producer Kathy Connell likes to refer to the annual ceremony as “the actors’ party in the actors’ house.” But in 2021, she means it literally: “This year, it’s really in their house!”
That’s because the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the Screen Actors Guild Awards (9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt April 4 on TNT and TBS) to not only go virtual, but also to do something that’s usually a non-starter for top-tier televised honors: Shrink to a completely pre-taped one-hour special. There will be no red carpet, no host and no set — so everything will take place from wherever the actors are.
“It became clear that people were going to stay in pods and need to stay safe,” Connell says. “And so, we looked at it and asked, ‘Is this a year to do a full celebration when everybody’s suffering as they are?’ But at the same time,...

This year results from the Screen Actors Guild Awards will be known before the ceremony even broadcasts on television. In an attempt to reframe the glitzy awards show amid the coronavirus pandemic, SAG Awards producers decided earlier this month to pre-tape the normally live event in the days before the Sunday, April 4 television broadcast. The hour-long ceremony air on TBS and TNT beginning at 8 p.m. Et, before a rebroadcast at 11 p.m. Et.
“We’re looking at trying to do a unique award ceremony in an hour and leave people saying, which they very rarely do [with an awards show], ‘Man, I wish we had more,’” executive producer Todd Milliner told Variety in early March.
Of course, the decision to pre-tape the awards show is not without risks. It’s extremely rare that such a high-profile competitive event would allow its nominees to know the results before the general viewing public. According to Deadline,...

This year’s SAG Awards are keeping it short and sweet in recognition of this socially distanced age of Covid-19. Executive producers Todd Milliner, Sean Hayes and Kathy Connell have revealed to Variety that next month’s ceremony will be pre-taped, including winner reveals, and be limited to just a one-hour running time.
“We’re looking at trying to do a unique award ceremony in an hour and leave people saying, which they very rarely do [with an awards show], ‘Man, I wish we had more,’” Milliner said.
The SAG Awards, which airs Sunday, April 4, at 9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt on TNT and TBS, won’t have a host, a red carpet or even a set. Instead, the show will include comedy bits mixed in with the SAG Awards’ signature “I Am An Actor” mini-speeches from performers. Those will be sprinkled throughout the hour along with winner announcements in 13 categories and the “In Memoriam.

In past years, the SAG Awards would be gearing up now for its big show, which has been held in January since the 12th edition in 2006. Obviously, the Covid-19 pandemic has rewritten all the rules, and in line with kudosfests including the Academy Awards, the annual program honoring actors has shifted later and will now air April 4 on TNT and TBS.
What the show will look like remains to be seen; with so much in flux and changing rapidly, it is unknown at this time if the show will be held in-person, virtually, or a combination of both. “This is definitely a wait-and-see situation,” says Kathy Connell, SAG Awards executive producer. “Variations of plans are in the works, but in this current environment, final decisions won’t be made until closer to [the show].”

There may be some changes in store for the 2021 SAG Awards because of the coronavirus pandemic.

While this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards saw categories dominated by multiple performers from the same show, that trend was truly started at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The SAG Awards combine the lead and supporting performances into one acting category per gender per genre. “While we understand the desire for supporting categories in television, with a two-hour show, we just simply don’t have the on-air time for four additional supporting actor awards,” says Kathy Connell, executive producer of the SAG Awards. In order to recognize “that actors in television never work alone, we proudly created the concept of an ensemble category” separately, rather than just hand out some awards before the televised show.
This results in fewer individual performer spots overall, but still ones that are likely to be filled by performers from only a handful of shows.

The Brett Kavanaugh hearings hung like a dark cloud over Hollywood’s first ever Pay Equity Summit, held today in Burbank. More than 300 attended.
“The hearings were exhausting, emotional and sometimes I was so angry I wanted to throw things at the television,” said summit moderator Tema Staig, executive director of Women in Media. Even so, she said, “It was a week that saw that those who attempt to diminish women are dinosaurs, and we all know what happened to dinosaurs.”
“People need to step up and be heroes,” she continued in her opening remarks, praising the two women who confronted Sen. Jeff Flake in the elevator shortly before he called for an FBI investigation into allegations hanging over Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation.
“We made some small steps in the delay of an accused molester to a really high job,” she said.

Image Source: Getty / Emma Kevin Winter On the heels of a monumental night at the Golden Globes this month, where women banded together by wearing black and putting sexual harassment and equal pay at the forefront, the Screen Actors Guild Awards followed suit by making some major (and historic) changes to this year's show. In addition to introducing a host for the first time ever (Kristen Bell was the inaugural emcee), the list of presenters featured only women. The impressive roster - which included Halle Berry, Patricia Arquette, Olivia Munn, Niecy Nash, Lupita Nyong'o, and Brie Larson - was a calculated move on the part of SAG-AFTRA; Kathy Connell, an executive producer of show, explained the reasoning behind the bold choice to The Hollywood Reporter in December, calling it "a unifying salute to women who have been very brave in speaking up" about sexual misconduct in recent months.

Kristen Bell wasn’t forking around when she opened the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night.
The actress took the stage saying, “I never thought I’d grow up to be the first lady, but you know what? I kinda like it” about her feelings in hosting the evening’s show.
Her first step of change as “first lady?” Cyberbullying — an initiative famously backed by current First Lady Melania Trump.
“Because I have yet to see any progress made on that problem — and I’m looking at you, Tony Hale,” said Bell, 37, pointing out to the Veep actor in the audience.
