Once upon a time, a group of college kids journeyed deep into the woods with a camera, a few bucks, a ton of fake blood and enough creativity and general filmmaking chutzpah to fill a dozen movies. The result was "The Evil Dead," a Diy horror masterpiece and cult phenomenon.
Director Sam Raimi's feature film debut has since spawned merchandise, costumes and even a stage musical over its 30-year legacy. Upon the release of the big-budget remake, itself affectionately titled "Evil Dead," here are some of the best — or should we say grooviest — "Evil Dead" tributes out there.
Animated 'Evil Dead' Tribute by Daniel Kanemoto
This is amazing. Someone give this man a lot of money so he can turn this into a feature-length film or a Netflix series or something.

If you're a fan of "The Evil Dead" trilogy then get ready to say "Groovy!" Check out this minute-long animated tribute, drawn in the style of renown Mondo artist Ollie Moss. The entire piece was directed, drawn, and animated by Daniel M. Kanemoto. To say this is quite possibly the coolest thing I've seen in a long time would be the understatement of the year. Check it out and leave a comment if you are a "Evil Dead" fan! Source: YouTube...

The folks at Mondo must be beaming with pride today --one of their posters has inspired a new animated short. Based on an Olly Moss design, Ex Mortis Films and director Daniel M. Kanemoto have come up with a minute-long journey through Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films. Watch it below. The thing I love about this short is that it not only has some pretty cool design, direction, and animation, but it could almost serve as an example of how to do an Evil Dead ride at Disneyland. Not that the studio is going to incorporate splatter comedy into their theme parks any time soon, but Kanemoto's work is reminscent of some of the great old Disney rides that encapsulate the films on which they're based in fun, spooky ways -- like...

Ex Mortis Films has unveiled a sweet animated tribute to the Evil Dead franchise.
Daniel Kanemoto was the artist who made this happen, and he had this to say about his work (courtesy of Dread Central): “I created all the artwork in the sequence, but the final image is directly inspired by an incredible Evil Dead poster created by Olly Moss. The moment I saw it, I only wanted to see it move – which is how I feel about all great posters. The new wave of artists working with Mondo have made movie posters worth collecting again, and that’s a great thing. I hope to someday join their ranks.”
Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi better watch out.

Were you planning on sleeping tonight? I don't f*cking think so. Mondo artists put out some seriously good work. They have made the best posters for the past couple of years that I've seen in awhile. No floating heads, no unproportional body parts, commonly used color schemes, or any other photoshop massacre. While they are truly great and make us regular humans feel inferior, some people actually get inspired by them. Daniel Kanemoto is one of those people. After seeing The Evil Dead...

Daniel Kanemoto of Ex Mortis Films created an animated tribute to the Evil Dead trilogy (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness), inspired by a Mondo poster designed by Olly Moss. Mondo, of course, is the Austin company that creates limited edition, filmic artwork, along with vinyl soundtrack releases, VHS re-issues, and tees. They also have a new gallery space — a necessary venture, particularly for those hot-ticket sales moments when their website explodes. Moss is a regularly featured artist at the company. Fans of the Bruce Campbell-starring films will be happy to relive the sights, sounds, and characters of Sam Raimi's iconic movies in a unique way. "This is my cinematic love letter to three influential movies that made me want to be a filmmaker,"...

You may remember Daniel Kanemoto from his animated intro for The Walking Dead TV series that became quite popular last year. He was also worked on an official trailer for The Walking Dead video game and is back with a new animated tribute to the Evil Dead trilogy:

If you're an Evil Dead fan, which I'm pretty sure most of you are, you're going to love this! When it comes to horror franchises, Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series has it all. Scary, funny, gory, and with tongue always firmly in cheek, the franchise just might be as close to perfect as a horror trilogy can get. A remake is on the way, but that doesn't mean that we've forgotten about the originals, and one fan has created a spectacular tribute to those movies to prove it. The guys at Poster Collective point us to the work of Daniel Kanemoto, who is actually paying homage to Olly Moss' awesome poster for the first Evil Dead in his video, which takes us on a whirlwind tour of all three movies that hits all of the high points. Telltale Games has released the first full-length trailer for their upcoming zombie shooter based on the hit comic book series, The Walking Dead, combining gameplay footage with some slick-looking animation in between. In fact, the animation was created by Daniel Kanemoto, the same man who designed the incredible looking fan-made opening sequence for The Walking Dead television series back in 2010, before the series began to air. It turns out that he impressed some folks over at Telltale and, in turn, the company hired him to work on the trailer.
The upcoming game will follow an entirely different group of survivors separate from both comics and the hit AMC television series and is expected to ship in April, 2012.

Daniel M. Kanemoto is a writer/director whose 1999 debut, A Letter From The Western Front, won the Gold Medal for Best Animated Short at the Student Academy Awards. For the past decade, Dan’s diverse body of work (from feature films to national commercial campaigns) has been featured on Nickelodeon, MTV, the Discovery Channel, and film festivals around the world.
Daniel animated a spec title sequence using artwork ripped from the pages of the Walking Dead comic, originally illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore, and personally I think it is much better than what AMC has produced. He is no way affiliated with the production, simply a huge fan of both Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman, but rumour has it that the producers liked it so much, that perhaps they may give him a chance to work on season 2. Here is the video. Enjoy.

If you're like me, and I know you are just a little, then you're looking forward to AMC's premier of The Walking Dead on October 31st. I've informed my children that there will be no trick-or-treating this year because Daddy already has plans and no amount of crying or caterwauling is going to change that. I've also invested in some hounds to unleash should parents allow their spawn to knock upon my door. Note to parents: this post on a website that you never read constitutes fair warning. I've checked with my lawyer who lives in a box in my alley and he said as much (I pay him with fifths of vodka). This time you can't blame me when little Tommy comes home one limb less. Asshole.
Anyway, Daniel Kanemoto is looking forward to The Walking Dead too. However instead of sitting and home and furiously rubbing one out...

The art of making an opening credit sequence is a tricky one. The good ones stand out totally independent of their show (I've never loved Dexter but who doesn't love that his killer morning routine?) and the bad ones can be a show's lone black eye (Boardwalk Empire's one flaw in my opinion is their anachronistic opening credits). The early buzz on The Walking Dead is fantastic (unsurprisingly), but what is still to be seen is whether or not it will feature an awesome opening credit sequence. Well one fan of the books is artist Daniel Kanemoto and he wondered the same thing. "I wondered what the opening titles to this terrifying new television show might look like...

Comic-book nerds and zombie fanatics alike have all been excited since Robert Kirkham's modern comics classic The Walking Dead was optioned by AMC a few years ago. The 2010 Comic-Con International saw tons of footage debut to enthusiastic response. While the show doesn't start airing until Halloween, that same enthusiasm inspired one Daniel Kanemoto to create a credit sequence using artwork from the Image Comics series and the Eels tune "Fresh Blood."

The Walking Dead fan Daniel Kanemoto decided to create an animated title sequence for the upcoming AMC-produced Frank Darabont adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s zombie comic book series. The fan made title sequence uses artwork "ripped from the pages of the comic, originally illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore.” Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof even commented on the fan created video: "We are arriving at that unique moment in time where the term 'fan-made' becomes moot. This is extraordinary." I agree. Watch the video for yourself after the jump.

Daniel M. Kanemoto is an award winning writer/director whose diverse body of work (from feature films to national commercial campaigns) has been featured on television channels and film festivals around the world. After attending this year's Comic-Con and being taken by Drew Struzan's "Walking Dead" poster for the series, he was inspired to animate a spec version of the opening credits, using the original art straight from the comics by illustrators Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore. What he completed is an amazing professional opening credits sequence that should, quite honestly, replace whatever AMC has planned for their sequence. And while this is utterly and completely a fan-made work, it has already garnered the attention of Tony Moore who said on the Vimeo page featuring the work "this seriously blows my mind. i've scarcely seen my artwork brought to life like this, and never with such style." Check it out for yourself,...

Here at Dread Central we pride ourselves on being very fan-centric. In short, whenever a horror fan goes above and beyond and makes something cool, we give them their due. Such is the case with Daniel M. Kanemoto, who created one hell of an opening credit sequence for AMC's upcoming show "The Walking Dead".
"The Walking Dead" tells the story of life following a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, traveling in search of a safe and secure home. Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, Teachers, Strike Back) portrays the lead role of Rick Grimes while actor Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer) portrays the character Shane, who worked with Rick in the police department before the zombie disaster. Other cast members include Laurie Holden ("The Shield"), who plays Andrea, one of two sisters who join the survivors of the zombie plague, Steven Yeun as Glenn,...

Zombie lovers, comic book fans, and self-respecting geeks everywhere are eagerly anticipating the Halloween premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead, a TV series adaptation of the critically acclaimed comic book series of the same name by writer Robert Kirkman about survivors of a zombie plague. In fact, Daniel Kanemoto is so ready to be a fan of the drama (led by Oscar-nominated director Frank Darabont) that he took it upon himself to create a credit sequence for the series—and in turn has gained some fans himself. Since Kanemoto posted the credits on Sept. 24, he’s received Tweets of...

One thing I already admire AMC’s handling of The Walking Dead for is the way they have kept creator Robert Kirkman front and center. The Kirkman created series of comics is the basis for The Walking Dead, and the production isn’t being shy about flying their comic-geek flag. Too often creators are left behind when their creations are sucked up by the great television and film machine – not the case here at all. Kirkman often appears as a humble spokesman for his creation
What I love about this opening title sequence for The Walking Dead is that it pays homage to The Walking Dead’s comic roots, using the imagery of the comic. Like the ever present Kirkman, the use of the comics imagery – which is clearly a huge influence on the set – mixed with tasty rock vibes and equally tasty animation is pure genius, again treating Kirkman’s impetus with total respect.

Daniel Kanemoto is a self-professed fan of filmmaker Frank Darabont and comic book writer Robert Kirkman. Like all of us he's been following the development of AMC's Walking Dead TV show and liking what he's been seeing so far. But Kanemoto wanted to take things further and so he went ahead and created his own idea of what the opening credit sequence on The Walking Dead TV show could look like.
"Just so there's no confusion, I'm not affiliated with the production in any way -- I'm simply a huge fan of both Frank Darabont and Robert Kirkman, and this is my attempt at creating a cinematic introduction to one of the all time great 'continuing stories of survival horror,'" Kanemoto said on the Vimeo page where he posted his video.
What he did is seriously, seriously cool. Check this out -- better yet, someone from AMC or the Walking Dead TV production,...

Composer Ryan Shore is one of the rising stars of the film music world. Thanks to his collaborations with MovieScoreMedia, more and more of his scores are now available to the public. Headspace, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the Macedonian movie Senki (Shadows) are just a number of titles available from their catalogue. In the summer, Msm released a three-way collection of jazzy scores from Ryan's career: Numb, Kettle of Fish and Coney Island Baby are just pure fun to listen to. Now a new collection is available, collecting together a wide range of short film scores from Ryan's earlier days. The award winning animated shorts include the much-requested Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher, the Claymation short Shadowplay and the dark comedy Cadaverous. What connects together these scores apart from being written by the same composer is that you'd never think they were written for short films - they could underscore...
