That’s not how real women look!
When it comes to depictions of women’s bodies, Hollywood and the fashion industry have long faced criticism for missing the mark. That’s why the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is teaming up with production companies Rose Pictures and Besties Make Movies on the documentary “Nothing Fits.”
Jennifer Holness, an alum of Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, is attached to direct the feature film, which will examine the impact Hollywood and fashion have had on how multiple generations of women feel about their bodies and the struggles faced by those who do not fit the industries’ standard beauty norms.
“Nothing Fits” will take a deep dive into more than a century of fashion and deconstruct how it has elevated certain female body types while leaving others behind. The documentary aims to capture the experiential connection that women feel with fashion, while...

Bob and Jeanne Berney’s Picturehouse will open Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima in theaters and direct to home (PVOD) throughout North America on Aug. 28.

Picturehouse picked up the movie in October. The movie was first scheduled for April 24 before the exhibition Covid-19 shutdown. The movie is set during the Spanish Flu, and has echoes to what’s going on now.

Exclusive: Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima, the first title to be released by Bob and Jeanne Berney’s revived Picturehouse, is going wide in 1,000 runs on Aug. 14, Deadline has learned.

STXfilms has released the official trailer for Poms, its retirement-community comedy starring Diane Keaton, Jacki Weaver, Pam Grier and Rhea Perlman. The pic, directed by Zara Hayes and written by Shane Atkinson, opens nationwide May 10, just ahead of Mother’s Day weekend.
The plot centers on Martha (Keaton), who moves into a retirement community and starts a cheerleading squad with her fellow residents. Celia Weston, Phyllis Somerville, Charli Tahan, Alisha Boe and Bruce McGill also star.
The film will hit theaters almost exactly one year after Keaton scored with Book Club, the surprise earner Paramount romantic comedy that also honed in on the senior citizen set. There are shades of that DNA in Poms, as Martha and her friends confront aging on their own terms (and after some recommended stretching). “We’re all so worried about what everyone else is thinking, but of course the only thing that really matters...

In 2017, Portugal introduced a tax incentive scheme, revamped in mid-2018 as a 25%-30% cash-rebate scheme, with a €0.5 million ($0.57 million) minimum spend for shoots.
The scheme, run by Portugal’s National Film and Audiovisual Institute (Ica) and Turismo de Portugal, has earmarked $14.4 million per year for 2019-21.
The new, more competitive terms — which include a higher rate, lower minimum spend and, critically, application during shooting — has led to a tenfold increase in applications.
Under the previous scheme there were three request to use the scheme, two of which were transferred to the new scheme, whereas in the first six months of the revamped scheme there have been 23 applications, 15 of which have already been approved, corresponding to a global production spend in Portugal of $28.5 million.
Portugal’s film commission system, overseen by Pic Portugal, is undergoing a major overhaul, including a fast-track film permit system and an online locations database.

Exclusive: Stx has won U.S. rights to comedy Poms, starring Diane Keaton, Jacki Weaver and Pam Grier, following a competitive multi-day auction. The deal is understood to be in the $8-9M range, making it the biggest deal so far at this year’s Afm.
Keaton plays a woman who moves into a retirement home and recruits the residents there to form a cheerleading squad. Zara Hayes directs. Currently in post-production, a wide theatrical release is expected next year. The three minutes of footage showing here and the acclaimed cast clearly convinced buyers of its solid grey-pound-crossover potential. MGM and Lionsgate were also understood to be in the frame for this one.
This is the second year in a row that a Keaton comedy targeted at a mature audience has fired up Afm distributors. Last year, Keaton-starrer Book Club proved to be the hot ticket in Santa Monica, selling for $10M to Paramount.

The Third Annual First Time Fest took place over the past weekend in New York City, from March 5th to March 9th. The festival, which celebrates first time filmmakers, had numerous panels that discussed topics such as financing films to getting the right marketing for the film to even talks from established filmmakers sharing their advice. The festival concluded with the honoring of Harvey Weinstein, as a tribute for “his support of first time filmmakers.”
A purely New York City centric film festival, the festival’s founders of Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward chose to show the films at the Core Club, the Village East Cinema, and the Wild Project, while the discussions and panels were featured at the B Bar and Grill. The festival allows for a five day competition among films that were completed by first time filmmakers for the chance to win international sales and theatrical distribution.
