Over the past few months, Netflix has been busy treating its audience to new big-budget projects, from the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen to the much-hyped 3 Body Problem and Ripley with Andrew Scott. But as high-profile as Netflix's premieres are, they seem to pale in comparison to what competing streaming services are offering.
According to numerous data and statistics, a large number of American households have recently preferred platforms such as Hulu and Max, thanks to the regular addition of acclaimed full-length new releases, or Prime Video, especially thanks to the recent hit Fallout.

Stan Lee’s favorite DC character could find a place in James Gunn’s Dcu if one director were to helm the film. In the earlier Dceu, reports suggested that Michael Bay was attached to direct a movie featuring the character Lobo. The Transformers director has a knack for creating movies that gamble with absurd characters and produce amazing results. He might be the right fit to handle this character of an intergalactic bounty hunter.
The character of Lobo could still get a solo project in James Gunn’s Dcu
Interestingly, Jason Momoa pitched a solo Lobo film to Gunn during the promotion for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Momoa became a fan of the minor Superman villain of the ’80s who became popular in the ’90s as a parody of grim and gritty characters who defined comics in that decade.

Lobo is an iconic DC character fans have been waiting eagerly for to make the jump into the live-action world. However, for years, the character has been waiting for his big break. Although Jason Momoa is now generating all the hype he can and advocating for a Lobo movie, Guy Ritchie was set to helm one back in 2010 but ultimately shelved the project in favor of directing Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Why Guy Ritchie Never Made the Lobo Movie He Was Supposed To
A Lobo live-action movie has been sitting on the shelves for ages now, and it’s wild to think how the film has jumped from one director to another over the years. Yet still, nothing has come to fruition.

Agent Argylle is coming to Apple TV+.
Matthew Vaughn’s star-studded spy caper “Argylle” will make its streaming debut on Apple TV+ on April 12, the company announced Friday.
“Argylle,” released in theaters on on February 2, undelivered during its box office opening weekend by bringing in $18 million domestically despite costing $200 million to produce. It opened with largely bad early reviews and holds a current 33% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The “Argylle” ensemble cast includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Richard E. Grant, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Sofia Boutella and Samuel L. Jackson. It follows an unlikely spy mission taken by unassuming writer Elly Conway, played by Howard. If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted spy adventure with plenty of twists and turns that will make your head spin, Argylle is set to make its streaming debut later this month. Although director Matthew Vaughn has plans for sequels, he stated that he wanted to wait and see how the first film fared. Unfortunately for Vaughn, it wouldn’t become a success at the box office, earning just $92 million worldwide on a budget of $200 million. After its low performance, the star-studded action comedy will hope to find a second life as it premieres on AppleTV+ on Friday, April 12.

Do you know the truth behind the identity of Agent Argylle? Matthew Vaughn's action rom-com for Apple starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Rockwell first debuted in theaters on February 2, 2024, but the film is already going to be available to watch at home just over a month later. Centered around a reclusive, cat-loving author named Elly Conway (Howard), the woman finds herself at the center of an espionage thriller right out of the novels she's written when a real-life spy named Aidan (Rockwell) realizes that her books reflect the actions of an actual spy organization. The film itself has been extremely polarizing, with the majority of critics disliking the picture, although /Film's own Ethan Anderton aligned with the majority of audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and liked it quite a bit!

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle seems to have spilt audiences and critics all over the world. From being branded as over-the-top fun, to the worst film of the year. While it’s neither of them, at times it can be argued that it’s fallen into each argument.
Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, an author who has written a series of best-selling spy novels, all of which focus on the heroic action hero, Argylle. We first see agent Argylle in action, played by Henry Cavill, who has, unfortunately, been given the worst haircut ever put to screen. Spurned by many critics and consumers alike, Matthew Vaughn‘s pricey spy comedy Argylle bombed at the North American box office in the biggest miss to date for Apple’s theatrical ambitions.
The movie opened to an estimated $18 million from 3,605 cinemas against a price tag of $200 million to $250 million, according to sources. The results weren’t much better overseas, where Argylle opened to an estimated $17.3 million from 78 markets, for global start of $35.3 million. The good news: Thanks to little competition, it won the weekend. Also, exhibitors were happy for an event film with A-list stars as they struggle with a dramatic downturn in product because of production delays due to the strikes.

There's something to be said for keeping a movie's marketing simple. Matthew Vaughn's new action-comedy spy thriller "Argylle" opened in theaters this week, after more than two years of Vaughn claiming that the movie was based on an upcoming novel by mysterious first-time author Elly Conway. What little buzz there was around this movie generally revolved around Henry Cavill's flat-top hairstyle, complaints about the cat CGI, and speculation that "Elly Conway" might be Taylor Swift.
Those hooks weren't able to drum up more than $6.5 million on opening day, including Thursday previews, putting "Argylle" on track for a $16.5 million opening weekend (per Deadline). That's the same amount that "The Beekeeper" made with the relatively straightforward pitch of "Jason Statham is a beekeeper who kills people with honey and also with guns."
Determining a break-even point for "Argylle" is tricky. Like Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" and Ridley Scott's "Napoleon,...

Matthew Vaughn’s action spy-comedy Argylle hopes to be an agent of change at the box office this weekend, but it could be a tough mission to complete.
The pic, whose star-packed ensemble cast is led by Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard, started off its box office tour with a subdued $1.7 million in Thursday previews. That’s not a surprise, considering the $200 million movie has been largely skewered by critics and is only expected to earn $15 million to $20 million in its domestic opening. There is certainly a potential for upside if word of mouth is strong.
Universal is distributing the pic on behalf of Apple Original Films, which is presenting Argylle in association with Marv, a Cloudy Production.
Whatever the outcome, Argylle is still welcome news for theater owners, considering the overall slowdown in product because of the lingering impact of last year’s strikes. There hasn’t been...

Chicago – “Argylle” is a nasty, smelly cinematic hairball coughed up on unsuspecting audiences. It’s a collection of half remembered clichés, atrocious writing, incoherent action, and terrible performances. A flaming dumpster fire of which only the great comic actor Catherine O’Hara emerges largely unscathed.

This article contains full spoilers for Argylle.
Early in the Matthew Vaughn spy thriller/comedy Argylle, actual secret agent Aiden (Sam Rockwell) needs to calm writer of secret agents Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). Aiden leans in and calmly tells a story about a mission that required him to scale a tremendous height. Rather than look down, Aiden explains, you just have to look at what’s ahead. “What’s right in front of you, Elly?” he asks, staring directly at the camera.
Argylle might not have the same bratty sense of humor that marked Kick-Ass or Kingsman: The Secret Service, but audiences might feel that Vaughn is trolling them in that scene. For months now, trailers for Argylle have teased an amazing twist, suggesting that the real Agent Argylle is something special, something they are not going to want to miss.
But you would have to be really inattentive to miss the reveal.

L to R: Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and John Cena in Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn
It feels as though there are one, or two, films that want to “push” against the standard movie-releasing rules as January slowly (with those recent temps it feels like crawling) gives way to February. The big splashy noisy action blockbusters are supposed to be waiting in the wings for the warmer times, but since this is from “Marv maverick” Matthew Vaughn, of course it’s not going to adhere to anyone’s rules. The guiding force behind the Kingsman and King’S Man franchises (and a pivotal entry in the X_MEN multiverse) attempts to get another series going by mixing in a bit more comedy and even a touch of romance and fantasy as he hopes we will be swept up in the world of Argylle.
And just what does the title mean?...

In June of 1970, writer Richard Matheson published the short story "Button, Button." It would inspire a radically unique cinematic adaptation as well as several other official and unofficial retellings. One of its central themes is identity. The characters discover, to their horror, that they don't know themselves, let alone those around them.
That theme is a tenet of the spy genre, and it's no surprise why the genre continues to enjoy such rampant popularity despite the Cold War (arguably the most prolific period for espionage) three decades removed. It has become nearly inextricable from the action genre (thanks in large part to James Bond), and also directly addresses the blurring of reality and fiction where cinema excels. After all, what is spycraft but another form of acting? Furthermore, if someone is called upon to pretend to be someone else for a living, it...

After all, what is spycraft but another form of acting? Furthermore, if someone is called upon to pretend to be someone else for a living, it...

A profoundly underwhelming D-level effort from mostly A- and B-level talent, director-producer Matthew Vaughn’s latest attempt at a franchise starter, Argylle, perplexes, irritates, and disappoints in almost equal measure. Nothing, not even a cast filled with trained thespians, not the dialogue credited to Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs, nor the supposed best visual effects a reported $200M budget can buy in today’s market, can save Argylle from floundering repeatedly, eventually drowning in abject mediocrity. And that’s being kind to the puzzlingly awful results onscreen, results painfully stretched out over Argylle’s excruciatingly bloated running time. It all starts semi-promisingly enough, with the title character (Henry Cavill), a Bond-inspired super-spy in man-on-a-mission mode. Argylle trails his LeGrange (Dua Lipa), a...

Sam Rockwell probably isn’t anyone’s idea of a suave secret agent, but that seems to be just the point for director Matthew Vaughn. He cast the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Oscar winner against type and let him rip with a witty, eminently watchable performance that lets him steal every scene he is in.
If only the movie, Argylle, were a star vehicle for him in the same way that, say, Hitchcock’s North by Northwest was for Cary Grant in its day, this pseudo spy thriller might have been a classic. But unfortunately too much of it, especially the final half hour of this two-hour-plus frenetic action picture, just throws it all against the wall to see what sticks. It will have your head spinning trying to keep up with a far-too-busy set of characters playing mind games with us in a twisted scenario that spins out...

What could have been a fun movie is instead self-admiring with a dull meta-narrative, phoned-in cameos and an awful lead performance
The rectangle of the screen itself seems to bend and twist into a giant self-satisfied smirk for this unbearably smug caper from director Matthew Vaughn. It has all the interest of a men’s magazine cover-shoot: thin, flimsy, lumbered with a dull meta-narrative and dodgy acting, and boasting a blank parade of phoned-in cameos from the supporting cast. Argylle is a high-concept elevator pitch stuck between floors, a piece of colourful would-be franchise content that Vaughn is tiresomely trying to fold into the extended universe of his other work.
I have in the past enjoyed this director’s raucous bad taste, and it’s not true to say that he can only direct macho guys because he got such great stuff from Chloë Grace Moretz in his superhero comedy Kick-Ass.

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle is a caper whose lack of charm prevents it from transcending the thinness of its high-concept premise. At the film’s heart is a frustrated novelist, Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), who discovers that the plots of her pulpy spy novels have inadvertently aligned with the real activities of a renegade organization led by the ruthless Ritter (Bryan Cranston). When Ritter orders Elly eliminated for threatening to expose his activities, the woman must rely on a competing spy, Aidan (Sam Rockwell), for protection.
With the anxiety-ridden, self-doubting Elly suddenly thrust into a life-or-death scenario, the film turns into a broad comedy, which Vaughn plays up with action scenes whose clear sense of movement is their only distinguishing qualities. The closest thing that he has to a visual stamp is an over-reliance on slow motion, stretching out every single stunt so that the viewer can study the grotesque,...

“You have a choice,” super spy Aiden (Sam Rockwell) tells novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). “You can either come with me and live, or you can go back and get your cat.”
It’s a hard decision for Elly to make. She loves her cat Alfie, her companion not just on lonely nights when she writes the latest entry in her hit spy novel series but also her passenger on a trip across the world, courtesy of the backpack carrier she wears throughout the film. But as Aiden points out, another wave of bad guys are on their way. And while his superhuman skills saved the day once, he doesn’t believe he can protect her through another assault.
The viewers do not share Elly’s indecision. We want her to save the cat. So ingrained in audiences is the desire for feline safety that “Save the Cat” has...

Exclusive: Matthew Vaughn reveals that last year he received what he terms “flattering” offers to sell Marv Films, the production company behind productions that include the Kick-Ass and Kingsman franchises and the Apple Original Films romance spy-thriller Argylle. That film is having its world premiere today in London, ahead of its February 2 U.S. theatrical release through Universal.
Marv is owned and controlled by Vaughn and Claudia Schiffer, his wife of 23 years. At the time, he says, “everyone was buying everything, and it was all very flattering and tempting.”
Vaughn admits he that nearly entered into a deal to sell, but his biggest mentor — whom he won’t name — cautioned him, saying, ”There’s no money in the world which would make it worthwhile for you having a boss.”
Vaughn shot back, “What do you mean?” And his friend went, ”Trust me, it will be a f*cking disaster.”

The greater the spy, the bigger the lie.
A new featurette entitled “Argylle is…?” has just been released to tie in with the latest film from the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn — Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller.
Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
Accompanied by Aidan (Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line...

Director Matthew Vaughn has debunked the rumour that Taylor Swift wrote the Argylle novel. More details here.
A few weeks ago, we dug deeper into the mysterious Argylle novel which claims to be the inspiration for Matthew Vaughn’s new film of the same name. The novel, which is described as an “explosive spy thriller”, is written by one Elly Conway.
Elly Conway is also the name of Bryce Dallas Howard’s character in Argylle the movie. She also happens to be a writer, who gets swept up in her own story which is materialising in the real world.
It seems like a pretty fun marketing gimmick, but a rumour started spreading on the internet (where else?) that the novel was actually written by Taylor Swift. I mean, someone had to have written it, so why not Taylor?
I’m sorry, Swifties, but it’s simply not true. Vaughn has now strongly denied the rumour,...

Matthew Vaughn has shut down rumours Taylor Swift secretly wrote 'Argyle'.The 52-year-old director has weighed in on the notion the 'Anti-Hero' hitmaker could be the person behind the Elly Conway pseudonym for the mysterious first time author, whose identity remains a secret. However, Vaughn told Rolling Stone magazine: "I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me — this is the power of celebrity and the internet — and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!’“And I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book!’"And I was laughing because I was like, ‘It’s not true! Matthew Vaughn, director of Argylle, is clearing things up and shutting down conspiracy theories that claim Taylor Swift wrote the book on which the film is based.
Swifties are accustomed to the “Bejeweled” singer dropping Easter eggs about her upcoming projects, and many fans believed Swift was behind the Bryce Dallas Howard-starring film. Among the Swifties convinced the pop star wrote the source material for the film was Vaughn’s daughter.

Taylor Swift is not the mysterious author behind the “Argylle” book that served as the inspiration for Apple’s upcoming spy thriller from director Matthew Vaughn. Conspiracy theories have circulated on social media for months alleging Swift is the author “Elly Conway,” a pseudonym for the writer whose manuscript was apparently so astonishing that it led to a reported $200 million deal for the film rights. Screenwriter Jason Fuchs adapted Conway’s book into Vaughn’s movie.
Elly Conway is also the main character played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Vaughn’s film, which centers on an introverted spy author who gets roped into a real life game of espionage after her books start hitting too close to a home for global crime syndicate. The identity of the real “Elly Conway” has been a mystery since “Argylle” was first announced in August 2021. The book was only recently published on Jan. 9.

The Max series Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy Here), went into production in Port Hope, Ontario earlier this year, aiming for a Halloween 2024 premiere. But, of course, the show’s progress has been slowed by the lengthy writers strike, which recently ended, and the ongoing actors strike. So the premiere is being pushed back a bit. "I don't like boring, serious films; I like entertaining escapism," filmmaker Matthew Vaughn said of his films at the New York Comic Con 2023 "Matthew Vaughn: From Kickass to Kingsman to Argylle" panel. Best known for directing genre-subverting movies like "Kingsman" (he and comic creator Mark Millar thought James Bond was getting "too serious") and "Kick-Ass", Vaughn prefers his action told with style.
While reflecting on his career since the 2007 film "Layer Cake," Vaughn reiterated his plans for "Kingsman 3" and "Kick-Ass: Reboot," with the latter starting filming next year and going a much different route than his original "Kick-Ass" film. He mentioned too that he's directing a musical that he can't talk about yet ("Elton John's catalog [referring to his producing work in 'Rocketman'] is pretty hard to beat"). He also dropped some interesting "Kingsman" trivia: Daniel Kaluuya and John Boyega were among Vaughn's top picks for Eggsy, the lead Kingsman. Though Vaughn went...

The official trailer for the fantasy spy thriller Argylle starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and John Cena has just been released.
From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn comes Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller. Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Will the real Agent Argylle please stand up?
The trailer for Apple TV+ film “Argylle,” directed by Matthew Vaughn, centers on reclusive writer Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), whose spy action hero Argylle (Henry Cavill) seemingly comes to life.
The stranger-than-fiction twist, reminiscent of “The Lost City,” leads Elly on a series of adventures with very real spies, led by Sam Rockwell, as her novel hits too close to their reality. Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson also star.
For “Barbie” fans, “Argylle” marks a reunion between fellow ensemble cast members Dua Lipa and Cena, who played the mermaid and merman dolls.
“Argylle” follows the globe-trotting adventures of super-spy Argylle across the U.S., London, and other exotic locations.
Jason Fuchs wrote the script for the Apple Original Film and Universal feature; Fuchs adapted the film from a yet-to-be-released novel. Director Vaughn,...
