Bryan Cranston was one of many high-profile actors to hit the picket line in New York City on Tuesday, speaking at the SAG-AFTRA’s Rock the City for a Fair Contract rally.
The “Breaking Bad” star delivered a defiant speech, calling out Disney CEO Bob Iger in his comments addressing the union’s refusal to be replaced by AI.
“I know, sir, that you look through things through a different lens,” Cranston told the crowd.

“We don’t expect you to understand who we are but we are asking you to hear us, and beyond that to listen to us when we tell you we will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots,” he continued.
“We will not have you take away our right to work and earn a decent living,” Cranston declared.

It’s Day 12 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 85 of the WGA strike.
With enough famous actors to populate an awards show all gathered on one stage, the labor union representing them in an “existential battle” against film and television studios held a star-studded strike rally in the middle of New York’s Times Square on Tuesday morning.
An audience of several hundred people including card-waving members of SAG-AFTRA squeezed into a barricaded pedestrian plaza on a humid day when at least one spectator required medical attention. At an event dubbed “Rock the City for a Fair Contract,” they heard almost two hours worth of speeches from union representatives and from high-profile acting peers including Bryan Cranston, Christine Baranski, Wendell Pierce, Christian Slater, Stephen Lang, Michelle Hurd, Jill Hennessy and Steve Buscemi.

As SAG-AFTRA members swarmed the streets of Times Square Tuesday morning raising #Sagaftrastrong signs, lifting their guild member cards, and chanting for a fairer contract, Bryan Cranston, Steve Buscemi, and The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas stood alongside them in solidarity. “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” star Christine Baranski joined SAG-AFTRA’s “Rock the City for a Fair Contract” in Times Square on Monday on behalf of her series co-stars and colleagues.
Baranski started by noting that she was speaking “personally” on her experience as “a working actor” as well as for the guest and background actors she has worked with over the years. For 13 years, Baranski has played a lawyer on two shows, one on CBS (“The Good Wife”) and one on a streaming service (“The Good Fight”) — first CBS All Access and then Paramount+. Concerns having to do with streaming residuals are a central sticking point for the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“On both shows, I consider these actors my colleagues and part of our creative family. Their contribution to the series’ success was indispensable, and I am here today speaking on their behalf,” Baranski said.
“We will not live under corporate feudalism.

The absence of women among director nominees for the Golden Globes is another example of how much work remains to be done to achieve gender parity in the entertainment industry, honorees said Tuesday night at the 40th annual Muse Awards presented by New York Women in Film and Television.
“Harriet” director Kasi Lemmons, “The Irishman” producer Jane Rosenthal and “The Handmaid’s Tale” star Ann Dowd shared their thoughts about the helming snub as the three were feted for their work.
Upon receiving Nywift’s first-ever and only Career Impact Achievement Award, Rosenthal, the longtime business partner of Robert De Niro, told the crowd, “It’s wonderful to be acknowledged, but you don’t manifest justice or impact with an award. We create impact when we commit to doing something. We must also commit to supporting each other to promote and produce underrepresented voices.”

Producers and correspondents for the venerable “CBS Sunday Morning” took some time Thursday night at the Paley Center for Media to explain how the program comes together each week.
Martha Teichner, David Pogue, Nancy Giles and Conor Knighton took to the Paley stage along with producer Jay Kernis and executive producer Rand Morrison. They were joined by correspondent Mo Rocca, who used a mobile connection from what appeared to be a Washington, D.C. locale to beam his thoughts to the audience. “‘Sunday Morning’ is the kind of place where you can do something on someone who isn’t super famous but is super interesting,” he said.
Rocca said he is often approached by loyal viewers who tell him the program “is church for us” because of its attention to subjects that often don’t get coverage on cable-news networks or evening newscasts.

CBS Sunday Morning's Nancy Giles and "Race Forward" radio host/critic/commentator Jay Smooth were guests on All In with Chris Hayes on MSNBC recently, talking about Starbucks's new Race Together initiative. And things got a little awkward.
At one point, Giles semi-playfully accused Smooth of trying to "code switch," or alter his speaking style when he spoke to hip-hop fans.
"I can't not tease Jay about the kinda like brotha way he was trying to talk, like, 'Hey,' with the rap music in the background, and like down with the people," Giles said.

Unfortunately, we doubt a venti iced latte would help to quell the tension. A cringe-worthy moment ensued on Tuesday's All in With Chris Hayes when CBS Sunday Morning's Nancy Giles and culture commentator and DJ Jay Smooth were discussing race relations in context with the rampant criticism over Starbucks' #RaceTogether campaign. The two made a number of valid points during their discussion (Smooth said Howard Schultz's "intensions seem noble" but is concerned whether the tough topic "can be addressed by having chats in coffee shops") but it was about five minutes into their chat when things got really awkward after an accidental stereotype was tossed around,...

In a Screen Actors Guild election that was widely considered a referendum on merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, proponents of that idea emerged with a clear mandate. When the results of SAG's 2010 national board of directors election were announced Sept. 23, MembershipFirst, the SAG faction that emerged from the group of actors who helped scuttle merger in 2003, lost the fight for all 13 Hollywood-based national seats up for grabs to its rival faction, the pro-merger Unite for Strength. MembershipFirst partisans had held all 13 of those seats. The loss hands the coalition of Hollywood, New York, and regional moderates who had held a slim majority of the national seats—and who have been vocal in support of merger—a commanding boardroom advantage.Even more striking is MembershipFirst's loss of its majority on the Hollywood board. Unite for Strength won an overwhelming 33 of 35 open seats. Ufs, formed in...

Because each worker, regardless of their field, deserves the freedom to bargain for a contract, for a better life. Slumdog Millionaire continued its winning streak this awards season, with Simon Beaufoy winning the 2009 Writers Guild of America award this evening for adapted screenplay. Dustin Lance Black won the award for best original screenplay for Milk. Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Milk has won SAG and PGA awards and is also a strong Oscar contender in multiple categories.
On the television side, awards went to the writers of Mad Men (drama), 30 Rock (comedy), Recount and John Adams in long-form categories, and In Treatment, Breaking Bad, and The Simpsons in various other fields. Controversially, among other awards was one for videogame writing (to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). Some publishers declined to submit their titles for consideration, viewing the award as primarily an organizing tool for a guild seeking to gain a foothold in a non-unionized sector.
