Released during the Chinese New Year of 2022, this Korean War battlefield drama depicting two squads of snipers, the Chinese and their US adversaries, from Zhang Yimou and daughter Zhang Mo is a small scaled sideshow instead of an all-out warfare between the countries involved as compared to ”The Battle at Lake Changjin II”.
During the “Cold Gun Movement” of 1952, the Chinese People Volunteer Army took part in guerrilla warfare helping their northern comrades to fight the invading US troops. A group of young snipers known as The Fifth Squad led by sergeant Liu Wen Wu, a sharpshooter nicknamed “Grim Reaper” by his enemies, is one such unit. While on an extraction mission to bring back comrade Liang Liang, a spy who has vital information concerning the US army, Liu and his squad felt into a trap laid by a group of US snipers.

Despite being the best known Musou series, Dynasty Warriors has spanned a number of genres over the years. From a traditional fighting game to strategy spinoffs, players have been able to experience the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history in a number of ways. The latest spinoff is Dynasy Warriors: Godseekers, a tactical role-playing game that stars series’ mascot Zhao Yun as he and his friend Lei Bin awaken a magic-wielding woman named Lixia who had previously been sealed away.
Adding this magical aspect to the Dynasty Warriors world may seem out of place, but considering Koei Tecmo has always played it rather loose with their historical interpretations, it ends up fitting in just fine. After some backstory for all of the characters is given, it’s revealed that Lixia isn’t at her full strength and needs to find several orbs that have been scattered across the land in...

As usual, two of the most dependable martial arts action stars do not disappoint. The newest DVD release of Anchor Bay Entertainment’s The Lost Bladesman starring Donnie Yen and Reign of Assassins with the lovely Michelle Yeoh are both hypnotizing and chalked full of heart pounding action. The Lost Bladesman
The Lost Bladesman takes place during tumultuous times when the three kingdoms of ancient China were drowning in warfare. It’s a daring and gripping story peppered with heroic battles. In a struggle for power, only one can obtain it. The strength of one man’s blade would decide it all then deliver him into an unyielding fate.
Even though his character is an unstoppable force, Donnie’s humbling approach to Guan Yuanchan (Guan Yuan) truly defined “a wolf with the soul of a lamb.” He is masterful with the blade. Though not without compassion as only his enemies experience its fatal wrath.

It seems reasonable to expect that a movie called “The Great Wall,” billed as the biggest production in China’s filmmaking history, would feature Chinese actors. Instead, when Universal and Legendary released the trailer for Zhang Yimou’s film, the first face viewers saw was that of the decidedly white Matt Damon, fighting monsters atop the Middle Kingdom’s most famous monument.
In America, it was a call to arms in the battle against whitewashing, that curious tendency to insert Caucasian faces where history tells us there were none. “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world,” wrote comedian and “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu in a lengthy, impassioned statement posted to Twitter. “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon.”
China had another take. There, the prevailing sentiment over the trespass on their national identity might best be described as a Whatevs.

Director: Zhao Lin Shan. Review: Adam Wing. An epic tale of love, power and betrayal, The Assassins is another big screen account of the life and times of Cao Cao. Forgive us for lacking excitement over here, Cao Cao has appeared in more films than Samuel L. Jackson, though I'm pretty sure his box office success pales by comparison; he wouldn't quite cut it with a purple lightsaber either. In the early era of the Chinese Han Dynasty, Prime Minister Cao Cao (Chow Yun Fat) ventured to the east and savagely defeated China's greatest warrior, Lv Bu. He terrified every warlord in the country and crowned himself King of Wei. Meanwhile, young lovers Mu Shun (Tamaki Hiroshi) and Ling Jv (Crystal Liu Yi Fei) were taken from a prison camp to a hidden tomb where they spent five cruel years being trained as assassins for a secret mission. The Assassins...

For viewers still smarting at Chow Yun Fat having dropped out of John Woo’s epic “Red Cliff” comes “The Assassins”, finally offering fans the chance to see the actor playing legendary Three Kingdoms personage Cao Cao. Marking the debut of former advertising director Zhao Lin Shan, the film also boasts the visual talents of Zhao Xiao Ding, a regular collaborator of Zhang Yimou who was nominated for an Oscar for his stunning work on “House of Flying Daggers”. In addition to Chow Yun Fat, the film features an impressive cast that also includes Crystal Liu (“The Four”), Alec Su (“The Message”), Ni Dahong (“A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop”), Annie Yi (“My Kingdom”) and Japanese actor Tamaki Hiroshi (“Nodame Cantabile”) as the various other players in the complex plot. Killer Joe (Lionsgate) William Friedkin’s film of Tracy Letts’ off-Broadway hit about a family of Texas trailer park cretins (Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon) who hire a cop-cum-hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to take out their troublesome mother, then foolishly cross him, is a stinging satire, given double-barreled audacity by Friedkin’s sure, and fearless, directorial hand. Earning its Nc-17 rating in spades, “Killer Joe” reminds us that daring, frank material like this is why movies exist in the first place. McConaughey gives the performance of his career, hopefully redefined after this. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by Friendkin; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
The Dark Knight Rises (Warner Bros.) Christopher Nolan’s coda to his “Batman” trilogy finds Christian Bale returning as a brooding Bruce Wayne/Caped Crusader, this time faced with a hulking villain (Tom Hardy) with respiratory...
