The Writers Guild of America East is petitioning employers to ensure that protections are in place for journalists as AI technology develops.
The petition, signed by more than 1,000 members, calls for “immediate, good faith negotiations on AI,” including outside of scheduled contract bargaining, as well as “a guarantee that AI protections will be on the table in future bargaining.”
The petition also calls on employers to “publicly commit to never replacing a human worker with an AI tool,” something that has been a big concern among journalists, as well as film and TV writers in their recent strike.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order to try to establish protections for safety and security around AI, as well as an effort to mitigate its displacement of workers. But the labor provisions are limited to creating a set of best practices and principles, as further steps to preserve jobs likely would take congressional action.

A search is underway for a new head of the TV group, which is getting downsized, with several people — believed to be fewer than 10 — being laid off today. Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).

Jamie Lee Curtis is finally an Oscar-nominated actress, and “Michelle Yeoh is the reason,” she emotionally tells Variety. “Michelle Yeoh is the reason that for the rest of my life, you will say, ‘Oscar-nominated actress Jamie Lee Curtis.'”
Curtis, 64, is raw, unassuming, and undeniably grateful for this time in her life and the five decades that have preceded it. Curtis is the daughter of two Oscar-nominated actors — Tony Curtis (1958’s “The Defiant Ones”) and Janet Leigh (1960’s “Psycho”) — and the wife of the brilliant British comedian and filmmaker Christopher Guest (who is working on the sequel to “Spinal Tap”). After 38 years together, what’s her secret to a long-lasting marriage? “I will not be in the sequel to Spinal Tap,” she jokes.
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Curtis opens up about receiving her first Oscar nomination, thanks to her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis are teaming for an Amazon series based on Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels, Variety has confirmed with sources.
Kidman would star as Scarpetta with Curtis playing her sister, Dorothy. Sources say that deals for the show are not yet done, but that it is nearing a two-season order of eight episodes each at the streamer.
Reps for Amazon declined to comment.

Hollywood’s biggest agency is now even bigger after CAA’s acquisition of ICM Partners was (finally) made official earlier this week. While headlines have focused on how the behemoth is set to reshape the business, and how the four-agency town has been chopped down to three, competitors WME and UTA aren’t exactly taking their balls and going home.
This merger, UTA’s own spree of acquisitions, and WME’s crucial place in Ari Emanuel’s publicly traded Endeavor (Edr on the New York Stock Exchange) empire all speak to how the agency business of today (and of tomorrow) are about so much more than competing to represent A-listers. There are podcasts and advertising and books and influencers and marketing and data analytics all at play here — not to mention the changing media landscape led by tech-backed (read: incredibly rich and powerful) streamers.
Sometimes you have to fight consolidation with consolidation.

In a competitive situation, NBC is set to develop a drama series executive produced by best-selling author Patricia Cornwell and Matt Tolmach.
The project is titled “Red Stick.” Based on an original character created by Cornwell, it follows Dr. Annie Dodge, who is summoned from New York to her hometown of Baton Rouge, La., after the sudden death of her father, the city’s beloved coroner. Now, as she’s mourning the loss of her childhood hero, Annie finds herself reluctantly stepping into her father’s role to solve an ongoing murder while navigating the complicated waters of Bayou politics, Southern hospitality, and a simmering past romance. NBC has given the project a script commitment with a penalty attached.
Along with Cornwell, Samantha Humphrey will executive produce in addition to serving as writer and showrunner. Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl will also executive produce via Matt Tolmach Productions, with Sony Pictures Television producing.

In Taylor Sheridan’s gripping, satisfying drama, an FBI agent and a game tracker hunt a killer on the loose in the wintry vastness of Wyoming
‘Just the snow. And the silence. That’s all.” With these agonised words in the movie’s dying minutes, a key character summarises its two ambient ideas: a deathly whiteout in the piercing cold and an oppressive quiet, far from the city’s bustle where help in a crisis might conceivably be at hand. Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan – who scripted Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario and David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water – now makes his hyphenate debut as a writer-director with this gripping movie, muscular in its confidence and storytelling punch, the kind you could call a western forensic thriller. The screenwriter of Carol is set to bring Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta to the movies...
The long-running and wildly-popular adventures of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta are finally set to make their way to the movies. Scarpetta has appeared in over 20 books thus far, kicking off with 1990’s Postmortem, and the character is now in the hands of screenwriter Phyllis Nagy.
Nagy earned an Oscar nomination for her script to the excellent Carol, and her adaptation of Scarpetta won’t actually be directly based on any of Patricia Cornwell’s books. Rather that she’s charged with putting together an original story for the character, and we’re guessing that the plan here is to kick off a long-running series of movies.
The idea of a Kay Scarpetta film has been bouncing around for a while now, and at one stage, Angelina Jolie was heavily linked with the title role.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy has signed on to adapt Patricia Cornwell's untitled Kay Scarpetta film for Fox 2000.
Nagy, who was nominated for an Academy Award earlier this year for penning Carol's adapted screenplay, gives new life to the property that once had Angelina Jolie circling as the forensics master.
Scarpetta first appeared in Cornwell's 1990 novel Postmortem. In total, the character has appeared in two dozen best-selling books, most recently this year's Chaos. Fox 2000 has the rights to the entire series.

The 1991 disappearance and murder of Jackie Galloway, a vibrant and social woman in Sarasota, Florida, at first stymied and then shocked investigators.
Authorities eventually discovered that Galloway’s slaying was linked to the sexual assault of a second woman in the area — and that both crimes bore strange similarities to those described in a crime thriller novel that the main suspect owned.
Here are five things you need to know about the case, which will be featured on the next episode of People Magazine Investigates, airing Monday night on Investigation Discovery.

The story of Jackie Galloway — who suddenly disappeared in 1991 from her apartment in Sarasota, Florida — is equally a mystery and tragedy: While police quickly discovered her body, bound and bloody, it took them much longer to locate her killer and his motive.
The investigation, which is the focus of the next episode of People Magazine Investigates airing Monday, Nov. 21, on Investigation Discovery, featured a shifting cast of possible suspects; evidence of horrific violence; a speculative link to the Gainesville Ripper serial killer, who murdered college students not far away; and a curious connection to the Patricia Cornwell thriller Postmortem about a killer called “Mr. Nobody.

The 1991 murder of Jackie Galloway in Sarasota, Florida, has several mysteries: Why was the killer drawn to her, specifically? How much pain did she endure? What exactly happened to her after she vanished from her apartment one June afternoon — the day before her body was found, traumatized and bound by cords?
One mystery, perhaps, ties the others together: How much inspiration for the crime was drawn from a Patricia Cornwell crime novel? The man who ultimately pleaded no contest in Galloway’s murder, John Waterman, admitted to owning a copy of Cornwell’s book Postmortem and reading parts of it.

Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta takes a step closer to the big screen, as a writer is hired for her first movie...
For some time, there have been plans to bring the best-selling series of Kay Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwell to the big screen. And now it seems there may have been some progress.
Liz Friedman has now been hired to produce a screenplay based on the crime novels series, and Fox 2000 has also hired Melissa Rosenberg - a writer on the Twilight Saga and Marvel's Jessica Jones - to produce the film.
Friedman meanwhile previously co-penned the pilot for Orange Is The New Black, and was a writer and producer on House M.D. for seven of that show's eight seasons.

Far back in the mists of 2009, Fox bought the rights to Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta novels, with an eye on a movie franchise. Angelina Jolie was attached to star, and Kerry Williamson was writing the screenplay. Since then, we've heard nothing, and Williamson defected to James Patterson and adapted Alex Cross instead. But as Cornwell's readers will know, Scarpetta keeps fighting.Liz Friedman has just been pegged to write a new Scarpetta screenplay, making the jump to films after regular writing and producing gigs on the small-screen likes of Elementary, Orange Is The New Black and House MD. She's currently working on Netflix/ Marvel's Jessica Jones as an executive producer, and her Jessica Jones colleague, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, will also join the Scarpetta crew as a producer, along with Mark Gordon (Rampart, Arms And The Dudes) and Geyer Kosinski (the current TV Fargo).Intriguingly, when he's not wearing his producing hat,...

A modestly budgeted, female driven, adult-targeted potential franchise launching serial killer thriller feature. It's something that Hollywood hasn't really done much of since the late 1990s, back in the days when the two A.J.'s (Ashley Judd & Angeline Jolie) had book adaptations like "Kiss the Girls" and "The Bone Collector" tailored for them into solid little films.
One adaptation of a crime thriller novel series long in the works has been that of the Kay Scarpetta character from acclaimed author Patricia Cornwell. Fox 2000 acquired the film rights to the sixteen books (at the time) featuring the opera-loving workaholic coroner in 2009.
The plan was to craft an original forensic science-centric story based on the character rather than a direct adaptation of one specific novel such as "The Body Farm" or "From Potter's Field". It was also being shaped as a vehicle for Jolie, and would've kept the dark and grizzly tone of the books.

Perhaps some mysteries just aren't meant to be solved. But that adage hasn't stopped a hundred years' worth of conspiracy theories regarding the identity of Jack the Ripper, the still-never-officially identified serial killer who viciously murdered at least five women in London's Whitechapel district in 1888 and has been fodder for endless books, films and TV shows ever since. After giving a Body Of Proof midseason order serious consideration for the past several weeks, I hear ABC is throwing in the towel on the idea after running out of time. Even if the network and producing studio ABC Studios had figured out a way to make it happen and had actors and writers locked in to start work tomorrow, Bop wouldn’t have been ready to join the schedule until the last week of March. And neither ABC nor ABC Studios are anywhere near a workable plan for a Bop 2.0. “Sorry to disappoint some, but #bodyofproof will not be resurrected,” star Dana Delany tweeted today. “May she rest in peace. Time for new adventure.” Technically, it is possible for ABC and ABC Studios to consider an order for summer or next season but the more time lapses, the harder bringing back key players would be. As Delany indicated, she...

Director hoping to follow biblical epic Noah with Russian set spy thriller based on book by Jason Matthews
Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky is looking to take on spy thriller Red Sparrow as his next project, according to Deadline. Having completed shooting on his biblical epic Noah, Aronofsky is reportedly being sought for the adaptation of the novel by Jason Matthews.
Red Sparrow is set in post Soviet Russia, and centres around a female intelligence operative called Dominika Egorova, who is trained as a "sparrow", or honey trap specialist. She finds herself drawn towards the CIA agent she is assigned to, and they end up working together to uncover a double agent. The fact that Egorova is a former ballerina may or may not have attracted Aronofky's attention, given the success he enjoyed with Black Swan.

Renewed efforts are underway to get best-selling crime author Patricia Cornwell's crime-solving medical examiner character Kay Scarpetta on the big screen.
Cornwell is leaving currently publisher Penguin and has signed a two-book deal worth at least $10 million with HarperCollins imprint William Morrow. The first book of that deal is slated for release fall 2014.
Fox 2000 President Elizabeth Gabler is developing the movie and played a key role in author's move to William Morrow. Speaking about the deal, Gabler says: "one of our greatest priorities is to begin production on the film as soon as possible."
In fact the aim is to have the film in cinemas by 2015. At last report, Angelina Jolie was attached to play Scarpetta.
