Screen Gems has acquired the spec script Border Patrol, with genre filmmaker James Wan and Michael Clear on board to produce the project through their company Atomic Monster and Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) set to direct the film. According to Deadline, Screen Gems enjoyed their working relationship with Roberts on Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City so much that they “moved fast to land the rights” to this spec script package so they could work with him again.
The initial script for Border Patrol was written by Noah Griffith and Daniel Stewart, whose previous credits include the Netflix series Sweet Tooth, the DC Comics-inspired series Swamp Thing, and the Stephen King-inspired series The Mist. Griffith and Stewart’s script is now being rewritten by Gregg Hurwitz and Philip Eisner, the duo who wrote the Netflix film Sweet Girl. “Event Horizon” had an inauspicious start. Released in theaters August 15, 1997, it opened to mixed reviews and #4 at the box office. And then, a funny thing happened: In December 1998, when “Event Horizon” was released on the still-new DVD format, it started to find a cult following.
“That really propelled ‘Event Horizon’ to a new audience,” director Paul W.S. Anderson told IndieWire. “It’s a great-looking movie, and when you were watching it on VHS it didn’t really have the quality that it had in the cinema. When the DVD came out the quality jumped, and I think the stark beauty finally kicked in.”
Once the studio realized what they had, they made the most of it. “They started selling a lot of DVDs, and they would change the box without changing the movie, and they’d sell a lot of that version,” he said. “Then they’d change the box again!

As someone who has been a huge fan of Event Horizon ever since it was released in 1997, I’m always on board for anything that celebrates this audacious, terrifying, and grotesquely beautiful exercise in cosmic horror. Written by Philip Eisner and directed by (my boy) Paul W.S. Anderson (who was still just Paul Anderson at this stage in his career), there’s no denying that Event Horizon wears its influences proudly on its blood-stained sleeve, but there’s something about how Eisner approached those homages he works into his script that felt unusual and thought-provoking at the time the film was hitting the big screen during the summer of that year. And I’d be so bold as to say that even now, Event Horizon feels like a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic excursion in sci-fi and pure, unfiltered horror that rarely ever comes along out of the studio system.

This is a good week to be a horror fan who collects home media, because we have some killer releases headed our way on Tuesday. Personally, I’ve been waiting ever so patiently for Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition release of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon, and my patience is finally going to pay off tomorrow, as not only are we getting a 4K scan of the film, but the Blu is also chock-full of special features I cannot wait to dig into. Scream Factory is also giving Julia Ducournau’s Raw a stateside Blu-ray release finally, and Arrow Video is showing some love to Patrick Picard’s The Bloodhound this week as well.
We also have two Steelbooks that will be available this Tuesday: Gattaca in 4K as well as the 40th anniversary release of Friday the 13th Part II, and if you need to play catch-up,...

If you've listened to our Corpse Club podcast, then you know that several of us here at Daily Dead are very passionate fans of Event Horizon, so we're extra thrilled that Scream Factory will release the 1997 sci-fi horror film on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray. Previously slated for a release last fall, the Event Horizon Collector's Edition Blu-ray is now coming out on March 23rd (due to efforts to find lost footage from the film), and the full list of special features indicate that it will be well worth the wait.
We have the official press release with the complete list of bonus features below. Longtime Event Horizon fans may notice that the extensive bonus features don't include the movie's lost footage, but there is still a lot of new content to look forward to, and Scream Factory discussed their efforts to find the lost footage in a post on Facebook...

Marred by a troubled production, Event Horizon was a box office flop in 1997. But time has been kind to the sci-fi horror movie.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
In the spring of 1997, movie journalism was dominated by discussions of doomed ships. James Cameron’s Titanic, originally scheduled for the lucrative 4th of July slot that summer, had suffered yet another delay. It added fuel to the growing speculation that Cameron was at the helm of a potential disaster akin to Heaven's Gate. The cost of making the movie had swollen to such huge levels - $200 million according to some accounts, and possibly higher according to others - that the financial burden was shouldered by two of Hollywood’s biggest studios, Fox and Paramount.
Speaking to the La Times in April that year, Titanic’s first assistant director Sebastian Silva admitted that “The horror stories...

Slash likes horror movies. Enough so that the top-hat wearing Guns N’ Roses guitar player launched Slasher Films last fall by setting up “Nothing To Fear”, written by Jonathan W.C. Mills. Now the bushy-headed shredder has acquired three new genre properties. Jay Russell is attached to direct “Wake the Dead”, a contemporary re-imagining of “Frankenstein”. It is adapted from the graphic novel by Steve Niles, whose work has been turned into such films as “30 Days of Night”. A deal is being made to produce “Theorem”, to be helmed by “Splice” director Vincenzo Natali from a script he wrote with Mike Finch…about a genius college professor who, trying to break down the genetic compound of an ancient artifact, discovers it’s a relic from hell and that he has unwittingly unlocked the equation for evil. Steve Hoban is producing. The third film is “The Other Kingdom”, written by Philip Eisner,...

In addition to the previously-announced Nothing to Fear and an adaptation of Steve Niles' Wake the Dead , Slash's production outfit, Slasher Films, will shepherd Theorom and The Other Kingdom . Vincenzo Natali - of Cube - is poised to direct Theorom , which finds him returning to the horrors he explored in Splice when a college professor unleashes a genetic evil after unlocking an ancient relic. Philip Eisner, meanwhile, penned The Other Kingdom and will make his directorial debut. Eisner also wrote Event Horizon . This time, he has scripted a tale about a hospital staff who has to defend itself from people infected with an alien pathogen. All Slasher Films will be co-produced by Scout Films.

Along with an adaptation of Steve Niles' Wake the Dead, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has announced three more films that have a great chance of falling under his Slasher Films banner. Dig it!
According to Bloody Disgusting "Slash has partnered with Michael Williams and Rob Eric of Scout Productions (Transsiberian, Session 9, The Fog of War, Mr. Death) and is in negotiations to acquire three new feature film packages under the shingle that will produce edgy, contemporary horror films.
The first film to be produced under the new moniker will be Nothing To Fear, a horror/thriller revolving around two young sisters and their family, who accidentally discover one of the seven gateways of Hell in a small town in rural Kansas. Several directors are currently circling the project, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana this summer.
Slasher Films is also negotiating to produce Vincenzo Natali's Theorem.

Mutant Chronicles tries to be The Dirty Dozen meets Aliens but it’s really more like Pearl Harbor meets The Chronicles Of Riddick. In case you couldn’t guess, that’s Not a compliment. It’s out today from Magnolia (reviewed from the $26.98 single-disc DVD; also available as a $29.98 two-disc Collector’s Edition DVD; $34.98 Blu-ray).
Director Simon Hunter and screenwriter Philip Eisner haven’t been prolific in the last decade. Hunter hasn’t helmed a feature since 2000’s Lighthouse (a decent horror movie) and Eisner has only added Firestarter: Rekindled to his credits since penning Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon. Perhaps both have gotten a little rusty over the years, because Mutant Chronicles is a boring, flavorless, sermonic flick that dulls with its repetitive, exhausting “action” sequences and tiresome, pedagogical passages on the values of religious conviction and blind faith.

We've been following Mutant Chronicles for a long time. The cast sounded great, the early posters looked incredibly cool and then the trailer looked somewhat campy. Not exactly a bad thing -- maybe this could even become a cult sci-fi hit. Magnet Releasing is showing faith, as the company has acquired the Us distribution rights to the film and already has a theatrical release set.

Fango got the word that Magnolia Pictures has picked up the U.S. rights to Mutant Chronicles, the grisly sci-fi action-thriller based on the popular role-playing game. The film will be distributed under Magnolia’s genre-centric Magnet banner.
Mutant Chronicles will first appear as a video-on-demand title from Magnolia parent the Wagner/Cuban Company’s Ultra VOD service, premiering Friday, March 27. It’ll then receive limited theatrical release on April 24; as we reported here, the movie will have its broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi Channel later this spring. Dead Of Night’s Simon Hunter directed from a script by Event Horizon’s Philip Eisner, with The Mist’s Thomas Jane (pictured), Hellboy’s Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich starring. “Mutant Chronicles is a blast,” says Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “It’s an action-packed thriller with a dynamite cast and very impressive production values. Rating: 5 out of 10
Dr Nathan is unsure about steampunk extravaganzas like Mutant Chronicles – there is a certain stylistic joy imbedded in the fetishization of non-digital machinery, but ultimately you have to be very careful not to let the sets and props take over from the story, or you end up with the equipment as the movie’s stars, and the actors merely attendants with oil cans, or, in this case: god, guns and swords.
Mutant Chronicles does a good job of balancing the props and people so one doesn’t dominate, but unfortunately the people side is somewhat hampered by a less-than-stellar script and a proclivity to endless preaching about how god is love and love is life, and how these rotten mutants aren’t even life, but unlife, yadda yadda, and...

The studio paid about $750,000 for the pitch, which revolves around three men who form a neighborhood watch. The property is the latest in a number of recent acquisitions for Rudin, who has been on a spending spree lately. Last month, Rudin acquired Philip Eisner's family melodrama/supernatural thriller, Furious Angels, as well as Michael Cunningham's Specimen Days. With several projects on the fast track, Rudin recently set Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker to star in the comedy Failure to Launch.
