Ofcom has begun the procedure to issue Gb News with a sanction following a “serious and repeated” breach of its code over a People’s Forum show in which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took questions from a live audience.
Ofcom has today said Gb News once again failed to “preserve due impartiality,” a section of the regulator’s code that the right-leaning news network has repeatedly fallen foul of, with Sunak given a “mostly uncontested platform to promote the policies and performance of his government” in this instance.
In The People’s Forum, Sunak was questioned by a live audience about the government’s policies and performance, in the context of the forthcoming UK general election.
The show almost immediately drew criticism for being one-sided and attracted more than 500 complaints to Ofcom.

Laurence Fox has been ordered to pay £180,000 in damages to a former RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star and charity trustee he called “paedophiles” on social media.
The former Gb News host lost his libel case against Crystal, whose real name is Colin Seymour, and Simon Blake, a trustee of UK charity Stonewall, several months ago.
According to Pa, he has been ordered to pay £180,000 in damages, split evenly between Crystal and Blake.
“By calling Mr Blake and Mr Seymour paedophiles, Mr Fox subjected them to a wholly undeserved public ordeal,” the judge was reported to have said by Pa. “It was a gross, groundless and indefensible libel, with distressing and harmful real-world consequences for them.”
Both Crystal and Blake have previously said they faced abuse after the former Lewis star’s tweet and posted on X after the trial that “a huge weight” had been lifted. Crystal competed in...

The boss of Gb News has criticized Ofcom for being too slow with its investigations.
The UK regulator is in various stages of more than a dozen Gb News probes and rapped the network over five breaches of its code last week in what was its biggest finding since Gb’s launch.
But CEO Angelos Frangopolous said the regulator needs to speed up “so that any learnings we could take from the outcome [of investigations] we can apply immediately.”
Speaking to a House of Lords committee, the former Sky News Australia boss said “there is a large gap between investigations being started and receiving the outcome of the investigation, and receiving outcomes 12 months after an investigation has started is really difficult for us to operate in.”
“We’ve had more than 50 enquiries from Ofcom in the past three years and we have responded diligently and professionally and on time,” he said. “It...

Ofcom has delivered its biggest Gb News judgement yet, finding the network in breach on five different occasions over the thorny issue of politicians acting as news presenters.
Ofcom said Gb News is now “on notice that any repeated breaches of Rules 5.1 and 5.3 may result in the imposition of a statutory sanction” that could include a fine. Sanctions can also include a direction not to repeat content, a direction to broadcast a correction or a statement of Ofcom’s findings and, in the most serious cases, shortening, suspending or revoking a licence.
The shows found to have been in breach are two episodes of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s State of the Nation, two episodes of Friday Morning with Esther and Phil, and one episode of Saturday Morning with Esther and Phil, broadcast during May and June 2023. These episodes broke the part of the Ofcom code that says, “News, in whatever form,...

Jeff Zucker did not hold back today in taking on some of Britain’s biggest media stalwarts as RedBird Imi pushes on with its bid to buy The Telegraph and Spectator publications.
Speaking to The News Agents podcast, the former CNN boss hit out at Andrew Neil, chair of The Spectator, and Paul Marshall, co-owner of right-leaning news network Gb News, who has made a rival bid for The Tele.
Zucker blasted Gb News founder Neil as “quite the hypocrite” after alleging that Neil had been interested in becoming chair of a combined Editorial Trust Board for The Telegraph and Spectator, which RedBird Imi turned down.
“And ever since that day, he’s been one of our most vocal critics,” Zucker said. “And I think that says all you need to know about Andrew Neil. And since I am sure that he’s going to deny this and pretend that didn’t happen,...

Exclusive: UK Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has said the 40% indie film tax relief will bring balance to a movie sector that has swung too far towards big-budget fare in recent years.
The Conservatives unveiled the relief yesterday on films below £15M ($19M) budget, which was celebrated as a “game-changer” by figures ranging from Christopher Nolan to Ridley Scott to Gurinder Chadha.
Frazer said the latest set of tax reliefs brought in by the government, which it predicts will be worth £1B in additional relief over the next five years, are the “continuation” of a decade’s worth of work and will level the playing field between big-budget U.S. movies like Barbie that filmed in the UK and smaller indie fare.

Controversial broadcaster Dan Wootton has quit Gb News a day after Ofcom rapped his show over Laurence Fox’s “unambiguously misogynistic” rant.
Wootton said in an X statement that he will launch his own platform, “which will feature a brand new daily news and opinion show from later this year that will not be regulated by the Ofcommunist censors.”
He slammed the Ofcom ruling, adding: “Yesterday’s chilling Ofcom report clearly raises far bigger issues. How can any British broadcaster truly stand for freedom of expression when state goons have the power to decide what you are and are not allowed to say on air? Unlike the freedoms enjoyed in the US thanks to the first amendment, how can these media outlets ever be anything other than controlled opposition?”
A Gb News statement said: “Dan Wootton joined Gb News before its launch and was a part of the first on-air line up.

Update: Actor turned right-wing political activist Laurence Fox’s misogynistic rant on episode of “Dan Wootton Tonight” on U.K. channel Gb News has fallen afoul of media regulator Ofcom.
Comments made during the program by Fox targeting female political journalist, Ava Evans, prompted 8,867 complaints to Ofcom with viewers expressing concerns that his remarks were sexist, misogynistic and offensive.
Ofcom launched an investigation into the matter. “We found that Mr. Fox’s comments constituted a highly personal attack on Ms. Evans and were potentially highly offensive to viewers. They reduced her contribution to a broadcast discussion on mental health – in her professional capacity as a political journalist – to a judgment on whether she, or women like her who publicly expressed their political opinions, were sexually desirable to men,” Ofcom said. “As such, we considered that Mr. Fox’s comments were degrading and demeaning both to Ms Evans and women generally...

British actor Laurence Fox has lost a libel case with two men he called pedophiles on social media after they had called the My Son Hunter star a racist.
On Monday, the High Court in the U.K. deemed that Fox had defamed Simon Blake, a former LGBT charity trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, on Twitter/X in October 2020, when he called them pedophiles over an escalating row over Black History Month.

Laurence Fox has lost his libel case after calling two people including a former Drag Race contestant “paedophiles” on social media.
The actor-turned-politician, who was fired by Gb News late last year for highly misogynistic remarks, heard his comments labeled “harmful, defamatory and baseless” by a High Court judge this afternoon in London, according to the BBC.
Fox was sued by former RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestant Crystal and Simon Blake, a trustee of UK charity Stonewall, after referring to them as “paedophiles” on X, formerly Twitter.
Both have previously said they faced abuse after the former Lewis star’s tweet and today posted on X after the trial that “a huge weight” has been lifted. Crystal, whose real name is Colin Munro Seymour, competed in the first season of Drag Race in the UK.

Dan Wootton’s eponymous Gb News show and King Charles III’s coronation attracted the most complaints from U.K. viewers in 2023 according to Ofcom.
The U.K. media regulator has unveiled its list of the most complained about shows this year. Unsurprisingly, most of them were current affairs-related.
A September episode of Wootton’s show, “Dan Wootton Tonight,” topped the list with 8,867 complaints after the anchor and his guest, actor Laurence Fox, made what Ofcom called “misogynistic comments” about a female journalist. Ofcom is currently investigating the complaints.
Meanwhile it was “Bridgerton” star Adjoa Andoh’s comments during the king’s coronation back in May that attracted the second highest number of objections, with Ofcom receiving 8,421 complaints. Andoh, a guest commentator on ITV’s broadcast of the ceremony, remarked that the Buckingham Palace balcony was “terribly white” as King Charles and his family appeared to wave to the crowds.

Exclusive: Newsnight editor Stewart Maclean has unexpectedly quit as the BBC considers making dramatic cuts to its flagship current affairs show.
After less than two years leading Newsnight, Maclean has decided to become BBC World News Content’s Africa bureau chief, meaning he will relocate to Nairobi, Kenya.
Sources said the timing of Maclean’s departure has left colleagues “aghast” because it coincides with a period of uncertainty for Newsnight.
BBC News managers are looking to make up to £5M ($6M) of cuts to Newsnight, with talks ongoing over axing its team of correspondents and making the show more debate-led in its content.
Many think stripping Newsnight of its original reporting could sound the death knell for a show that has been an agenda-setting fixture on BBC2 since 1980.

The Laurence Fox rant on Dan Wootton Tonight is now comfortably the most complained about broadcast of the past two years while complaints have come flooding in for yet another Gb News show, Lee Anderson’s interview with Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
Another 1,500 complaints have been filed to regulator Ofcom over Fox’s rant, bringing the total close to 9,000 and meaning the edition has now totted up the most complaints since an episode of Love Island in August 2021, which attracted nearly 25,000.
The Dan Wootton Tonight episode, which has seen both Wootton and Fox suspended and Ofcom open an immediate investigation, featured Fox making highly misogynistic comments about female political journalist Ava Evans. He claimed no “self-respecting man” would “climb into bed” with her, while Wootton could be heard laughing before he later apologized on social media. Wootton has also had his MailOnline column terminated. Evans has said she has received multiple threats on social media.

The journalist at the heart of the Gb News storm in the UK says she fears for her safety and is uncertain whether she will be able to carry on in her job.
Ava Evans, who works for the Political Joe website, found herself at the centre of a media debacle this week, when actor turned activist Laurence Fox appeared as a contributor to Gb News (where he also has a show) and slammed her using misogynist language.
Evans had angered Fox with comments earlier in the day about mental health problems not being limited to men. On Gb News, he called her “a little woman” and added “Who would want to s**g that?”
On Saturday, Evans told the Daily Mail that she intended to go to the police, after receiving a huge amount of abuse on social media, including rape threats. She said, “I do actually fear for my safety.

Updated: Another Gb News presenter has been suspended.
Calvin Robinson took to X/Twitter on Friday to write a lengthy message criticizing the UK channel for suspending Dan Wootton over his role in a misogynistic segment on Dan Wootton Tonight before quickly following up to say he had also been stepped down.
This story is moving fast and Robinson’s statement came soon after Gb News CEO Angelos Frangopoulos said Laurence Fox’s comments about journalist Ava Evans were “appalling” and offered a personal apology to her. Fox has also released a video saying he expects to be sacked today.
A Gb spokesperson confirmed that the network has suspended Robinson “pending an investigation.”
Robinson, a deacon for the evangelical Free Church of England and right-wing commentator, claimed Gb News “will be on borrowed time” if it does not support Wootton, adding: “We will all be the next in the firing line.

Ofcom has opened yet another investigation into Gb News following the Laurence Fox rant on Dan Wootton Tonight, which the regulator revealed has received 7,300 complaints.
The regulator said it is investigating under Rule 2.3 of the Broadcasting Code, which states that in applying generally accepted standards broadcasters must ensure that material which may cause offence is justified by the context.
Ofcom CEO Melanie Dawes said there had been “speculation and commentary” in recent days over Ofcom’s role in the broadcasting landscape since the Tuesday broadcast but the rules “remain unchanged.”
“They are designed to protect audiences from offensive and harmful material, and to uphold the integrity of broadcast news and current affairs programming, while always ensuring that freedom of expression is front and centre in every decision we take,” she said. “This is highly valued by audiences and central to our democracy.”

Update 8.05Am Pst: UK network Gb News has now also suspended host Dan Wootton for his part in last night’s interview in which Laurence Fox denigrated a female journalist by saying that no “self-respecting man” would “climb into bed” with her.

Ofcom has found Gb News to be in breach of due impartiality rules in a landmark ruling pertaining to an episode of Esther McVey and Phillip Davies’ show.
The regulator’s investigation concluded that an episode of Saturday Morning with Esther and Phil, which aired on Gb News on March 11, failed to “represent and give due weight to an appropriately wide range of significant views on a matter of major political controversy and current public policy.”
The right-leaning news network therefore breached rules 5.11 and 5.12 of Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code on impartiality, following 45 complaints.
This is the third time Gb News has breached Ofcom’s rules but the first regarding the controversial move to have politicians present topical shows and interview other politicians. There are six more investigations of this ilk currently open.

Four more Ofcom investigations have been opened into under-fire UK network Gb News, including the first into Laurence Fox’s show.
The regulator has just revealed it is probing a number of shows from the past few weeks that may have fallen foul of the Broadcsting Code preventing politicians from acting as newsreaders, along with various impartiality issues.
Fox’s show Laurence Fox, which was guest hosted by Martin Daubney, is being investigated over whether “due impartiality was preserved on matters of major political or industrial controversy” after it featured an interview with Reform UK leader Richard Tice on the hot-button small boats issue. Right-wing actor Fox presents a daily show talking to topical issues with his “unique and outgoing style,” according to the network, which used to be backed by Discovery.

Adil Ray has criticised Laurence Fox after the Lewis star compared insults aimed at him as an actor to Ray’s own experiences of racism.
On Sunday (10 April), the Good Morning Britain host – who has been vocal about past experiences in which he was the target of racism – responded to a news story about Essex police seizing racially offensive dolls from a pub.
The dolls, traditionally known as “golli***s”, feature a racist caricature of Black people.
Writing on Twitter, Ray commented: “I was called golliw*** at school. Just hearing the word frightens me. I can’t think of any good reason why someone on balance might think it’s ok to display them in a pub.”
In response, Fox tweeted: “Stay strong bro. I feel your pain. [Theatre critic] Quentin Letts described me as having a face that belonged in the winners enclosure at Aintree in a theatre review once, which,...

Daniel Mays has discussed the debate surrounding whether straight actors should be able to play gay roles.
The Des and White Lines actor, who played gay rights campaigner Peter Wildeblood in the BBC’s 2017 series Against the Law, said he was “shocked” by screenwriter Russell T Davies’s decision to only cast gay actors for gay roles in his groundbreaking Aids drama It’s a Sin.
“At the end of the day, you just want to play a part,” Mays told The Telegraph. “I thought It’s a Sin was an extraordinary piece of work, one of the best dramas I’ve seen in recent years.
“Russell T Davies is an exceptional writer. And it was his gig. And he was like, well, every one of these actors in it has to be gay.
“And I was really shocked at that, because I had an amazing experience playing Peter Wildeblood in Against the Law.

Billie Piper has been on quite a journey. From teenage popstar (and my first crush) through the tabloid obsession with her marriages to Chris Evans and – shudder – Laurence Fox, to her position, now, as one of Britain’s finest actors. I Hate Suzie – created by Piper along with Diary of a Call Girl collaborator, and Succession writer, Lucy Prebble – was a tremendous showcase for Piper’s ability, and it returns now for a short second season: I Hate Suzie Too. Get ready to be traumatised all over again.
Having hit rock bottom by the end of the first season, Suzie is now making a home for herself amid the pebbly detritus of her life as was. Her big comeback opportunity – personally as well as professionally – is a sub-Strictly reality TV show called DanceCrazee. But behind the make-up and glitter, leotards and legwarmers, Suzie is hanging by a thread. “How do you feel?...

Nick Hamm’s The Hole is a vivid example of how a lie can take on a life of its own. In this 2001 psychological-thriller, inspired by Guy Burt’s 1993 novel After the Hole, the truth is distorted as authorities try to understand the horrible events that happened inside an abandoned fallout shelter. The survivor of this senseless tragedy recounts those harrowing eighteen days, telling two disparate versions of the same ordeal. By the end, no one — even the storyteller herself — can tell the difference between fact and fiction.
The deception is immediate in The Hole. Hamm and screenwriters Ben Court and Caroline Ip quickly endear Thora Birch’s character Liz to audiences as the bruised and disheveled teenager stumbles her way back to her home away from home. At a private school called Brabourne, Liz enters the abandoned campus, calls for help on a payphone, then finally unleashes a guttural scream.

Spin the wheel and win some heating. This was the premise of a segment on ITV’s This Morning earlier this week. Hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby stood beside a spinwheel contraption, upon which were marked various monetary values and, on some spaces, the promise of four months’ energy bills, paid for by the programme.
The segment was using the impending energy crisis as a topical hook to spice up a routine prize giveaway, but there was something discomfortingly crass about it – made all the worse by the desperation in the phone-in contestant’s voice, his audible relief when the dial landed on “bills”. The clip was rightly condemned; words like “dystopian” have been thrown around without hyperbole. On Wednesday, the “household bills” prizes were removed from the Spin to Win competition. But while This Morning’s cost of living crisis carnival game may indeed have been a low-rent display of socio-political tone-deafness,...

Tom Hanks has said that discussions about a potential Forrest Gump sequel ended after just 40 minutes.
The actor starred in the six-time Oscar winning film as Forrest, a kind-hearted man living in Alabama in the 20th century. It is considered to be one of Hanks’ most famous roles.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hanks was asked why so few of his most famous films had been given sequels.
The actor said that, while he was intrigued by the new Bollywood remake of Forrest Gump, he didn’t have an interest in reprising any of his old characters.
“I will say that, with a long time in between, we did take a stab at talking about another Forrest Gump that lasted all of 40 minutes,” Hanks said. “And then we never- we said, ‘Guys, come on.’”

Julia Roberts has explained how George Clooney “saved” her while shooting their new film.
The Hollywood star has reunited with her Ocean’s Eleven and Money Monster co-star for a new romantic comedy, titled Ticket to Paradise.
In the film, the pair play two divorced parents who travel to Bali after learning their daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) is planning to marry a local she has just met.
Instead of supporting the marriage, they decide to work together to sabotage the wedding to prevent Lily from making the same mistake they made 25 years earlier.
The pair shot the film overseas and, in an interview with The New York Times, Roberts said it was ‘the longest I’ve ever been away from my family”.
She added: “I don’t think I’ve spent that much time by myself since I was 25.”

This Morning has dropped “energy bills” and “household bills” from the prizes on their Spin to Win game.
Presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby returned to the ITV daytime show on Monday (5 September), where they introduced a newly revamped version of the game.
Half of the prizes on offer on the wheel would see the show cover four months of energy bills for the winner, presumably a reference to the cost of living crisis and the increasing energy price caps.

Beverly Hills Cop fans are all saying the same thing about Judge Reinhold after the actor was spotted on set.
Reinhold’s career took off in 1984 after he played junior detective Billy Rosewood, alongside Eddie Murphy, in the buddy comedy film.
Reinhold went on to appear in the film’s two sequels, released in 1987 and 1994. His other credits include Gremlins (1984), Ruthless People (1986) and The Santa Clause (1996).
In the past two decades, Reinhold’s high-profile film roles have dwindled, but fans were elated when a photo of him on set of Beverly Hills Cop 4, titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, circulated on social media.
Shared by screenwriter David Stokes, the image shows Reinhold alongside co-star John Ashton, who is set to return as Sergeant John Taggart.
After the elation surrounding their return subsided, many couldn’t help but highlight that Reinhold, who is 65, now looks exactly like Mickey Rourke.

Can a person ever really be “cancelled”? I used to think not. Supposedly radioactive celebrities still manage to land lucrative Netflix specials, sell out stadiums, and win illustrious awards. But what happens when they don’t? You end up with a film like My Son Hunter.
The political satire, released today online, focuses on Hunter Biden, the son of the sitting US president. It stars Laurence Fox as Hunter, John James as Joe Biden, and Gina Carano as the narrator, a secret service agent invented for the purposes of the film. Fox, an actor whose early films include Robert Altman’s Gosford Park and Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, has become a self-professed “cancelled” person in recent years, thanks to widely criticised remarks on issues such as Covid-19, Black Lives Matter, and trans rights. Carano, a former wrestler, is also said to have been “cancelled”; her recurring stint...

Laurence Fox and Gina Carano star in an unhinged low-budget drama based less on fact and more on conspiracy theory
Writing critically about a film like My Son Hunter feels kind of like sending the kid making fart noises from the back of the class to detention. Any measure of reprimand means giving the troublemaker exactly what they want – engagement, which is to say attention, which is to say validation. When your only goal is to get a rise out of a perceived opponent, even the most cool-headed retort means the game is on.
In the case of far-right ear-flicking such as this fiction-laced retelling of the Hunter Biden laptop nothingburger, a writeup in a semi-reputable publication like the Guardian gives hyperventilating Breitbart commenters all the ammo they need to prove that the libs have been thoroughly and irrefutably triggered. The truth is that the latest feature-length output from the...

Former Star Wars star Gina Carano is set to play a secret service agent whose hair is sniffed by Joe Biden in a new biopic .
Distributed by the controversial far-right media organisation Breitbart News, the film, entitled My Son Hunter, focuses on the US President’s son, Hunter Biden, played by Laurence Fox.
Carano plays a secret service agent tasked with working in close proximity with Biden, while John James (Dynasty) plays Biden himself.
The teaser asks viewers to “witness the sensational, bombshell, unbelievable, scandalous, corrupt, censored, shocking true story” of the Bidens’ lives.
Despite this claim, the film is expected to deviate significantly from confirmed fact. My Son Hunter’s opening line, delivered by Carano’s character, reportedly disclaims: “This is not a true story, except for all the facts.”
As well as a scene in which “Joe Biden” can be seen smelling the hair of Carano’s character,...

Now that government officials have concluded Hunter Biden's laptop computer containing alleged, compromising evidence of influence-peddling, bribery and pay-for-access schemes on behalf of his father Joe Biden aka 'The Big Guy', is not 'Russian disinformation', the book "Laptop From Hell" by Miranda Devine, continues to create a buzz in the film industry, as movie producers scramble to cover the story, including the upcoming feature “My Son Hunter”, directed by Robert Davi (“Die Hard”), starring Laurence Fox, Gina Carano and John James:
"...when crack cocaine addict Hunter Biden abandoned his laptop computer at a Delaware repair shop in the spring of 2019, it became a ticking time bomb in the shadows of the Democrat presidential campaign, igniting a widespread media coverup.
"This is the story of what's inside the laptop, what China and Russia know about the Biden family and how corrupt media reporters working for foreign powers, teamed with government 'swamp' operatives and 'useful idiots',...
