Ten years ago today, TMZ published an audio recording of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling saying racist things surreptitiously captured by his mistress, V. Stiviano. The recording led to his downfall, and changed the NBA forever.
If you’re not a basketball fan, you might not remember the story. But FX’s limited series “Clipped,” which just got its first trailer today, makes a case for the Donald Sterling saga as a “People v. O.J. Simpson”-style story about race, class, power, and that unique corner of America known as Los Angeles.
Per FX, “Clipped” “charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league.”
“Clipped” stars Ed O’Neill as Sterling, a man who made his fortune building an L.

HBO had the Lakers, now FX has the Clippers. Will the series’ fates differ (as the real-life teams’ have), or will “Clipped” face the same quick, quiet end as “Winning Time”? We’ll find out this June, when FX’s latest ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation premieres exclusively on Hulu. The trailer was released Thursday, April 25 — just under six weeks prior to the premiere — and now you can watch the first footage below.
Set in 2013, the six-episode limited series stars Ed O’Neill as L.A. Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling and Laurence Fishburne as the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers. Formerly with the Boston Celtics (who won an NBA title in 2008), Rivers had just joined the Clippers when the owner’s racist comments went public, sending the organization into a tailspin and Sterling into a power struggle with Rivers, players, and the NBA at large. Original Easy A screenwriter Bert Royal is attached to write and direct a spinoff for Sony’s Screen Gems, Deadline has confirmed. The new teen comedy, which will mark the directorial debut for Royal, will be set at the same high school and exploring many of the same themes as the 2010 version. The Will Gluck-directed original was a career launcher for star Emma Stone and a huge success, both critically and financially, for the studio, taking in over $75M worldwide. Zanne Devine is returning to produce. Royal, who also wrote and executive produced the short-lived Freeform series Recovery Road, is repped by CAA, Writ Large, and attorney Adam Keller.

Screen Gems is developing a spinoff film to “Easy A,” the 2010 comedy that helped launch Emma Stone to leading lady stardom. The studio has tapped Bert Royal, the original screenwriter on the film, to write and direct the currently untitled spinoff, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
Royal, who is a writer and executive producer on the Freeform series “Recovery Road,” will make his directorial debut on the film. Zanne Devine is also returning to produce the spinoff movie.
“Easy A” was an updated, teen comedy take on “The Scarlet Letter,” in which a clean-cut student gets ahead in her social standing by making up a rumor and proudly flaunting the idea that she’s sexually promiscuous, despite that being a lie. The new film will be set at the same high school and will explore many of the similar themes as the original.

Nearly a decade after the success of “Easy A,” a spinoff of the coming-of-age comedy is in the works. Sources tell Variety that Screen Gems has appointed Bert Royal, who penned the first script, to write and direct the upcoming movie.
Insiders stress that the film is still in early development, as Royal is still in the process of writing the screenplay. After “Easy A” became a breakout hit, the studio opted to task him with directing duties as well. The spinoff will mark Royal’s directorial debut. Zanne Devine is returning to executive produce.

When Deadline runs its Most Valuable Blockbuster film profitability countdown each year, readers often ask about certain wildly profitable films that didn’t crack our top list. So we’ve once again had five overachievers (pics with production budgets under $40 million) broken down by the experts.
With the Disney-Fox merger now sealed, and event movies more prevalent, there are those low- to mid-budgeted films that can win out at the box office. Here’s proof of that from 2018.

The beloved animated series “Kim Possible,” which aired for five years on the Disney Channel in the early aughts, connected with its audience because it portrayed a strong but fashion-forward young woman who fought crime and got good grades. So it only makes sense that when the network decided to reboot the story and titular character as a live-action TV movie, the creative team behind it would want to preserve the message of female empowerment while updating the tale to relate to a whole new batch of 6 to 14-year-old viewers.
“When I first joined the project, it was right around the time ‘Wonder Woman’ had been released,” says executive producer Zanne Devine. “Given this moment in time, my pitch was this is ‘Wonder Woman’ for the prepubescent set.”

Updated with more insight: The horror franchise reboot craze which Hollywood reaped off during the early part of the millennium looked as good as dead last year.
Than this weekend, Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween, the 11th sequel in a 40-year-old franchise, opened to $76.2M, making it the best start ever for the John Carpenter franchise, second-best domestic debut for a horror movie and the second best October opening; Sony’s Venom setting an $80.2M record three weekends ago.
It’s an age old Hollywood business axiom: Say a certain type of movie isn’t possible commercially, until someone proves it is. Moviegoers’ tastes in horror in recent years have escalated to embracing original, smart fare such as Get Out, Split , Don’t Breathe, and A Quiet Place; pics that were quite often critically acclaimed.
Beginning with the Marcus Nispel directed, Jessica Biel 2003 headliner Texas Chainsaw Massacre ($28M opening,...

Disney Channel’s live-action “Kim Possible” movie is bringing back some familiar faces.
Christy Carlson Romano and Patton Oswalt are both set to appear in the upcoming film. Romano, who voiced the titular teen super-spy in the original series, will appear in a cameo role, while Oswalt will play the villainous Professor Dementor, the same character he voiced in the show.
The movie, which is expected to debut in 2019, stars Sadie Stanley as Kim Possible and Sean Giambrone as Ron Stoppable. The rest of the cast includes Alyson Hannigan, Todd Stashwick, Taylor Ortega, Ciara Wilson, Erika Tham, Issac Ryan Brown, and Connie Ray.
The original series launched in 2002 and ran for 87 episodes, and was nominated for an Emmy in 2003 for outstanding animated program. It also inspired two animated Disney Channel movies, “Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama” and “Kim Possible: A Sitch in Time.”...
