How much baggage does The Boys in the Band, Mart Crowley’s 50-year-old groundbreaker, tote onto its first-ever Broadway stage? How many memories of early Off Broadway notoriety, dismissive reappraisals and late-in-the-day charges of antiquated self-loathing?
Oh Mary, don’t ask.
Or actually, do. Because director Joe Mantello, a production team that includes Ryan Murphy and Scott Rudin, and a cast led by the full-of-surprises Jim Parsons as well as Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer, have revived and revitalized a play that for all its imperfections throws a party at the Booth Theatre that shouldn’t be missed.
And not just as some musty, the-way-we-were study guide. After all the lacerating barbs – what shocks most today might be the depiction of horrendously casual racism – we’re reminded that Crowley wrote a fierce and funny drama about the damage done when society’s hate works its way into the souls of its outcasts.

Where do you go after winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes for your first short film? For director/editor David Greenspan, who became the first USC student film to win the Palme d’Or for short films at the 54th Cannes Film Festival (with his graduate thesis film "Bean Cake"), the path to getting his feature film debut out into the world has been circuitous. Though his first feature film, a dark comedy called "51/50 Mall Cop," starring Kathleen Robertson, premiered in competition at the 2005 Slamdance festival, it's only now available on digital platforms. Below Greenspan details in 10 not-so-easy steps how he made the film and finally got it seen. Step 1 Go to film school. Make a thesis film. Win a Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at Cannes with thesis film. Step 2 Have a producer who saw thesis film at Cannes approach you and ask if you have any scripts.

If you’re ever curious to get inside the head of a theater performer, “Process in Performance” is a place to go. The monthly Monday night interview series, started by actor Nick Westrate, creates a dialogue between theater artists in order to deepen understanding of one another’s work and shed light on the process. The series, a part of the New York Theatre Workshop’s Larson Lab, has featured the likes of Ellen Lauren (“Freshwater”), David Greenspan (“Go Back to Where You Are”), Elizabeth Marvel (“True Grit,” “Burn After Reading”) and a founding member of The Wooster Group, Kate Valk. After graduating from Juilliard’s drama program, Westrate joined Nytw, performing in last season’s production of Lillian Hellman’s “The Little Foxes,” directed by Ivo van Hove. For Westrate, the non-traditional production and his interest in the type of work that “wasn’t strained by realistic parameters” was...

Oh, to catch Bud Greenspan's eye and then turn up in one of his Olympic documentaries. For many athletes, from the famous to the obscure, the honor ranked just behind winning a medal.
The filmmaker, whose riveting tales soared as triumphantly as the men and women he chronicled for more than six decades, died Saturday at his home in New York City of complications from Parkinson's disease, companion Nancy Beffa said. He was 84.
"Bud was a storyteller first and foremost. He never lost his sense of wonder and he never wavered in the stories he wanted to tell, nor how he told them," she said through a family friend. "No schmalzy music, no fog machines, none of that. He wanted to show why athletes endured what they did and how they accomplished what so few people ever do."

The 17th annual Slamdance Film Festival is all set to run for eight days and nights Jan. 21-27. The festival is featuring a bold theme this year of “All Is Not Lost” where — due to the current devastating economic climate — Slamdance will donate 10% of ticket proceeds back to the filmmakers.
The fest is screening 14 feature films — 10 of which are in competition — and 8 feature documentaries, all of which are in competition. In addition, there will be 56 short films screening.
Plus, there are a couple of special screenings, including the Straight 8 event where anybody can register to receive a single roll of Super-8 film that they can use to direct their own in-camera edited mini-masterpiece. Also, on the 26th, there will be a special retrospective of the works of renegade ’60s filmmaker J.X. Williams.
The full film lineup is below, but for more information on the site please visit the official Slamdance website.

She Stoops to Comedy by David Greenspan, Directed by Mark Rucker She Stoops to Comedy is an examination and deconstruction of theatrical convention, even the script of She Stoops to Comedy - and, thus, the very lives of the characters in it - is completely a work in progress, open to reinvention, reinterpretation, and even rewriting at the slightest whim.

Neil Gaiman’s works are no stranger to multiple mediums. With his stories onscreen (”Stardust,” “MirrorMask”) as well as onstage (”Mr. Punch,” “The Wolves In the Walls”) it only seems natural that “Coraline,” the author’s award-winning children’s book (as well as graphic novel, 3D animated film and video game) has been joined by a musical incarnation.
Playing now through June 20 at McC’s Lucille Lortel Theatre, the musical features lyrics and music by Stephin Merritt (”The Magnetic Fields”), with a book by David Greenspan. Leigh Silverman is directing and Jayne Houdyshell (”Wicked”) stars as the reality-hopping Coraline.
In an interview with BlackBook Merritt explained how his relationship with Gaiman culminated in a fully realized production.
“I asked other people to come on board. I got the rights from [Gaiman]. I was already friends with Neil when ‘Coraline’ was written,” said Merrit. “He asked me to do the music for the audiobook.

One of the more successful graphic novel to film adaptations in recent memory was most definitely Coraline, and we received word that just last week it premiered on stage in (where else?) New York City.
Coraline is running from May 8th to June 20th, 2009, at the McC Theater at The Lucille Lortel Theatre, 121 Christopher Street in New York. Here's a synopsis from the McC: A musical like no other, Coraline sprang from the minds of three of the most wildly popular cult figures of our time. Adapted from the terrifying children’s book by Neil Gaiman, this tale of menace and mayhem is set to music and lyrics by smart-rock iconoclast Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields (pictured) and boasts a book by celebrated downtown actor/playwright David Greenspan, who serves double-duty as the villainous Other Mother. Tony nominee Jayne Houdyshell stars in the title role, and bringing it all...

Like their counterparts nationwide, the ethnically specific theatres of the San Francisco Bay Area are trying to ride out the economic downturn. But such theatres also face special challenges: to stage work that "serves as a bridge to other cultures," as Traveling Jewish Theatre artistic director Aaron Davidman puts it; to find enough actors of the appropriate ethnicity; and to cultivate diverse audiences. While more-mainstream theatres may grapple with the same issues, for companies dedicated to exploring a particular culture and working largely with artists from that culture, they're ever-present. The culturally and aesthetically diverse Bay Area theatre scene is also well-known for its spirit of cooperation -- fostered in large part by the local service organization Theatre Bay Area -- and some theatres co-produce with other companies regularly, sharing costs, talent, and audiences. The area's growing number of ethnic theatres ranges from midsize companies that produce a full season...

Not content with having a Newbury Award, the the top-debuting, wide-release, stop-motion film in movie history, and throngs of adoring fans dressed in black, now Neil Gaiman is trying for a Obie Award.
Coraline the musical goes into previews on May 7 at the Lucille Lortel Theater, off-Broadway in Greenwich Village, where it will run through June 20. The book is by David Greenspan and music and lyrics by Stephin Merritt, and directed by Leigh Silverman.
Casting will be-- unconventional, to say the least. 9-year-old Coraline will be played by 55-year-old actress Jayne Houdyshell, with the Other Mother played by David Greenspan. (Cross-dressing in Greenwich Village? That never happens...)...
