Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.
Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.
Foreman’s life was quite a story.
We can’t say the same for the film.
Movie Review
Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.
Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.
It is well executed technically, it knows how to behave, but the script’s compassionate...

Across a career that spanned four decades and saw him earn two heavyweight titles and a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, George Foreman cemented his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time. But despite having one of the most remarkable stories in sporting history to work with, Big George Foreman manages to stumble sluggishly from one chapter in his life to the next in a way that’s neither insightful nor entertaining.
George Tillman Jr.’s film plays out largely as a by-the-numbers biopic, charting Foreman’s rise from a troubled Texas youth to a title-winning boxer, then a born-again preacher, then a title-winning boxer again. Khris Davis, previously seen testing out his pugilistic skills on poor Donald Glover in Atlanta, plays Big George from the end of his teenage years to his remarkable comeback as the world’s oldest-ever heavyweight champion at the age of 45.

So often thought of primarily as the big lug who was so dramatically dispatched by Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire in 1974, George Foreman is the main event in Big George Foreman. While there is plenty of boxing here to satisfy sports fans, the film is mild-mannered and genial to a fault as it charts the life of a dirt-poor Texas kid with a devastating punch whose public image transformed over the years from hulking bogeyman to that of a good-natured businessman and man of God.
Ali was such a commanding, entertaining and (mostly) adored worldwide figure, from his emergence as the self-anointed “greatest” to his ultimate status as one of the most beloved and admired men on the planet, that it isn’t easy to watch him take a back seat here to a younger but less charismatic figure onscreen. Boxing movies tend to be pretty great fodder for a harrowing feel-good story. Even people who don't give a damn about boxing otherwise would be hard-pressed not to cheer by the end of "Rocky" or "Cinderella Man." Sure, there is the occasional dark boxing tale, such as "Raging Bull," that makes for equally -- if not more -- compelling cinema. Today though brings us what appears to be an underdog story, and a familiar one for many fans of the sport, as the trailer for "Big George Foreman" is here. Or, to be more specific regarding the title, "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World." And yes, they did put all of that on the poster.
In any case, this is the tale of George Foreman and, more specifically, his wildly unlikely comeback story as a boxer advanced in his years.

The official trailer has dropped for the George Foreman biopic, titled “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World,” from director George Tillman Jr. It explores the life of the legendary boxer turned minister. Forest Whitaker portrays Doc Broadus, the boxer’s longtime trainer who introduced him to the sport, while Khris Davis will portray Foreman. Sullivan Jones will play Muhammad Ali, as the two boxers had iconic bouts during their careers, including the Rumble in the Jungle match in Zaire.
The biopic will follow Foreman’s boxing career highlights, including when he obtained Olympic Gold at the 1968 Mexico City Games and his world heavyweight champion run. Outside of his boxing career, the narrative will cover Foreman finding his faith, retiring and becoming a preacher. Finally, it will document his return to the ring at the age of 45 when his family and church faces financial hardship.

As Warner Bros attempts to shake up their whole content creation with DC films, only some schedule shifts are happening with Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. One of their biggest moves is pushing the Adam Driver sci-fi actioner, 65, back to the same weekend as Shazam: Fury of the Gods. The studio has faith that the movie will be able to compete with the DC superhero and gets pushed back so the latest Scream film can perform as best as can.
The plot synopsis for 65 reads, “After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Driver) quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth…65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive. Sam Raimi produces. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote A Quiet Place.

The Sony Adam Driver sci-fi movie 65 is moving onto the opening weekend of New Line’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods, March 17-19. The Scott Beck-Bryan Woods movie was previously dated for March 10, 2023.
The studio, I hear, has a confidence in the movie, and it’s to give the pic some air from the next Scream sequel on March 10. No rating yet for 65.
In addition the studio is movie its Affirm release of the George Foreman Biopic from March 31 next yera to April 28. "The Wire" co-creator David Simon often compares the show to a modern Greek tragedy, going so far as to reimagine mythic Gods moved into intractable American institutions. Capitalism, drug dealing, policing, politics, education, and the media are all examined in great detail, giving you a full picture of why the characters are helpless, and fundamentally incapable of changing anything beyond, maybe, their personal situations.
The series is set in Baltimore, which occasionally gave it some difficulties due to the bleak urban picture it painted, but as co-creator Ed Burns said, "we could've taken that show into any city." Burns and Simon just had decades of life and experience in Baltimore from which to draw.
"The Wire" began with a narrow focus that gradually expanded to dig into Baltimore's nooks and crannies. The show's first season mostly focuses on the plights of both the Barksdale criminal organization and the Baltimore P.

This article contains spoilers for every season of The Walking Dead.
When a black and white comic book series titled The Walking Dead premiered among Image Comics’ monthly offerings in 2003, few would have guessed that it would spawn the multimedia franchise we know it as today. As one among many works that capitalized in a cultural resurgence in the zombie subgenre in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, The Walking Dead might have been a flash in the pan were it not for its world-building and revolving ensemble cast, which allowed for it to go mainstream with AMC’s 2010 TV adaptation.
The main series will have clocked in at 177 episodes by its Nov. 20, 2022 conclusion, making it one of the most prominent TV sagas of the modern era. Even here in the eleventh hour of the eleventh season, there are bound to be many excellent episodes on the way before all is said and done.

When you think of HBO's classic mid-'00s series "The Wire," it's the characters that come to mind first -- people like McNulty (Dominic West), D'Angelo, Kima (Sonja Sohn), or Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). All of them have their place in the show's vast tapestry, but their stories never feel manufactured or inauthentic. Their major failures and small triumphs echo and clash against those of others, comprising the major drama of the show. And Stringer, the ambitious climber at the top of the show's Barksdale criminal empire, had some of the show's most engaging material. Of course, it helped that he was played by a future movie star.
While you can now see him on the big screen fighting monstrous lions in "Beast" or playing a romantic Djinn in a George Miller film, Idris Elba's work in "The Wire" some 20 years earlier was much more low-key. Stringer is nothing like the typical fantasy gangster.

I’d recently been absorbed in the deep colors and heartache of Douglas Sirk's melodramas, following on from this I found myself pining for more white picket fence drama, but with a twist. This is where John Waters came back into my world, how I had missed him, so this edition of Notebooks Soundtrack Mix is a sonic ode to a pioneer of perversion. I started back with Polyester (1981) and Serial Mom (1994), which, alongside Gus Van Sant's 1995 To Die For is a double bill I’m always dreaming of. The work of John Waters ramps up the technicolor dreams of Sirk and places them in a camp world of dysfunctional misfits. His work is a reminder to not take things so seriously and that there is a place for everyone in this world which, importantly, includes the poor, repugnant and nasty! Waters is famous for his use of...

World-building is a topic that tends to come up with science-fiction sagas or fantasy epics, but “The Deuce” is one of the most impressive examples in recent memory. Not only did the HBO drama immediately immerse audiences in a historical facsimile of 42nd Street, Manhattan, with XXX theaters and denizens of the night aplenty, but creators David Simon and George Pelecanos, alongside their producing partner Nina Noble and a top-notch crew lead by production designer Scott Dougan, replicated the so-called Deuce’s transformation over three separate time periods: first in 1971, then in the high-end porn days of 1977, and finally in the turbulent ’80s, specifically 1985, as the neighborhood is about to be transformed.
In terms of sheer artistic value, these touches can’t be praised highly enough. “The Deuce” isn’t breaking the budget, compared to other Home Box Office hits, but it’s a stunning, transportive experience each and every episode.

Midway through The Deuce season 3’s first episode, “The Camera Loves You,” former Times Square streetwalker turned arthouse porn director Eileen “Candy” Merrell (Maggie Gyllenhaal) attends the 1985 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
She and producing partner Harvey Wasserman (David Krumholtz) are there to hock their wares - stylish, slick, and largely feature-length pornography. As they sit behind their ill-attended booth, Candy and Harvey see two men wearing all black along with matching black pimp hats march in with a cadre of onlookers surrounding them.
“Who the fuck are they?” Candy asks, of the men gracelessly appropriating the world she used to live in.
“The Dark Brothers,” Harvey says. “They made a film Let Me Tell Ya ‘Bout White Chicks. It’s just a bunch...

HBO released the trailer for its eight-episode third and final season of David Simon’s porn drama, “The Deuce” on Thursday.
Welcome to 1985. Here’s what’s going down this decade:
Season 3 of “The Deuce” brings us into the world of 1985, just as VHS overtakes film as the primary medium for porn production and distribution. The lure of the California sunshine, the city’s aggressive takeover of commercial sex properties in Times Square and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic mark the end of an era. With the party of the 1970s winding down, 42nd Street has deteriorated into a hive of uncontrolled violent crime and seedy video stores, making urban renewal seem more unlikely than ever before. Following the interconnected lives of Times Square’s barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police, mobsters, porn actors and producers, the eight-episode third season of “The Deuce” brings the series’ arc to a dramatic conclusion.

"You elect a deranged con-man, just to see what happens...!" Freestyle Releasing has debuted another new official Us trailer for the indie satire Hot Air, which hasn't played at any film festivals or elsewhere yet. Hot Air is a timely drama (or satire?) relevant to today's world about a popular right-wing radio host named Lionel Macomb, as played by Steve Coogan. His life takes a sudden turn when his 16 year old niece Tess, played by Taylor Russell, comes crashing into his life. She confronts him and challenges him and makes him question his own position and his own legacy. The cast includes Neve Campbell, Pico Alexander, Skylar Astin, Judith Light, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Griffin Newman, and Judah Friedlander. We posted the first UK trailer for this last month, and they've cut a new Us trailer that's definitely trying to rile everyone up. And it's very obviously calling out some bullshit.

"The American Dream is dead and buried!" Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Hot Air, which hasn't played at any film festivals or elsewhere yet. This actually looks like it might be pretty good, a fine attempt at dealing with these kind of media overlords and their insane egoes. But sadly I don't think this would ever truly happen in real life at all,...

Simon and Pelecanos then went on to have a fruitful relationship with HBO, creating shows and limited series like Treme, Generation Kill, and Show Me A Hero. The first episode of “The Deuce” Season 2 revolves around a chase, but given this is still a David Simon show, said chase is more of a casual stroll: Frankie, one of the Martino twins played by James Franco, has made away with a week’s worth of earnings from the peep show he kinda, sorta manages, and it’s up to his more responsible brother, Vinnie, to find him and get the money back. His search leads him through the relaxed dive bars, pulsing disco clubs, and seedy underworld of the Manhattan district known as The Deuce, and oh what a captivating adventure it remains.
Written by co-creators Simon and George Pelecanos, the construct is a savvy way to reintroduce characters after a six-year time jump to 1977. There’s Abby Parker (Margarita Levieva), who’s still bartending at Vinnie’s main gin joint while pursuing more active ways to support...

Times Square, 1971: The sleaziest cesspool in New York City is about to get sleazier. All around 42nd Street – known as "the Deuce" – the streets are full of pimps and hookers, XXX theaters and drug dealers, cops and johns and gangsters. The obscenity laws are relaxing, opening the way for the porn business to expand into the mainstream – massage parlors, private booths, sex shops. The cops let it all happen, as long as they keep getting their cut of the money. Everybody here is a tough crowd, because everybody's got a tough story.

Summer TV might not be the endless field of tumbleweeds the landscape used to be a few years ago. But there’s still something about fall approaching that signals a revitalized TV world, filled with plenty of new shows and returning favorites.
We’ll have more soon on the best of what’s to come among the fall’s returning shows, but here’s a helpful overview of the new series that might be worth adding to the queue.
“American Horror Story: Cult” (September 5, FX)
This newest installment of the long-running FX anthology series may not be a new show, but it’s dealing with some new subject matter. (Aotn) Taking us back to the gritty 1970’s New York City, a time when sex and drugs ran rampant and the porn industry went from being a back-alley, brown-paper-bag commodity to a billion-dollar universal in American life. There was a moment when ground zero for the earliest pioneers in the flesh trade was the midtown heart of the nation’s largest city, New York’s Times Square. HBO’s new eight episode series “The Deuce” starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal provides us with a look at this time of both sexual and cultural awakening.
Taking a page out of the “Fargo” playbook, Franco will portray two rival twin brothers who eventually became Mob fronts for the Gambino family in midtown, rising to some prominence in their own right. Those tales – provided by a brother who passed away a few brief months before “The Deuce” began filming its pilot – form...

What’s better than a 1970s HBO porn drama with James Franco? A 1970s HBO porn drama with two James Francos! And you get to see — and hear — the actor pull double duty in a recently released new teaser trailer for The Deuce.
Franco plays Vincent and Frankie Martino, New York City-based twins who are (seemingly happily) embroiled in some of vintage Times Square’s less-than-legal pursuits: gambling and porn. We also are introduced to Maggie Gyllenhaal, a prostitute named Eileen “Candy” Merrell; at one point, Candy proudly tells another of her street sisters that she doesn’t have a pimp “man.

James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal become entrepreneurs in seedy 1970s New York City in the debut teaser for HBO series The Deuce.
Franco takes on dual roles as shaggy-haired twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, a gambler and bartender who become fronts for the mob in Times Square. Gyllenhaal plays Eileen "Candy" Merrell, an independent sex worker who transitions into the booming porn industry.
The clip showcases the sordid atmosphere of the era, teasing gunfire, violent police altercations, sex, nightclub boozing and a marquee promoting the premiere of 1972 "Golden Age" porn flick Deep Throat.
