Honestly, there’s no better way to announce that you’re feel-good TV than by opening with a big red heart. And thus that’s exactly what “The Village” does in its first few minutes, not the first or last big obvious touch meant to make it clear that while the world might be a scary one, this is fundamentally a show about nice people who like each other.
NBC’s newest aim to tearjerk, created by Mike Daniels, focuses on the residents of a titular (and mythical) New York City apartment building. But unlike other NYC apartment buildings, the Village is special — all the residents go beyond friendship to help each other out because that’s just part of “the whole Village experience,” where the thin walls and tight bonds are only emphasized by the constant CGI zooming through each unit.
The large ensemble cast includes Frankie Faison, Lorraine Toussaint,...

Grimm, Season 3, Episode 15: “Once We Were Gods”
Written by Alan Difiore
Directed by Steven DePaul
Airs Fridays at 9pm Est on NBC
This week, on Grimm: Juliette reaches out to Wu, Adalind hoofs it, and Nick wrangles with the Council
Grimm explores folk lore and legend on a weekly basis, but this week they go further, adding religion to the mix with the revelation that the Ancient Egyptian gods were Wesen. It’s a fun idea and one that works well for the show, particularly when contrasted with the little we’ve seen of the Wesen community. There’s the spice shop and a few other Wesen-friendly (or Wesen-only) businesses and establishments, and of course the Wesen street gangs introduced this season, but on the whole, the Wesen we’ve meet over the course of the series have been more or less in hiding, passing as human and...

Grimm Episode 315
“Once We Were Gods”
Written By: Alan Difiore
Directed By: Steven Depaul
Original Airdate: 14 March 2014
In This Episode…
A construction team makes a strange discovery when they knock down a wall that hides a room that shouldn’t exist. In that room is an enormous sarcophagus shaped like the god Anubis. Dr. Vera Gates, from the nearby university, takes possession of the sarcophagus, a very important find in archeology circles. It’s a big enough deal that the local news does a story on it, and a couple douchebags take notice. That night, they break into the lab with the intention of taking the sarcophagus (or at least the mummy inside). A security guard catches them, and one of the douchebags volgs into an anubis himself. Another guard comes in, and it ends with anubis-douche dead, one of the guards dead, the other guard in serious condition, and...

Grimm, Season 3, Episode 4, “One Night Stand”
Written by Sean Calder
Directed by Steven DePaul
Airs Fridays at 9pm Est on NBC
This week, on Grimm: Rosalee moves in, Nick gets a clean bill of health, and Jake meets Ariel
While Grimm is rooted in fairy tales, this week’s episode is the first to seemingly take direct inspiration from a modern classic, The Little Mermaid. Usually the show takes a particular myth or folk tale as a jumping off point before going in a new direction, but “One Night Stand” is a break from this, providing direct parallels to several of the beloved film’s key elements. Elly, our main Nyad protagonist, loves Jake from afar and saves him from drowning, pulling him onto the land and resuscitating him. She stares lovingly at him as he blearily opens his eyes, not sure what he’s seeing, and then jumps...

Grimm Episode 304
“One Night Stand”
Written By: Sean Calder
Directed By: Steven Depaul
Original Airdate: 15 November 2013
In This Episode...
Two couples are hanging out around a bonfire on the beach. They are singing, laughing, drinking... typical twentysomething stuff. One couple, Dan and Anna, go for a swim. Sarah goes for more beer for her and Jake. Hiding behind the foliage, spying, is youngest sister Ellie, a deaf girl with a huge crush on Jake. She begs Sarah, “not that one,” Sarah dismisses her, marches back to the beach, jumps in the water, disrobes, and lures Jake out for a little aquatic sexytime. He is all too eager to join her. But things take a nasty turn when scaly, fishy hands (yes, hands) grabs the boys and drag them under. Sarah and Anna swim away, but Ellie can’t let this happen to Jake. She save him, and as he starts to wake,...

Grimm Episode 2.12 ‘The Waking Dead’
Written by Jim Kouf & David Greenwalt
Directed by Steven DePaul
Airs Tuesday 10.00pm Est on NBC
This week Grimm gets in on the zombie action, but as usual isn’t shy about acknowledging its sources, hence the slightly cheeky title. But hey, why should Georgia get all the undead? As the Us’s northern representative of all things weird (as shown by my map), it only seems fair that Portland should get a chance to play host to some resurrected bodies. And let’s be practical, they’ll keep better in a cool climate.
The job of playing Wesen is placed in the competent hands of Reg E Cathey (The Wire, House of Cards) who inhabits the role of Baron Samedi with cadaverous glee and the usual spark of subversive mischief in his eye. The Baron is at his usual job of animating corpses, but...

Last Resort, Season 1, Episode 4: “Voluntold”
Written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman
Directed by Steven DePaul
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Ever since the premiere of Last Resort, the issues and factors that have affected the USS Colorado have all happened in quick succession. In the span of a week, the submarine’s crew have found themselves going from respectable members of American society to international criminals, caught between a rock and a hard place, and going up against an adversary who is not only much more powerful, but whose orders they unquestioningly obeyed until very recently. The death of Redman at the hands of Serrat has only served to heighten the tension, so a boiling point spillover was inevitable, and the Us government’s attempts to accelerate the process not exactly helping. This episode sees some of the effects on a few characters who have been...

Grimm, Season 2, Episode 05, “Good Shepherd”
Written by: Dan E Fesman
Directed by: Steven DePaul
Airs Friday 9.00pm Et on NBC
It was as if a billion Texan voices cried out at the same time.
‘They did not just compare church goers to sheep!’
Oh yes they did. Grimm keeps adding to its bestiary (despite my fervent wish it wouldn’t because I’m the one who has to work out how to spell all those German names) although this week the writers stuck with the Blutbad as predator, which at least allowed Monro to socialise with one of his own, another reformed character. Cue a twelve steps type discussion along the lines of ‘how many months sober?’ I half expected the two of them to whip out their tokens and talk about that time they saw that girl dressed in *that* particular shade of red and it was only the...

“The Good Shepherd”
Written By: Dan E. Fesman
Directed By: Steven DePaul
Original Airdate: 28 September 2012
In This Episode...
Reverend Calvin shows up at the police station to file a complain. He says that over $300,000 has been stolen out of his church’s bank account. The bank claims they weren’t hacked - whoever moved the money to a numbered account in Curacao from an authorized computer: the church’s accountant, Norman. Norman has gone missing, and Calvin is only too happy to supply all the details. It is not long before Norman is discovered in the wood chipper at his day job at a mulch supply company. He would have been gone for good had he not had his hip replaced a few years ago - the iron hip jammed the machine.
Despite coming to the police - or perhaps because of it - Calvin becomes the number one suspect.
