Filming begins next week on a big-budget family drama, which producers hope will herald a new era in non-English language shows within the British Isles.
The Guardian reports that four-part thriller An t-Eilean (The Island) is the most expensive drama ever made in Scots Gaelic, coming in at £1million ($1.25m) an episode.
Cast and crew will descend on Amhuinnsuidhe Castle on the island of Harris – a location near Taransay, previously used for reality TV show Castaway in the early 2000s.
Backers include the BBC, which has enjoyed ratings triumphs with previous Welsh-language series Keeping Faith (Un Bore Mercher) and Hinterland (Y Gwyll). The show is co-production between Black Camel Pictures, Mg Alba, the Gaelic broadcasting agency, Screen Scotland and US-owned distributor All3Media.
The Guardian reports that, due to the work of All3Media, the show has already received offers from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Belgium.

Some Album of the Year victories at the Grammys fly somewhat under the radar. Others are like George Michael’s iconic “Faith.” The singer’s debut solo album was not only a massive success, but its victory at the Grammys cemented it and Michael’s legend status. In a way, “Faith’s” win was not only unconventional, but inadvertently may have opened the gates for queer artists at the award show.
Michael was obviously no stranger to success. He was part of the duo Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley from 1981 to 1986. With Wham!’s music being more lighthearted and targeting a younger audience, Michael felt the need to disband and pursue a more mature career in music, like many young teen-pop stars. As such, the duo separated in 1986, and Michael began working on his debut album, “Faith.” While in Wham!, he had decided to label himself as bisexual, although he kept...

*Warning: Spoilers for episodes 1-8 of Gangs of London to follow*
“I received the episodes and I read six first and I was like, ‘Oh, I understand why Gareth wants me to do that,’” laughs Xavier Gens talking to us via Zoom from lockdown in Paris. The French director took charge of ‘block four’ of epic crime drama Gangs of London, which sees the decline and fall of the Wallace and Dumani clans leading up to the dramatic end of season finale.
Episode six might as well be dubbed ‘the torture episode’. After the countryside siege that dominated Gareth Evans’ episode five – a standalone that acts as a pivot point for the series but exists in the timeline directly after episode two but before episodes three and four, six takes us back into the linear narrative armed with new information.

The debut feature from writer-director William McGregor, Gwen is a dark, chilling period drama that cleverly blends Gothic horror and social realism. As such, it’s an arresting and memorable first feature that marks out McGregor as a talent to watch.
Set in North Wales in the mid-19th century, the film stars Eleanor Worthington-Cox (The Enfield Haunting) as Gwen, a teenager who lives with her younger sister Mari (Jodi Innes) and sickly mother Elen (Maxine Peake) on a rural farm in Snowdonia. The trio are patiently awaiting the return of Gwen’s father (Dyfrig Evans), who’s off fighting in the Crimean War, but a run of bad luck befalls the farm, putting its future in jeopardy. Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip is a three-part series of essays by Tim Concannon.Targets: The Lost Midnight MOVIEIn revisiting Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets we’re invited to unearth an archaeology of cult cinema. Targets links the old Hollywood of Schwab's, Chateau Marmont and the Garden of Allah hotel to what, in 1968, was to be the new Hollywood of easy riders and raging bulls. "All the good movies have been made"—Peter Bogdanovich as Sammy Michaels, Targets1968's Targets, is the story of an aging film star played by expat Anglo Indian thespian, Boris Karloff. Karloff's Byron Orlok (named after Count Orlok in Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu) is clearly Karloff playing a grumpier version of himself. As two parallel stories converge in the film's Third Act, the Old Hollywood horror icon Orlok is confronted by a serial killer—gun nut and sniper Bobby Thompson,...

Gareth Evans, the action visionary behind The Raid, co-created TV series Gangs of London for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic.
The cult cinema myth of Gareth Evans’s innovative 2011 Indonesian action flick, The Raid: Redemption, is still resonating several years after its release. However, Evans, who also tackled Netflix horror film Apostle, and remains in the mix to direct DC's (up-in-the-air) Deathstroke movie, has heeded the call of peak television as the co-creator – with Matt Flannery – of an action series called Gangs of London.
Evans contributes as a director for Gangs of London's 10-episode run, using his Raid repertoire to handle complex choreographed fight scenes. However, he shares that duty of director with Corin Hardy, who handled four episodes, joined by French helmer Xavier Gens, who helmed one. The series is a co-production of HBO/Sky with Pulse Films and Sister Pictures and is...

Even though Netflix has started to cancel its underperforming series in earnest, that doesn’t mean it lacks for programming. In fact, its slate of offerings is fuller than ever, which makes it difficult for viewers to choose when faced with an embarrassment of bingeable riches.
Netflix’s foreign series, however, rarely get promotion amidst all of the other American shows that have been produced. Although IndieWire has previously provided handy lists of foreign-language series a couple of times, including other imports, that is only a hint of all offerings available.

After the events of season two, Dci Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington) is on the hunt for Iwan Thomas (Geraint Morgan). When Thomas is found dead though, Mathias is soon under suspicion in an investigation that will discover a cover-up connected to an old case that threatens to create a rift with the whole team.
Season three of Hinterland is interesting because it brings in a conspiracy that goes right to the top, and connects to the past. While each of the four episodes has a case to be solved to keep things moving, the hunt for the killer of Iwan Thomas is an the on-going overall story arc.
The problem with the case of course is that it threatens to unravel the cover-up, which people don’t want to be revealed.

"Sherlock" may not return for its fourth season until -- say it ain't so -- 2017, due to the hectic film schedules of in-demand stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. In the meantime, you can rewatch all three seasons and soon you can binge on Cumberbatch in "The Imitation Game" and Freeman in "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies." But what then?
If you're craving more veddy British crime solving, you don't have far to look. Here are some of the best series the BBC (and ITV) has to offer, with private detectives, psychiatrists, cops, spies, and forensic pathologists all cracking cases, catching criminals and drinking lots of tea.
1. "Sherlock Holmes" (1984-1994)
If it's more Sherlock you crave (and not just Mr. Cumberbatch), then you must see Jeremy Brett's intensely intellectual (and equally arrogant) period-appropriate take on the legendary detective. This Watson is also solid, especially in "The House of the Baskervilles.

Wolfblood series 3 changed leads, expanded its world, and grew even stronger. Here’s why the supernatural Cbbc show deserves to live on…
Contains spoilers for Wolfblood series 3.
Still teaching ‘grown-up’ supernatural shows how it’s done is Cbbc’s exemplary Wolfblood, which yesterday concluded its third run in the UK.
Series three cleared a hurdle at which previous fantasy and sci-fi dramas have fallen by losing its lead character yet continuing to prosper. It's almost September, which means a whole new slew of titles on Netflix! August proved pretty lucrative on the quality title front, but it looks as though September it's going to blow the rundown out of the water.
TV takes spotlight this month, with the latest full seasons of "The Walking Dead," "New Girl," "The League," "The Blacklist," "Arrow," "Bones," and "Parks and Recreation" primed and ready for streaming before their fall premieres. And fans still mourning the loss of "How I Met Your Mother" (in more ways than one) can rewatch the ninth and final season to their heart's content. Ah, memories. The name Craig Roberts has been high on the list of promising film talent ever since he took the screen by storm in Richard Ayoade’s film, Submarine, in 2010. That role brought with it well-deserved recognition, and a slew of varied offers, including The Double, Bad Neighbors and 22 Jump Street. Now, Roberts is turning all that good will into tangible opportunities behind the camera, by beginning pre-production on his own directorial debut at the tender age of just 23 – Just Jim.
Written by Roberts himself, Just Jim features the lead character realizing that he will be considered part of the socially acceptable group of teenagers, if he can successfully negotiate with his handsome and mysterious American neighbour.
