As a new biopic reassesses the legacy of Britain’s most famous ski jumper, Michael Edwards talks about the slippery slope to the Olympics, snobbery in the skiing world and how he went from earning £65,000 a day to bankruptcy
Michael Edwards, Aka Eddie Edwards, Aka Eddie the Eagle, admits the movie about his life had him in tears before the opening credits were finished. It could not have been a more accurate portrayal of the heart and soul of Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper, he says – even if, factually, it was only about 5% accurate.
It is 28 years since Edwards competed at Calgary in Canada, finishing last in both the 70m and 90m jumps, and getting about half the points of the man who finished second last. It was impossible not to laugh with, and at, Edwards. He was so warm and affable that he touched our hearts. And yet,...

Everybody loves an underdog story, and the Olympics are full of them. Between the summer and winter games, we have innumerable tales of people who defied the odds in order to become legends for their given sports. Eddie the Eagle represents the latest in a long line of iconic Olympic stories, but as it turns out: that story shared the spotlight with another inspiring tale involving a certain Jamaican bobsled team. According to Yahoo! Movies, or anyone who knows their Olympic history, Eddie the Eagle actually takes place at the same Olympic games depicted in the 1993 classic sports film Cool Runnings. Taking place at the 1988 Calgary Olympics, Eddie the Eagle centers upon British ski jumper (and total underdog) Michael Edwards (Taron Edgerton) as fights tooth and nail to become a member of the Olympic ski team. Cool Runnings takes place at the same games, only it focused ...

“Eddie the Eagle” soars into theaters this weekend and while Dexter Fletcher’s crowd-pleasing sports film is absolutely terrific, one element stands out for the wrong reasons — Hugh Jackman‘s cigarette smoking. In the film, Jackman’s Bronson Peary is depicted as a former golden boy skier turned burnout who drinks and smokes with reckless abandon — and coaches Taron Egerton’s Michael Edwards to become the British athlete to compete in Olympic ski jump when he finished last in every event he entered at the 1988 Winter Games. Cigarette smoking is one of the reasons that 20th Century Fox’s otherwise family-friendly film earned a.

Last week I said we’d be back at the Olympics, and indeed this week’s new release puts us back in the cheering section as another young man hopes to make his dreams of gold come true. While Race focused on American track legend, Jesse Owens, this time out we’re looking back on a British athlete, not from the Summer games but the Winter spectacle. Oh, and it’s during a less controversial era. Owens was pressured not to attend those 1936 games that were often used as a propaganda tool by Hitler. In 1988 no such pressures were brought to bear on this new film’s title hero. And while Owens also had to break past racial barriers, Michael Edwards (his birth name) faced a rigid class system and beurocrats determined to keep him out of competition. But in this “feel good” flick Michael’s determination earns him the nickname Eddie The Eagle.

We've just cleared the season of Serious Movies, and are still in the doldrums of the early year, lukewarm releases. Few cinematic tropes are tailored to as wide an audience as that of the underdog story; particularly in the sporting genre, with dramas in the vein of Hoosiers and Remember the Titans often remembered fondly for championing a luckless team or individual overcoming the odds just when everyone believed them to be down and out. Step forth, Eddie The Eagle.
Whether Dexter Fletcher’s real-life sports biopic is held in the same regard as those aforementioned genre classics in years to come is up for question, though for now, footballing stars such as Russell Wilson, Drew Brees and former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner trumpet the film’s arrival in today’s all-new teaser.
Featuring the admittedly slanted reactions of Wilson, Brees and Warner, there’s little in the way of new footage from Eddie the Eagle actually included. One thing’s for sure, however, 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate...

After breaking out in the superb comic book actioner Kingsman: The Secret Service, Taron Egerton is now poised to scale new heights in Eddie The Eagle. Directed by Sunshine on Leith helmer Dexter Fletcher, the film tackles the world of Olympic ski jumping with Egerton front and center as British competitor Michael Edwards. The sports flick is based on the inspirational story of Edwards’ experiences in preparing for the 1988 Calgary Winter Games. And now the first trailer for the movie has arrived to whet your appetite.
On board to accompany him on those snowy slopes, and to deliver go-get-‘em speeches, is Wolverine himself Hugh Jackman. The X-Men veteran plays Edwards’ coach Bronson Peary, who guides the young Brit during his quest to become the first Briton to participate in the ski-jumping category.
As evidenced in the trailer, the overall feel of the movie is far from a terse, straight-faced biopic.
