Idw has set a development deal with Latin American animation studio Ánima, Variety has learned exclusively. The first project being developed under the deal is an adult animated series based on the Idw Publishing comic book series “Brutal Nature.”
Created by Luciano Saracino and Ariel Olivetti and produced by Fernando De Fuentes and José C. García de Letona alongside the Idw team, “Brutal Nature” is about a collection of masks that transforms a young man into innumerable beasts and monsters.
“We’ve always been big fans of what Ánima has been doing in the animation space, so we are thrilled with their passion for partnering on ‘Brutal Nature,’” said Paul Davidson, executive vice president of Idw Entertainment. “Their sensibilities will truly expand the amazing world that Luciano Saracino and Ariel Olivetti created.”
“Working with Idw to develop such a unique project is really exciting,” added García de Letona, who serves as COO at Ánima.

The animated feature comes from Warner Bros. Animation and DC in partnership with Anima and Chatrone.
In the time of the Aztec Empire, Yohualli Coatl — a young Aztec boy — experiences tragedy when his father and village leader, Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death.

La Llorona and El Fantasma del Convento: conceived as Mexican horror fables for Mexican audiences, these expressionist gems tap indigenous cultural riches and brooding Catholic guilt. The fable of ‘The Wailing Woman’ is told in a three-part story starting with la conquista; the spooky ‘Phantom of the Monastery’ is a moral tale cautioning against carnal sin, set in a haunted ruin. Ramón Peón, Fernando de Fuentes and Juan Bustillo Oro’s adult approach achieves a true sense of The Uncanny, mixed with powerful social statements. These are separate disc releases: one film is sourced from the only known existing print, and the other is a full-on 4K restoration from prime nitrate film elements. Indicator’s extras tap the best research available on the titles.

Alfonso Cuarón's Sólo con tu pareja (1991) is showing January 4 – February 2 and Y tu mamá también (2001) is showing January 5 – February 3, 2018 on Mubi in the United States as part of the series What Is An Auteur?: Director Double Features.Daniel Giménez Cacho’s Don Juan-esque Tomás Tomás loves women with the same unbridled fervor he hates syringes. Catching up with Alfonso Cuarón’s feature debut Sólo con tu pareja a whopping 26 years after its 1992 premiere, I was less impressed by the protagonist’s sexual escapades than the terrified look he gives nurse Silvia (Dobrina Liubomirova) as she readies him for a blood test. A diehard Casanova and beacon of heterosexual prowess reduced to a hypochondriac bundle of quivering limbs. “Pull yourself together, señor Tomás,” the girl giggles, a needle in her hand. “Will it hurt?” he mutters, terrified. “A lot.” Deemed too controversial and banned for many years in its home turf,...

Morelia — There is no doubt that anytime Alfonso Cuarón shows up at a Mexican film festival, it will be one of the highlights of the event. Today’s Masterclass, given at the Morelia Film Festival, was no exception.
In the standing-room-only Teatro Ocampo, Cuarón regaled the assemble mix of press, industry professionals from films in the official competition and local Morelia students with a conversation with one of his closest friends, and this year’s best director winner at Cannes, Pawel Pawlikowski. It was a special treat indeed to have two such visionary filmmakers discussing their craft in a mix of Cuarón’s Spanish and the “Cold War” director’s Polish-accented English.
The event kicked off with festival head Daniela Michel introducing the pair, and praising Cuarón’s “Roma” as not just one of the most important films in Mexican cinema history, but the history of the artform in general.

Quentin Tarantino is in Morelia, Mexico for the third time. Why? He's coming for the same reasons he did it back in 2010: be the curator of a film program. Tarantino landed in Morelia on Monday but it was until yesterday that things went crazy, when the director of Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained made his appearance at the principal movie theater (Cinépolis Morelia Centro) to watch the Mexican film La Zandunga (Fernando de Fuentes, 1938). It's worth noting that La Zandunga is part of the festival's program to homage actor Arturo de Córdova, for which Qt contributed with two 35mm prints from his personal collection: Frenchman's Creek and Adventures of Casanova. Ever since Morelia 2013 confirmed the surprise visit of Tarantino, many questions have...

The New York Film Festival kicked off with its first press screenings for one of two repertory series under the festival’s “Masterworks” category. Fernando de Fuentes’ El Prisonero Trece (Prisoner 13) (1933), El Compadre Mendoza (Our Buddy Mendoza) (1934) and Vamanos con Pancho Villa (Let’s Go with Pancho Villa) (1936) are a trilogy in the sense of the tone, themes and historical context that they live in, but to be clear, they are comprised of separate narratives. What they have most in common are the themes of corruption and hypocrisy, both moral and political. El Prisonero Trece focuses on Colonel Carrasco (Alfredo del Diestro). It’s a story of Carrasco vs. the revolutionaries vs. himself. There’s a lot of drinking, bumbling police, bribery, mistaken identity, unjust arrests and executions. The final act of this film unfolds far differently than you’d expect. The beginning hints at a sentimentality that was characteristic...

It’s a particularly amazing experience watching a film from the 1930s and feeling as though it’s doing things you haven’t seen before. Such is the case with Fernando de Fuentes and his acclaimed Mexican Revolution Trilogy, which will screen in succession at this year’s New York Film Festival, from Sept. 29th through 30th.
De Fuentes, now regarded by all cinephiles as a pioneer in his own right, was born in Veracruz, Mexico, studied Philosophy at Tulane University and returned to Mexico as a poet/journalist. He was nearly 40 years old when he made his first film El Anónimo. Of course, his worldliness paid off in spades. Especially when it came to putting the Mexican Revolution to celluloid. De Fuentes’ second film, El Prisionero 13, would be the first of his revolution trilogy.
