Tom Johnson, who received two Emmy Awards for his writing on The Daily Show, has died. He was 55.
Johnson died “peacefully and unexpectedly” at his Los Angeles home on Jan. 14 of a cardiac issue, his wife, actress Rozie Bacchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He never got to eat the Texas toast he was making, or the 4 lbs. of crab legs he found on sale and crammed in the freezer two nights prior,” she said in a statement.
“Tom had such a big heart and cared deeply about taking care of others. His work ethic was impeccable. He was fair, kind, talented, inclusive and funny as hell.”
Born on July 25, 1968, in Fairfax, Virginia, Johnson began his career after college and founded the Network Comedy Troupe. He also toured as a comedian and performed at venues across the country and on television.

When Brian Stelter signed off from the last installment of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Aug. 21, the number of mainstream vehicles analyzing an increasingly confusing media industry shrank even further.
Stelter bid farewell the same day Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan ended her run — asking such notables as Carl Bernstein and Jeffrey Goldberg on air whether the press is doing enough to cover topics ranging from disinformation to climate change. The lead story of his hour was a dire one: his program’s own cancellation after three decades. “It’s going to be on you to hold CNN accountable,” Stelter told viewers in the show’s waning moments, later adding: “The free world needs a reliable source.”
Why did CNN terminate a show that has been on its Sunday schedule since the early 1990s? Since acquiring the company once known as WarnerMedia, executives at new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery...

Peregrine falcons are not Harry Potter fans.
If you live along the eastern seaboard of the United States, now is the time to look for snowy owls, Bubo scandiacus. These mostly-white owls, made famous by Harry Potter's faithful companion, Hedwig, are Arctic birds as one realises when they catch a glimpse of their thick insulative plumage -- even their feet and toes are protected with feathers. Despite this, lots of these birds are suddenly appearing in all sorts of strange places -- even in Bermuda and Hawaii!
Snowy owls are large and dramatic birds, standing two feet tall with a five-foot wingspan, making them very conspicuous. Adult males are pure white whilst the larger females retain some dark barring on their feathers. The juveniles and immatures have much heavier barring on their plumage. (Keen-eyed observers will notice that Hedwig was actually portrayed in the Harry Potter films by a number of individuals,...

Star Trek: The Video Game arrives on April 23 and shines a special spotlight on the Gorn, that toothy reptilian race that conquered the collective heart of Starfleet fans back in 1967 but never enjoys the kind of attention those loudmouth Klingons get.
April also brings us National Poetry Month and though it’s not the smartest pick as far as the calendar goes (the real reason T.S. Eliot called it the “cruellest month” is because nothing rhymes with April) the timing does work out nicely for our ongoing Days of Gorn celebration, which features previews of the Gorn varieties in...

Exclusive: Comedy Central has ordered new series starring comedians Anthony Jeselnik, Amy Schumer and Ben Hoffman for a 2013 launch. Jeselnik’s show is a weekly, topical series reflecting his dark and twisted point-of-view, Schumer will topline a sketch series, and Hoffman will star in a sketch/man-on-the-street hybrid. “These three shows have one thing in common, and I dare viewers to watch every single episode to find out what it is,” said Kent Alterman, Comedy Central’s Head of Original Programming and Production. The untitled Anthony Jeselnik series is written and executive produced by Jeselnik and head writer Tom Johnson. Showrunner Krysia Plonka and Mosaic’s Christie Smith are also executive producers. Jeselnik is probably best known for his appearances on Comedy Central’s roasts of Charlie Sheen and Donald Trump. Jeselnik, who recently taped a one-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central, Anthony Jeselnik: Caligula, had this response to...

England faces South Africa in the second test of this three game series. After losing last week in Durban, Stuart Lancaster’s men must win on Saturday to draw the series and take it to a winner takes all game next week. Leave your predictions or comments either in the comments below or as always on Twitter @ballintouch
England’s best chance of beating South Africa on this tour was probably last week, at sea level against a side with barely a week’s preparation together and several new caps. The result if you missed it was a narrow 22-17 loss for Stuart Lancaster’s men that showed some encouraging stuff that ultimately fell short.
The next game this Saturday is in Johannesburg at Ellis Park, a stadium renowned for being at altitude and a happy hunting ground for South Africans, especially in 1995. Besides the extra week of getting-to-know-you time...

Having ridden a wave of support since taking charge as caretaker and then full time, the honeymoon period will be well and truly over on Saturday for Stuart Lancaster as he unleashes his young guns on South Africa in Durban for the first Test of the three match series. For all their hospitality off the pitch,South Africa will be far from welcoming on it. Any fresh faced men in white who pause to take in the moment, be it their first cap or trip to the Southern Hemisphere, will find themselves flattened by a tsunami of South African aggression. If you ain’t local, you’re in trouble.
Counting in England’s favour is that this is Heyneke Meyer’s first game in charge and there are also...
