ViacomCBS has promoted Jonathan Karp to CEO of Simon & Schuster, effective immediately, succeeding Carolyn Reidy, who passed away earlier this month.
Karp most recently served as president and publisher of Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing that includes Atria Books, Avid Reader Press, Gallery Books, Scribner, Simon & Schuster and associated sub-imprints and lines. Now he will oversee all of Simon & Schuster’s domestic and international publishing operations.
ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish called Karp “a key member of the leadership team that consistently delivered strong results” for the nearly century-old Simon & Schuster, “while expanding its readership across genres and formats. He is a highly skilled executive who is deeply committed to the collaborative process of publishing, and will no doubt build upon a storied legacy of success.”

Is there anything better than digging into a good book? For twins Jenna and Barbara Bush, it’s reading a good book together!
The former first daughters, 35, tell People and EW’s “Shelf Life” series that they love to indulge together in guilty pleasure reads, especially mysteries like Nelson DeMille’s The Lion’s Game and Paula Hawkins’ Into the Water.
“We love to read a good mystery when we just want to forget about everything,” says Jenna Bush Hager.
“And we like to read at the same time, so that we have someone to talk to about where we are in the book,...

One of best-selling author Nelson DeMille’s most popular protagonists, John Corey, is headed to the small screen. ABC has given a script commitment plus penalty to John Corey, a drama series project based on DeMille’s book series about the brash, quick-witted, and cocky NYPD homicide detective set in today’s social environment. Written by Detroit 1-8-7 creator Jason Richman, John Corey hails from Sony TV, John Davis’ studio-based Davis Entertainment and veteran producer Ma…...

I have seen some pretty oddball acts of book flakkery in my tenure as literary critic. There was the Fifty Shades knockoff that arrived at my door packaged with lingerie and a lipstick-smudged note; the pitch letter that impugned the intellect of any reviewer who declined to cover the book in question; the loon who implored me, weekly, to join her in discussing her novel in her private chateau in France; the book trailer for Nelson DeMille’s Wild Fire. But all of these, and many more, were handily trumped in brazenness and bad taste by Governor Andrew Cuomo’s impromptu act of book promotion yesterday. At a press conference about New York and New Jersey’s poorly conceived, poorly executed, much-criticized Ebola quarantine policy, the governor veered weirdly off-message — or on it, from that all-consuming perspective of, you know, the ego. “I'm asking those people who were in contact...

Author Nelson DeMille's famed witty detective John Corey from his various novels is coming to television.
DeMille has confirmed in a tweet that Lionsgate is producing a cable TV series adaptation of his 1997 novel "Plum Island" which could hopefully air as early as sometime during summer next year. He also adds that 'hopefully' John Corey will be played by Aaron Eckhart.
In the book, Corey is an NYPD homicide cop resting up on the eastern part of Long Island after being wounded in the line of duty. He's soon drawn into the investigation of the murder of a biologist couple he knows, a couple whose work could have global implications.

Exclusive: ICM Partners has bagged a big one. The agency’s publishing department has signed Nelson DeMille, the author of 15 bestselling novels. He was repped forever by Nick Ellison, but I’m told they quietly parted ways awhile ago. DeMille routinely sells millions of books with bestsellers By The Rivers Of Babylon, Cathedral, The Talbot Odyssey, Word Of Honor, The Charm School, The Gold Coast, The General’s Daughter, Spencerville, Plum Island, The Lion’s Game, Up Country, Night Fall, Wild Fire, The Gate House, and The Lion. He also co-authored Mayday with Thomas Block. DeMille is one of those authors who has made a ton of movie option deals, only to see most of them languish in development hell. The John Travolta-starrer The General’s Daughter was the one big feature (the 1999 film grossed $143 million worldwide). His books Mayday and Word Of Honor were turned into telepics. Sony...

New York is in chaos. Fires burn uncontested on deserted streets and avenues. Looters have their way with abandoned shops. Desperately overextended and underinformed emergency response teams are all that remain of the city’s shattered infrastructure. Masses of panicked citizens clog the highways and train stations, frantic for any means of escape. And what they don’t know is that they are fleeing a fate much worse than death.
The scene is thus set for The Fall (on sale September 21, 2010), Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s knuckle-bleaching second volume in The Strain Trilogy.

The Fall, the second chapter in Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's Strain Trilogy, was released by HarperCollins last week, and the publisher has shared with us a great video interview of del Toro discussing the book and the vampire lore that inspired him.

Bedbugs have run rampant in New York City offices this summer (Bedbugs In CBS' NY Offices), and Grand Central Publishing is the latest haunt to catch the bug. The publisher, whose Park Avenue offices near Grand Central Station are home to such bestselling authors as James Patterson, David Baldacci , Nelson DeMille and Nicholas Sparks, let staff know about the problem yesterday, and gave staffers the option of working from home today. There's a corporate outing tomorrow that will keep the troops out of the office, and nobody works hard in the publishing industry on Fridays during the summer, anyway. [...]...
