Capitalist demon Paul Robinson rides again! Neighbours is returning. After bowing out to much fanfare in July following its Channel 5 cancellation, a new series of the Australian soap is due to air on Amazon Freevee in the latter half of 2023. Actor/Feel Good Maker Stefan Dennis will be back as Paul Robinson, joined by Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne as Karl and Susan Kennedy, and Ryan Moloney as Toadfish Rebecchi.
Is it good news? It is for the cast, obviously, who won’t have to rely solely on UK panto roles and Strictly Come Dancing to pay the bills. It’s also good news for fans of cancelled shows everywhere crossing their fingers for resurrection.
For viewers though, it feels like… medium news, a bit like finding out the family pet you buried months earlier has come back to life. Obviously ‘hooray’ but also, Rover is still pretty old and smelly,...

After airing what was thought to be its final episode earlier this year, Neighbours is set to make a shock return to screens in 2023.
The Australian soap was cancelled in February after Channel 5 decided to stop airing the show in the UK. When production company Fremantle was unable to find another channel to carry the programme, the show was cancelled altogether due to a lack of funding.
To mark the end of the programme, several notable actors from the show’s 36-year history returned to say goodbye, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Holly Valance and Guy Pearce.
The final episode drew in 2.5 million viewers – a significantly higher number than usual.
However, an announcement made on Thursday (17 November) has confirmed that the show has been picked up once again by Amazon Freevee, with new episodes to air next year.

In a plot twist that could have come straight from the show itself, Neighbours, the iconic Australian soap that looked like it had finished for good after 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes, is set to make a dramatic return.
Amazon Freevee and the show’s producer Fremantle have unveiled that a new season of the beloved series — which helped launch the careers of a host of stars, including Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce — will start shooting in Australia next year, continuing the long-running drama involving the residents of Ramsay Street in the fictitious Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough. Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney and Jackie Woodburne will return to reprise their leading roles.

Turns out it wasn’t a final goodbye from Australia’s Neighbours after all.
The iconic soap, about the Ramsay Street residents living in the fictional Erinsborough, has been saved from the scrapheap by Amazon’s free streamer Freevee, following a deal with program maker Fremantle.
A new series will begin filming in Australia next year, with the likes of Stefan Dennis, Alan Fletcher, Ryan Moloney and Jackie Woodburne reprising their roles. A premiere is slated for the second half of the year.
Watch a teaser for the new run here.
The daily series had bowed out on Network 10 in Australia and long-time British home Channel 5 in June after 37 years, after the Paramount-owned UK network pulled its funding from the show. Due to the costs of running a daily drama, Network 10 and Fremantle relied on a British co-funder to keep it going.

Network 10 and the UK’s Channel 5 have commissioned an extra five episodes of Fremantle’s Neighbours to mark the show’s 35th anniversary.
The anniversary week kicks off at 6.30 pm on March 16 on 10 Peach as Chloe Brennan (April Rose Pengilly) get the idea to stage a wedding expo to save Lassiters, with help from Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou).
This evolves into five weddings, one per episode, reuniting couples from different decades on Ramsay Street that didn’t make it down the aisle.
In contrast, the bonus episodes at 7 pm have a darker, grittier tone with the deaths of three Erinsborough favourites.
The drama centres around Elly Conway (Jodi Anasta) being whisked away to Pierce Greyson’s (Tim Robards) remote island glamping resort to celebrate her 35th birthday with a group of Ramsay Street friends including Toadie (Ryan Moloney).

Gary Conway.
One of Australia’s most respected and prolific TV directors who started his career at Crawford Productions in the 1960s, Gary Conway died on Friday in a hospice in Melbourne, aged 73.
Conway directed nearly 800 episodes of Neigbours, beginning in 1988, and worked on the Fremantle show until late last year when he was forced to stop after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
“Gary was a great mate to me and to many, many others,” his friend and long-time colleague, composer Garry (Sam) Hardman tells If.
“Gary started at Crawford’s a couple of years before I did. I met him when I started with the company in 1965. There were 45 people on staff back then and Gary was the company’s art department.
“He would make up the credit cards for Homicide and Hunter as well as the ‘fake signs” for filming that could turn an ordinary office building into a federal bank.

Alan Fletcher is often mistaken for a real doctor. The 'Neighbours' star has played womaniser Dr Karl Kennedy in the Australian soap opera for 21 years and, although he's just an actor playing a medic, he has admitted people often ask him to diagnose their embarrassing issues. He explained: ''The only time I'm asked stuff is by young men - and then they're usually asking about their nether regions.'' And it looks like the 58-year-old actor is set to be bombarded with even more bizarre questions soon, as he's planning to spend more time in the UK after 'Neighbours' was given the go-ahead...

The 58-year-old actor has played womaniser Dr Karl Kennedy in the Australian soap for 21 years, but he has admitted he has no plans to hang up his stethoscope and won't consider retirement until he's dropped from the show. He said: ''I have no plans to retire as long as I am having a great time and for as long as 'Neighbours' wants me to be there.
