The modern TV system is definitely undergoing some major changes as it demonstrates that it’s no longer just the networks that decide fan-favorite shows’ fate, but the fans themselves also seem to be getting their right to have a voice.
Though so far the examples of some series that were brought back to the screen after official cancellation aren’t that numerous, the overall tendency is quite positive, and it seems like another popular show is about to get a second chance after a huge campaign started by its lovers from the other side of the screen.
Some fans of recently scrapped successful shows like NCIS: Hawai’i or So Help Me Todd may hold their breath here, but, to their great disappointment, the lucky series has nothing to do with CBS at all.

Kathryn Newton channeled her inner “Lisa Frankenstein” for a special screening of the film at the Hollywood Athletic Club, donning a dramatic black corseted Vera Wang gown with exaggerated tulle hips.
“There was no other dress option. I have a little heart I took from my last boyfriend,” Newton told Variety on the black carpet, pointing to her blood-red heart-shaped choker and giggling, “Just kidding – I don’t have a boyfriend!”
In the film from Zelda Williams, Newton’s Lisa and a re-animated corpse dubbed “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) embark on a murderous journey to make him whole by claiming some of his missing body parts from the living. Even though Sprouse doesn’t speak a single word in Diablo Cody’s campy script, communicating only through grunts, Newton says they had no trouble selling their chemistry.
“Have you looked at Cole Sprouse? It’s very easy to have chemistry.

As of Labor Day, September 4, 2023, Hollywood's writers and actors remain on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May 2 and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) joined them on July 13.
The WGA has decried the AMPTP's latest counteroffer (made near the end of August) as insufficient, softening existential threats to writers' careers instead of solving them. Rather than good faith engagement, the AMPTP's strategies have included publicly releasing their counteroffer (in clear hopes of putting public pressure on the WGA to accept it) and retaining public relations firm the Levinson Group. That last move is probably the source of recent puff piece profiles of figures like AMPTP President Carol Lombardini and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

There is a major change in the WGA negotiating team ahead of the March 20 start of talks with studios on a new contract. Wgaw Executive Director David Young, who has spearheaded multiple bargaining campaigns on behalf of the writers, is going on a medical leave of absence starting today, the guild’s leadership told members in an email this afternoon.
“Wgaw Assistant Executive Director Ellen Stutzman will serve as chief negotiator for the 2023 Mba negotiations,” the letter said. “Ellen has earned the confidence and full support of the Wgaw Board, Wgae Council, and the WGA Negotiating Committee. She will lead a staff with decades of experience negotiating and enforcing the Mba, and organizing and mobilizing members to support the Guilds’ contract campaigns.”
No additional information about Young’s condition or expected return day has been revealed but the guild’s officers wished him a full recovery on behalf of the entire membership.

The Writers Guild’s key priorities for its upcoming contract talks are beginning to come into focus.
As speculation about a potential strike — which, if it took place, would be the first since the union picketed for 100 days in 2007-2008 — runs rampant across the industry, this week Guild leaders began informing members of their initial ideas for a bargaining agenda in meetings that took place on Saturday at the Writers Guild Theater and Wednesday at the Hollywood Palladium. (Additional meetings are set for Feb. 23 in Universal City and in New York City.) Some top, big-picture items on the agenda: setting minimum television writing staff sizes and strategies for gaining higher compensation for members.
Discussed at these meetings, insiders say, were possible proposals aimed at improving TV writer weekly pay, elevating residuals for TV writers, raising compensation for comedy/variety writers and universal span protection for all television writers (shielding more...

With Covid-related production and release delays mostly in the rearview mirror, those arriving this week at the Sundance Film Festival will face another potential conundrum.
The hope among filmmakers and interested sellers is that the dual requirements of a two-tracked exhibition system — films for theaters and movies for streaming — will fuel a bull market. Fears abound that as streamers claim to restore fiscal sanity while Wall Street no longer cares about subscribers and content spends, the reckless content splurges of the past will cease to drive eyes-are-bigger-than-your-stomach purchases.
Save for Amazon’s Prime Video and Apple TV+, which arguably can still overbid, studios and streamers might be less willing to throw money at high-profile but commercially questionable titles. Concurrently, fears of an upcoming Writers Guild strike could lead to more wealth being spread around toward more movies in another variation on content-for-content’s sake spending.

Fans of HBO Max’s “Julia” were boiling mad when the delicious series about the legendary Julia Child’s early days of television stardom failed to earn a single Emmy nomination over the summer. But with Golden Globes nominations less than a week away, some hope is beginning to simmer again for its captivating star Sarah Lancashire, who could rightly nab her first ever bid for her transformative and utterly charming performance.
According to our current combined odds, Lancashire will just make the cut in the TV comedy actress race, rounding out a category that we anticipate will feature returning champion Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”) and past winner Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).

Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the entirety of “The Cleaning Lady” Season 2, Episode 7, titled “Truth or Consequences.”
The midway point of “The Cleaning Lady” Season 2, the seventh episode aptly titled “Truth or Consequences,” sees the confluence of several narrative conclusions orbiting Thony’s (Élodie Yung) family and their accidental yet growing status in Las Vegas’ criminal underbelly; among them, Chris (Sean Lew) begins healing from his traumatic involvement in Marco’s death, the impetus of the Fox crime-thriller’s sophomore installment, and Arman (Adan Canto) shows how far he’s willing to go to protect Thony. It’s all part of the plan creator Miranda Kwok envisions on her quest to lead a series that embodies a type of “female ‘Breaking Bad,’” as Thony couches her wavering morality in a kill-or-be-killed environment.

The Writers Guild of America has tapped former presidents David Goodman and Chris Keyser to co-chair the guild’s negotiating committee, leading the fight on what are sure to be difficult bargaining with Hollywood’s major players in the first half of next year.

“The thing that really jumped off the pilot script that I read was the relationship between Paul and Julia, two very strong people,” recalls David Hyde Pierce about what drew him to the HBO Max series “Julia.” The first season of the show focuses on how icon Julia Child started her television cooking series “The French Chef” on public television in Cambridge, Ma. The four-time Emmy-winning actor stars as Julia’s husband Paul, whose initial “skepticism” about TV was overcome by “his love for and belief in her.” “I liked that journey,” adds the actor. The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

From the very start, “Julia” producer Chris Keyser decided there wouldn’t be any shortcuts when it came to creating the food scenes for HBO Max’s origin story of the famous TV chef. It had to taste good and look even better to honor the spirit of Julia Child.
Production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein and food stylist Christine Tobin threw themselves into making sure all the ingredients were perfectly combined, and the result was a delicious-tasting menu of scenes spotlighting the mouth-watering dishes and the Childs’ enjoyment of eating. “It was just wonderful,” says von Brandenstein. “I hope we can carry that torch into our next adventure. The food is still central, and there’s no place better to start than in France.”

“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to do something about food,” shares Daniel Goldfarb, the creator and writer of HBO Max’s “Julia.” Although he did not always have a dramatization of Julia Child‘s life in mind, the culinary arts have always been a part of his life, and the television icon and host of the legendary show “The French Chef” seemed a perfect fit. For the series, Goldfarb teamed up with showrunner Christopher Keyser, who describes “Julia” as an exploration of the “evolving, wonderful marriage” between Child and her husband Paul. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
To launch a new series about Child, Goldfarb and Keyser had to cast their Julia, and they both immediately thought of Sarah Lancashire. “We’re both just huge fans of her work,” Goldfarb says about why they thought of the BAFTA Award-winning actress, adding that they “think she’s...

The Society is dead and buried at Netflix.
Despite scoring a second season renewal, the streamer canceled the series last week because of difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a result, fans have been left wondering what might have happened in the second season, and series creator Christopher Keyser is offering up some teases to fans.
“We spent a lot of time talking about the reasons why the children of West Ham became the children of New Ham — what the cause of that was, how they might return home,” Keyser told Variety.
He explained that the second season would have further explored the open field with farmable land, which became crucial as New Ham’s resources started to run out.
We would have delved deeper into“the establishment of what we called the ‘outpost,’ and the eventual conflict between the outpost and the town over control,” Keyser said, adding...

Christopher Keyser, who created “The Society,” found out Thursday that Netflix was suddenly pulling the plug on his show. The streamer, which also canceled “I Am Not Okay With This,” released a statement Friday saying, “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by Covid.”
“We spent the last bunch of months getting ready to go back again, dealing with all the Covid protocols,” Keyser told Variety Monday. “And then I got a call from Netflix saying, ‘We have made this decision.’ It was obviously pretty upsetting and abrupt.” Keyser, whose credits include co-creating “Party of Five,” said he and co-executive producer Pavlina Hatoupis spent the rest of Thursday and Friday calling the cast and crew preparing them before the news broke.

It's been 20 years since we said goodbye to the Salingers. Two decades before Freeform teamed up with creators Amy Lippman and Christopher Keyser and introduced viewers to the Acosta children—Emilio, Lucia, Beto, Valentina and baby Rafa—in a timely, but ultimately short-lived update on their classic series, which followed their struggles to survive daily life as a family unit after their parents are suddenly deported back to Mexico, Fox was laying the blueprint with the beloved Party of Five. Premiering on Fox on September 12, 1994 and running for six seasons and 142 episodes until its series finale on May 3, 2000, Party of Five may not ever have been as splashy or over-the-top as...

In rebooting their 1994 teen drama “Party of Five,” Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman haven’t just dusted off their old IP to cast a new slate of characters in a familiar story. Instead, they’ve twisted their original concept to fit a scenario that is top of mind in 2020. Whereas their first show followed five siblings learning to live after both their parents die in a car accident, their Freeform version — developed alongside new writer and producer Michal Zebede — centers the Acosta family, which gets torn apart one night when Ice picks up parents Javier (Brunco Bichir) and Gloria (Fernanda Urrejola) at their family restaurant. Once they’re deported to Mexico, their children Emilio (Brandon Larracuente), Lucia (Emily Tosta), Beto (Niko Guardado), Valentina (Elle Paris Legaspi), and baby Rafa have to grapple with the realities of raising each other, as well as their own heartbreak, now that their parents can’t.
