Any British broadcaster who breaches general election programing rules will be hit with an Ofcom sanction, the regulator has said, a warning likely informed by a number of Gb News breaches over the past year.
In a strongly-worded broadside to the broadcasting community, Ofcom said it is putting broadcasters “on notice to maintain due impartiality ahead of the general election.”
“In particular, broadcasters are reminded that Rule 6.6 of the Code prohibits candidates in UK elections from acting as news presenters, interviewers or presenters of any type of programme during the election period,” Ofcom said today.
The right-leaning Gb News has been found to be in breach a number of times for its practice of having politicians host news programs, with the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg, Esther McVey and Phillip Davies falling foul. Gb News has been investigated more than a dozen times for a variety of potential breaches by Ofcom...

No medium understands the terrifying potential of TV quite like film does. That’s right: countless horror movies have paid homage to the spooky possibilities of their industry’s smaller screen little brother over the years. Movies like Poltergeist, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and The Ring all recognize that a television set is a powerful, scary totem.
A TV set is a device that families have placed in their living rooms for decades, passively welcoming in all manner of signals, blithely trusting that evil somehow won’t piggyback its way on them. Still, for much of television’s early years, there wasn’t a ton of great horror series to speak of (aside from the truly iconic like The Twilight Zone). That has all changed now.
With the arrival of the 21st century has come a veritable explosion of great horror TV shows. Thanks to the influence of...

Channel 4 News lead anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy has raised concerns that the government is using the likes of Gb News as a “platform” to avoid scrutiny.
The right-leaning network generated headlines this week when it was rapped by Ofcom for a show in which two Conservative politicians interviewed the Conservative Chancellor about the budget.
According to Guru-Murthy, there have been recent examples of Channel 4 News being told there was no time to ask government officials a question as that time had been taken up by “softball questions” from the likes of Gb News.
“I’m worried the government uses [the likes of] Gb News as a platform,” he added. “It is not the issue of them existing but how the people in power use them. If [the government] says ‘well that network is on our side’ or a left-wing party says ‘we’ll go to a leftie channel like [left-leaning website] Novara Media’ then that will be bad for public service broadcasting.

Piers Morgan has taken aim at the UK television’s strict impartiality rules, saying that they are outdated and fallible to challenge from influential people with agendas.
The presenter, who is regulated by Ofcom on Rupert Murdoch’s British TV network TalkTV, told the Rts Cambridge Convention that due impartiality is “pretty anachronistic.”
He added that the way news networks apply impartiality rules “leaves a lot to be desired,” pointing to ITV’s decision to remove him from Good Morning Britain after he accused Meghan Markle of lying about her mental health. Ofcom later found that the show was balanced because he was challenged by co-hosts.
Morgan has accused Markle of influencing ITV’s decision by filing a formal complaint. “Broadcasters have to stand up to this stuff, whether it’s from Downing Street or some princess in Montecito,” he said.

Piers Morgan revisited his controversial departure from former employer ITV two years ago following comments he made about Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, on his breakfast show “Good Morning Britain.”
Morgan, who was taking part in a debate about news impartiality at the Royal Television Society conference on Thursday morning alongside Channel 4 News anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy, suggested he had been “invited to leave his job” after he cast doubt on comments Meghan had made about her mental health during her May 2021 interview with Oprah.
Posing the situation as a hypothetical — “Imagine members of the Royal Family make a series of allegations,” he said, “and one presenter stands up courageously and says ‘I think it’s a pack of lies'” — Morgan said his comments could be viewed as “due impartiality” in light of other presenters’ support of Meghan. Russell Brand is vehemently denying what he’s describing as “very, very serious criminal allegations” against him — that haven’t yet been made public.
On Friday, the British comedian posted a video on his YouTube channel to issue a pre-emptive denial of accusations against him that he says will be surfacing soon.
“What I seriously refute are these very, very, serious criminal allegations.”
“I’ve received two extremely disturbing letters — or a letter and an email — one from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper, listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff, like my community festival should be stopped, that I shouldn’t be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel,” he said.
“But amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks, are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute,” Brand continued.

You’re watching the BBC News at 10, and everything’s gone bloody bats*** mental,” newsreaders may have wanted to say, but have not. For months now – years, even – broadcasters have been heroically reporting on the unfolding chaos of our political world without giving any hint of their own thoughts or feelings. They must tell us the unprofessional things the government has been doing while always remaining consummately professional. But levels of dysfunction within the Tory party have recently reached a high watermark, and some of the on-screen poker faces have slipped. And, frankly, who could blame them?
How, for example, could BBC newsreader Martine Croxall not get the giggles, late on Sunday night, when telling us that Boris Johnson wouldn’t stand in the leadership contest? His David Brent-esque return from the Dominican Republic to try and reclaim his old job had flopped beautifully, and the human response was to find that deeply funny.

A BBC News presenter has been taken off air for a potential impartiality breach after asking “Am I allowed to be this gleeful?” on a political program following Boris Johnson’s decision to pull out of the race to be Prime Minister.
Martine Croxall was presenting Sunday night’s BBC News edition of The Papers, in which journalists review the day’s newspapers, when she made the comments at the start of the program, around 90 minutes after Johnson had gone public with his decision.
“Well this is all very exciting, isn’t it?,” said Croxall. “Am I allowed to be this gleeful?”
She later remarked: “I’m probably breaking some terrible impartiality rule by giggling.”

BBC presenter Martine Croxall has been taken off air by the BBC after her “gleeful” reaction to the news that Boris Johnson was pulling out of the Conservative leadership race, according to reports.
The broadcaster was leading the BBC News channel’s review of the newspapers, The Papers, a few minutes after Johnson quit the race on Sunday (23 October), and she introduced viewers to the show with the words: “Am I allowed to be this gleeful? Well, I am!”
According to a report in The Telegraph, BBC bosses have now taken Croxall off air for an undefined amount of time.
A spokesman told the publication: “BBC News is urgently reviewing last night’s edition of The Papers on the News channel for a potential breach of impartiality.
“It is imperative that we maintain the highest editorial standards.”
The statement added: “We have processes in place to uphold our standards, and these processes have been activated.

Piers Morgan has hit out at calls for Boris Johnson to return as prime minister following the resignation of Liz Truss.
Johnson’s tenure as prime minister came to an end in September following a number of high-profile scandals and sinking approval ratings.
However, after Truss announced her resignation on Thursday (20 October) – becoming the shortest-lived prime minister in British history – the possibility of Johnson returning to the post has been discussed.
Speaking on his TalkTV series, former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan said: “Politics can be full of exaggeration. Everything is unprecedented, a crisis, treachery, a war. But let me be very, very clear tonight. It is literally impossible to exaggerate the scale of the bedlam that this government has unleashed on our country in the last few weeks.

During a breaking political news story, I usually watch both BBC News and Sky News on two different screens, just so I don’t miss anything. This week, like many others, I added a third channel: a livestream of a lettuce.
After Prime Minister Liz Truss’ hard-line policies plunged the economy and her political party into turmoil, the Economist published an eviscerating column about her time so far in office, saying that she “has the shelf-life of a lettuce.”
So, the British tabloid Daily Star then decided to put this theory into action. They bought a lettuce, attached some googly eyes, placed it next to a framed photo of the Pm and published a livestream. “Can Liz Truss outlast this lettuce?” the publication asked readers.
It was a joke that, as you can imagine, set Twitter alight. But it also felt like something that would not Romaine long in the public consciousness (I’m sorry.

U.K. public service broadcaster Channel 4 has taken news anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy off air for a week after an incident on Wednesday where he abused member of parliament Steve Baker off-air.
“Channel 4 has a strict code of conduct for all its employees, including its programming teams and on-air presenters, and takes any breaches seriously. Channel 4 has sidelined news anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy for one week after he was caught on tape describing Tory MP Steve Baker as a “c***” following an interview.
Louisa Compton, Head of News and Current Affairs and Specialist Factual at Channel 4, said in a tweet: “Channel 4 has a strict code of conduct for all its employees, including its programming teams and on-air presenters, and takes any breaches seriously. Guru-Murthy made the remark, which was not broadcast on television but was later picked up on a livestream, after an interview with Baker, during which he discussed Liz Truss’s government and the chaos that ensued earlier that evening at a crucial Commons vote on the future of fracking in UK.

David Baddiel, Kathy Burke and Krishnan Guru-Murthy are among the celebrities who have reacted with joy to Miriam Margolyes swearing about Jeremy Hunt live on Radio 4’s Today programme.
At the end of an interview on the Saturday morning episode of the show (15 October), actor Margolyes told the hosts her reaction to seeing the new chancellor, Hunt, in the studio.
“When I saw him there,” she told Justin Webb and Martha Kearney, “I said, ‘You’ve got a hell of a job, best of luck.’ And what I really want to say was, ‘F*** you, bastard.’ But you cant say that.”
“Oh no no no you mustn’t say that,” replied Webb. “We’ll have to have you out of the studio now.”
“We will,” added Kearney. “With many apologies.”

Exclusive: Channel 4 has stoked anger in the British television industry after swapping producers on its tentpole election night show without a formal competitive process.
The British broadcaster announced last month that BBC Studios-backed Expectation will co-produce its Alternative Election Night on December 12, the day Britain heads to the polls in a crunch vote that could determine the country’s future relationship with the EU.
The decision to hand Expectation the Alternative Election Night, a live election results show with an entertainment twist, meant that Endemol Shine Group outfit Zeppotron was sidelined after originally creating the format in 2010 and having produced it on three separate occasions since the turn of the decade.
Two sources told Deadline that the decision was made without a formal competitive pitching process and that Channel 4 has had to go back to Zeppotron to request key production materials to maintain the show’s consistency. Channel...

The BBC has confirmed that while one of its cameramen was injured outside Jeremy Corbyn's home, the incident did not involve one of the new Labour Party leader's aides.
Some media outlets had suggested that one of Corbyn's staff had injured the cameraman, but the BBC has said that the incident in fact involved a government driver.

The Paper Towns actor got a dressing-down from a TV show on account of her downbeat interview style, but remember that the junket environment is one that rarely inspires peppiness
It’s easy to be suspicious of entertainment journalists who spring rather too readily to the defence of celebrities ambushed by other journalists – if anyone has got the moxie to break the convention and ask awkward questions, like Krishnan Guru-Murthy has managed on a couple of occasions, then I say good luck to them. (Truth is, the vetting that film companies put in place for anyone seeking access to their “talent” means he’s not likely to get another chance.) All the same, it’s hard not to feel a bit sorry for Cara Delevingne after she was basically told she wasn’t being peppy enough in a short TV spot by the presenters of a local TV show in the Us.

I have written previously in this space about my unabashed adoration of Howard Stern, but even casual fans know that the King of All Media's skillful long-form interviewing style is one of his most enduring qualities. He conducts hard-hitting interrogations that feel like casual conversations, leading normally guarded celebrities to offer revelations and opinions they would probably never utter in another forum. This year alone, he has helped draw out newsworthy bites from a number of big stars, and with 2015 more than half over, I thought I'd recap the wildest, most revealing quotes that have come out of Studio 69 in the past six months and change (with attendant clips). Here we go... 1. Jason Alexander tells the real story behind Susan's "Seinfeld" demise Date: June 3 Behind-the-scenes dish on famous TV shows never gets old, and Alexander's tidbit about actress Heidi Swedberg (who played George's ill-fated fiancee Susan) was particularly juicy. Maybe doing the seemingly endless publicity rounds for "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is getting to Robert Downey Jr. He seems snarky and cranky.
Last week, Robert Downey Jr. was the darling of the movie publicity world for berating UK journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy for his inane questions about the actor's relationship with his father and previous drug use. Okay, I agree with Downey Jr. on that. Guru-Murthy's questioning was a bit Diane Sawyerish for a freaking Marvel movie!
But, this week, the actor becomes the villain of independent filmmaking. Talking to Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM channel 105), Downey Jr. revealed that he would not work on a low-budget film anytime soon! Why? Oh, let the actor speak for himself in this transcript from indiewire.com:
"Because they're exhausting and sometimes they suck and then you just go, 'What was I thinking?' But I'm interested in doing all different kinds of movies.

The press tour for "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" is pretty much at an end, and Robert Downey Jr. is feeling a little punchy. He walked out of an interview with Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy, later calling the journalist a "bottom-feeding muckraker." And now the actor is going all Tony Stark on indie moviemaking, while also throwing some shots back at Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Chatting with EW, Downey Jr., who spent his comeback back years making a string of smaller movies both at the indie and studio level ("The Singing Detective," "A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints," "A Scanner Darkly," "Charlie Bartlett," "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "Goodnight And Good Luck"), expressed he has zero desire to go off and make a tiny film, working on a shoestring budget. And he had some very harsh words about that world and being a part of a movie on that level. “...they’re exhausting and sometimes they.

Robert Downey Jr. doesn't regret walking out of his interview with Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy last week. After the British journalist decided to steer away from talking about Robert's new movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and ask him personal questions about his drug-fueled past, the actor got up and walked out. Robert explained his distaste with the entire situation on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius Xm on Tuesday, saying, "I'm one of those guys who, I'm always assuming the social decorum is in play, and that we're promoting a superhero movie, a lot of kids are going to see it, and that just has nothing to do with your creepy dark agenda." He also said that he hated "feeling all of a sudden ashamed and obligated to accommodate your weirdo sh-t." He then pretended to address Krishnan directly, saying, "You know what? You are a bottom-feeding muckraker." Since the interview,...

Among Hollywood A-listers who will give you a lively, entertaining interview, Robert Downey Jr. ranks right up there. He's a playful ranconteur, who tends not to speak in pre-chewed soundbites, and gives his honest answer about most things. And particularly when doing the tedium of the endless press junket for a blockbuster like "Avengers: Age Of Ultron," it's appreciated both by journalists and those reading, listening or watching his latest media appearance. But as you already know, things went really badly when Rdj recently chatted with Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy When the interview started broaching the actor's drug past, time spent in jail, and relationship with his father, Robert Downey Jr. tolerated the open line of inquiry as much as possible, before becoming clearly frustrated, and walking out. Now, he explains his strong feels about what the talk he had with the "bottom-feeding muckraker." Read More: Robert Downey Jr. Says Superhero Films.

As the exhaustive press tour for Avengers: Age Of Ultron comes to a close, Robert Downey Jr has commented on his decision to walk out of an interview with Channel 4's Krishnan Guru-Murthy last week.
After asking Downey Jr some questions with regards the film, Guru-Murthy then moved on to talk about the actor's past (and his well-charted drug battles, and prison time). Eventually, after questioning whether they were there to promote a movie, Downey Jr got up and left the room. The clip made its way around the internet really rather quickly.

"I just wish I had left sooner," said Downey Jr. "This has nothing to do with your creepy dark agenda that I'm feeling all of a sudden ashamed and obligated to accommodate your weirdo shit." He talks about how he's there to promote a movie, and then calls the Channel 4 News journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy a "bottom-feeding muckraker" and "syphilitic parasite." Robert Downey Jr. and the cast of "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" are on the press circuit right now, going through interview after interview. On the other side, so are the reporters. Both sides may be bored with the same questions over and over. For the journalists, part of the job is to try and come up with a question or angle that isn't the same old, "What was it like working on this movie vs. the last one?" They are not working for the movie studios, so it's not their jobs to sell the product. But you also have to respect the star's privacy and recognize that they are there to promote a specific project, not open their personal lives for your headline.

I feel so sorry for UK Journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy. Robert Downey Jr. walked out of their interview promoting "Avengers: Age of Ultron." That's the key word here, promoting. But Guru-Murthy was more interested in Downey Jr.'s past including his relationship with his father and previous drug use.
So maybe I really don't feel sorry for Guru-Murthy. He should know that during press junkets, questions must be about the film that's being promoted, and if you have to ask something personal, it must revolve around the movie.
At one point, Downey Jr. even asked if they're supposed to be promoting a movie! To which Guru-Murthy, maybe because of over zealousness, ignored.
I've done my share of press junkets and so far, no one has walked out on me...yet. Please cinema gods, don't let this happen to little, old me!

Earlier on today, Dave posted an article about Robert Downey Jr. walking out of an interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy. After being asked about a quote he gave to the New York Times in 2008 and his alcohol and drug addictions in the past, Rdj decided he had enough and said "I’m sorry, it’s just getting a little Diane Sawyer in here.” And he was right to end the interview prematurely and walk out. The sad thing is though, Krishnan Guru-Murthy was actually doing a good job at getting into the super-hero mindset, up until he asked about the New York Times quote in 2008. I rather enjoyed the interview up until then. Far be it from me to defend Rdj, in the past I've always felt when it came to piling the pressure on for negotiations with Marvel Studios, he always projected the whole debate if he'd return or not to gain some leverage.
