Prepare yourselves, Jane Austen fans, because Gill Hornby’s novel “Miss Austen” is being developed as a four-hour miniseries for television by PBS’ “Masterpiece” and Christine Langan through Bonnie Productions. Andrew Gibb is writing the adaptation.
“Miss Austen” is Hornby’s third novel and revolves around the lives and loves of Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. It delves into why Cassandra burned a treasure trove of letters written by her sister, Jane — an act of destruction that has troubled academics and Austen fans for centuries.
“‘Miss Austen’ is about one of the most important people in Jane Austen’s life, her sister Cassandra,” “Masterpiece” executive producer Susanne Simpson said. “We can’t wait to bring Gill Hornby’s captivating novel to life for our ‘Masterpiece’ audience.”

His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

Maud (Glenda Jackson) can’t trust her own mind to be honest with her, and its rapid deterioration isn’t just frustrating; it’s downright infuriating.
At first, she’s able to keep her head in one piece by stuffing her pockets with scribbled notes. Soon enough, though, they become reminders of the fact that she can’t remember much of anything at all. As her dementia worsens, Maud gets lost in the wilds of her memories. Her perspective shifts with such alarming elasticity that it becomes more and more difficult — for her and the viewer both — to understand what’s happening to her and what’s already happened.
“Elizabeth Is Missing,” a bracing movie that aired Jan. 3 in the U.S. on PBS Masterpiece, initially frames itself as a pair of parallel whodunits. In the present day, Maud is trying to track down her friend Elizabeth (Maggie Steed), who seems to have disappeared.

Oscar-winner Glenda Jackson, who picked up Academy Awards for 1971’s Women In Love and 1974’s A Touch Of Class, returns to the screen for the first time in 25 years in BBC drama Elizabeth Is Missing.
The actor, who swapped film and TV for politics in 1992 when she became a Labour MP, was persuaded back to screen by Aisling Walsh after the Maudie director signed up to helm the 90-minute drama adaptation of Emma Healey’s dementia mystery.
Walsh told Deadline, “I thought of Glenda immediately when I read the script and knew she was no longer an MP and had seen her in King Lear and wondered if this was something she might fancy doing. We got in touch, I went to New York to meet her and we had a chance to talk about it. If you’re lucky you get the actor you first thought of.”

Daphne, Glory also scoop prizes.
Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country has won the top prize at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The well-received drama, which premiered in Sundance and had its UK premiere in Edinburgh, took the Michael Powell Award for best British feature film.
The prize was awarded by a jury consisting of composer David Arnold, International Film Festival Rotterdam artistic director Bero Beyer, and Bafta-nominated film and television writer Andrea Gibb.
The jury commented: “We present the Michael Powell Award to God’s Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, a film with a singularity of storytelling and consistency of vision. Assured direction with raw and endearing performances result in a film that has an authenticity that is both tender and brutal, a juxtaposition of landscape and emotion, which explores the question of what it means to be a man.”

To celebrate the release of Philippa Lowthorpe’s adaptation of Swallows and Amazons on Blu-ray and DVD we are privileged to have an inside view on the film’s production.
In this guest editorial screenwriter Andrea Gibb takes us on her journey bringing the beloved book to the big screen.
I first got involved with ‘Swallows and Amazons’ in 2007. Nick Barton, one of the producers, had seen my film ‘Dear Frankie’ and liked it. That had a child at the centre and, as the most important characters in ‘Swallows’ are the kids, Nick felt I could write them for the screen.
I hadn’t read the book as a child but the minute he gave it to me, I fell in love. I was struck by its power as an evocation of childhood and by the simple truth of its message; children love to play, explore and imagine.

Behold a time before helicopter parenting, when children roamed free, ate cake for dinner, and played with fire. A delightfully old-fashioned treat. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Gather round, kiddies, and behold a time before videogames — before television, even — when children roamed free and were forced to relieve their boredom with nothing more than a couple of sticks and their imaginations… and they relished it. Gather round, parents, and marvel as a mother grants permission for her four children to go sailing and camping on their own recognizance, with no adult supervision at all, for days. Because, as that mother says, “I don’t want them frightened of the world,” so they have to learn how to deal with it on their own. Imagine that!

Emma Healey's bestselling novel Elizabeth Is Missing will be made into a three-part series by Stv Productions.
Healey's 2014 debut novel will have a script developed by writer Andrea Gibb (BBC Films' Swallows and Amazons and Music and Silence).
Elizabeth Is Missing tells the story of Maud and her quest to find her missing best friend while battling with dementia.
"Elizabeth Is Missing is a dramatist's dream," said Gibbs.
"It has everything; a great premise, a compelling mystery, an unusual and engaging heroine and is both funny and very moving."
She added: "It is also about something very important. Dementia is a time bomb. According to the Alzheimer's Society, two thirds of people with dementia are women and by 2021 there will be a million people with it in the UK.
"It's not an inevitable disease of old age but a disease of the brain which affects not just the person...

Grey's Anatomy star Kevin McKidd has been pining for his native Scotland since moving to America, so the actor plans to return to his homeland soon to shoot three movies.
The Scottish actor has been based in Los Angeles with his wife Jane and their two children since he landed a role as Dr. Owen Hunt in the medical drama in 2008.
But he feels increasingly homesick, and is planning to head back to Scotland soon to helm three projects after he fell in love with directing while taking charge of an episode of Grey's Anatomy earlier this year.
McKidd tells the Daily Record newspaper, "I'm hoping to do a low budget film for Sigma Films with (Scottish screenwriter/actress) Andrea Gibb, who I did (2003 film) Afterlife with and who had written an amazing script - like (1983 American drama) The Big Chill but set in Scotland. And (Scottish rocker/filmmaker) Richard Jobson is also trying to get a project off the ground that would be shooting in Grampian, so hopefully they can both come off.
"I'd love to come back to direct some kind of independent film. I'm not sure what that would be yet but I definitely want to do that. Next year there's a Shakespeare play in Scotland I'm working to get made as a movie."
McKidd has also hinted he is eyeing a future behind the camera because his directorial debut for Grey's Anatomy was such a hit, producers have invited him to helm more episodes.
He adds, "I think I did a good job and I was delighted to get the opportunity. They have also asked me back to direct a couple of episodes in season eight, which starts later this year."...
