Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.
When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”
She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”
The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to The Lost King ahead of its debut at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film reunites the team behind 2013’s Philomena — Stephen Frears, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope — for a comedy-drama based on a true story about Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, and the historian who helped uncover the remains of King Richard III, lost for more than 500 years, beneath a carpark in the English city of Leicester.
The discovery, in 2012, was the culmination of years of obsessive research by Langley, who faced the incomprehension of friends and family and the derision of experts and academics, and whose role was largely overlooked. Coogan will play Langley’s husband and Frears will direct from a script co-written by Coogan and Pope.

IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Stephen Frears’ drama The Lost King, starring Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Steve Coogan (The Trip), ahead of its world premiere at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
The film reuniting Frears with writers Coogan and Jeff Pope—who adapted the script for his 2013 dramedy Philomena—tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Hawkins), who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. IFC Films nabbed North American rights to “The Lost King,” which will have its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Stephen Frears, the feel-good true story stars Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley, an amateur historian who uncovered the remains of King Richard the III after they had been lost for 500 years. Fireworks is a charming indie comedy about a teenage girl, Kat, who runs away from home to find her uncle Gillies, who she has secretly discovered is her real dad. But Gillies, played by the fantastic Ewen Bremner, turns out to have bipolar disorder. Without fully understanding this, Kat hatches a plan for them to make a homemade firework, with Gillies' medication as the essential ingredient.
The Fireworks production team are now looking for a talented, bold, headstrong young woman to play the lead role of Kat.
Our bright new star doesn’t need any acting experience, but she does need to be bold, funny and brave. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
The ideal candidate will be a young-looking sixteen year old with a London accent, but we are prepared to be blown away by any fresh new star who can play a 13-14 year old London girl.

Having arrived from Glasgow the night before, and fresh from an early morning cast and crew screening of his latest movie, John McKay was set for a day of interviews when we met him in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
The film in question, Not Another Happy Ending, was due to close the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival the following night with a star-studded closing gala at the city’s Festival Theatre.
Shot primarily in Glasgow, McKay’s film tells the story of a writer struggling to complete her second novel. Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is to make her feature film debut as a leading lady in Glasgow-set indie comedy film Not Another Happy Ending which is due to start shooting next month. She plays successful writer Jane Lockhart who writes best when she's unhappy.

Here's the film's synopsis:

You may know actress Karen Gillan as her Doctor Who character, Amy Pond, but fans will soon know her as the star of Not Another Happy Ending. The fair-skinned actress just negotiated to continue on the cast of Doctor Who for a seventh season. If that excites you, you’ll really cheer after viewing season six’s trailer with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.
As for Not Another Happy Ending, Gillian there stars as a cooky writer, famous for a “miserable”, but best selling fiction novel who falls in writer’s block because since her success, she is too happy to continue writing sad content. In romantic comedy fashion, her publisher played by Black Death actor Emun Elliott (a 2009 Screen Star of Tomorrow), tries to break of her writer’s block by actively trying to make her more miserable, only to come to the realization that he is in love with her.
