The Beekeeper (David Ayer)
It’s the time of year for smooth-brained relaxation. Moviegoers can recover from the holidays with the comfort of knowing Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson, or Jason Statham will be here to satisfy their mid-budget, action-programmer needs. Is it really the new year if one of those cherished Kings of January doesn’t appear on the release slate? There’s no Gerry or Liam, but the ever-reliable Statham dons a trucker hat and blue jeans to grit his way through David Ayer’s The Beekeeper, an overall valiant, occasionally fun attempt to take us out of Q1 doldrums. – Conor O. Lyrics that include the words “dick,” “fuck” and “pussy” are not the typical wholesome, family content the Academy’s Music Branch tends to recognize. But occasionally, they have allowed a couple to slip through. A24’s “Dicks: The Musical,” the opening night Midnight Madness at TIFF, has an onslaught of hilarious and catchy tunes that I wish the Oscars would be brave enough to nominate.
With so many hilarious tracks to choose from, including “Gay Old Life” and “The Sewer Song,” Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion brings down the house with her delivery on the rap and dance number “Out-Alpha the Alpha.” It could and should be one of the many songs to consider for this year’s Academy Awards, and distributor A24 confirms they’ll submit the movie for Oscar consideration.

There are a lot of words you could use to describe Dicks: The Musical, A24's first foray into the musical form. Freaky. Disgusting. Toe-tapping. Queer. Outrageous. Ingenius. Incomprehensible. Queer. Bizarre. Did I mention queer? Because yes, it is, and delightfully committed to staying true to its off-broadway, grotesque, ridiculous, fringe roots while taking full advantage of the budget afforded to go as far as allowed, and even more than a few steps further. The opening film of the Midnight Madness section, the delightfully monstrous film, brainchild of writers and performers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, delights in its perversion that leaves few stones unturned in throwing its in audience into its madness. Directed by Larry Charles, and starring Jackson, Sharp, Megan Mullally,...

A grotesque and often grotesquely funny musical about twins trying to Parent Trap will prove an endurance test for many
You don’t have to be insane to inhabit the daft bizarro dimension in which the writer-stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson situate the Dada-on-Horny-Goat-Weed delirium of Dicks: The Musical, but it helps. That said, you do have to have an enduring love for – or at the very least, an appreciation for the distinct tonalities of – musical theater, the petri dish that incubated this special little mutant abomination. What began as an Off-Broadway sensation titled Fucking Identical Twins enters cinemas clawing and snarling, odds-on the American entertainment industry’s most insistently and consistently strange, grotesque creation this year. And if not that, it’s a safe bet that it’s still the only one with a disembodied, talking, flying pudenda.

When God (Bowen Yang) sees two virile young men plowing women, selling gears, and telling everyone they know that they do both of those things better than anyone else He ever created, He also sees their profound sadness. Because despite living their best lives, Craig (Josh Sharp) and Trevor (Aaron Jackson) don’t know love. Not familial love. One never had a father. The other never had a mother. And, as everyone knows, a one-parent home isn’t really a home at all. No, it’s borderline child abuse.
That’s the premise behind Sharp and Jackson’s toxically heteronormative satire Dicks: The Musical, directed by Larry Charles and based on the pair’s Upright Citizens Brigade stage musical Fucking Identical Twins. They may not look it (and the film makes forcing us to believe it anyway into a thing), but Craig and Trevor are brothers. Twin brothers. That’s...

“As far as I was concerned, it was like, ‘I’m just doing this dumb show with my friends,’” remembers composer Karl Saintt Lucy of Fucking Identical Twins, the one-act off-Broadway musical that ran in 2015. Over a half decade later that, that “dumb show” is now one of the more anticipated openings at TIFF. Retitled Dicks: The Musical, the A24 movie is an R-rated dirtbag version of The Parent Trap where two megalomaniacs (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) discover they are twins and try to get their parents — played by Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally — back together.

Exclusive: A24’s Sofia Coppola directed movie, Priscilla, will now go wide on Nov. 3 instead of Oct. 27.
The news comes on the heels of a glowing world premiere out of the Venice Film Festival where the movie based on the Priscilla Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me grabbed a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Dune: Part Two moving off of Nov. 3, it creates more breathing room for others movies and availability of theaters. And, true, it’s also the last weekend ‘official’ weekend of the Taylor Swift: Eras Concert movie.
Talent and creators of the film including Coppola, Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi are now cleared to promote the film since it was granted a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement ahead of its world premiere.

Toronto: Does “Dicks: The Musical” even need a review? If you’ve seen the trailer, you know exactly what you’re getting into, but we’re gonna give it our best shot. Already a cult movie musical before it even hits theaters (not a bad thing), this A24 production is adapted from Ucb veterans Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson‘s two-person stage show “F**king Identical Twins,” which used to play in the basement of a New York City Gristedes supermarket before the pandemic.

It is no secret that film festivals have had to rely on directors to provide the star power fueling their big premieres during the strikes, but opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival mostly failed to deliver even that.
The first audience for Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” the festival’s official opening title, only got an introduction from Studio Ghibli VP Junichi Nishioka. Meanwhile the audience at the later screening got an extra speech from surprise guest Guillermo del Toro.
The big special presentation of the night, actress Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut “North Star,” is an acquisition title, so one would think the cast would be in the clear to promote the film starring Scarlett Johanssen, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, and Thomas herself, but instead producer Finola Dwyer flew solo to introduce the movie, saying “Kristin, Scarlett, Sienna, and Emily would have loved to...

Roughly 90 minutes after someone in the audience yelled that request out, the people sitting in the Royal Alexandra Theatre would find themselves being showered with makeshift confetti, led in a gospel sing-along by folks in church-choir robes, and batting around beach balls and, naturally, inflatable penises. A24’s Dicks — The Musical got the 2023 Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section off to a raucous, rollicking start as the world premiere of Larry Charles’ campy comedy brought the house down.
The TIFF Midnight Madness crowd came ready to party and the mood was set early, with a swinging, softshoe number by Midnight Madness programmer Peter Kuplowsky, who danced on stage belting out a musical tribute to the festival’s beloved cult-film sidebar. “I’ll be your host for the next 10 midnights, this is only the beginning!” said Kuplowsky. “We have so many outrageous movies for you!”
Dicks — The Musical, Charles’ adaptation of the off-Broadway musical Fucking Identical Twins by Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, was the perfect film to kick off the section, said Kuplowsky, because it is a film “where love is love and dicks are dicks!”

A raucous, deliriously madcap midnight premiere of “Dicks: The Musical” closed out the first day of the Toronto Film Festival. A24’s first-ever song-and-dance movie, which leans hard into its R-rating and puts an irreverent, queer spin on “The Parent Trap,” played to laughs, cheers, audible gasps and shrieks and, yes, a few groans from the Royal Alexandra Theatre. The night ended, fittingly, as giant, inflatable genitalia flew through the audience.
“What’s up, perverts? Why are you up so late? You should be in bed with your beautiful wives!” comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp joked as they took the stage at 12:02 a.m.
They star in the film, which is adapted from their Upright Citizens Brigade two-man show called “Fucking Identical Twins.” Jackson and Sharp may have changed the title for the screen, but the general story and original songs — with lyrics like “life’s a fucking handjob,...

How lucky for us that Hayao Miyazaki, the animation master with a gift for enchanting world-building, didn’t stay retired? The prolific Japanese filmmaker makes an exciting return with The Boy and the Heron, which opened in Japan earlier this summer. Inspired by Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel How Do You Live?, The Boy and the Heron chronicles the adventures of a young, bereft boy who discovers an abandoned tower and a persistent grey heron while exploring his new town.

A24’s first musical feature is a ride that, for better or worse, I’m ready to get on. Comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp play two businessmen who find out they are twins and try to reunite their parents.

You've seen A24 films about somewhat literal man-eating aliens ("Under the Skin"), people being turned into walruses ("Tusk"), farting corpses ("Swiss Army Man"), talking shells ("Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"), and the multiverse ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"). Now, the studio is trying its hand at a musical for the first time with "Dicks: The Musical," a film that, contrary to my expectations the first time I saw that title, is not about singing penises. I mean, A24 only just made a film featuring a giant penis monster, so it wasn't out of the question.
Backing up -- "Dicks: The Musical" comes from relative newcomers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, who both wrote the film -- which is based on their original two-person stage musical "F***ing Identical Twins" -- and star as a pair of obnoxious business bros who find out they're literal twins and conspire to get their divorced parents back together.

A24 has unveiled the official trailer for its first-ever movie musical Dicks, which arrives in theaters September 29th.
Written by and starring comedy duo Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks is a play on The Parent Trap, in which two rival businessmen (Jackson and Sharp) discover they’re long-lost twins and decide to trick their eccentric divorced parents (Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally) into getting back together.
Naturally, the twins get into some trouble along the way, including some very stylish reprimanding from their bar-spitting “lady boss” Megan Thee Stallion and a visit from a divinely-dressed Bowen Yang. See the trailer for Dicks: The Musical below.
Megan Thee Stallion will next headline One Musicfest this October at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, and tickets are now on sale here.

The first trailer for A24’s first musical feature, entitled Dicks: The Musical, features Megan Thee Stallion rapping, a song about how “life is a handjob” and creatures called “sewer boys.” And that is just a taste of the insanity unleashed in this project, which will open the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section.
The film was written by and stars comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp (The Opposition With Jordan Klepper) and is based on their 2014 two-man stage show titled “Fucking Identical Twins,” which ran at the Upright Citizens Brigade. Fresh off being announced as TIFF’s opening night Midnight Madness movie comes the premiere of the trailer for Dicks: The Musical. Being billed as A24’s first movie musical, the movie stars Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp, along with Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion and SNL’s Bowen Yang as God himself. Originally titled F*cking Identical Twins, the film seems to be a subversive, very R-rated twist on The Parent Trap.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles also starring Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God.

The Toronto Film Festival pulled the curtain off its lineup for this year’s Discovery and Midnight Madness sections with notable titles respectively teeing off both programs’ opening nights: Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl and Borat director Larry Charles’ Dicks: The Musical from A24.
The Midnight Madness section counts 10 features, seven of which are world premieres. The Discovery lineup, which primarily boasts world and international premieres, includes 26 titles. Notably, 13 female filmmakers representing 50% of the total program are featured in this year’s Discovery; that lineup is known for being a window to contemporary world cinema with first and second movies from frosh filmmakers. With Midnight Madness films, it’s anything goes.
“We’re excited to be showcasing new voices, audacious vision, and genre-bending cinema,” said Anita Lee, TIFF Chief Programming Officer. “TIFF’s Discovery and Midnight Madness programs for 2023 will once again prove to be the ultimate destination for tastemakers and experience seekers.

A24 gave their satirical slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies (you can read our 8/10 review at This Link) a wide theatrical release back in August, and now it has been announced that Bodies Bodies Bodies is heading to Blu-ray and DVD on October 18th – so it’s coming home just in time for Halloween. Copies are available for pre-order on Amazon.
A24 first purchased Kristen Roupenian’s Bodies Bodies Bodies spec script back in March of 2018. The script was said to show “heightened sensitivity to character development and social dynamics in a subversive way”, and was described as

Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally and Bowen Yang are set to star in a new R-rated musical comedy called “F*cking Identical Twins” from A24 and Chernin Entertainment that is a subversive spin on “The Parent Trap.”
Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp will both write the script and star in the film as two business adversaries who realize they’re identical twin brothers and decide to switch places in order to reunite their divorced parents and become a family again.
“F*cking Identical Twins” is based on Jackson and Sharp’s two-man stage show that premiered at the Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014. They are adapting the show for the screen along with original songs by Jackson, Sharp and Karl Saint Lucy.
Larry Charles, the director and producer known for “Borat,” “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is on board to direct “F*cking Identical Twins.” The film is in production now.

The SXSW Film Festival is returning to its in-person roots with a vengeance next month.
