“I spent a lot of time reviewing the silent films for crowd scenes –the way extras move, evolve, how the space is staged and how the cameras capture it, the views used,” Nolan said earlier this year when it came to the creation of his WWII epic Dunkirk, referencing films such as Intolerance, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, and Greed, as well as the films of Robert Bresson.
Throughout the entire month of July, if you’re in the U.K., you are lucky enough to witness a selection of these influences in a program at BFI Southbank. Featuring all screenings in 35mm or 70mm — including a preview of Dunkirk over a week before it hits theaters — there’s classics such as Greed, Sunrise, and The Wages of Fear, as well as Alien, Speed, and even Tony Scott’s final film.

Running from 1-31 July, BFI Southbank are delighted to present a season of films which have inspired director Christopher Nolan’s new feature Dunkirk (2017), released in cinemas across the UK on Friday 21 July.
Christopher Nolan Presents has been personally curated by the award-winning director and will offer audiences unique insight into the films which influenced his hotly anticipated take on one of the key moments of WWII.
The season will include a special preview screening of Dunkirk on Thursday 13 July, which will be presented in 70mm and include an introduction from the director himself.
Christopher Nolan is a passionate advocate for the importance of seeing films projected on film, and as one of the few cinemas in the UK that still shows a vast amount of celluloid film, BFI Southbank will screen all the films in the season on 35mm or 70mm.

Hitchhiking to the Edge of Sanity
Logline: In the turbulent social upheaval of the early 1970s, an idealistic writer and his soon-to-be-married photographer friend set out to find their purpose via a terrifying hitchhiking trip across the Sahara Desert.
Elevator Pitch:
In 1971 in Accra, Ghana, Steve Ewert woke up in a cold sweat. Bugs crawled out his mouth. Fear gripped his very soul. “I’m losing my mind!” he cried repeatedly to his travel companion Dick Russell.
What started out as two young Kansas kids setting out to find themselves in late 1970, turned to disillusionment and danger.

Legendary lyricist Tim Rice's new musical, From Here to Eternity, is currently playing at Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse through July 20. Based off the 1951 novel of the same name by James Jones, the show tells the story of a group of U.S. Army soldiers during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. From Here to Eternity, as Rice tells us via a phone interview, is much different than some of his past musicals including The Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast. 'It's not like Aladdin or The Lion King,' he explains. 'The material is very different and more mature than those shows. It's a very complex story. There is a lot going on in it but that is what makes it such a beautiful show.'...

Nowhere else in the world does techno quite like Germany, which is why Mannheim festival Time Warp has remained a staple of Southwest Germany’s music scene for as long as it has. Case in point: The events organizers have released the official lineup for its 2016 edition, which reads like a veritable who’s who of dance music’s original “other” genre.
Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox and Dubfire are but a few of the veteran artists on the lineup. Adam Beyer and Nicole Moudaber will bring some of the Drumcode energy to the occasion (although most artists who belong to the label are considered too mainstream by true techno elitists), and The Martinez Brothers and Jamie Jones are even likely to incorporate a little house groove into their performances for those seeking some semblance of variety.

Don't worry, the world isn't coming to an end, but rather Secret Cinema were celebrating Star Wars Day with an extravagant event ahead of their Empire Strikes Back summer project.
Digital Spy were among the many Star Wars fans who came together to mark May the Fourth at Secret Cinema's latest venture, which involved us getting changed into white boiler suits and being put in our own factions.
RebelX leaders cleverly placed all 3,000 of us in specially-marked areas, so that a drone could fly above us and take some amazing photos of everyone spelling out the freedom fighters' name.

Everyone loves a nice, large diverse festival lineup, right?
Chicago’s Spring Awakening Music Festival will be returning this year for its fourth outing, taking place at Soldier Field on June 12th-14th, and today, the official lineup has been revealed. Boasting a number of exciting acts spanning several different genres, there’s certainly a little something here for everyone.
Headliners include heavy hitters like Zedd, Diplo, Eric Prydz, Martin Garrix and Afrojack, among others, but there’s also a whole slew of other artists that make up this very eclectic, stacked and varied lineup. Plus, there’s still an unannounced “surprise headliner,” so things are only going to get more exciting from here.
As it stands, however, the lineup is a strong mix of mainstream and underground artists, with representatives from almost every sub-genre of Edm. It really is an impressive list of performers and we highly recommend checking...

Sean Penn: Honorary César goes Hollywood – again (photo: Sean Penn in '21 Grams') Sean Penn, 54, will receive the 2015 Honorary César (César d'Honneur), the French Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Crafts has announced. That means the French Academy's powers-that-be are once again trying to make the Prix César ceremony relevant to the American media. Their tactic is to hand out the career award to a widely known and relatively young – i.e., media friendly – Hollywood celebrity. (Scroll down for more such examples.) In the words of the French Academy, Honorary César 2015 recipient Sean Penn is a "living legend" and "a stand-alone icon in American cinema." It has also hailed the two-time Best Actor Oscar winner as a "mythical actor, a politically active personality and an exceptional director." After Tomorrowland announced that it would be introducing an opera stage at the festival this year, Ultra has made a similarly surprising reveal in the form of Resistance.
Described by the organizers as “an urge to go against the grain, to step out of the box and to move away from the norm and challenge yourself to experience something new,” Resistance will be a new stage at the festival dedicated to shining a light on more underground DJs, featuring artists like Art Department, Jamie Jones, Guy Gerber, and many more.
Further details on Resistance are still under wraps, but it’s clear that Ultra has something exciting in store for those who have tired of main stage music, and we’re definitely looking forward to seeing how this all plays out come March.

Drifter: A Brief Disruption of Tranquility on a Wednesday Afternoon in the West
Written by Tres Dean
Art: Jamie Jones
Lettering/Design: Kate Durré
Self-Published
The Wild West, filled with dusty, one horse towns, the typical saloon, and now mech-suits. Drifter, written by one of IGN’s comic reviewers, Tres Dean, captures the appeal of the old west with a sci-fi twist. The comic’s eponymous drifter is our protagonist, and we enter on a scene inside a town’s saloon. Almost in an expected fashion, a bandit walks in and demands the contents of the safe from the woman at the bar, and the drifter steps in, the bandit commenting that this man should be dead. In a post-western story, this sequence of events is easy to follow to the point of almost becoming trite. It is not until the two step outside onto the single street does the...

As the democratization of film has made it possible for just about anyone to make a film, it has conversely made it more difficult for the individual filmmaker and his or her films to stand out. Online content platforms now offer a hundred times more films in their catalogs then the films cataloged by IMDb from the inception of film (1,764,727 titles as of 14 Jan 2011). So despite assertions to the contrary, branding is more important than ever.

I didn’t think I would be, but I am a huge fan of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man. I am looking forward to what he is going to do with the sequel. With that being said, I am a self-proclaimed spoiler junkie. I just can’t help myself. It is like when you see someone getting pulled over on the side of the road, you have to almost physically restrain yourself from looking. Whenever I see the word spoiler my Pavlovian reaction is to see what is going on.
This here really isn’t A Spoiler, it is more of a 'eh, spoiler.' Nothing major is revealed here, but if you have any adverse reactions to spoilers, then save yourself the possibility of an allergic reaction and stop reading. Alphas: Malik Yoba and Erin Way Discuss Kat's Introduction Tonight!

Talented Erin Way (Detroit 1-8-7, When You Find Me) plays young loner Kat whose Alpha ability is a touch-based memory skill, like an instant download, that unfortunately wipes away old memories to make way for the new.
