One of the most frustrating aspects of covering festival and indie films has been the limited access for a wider audience – very often review comments run along the lines of: “Tell me where I can see this!” 2015 was a year that finally saw some great shifts in this, with a number of festival films finally getting a theatrical release – some of them films that had been on the festival circuit for a couple of years, some of them hot off the 2015 festival rounds. Audiences for both festival and indie films are small, but they’re growing, and access to this year’s “best of” selection should be easier for interested viewers. 2015 was, indeed, a great year for these films – enjoy our choices for Festival and Indie Bests!

Churni Ganguly’s National Award winning film Nirbashito (The Banished) is both an unflinching and compassionate look at the idea of exile, through the story of a writer, a poet, whose work has so inflamed political sensibilities that she ends up banished from her homeland, forceably torn from her home, moments after fussing over and feeding her beloved cat, Baaghini, which is the last thing she looks at as she is dragged out the door, flown to Rajasthan, taken to Delhi, and from there out of the country, under tight security. Nowhere, it seems, is safe for this writer. Nowhere in India, at least, and perhaps nowhere in the world, as the tight security which her Swedish protectors provide for her once she arrives in Stockholm shows.

Kolkata, Nov 16: National award winning filmmaker Ketan Mehta Wednesday said that his film 'Rang Rasiya' is a small token of response against the persecution of painter M.F. Hussian who was hounded out of the country for pursuing his creative freedom.
'The film is a small little way of response and reaction to the climate of intolerance that was sweeping in the country five -six years back. What happened to Raja Ravi Varma hundred years ago happens today also. If you look at M.F. When the digitally cleaned up .India, Matri Bhumi. was screened at the ongoing Viennale, Austria.s international film festival, it revived memories of the sincere way that films were made in Europe soon after the tragedy of the last World War..India, Matri Bhumi. is a 90-minute documentary shot in 1956 by Italian film maker Roberto Rossellini, father of neo-realism. In contrast to escapist fictional films, Rossellini.s cinema is celebrated for its honesty and for his focus on activities of concern to ordinary citizens. Therefore, admirers of the film have cleaned off the dust it was collecting on the shelf to fine tune the soundtrack, sharpen the images and to restore the print for audiences of the day.Hans Hurch, director of the Viennale, discovered .India, Matri Bhumi. a few months ago at the Venice film festival and felt that he had to screen it in Vienna..This is perhaps the best film of Rossellini.

Bollywood is in mourning following the death of celebrated Indian artist/filmmaker M.F. Husain on Thursday.
Husain - full name Maqbool Fida Husain - passed away in a London hospital following a battle with ill health.
Nicknamed the Picasso of India, Husain was the country's highest paid painter but his portraits of naked Hindu goddesses sparked controversy amid accusations of obscenity. He eventually left India in 2006 to take citizenship in Qatar.
Husain also dabbled in filmmaking and his 1967 debut, Through the Eyes of a Painter, was awarded the Golden Bear prize at Germany's Berlin Film Festival.
A number of Bollywood's leading figures have paid tribute to Husain, with director Anurag Kashyap branding him a "great filmmaker, a special person and a genuine artist".

Actor Raghuvir Yadav, who starred in Husain's Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities, says, "It is sad that an artist of such a stature is no longer among us. Working with him was a learning experience. He was peaceful by nature and a open-minded (sic) person."
Yadav's Meenaxi co-star Kunal Kapoor writes in a post on Twitter, "Deeply saddened by the news about Hussain (sic). He was not only a great artist but an incredible human being. His passion and love for life was contagious and unparallelled. May his soul rest in peace."...

M.F. Hussain is one of the most prominent painters in the world but the man has a lot to say about our Bollywood actresses. He has previously been smitten by Madhuri Dixit and even Amrita Rao. Unfortunately, due to the content of his paintings, deemed obscene, the painter has been exiled from India and is now putting up in Qatar, Doha. Still, the 94-year-old painter does not miss out on his Hindi movies. Granted, he may not sit through the entire film but he definitely goes for a quick dekho. In an interview with a leading newspaper, Hussain spoke about his favorite B-Town actresses and has some interesting comments about a few other ones.
On Madhuri Dixit: I speak to her on the phone. But see, she wasn't a typical Bollywood girl even at the height of her popularity. Often, I remember a small scene from Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

A very beautifully organized and a very noble deed is all what I can recall when I went to Taj Lands End, Bandra yesterday on March 1, 2009.
The event organized by the jewellery designer Roopa Vohra was certainly one of its kinds. What made this fashion show different from others was that instead of hot blond looking models walking down the ramp in short skirts and high heels, we had some very much known and renowned people walking up the ramp. There was a silent auction later, the proceeds going to Prerana Ngo. Big and reputed artists like M.F. Hussain and others.
