Once upon a time there was a film industry that wasn't dominated by the comic book behemoths of D.C. and Marvel. Where a comic book style movie felt fresh, innovative and where the Hong Kong production line hadn't been stripped bare in the service of mainland blockbusters with a patriotic core. “Black Mask” in many respects is a last hurrah of an industry about to go through immense change. As Eureka Entertainment bring it to blu-ray, it's time to revisit this Frankenstein's monster of a collaborative effort between several unique talents.

Following the canon of “All About Ah-Long”, Johnnie To directed another family drama that is filled with violence and pessimism, although this time, in tamer fashion, particularly due to the extensive (for a Milky Way film) dialogues and some notions of black humor.

The late Benny Chan directed “The White Storm” back in 2013 starring Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung. In “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords” (2019) which starred Andy Lau and Louis Koo, Herman Yau took over as director. Now in 2023, Yau is back in this in-title-only third installment again featuring Koo, Lau Ching Wan and Aaran Kwok, the newcomer to the series. All these actors play different characters altogether but the themes of war against drugs, royalty and brotherhood are still there but told in a new storyline.

Following the masterful “Limbo”, all fans of (classic) Hong Kong cinema were eagerly awaiting Soi Cheang's next step, with the director opting for an even more classic Hk approach, that will remind many of the Wa Ka-fai, Johnnie To classic, “Mad Detective” with the latter actually being the producer of “Mad Fate”.

The Hong Kong Film Awards gave a huge dose of support to veteran filmmaker Mabel Cheung Yuen-ting, naming her documentary “To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self” as best film on Sunday, despite local controversy which saw it pulled from screens earlier this year.
The numerical winner on the night was “Detectives Vs Sleuths,” which earned four major awards: best director, best screenplay, best actor (Sean Lau Ching-wan) and best cinematography.
The hugely popular Sammi Cheng was named winner of the best actress award, her first win after six previous nominations.
Michelle Yeoh was on hand to present the prize for best new performer to 10-year-old Sahal Zaman, for his role in “Sunny Side of the Street.” Yeoh, who recently won the Oscar for best actress in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” established her career in Hong Kong and won the same award back in 1986 with “Yes, Madam.”

Normally pinned for their gritty gangster tales, Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai’s efforts in romance and slapstick have often been sidelined. But as loveable titles “Fat Choi Spirit” and “Turn Left, Turn Right” have proved, the directing/producing duo are indeed dai lous (big brothers) of many genres. “Fat Choi Spirit”, following the tradition of Hong Kong gambler flicks, and like its title: spirit of endless wealth, is the hilarious gift that keeps on giving.

Exclusive: Released in August, Louis Koo’s sci-fi action thriller Warriors Of Future has become not just the highest-grossing local film in Hong Kong ever, but the highest-grossing Asian film ever released in the territory, with a gross of HK81.7M (US10.5M). The film also raked in 100m in China over the summer and is currently number four in Netflix’s global ranking of non-English language films after launching worldwide on December 2.
It’s an encouraging result for Hong Kong’s film industry, which suffered through some of the most frequent and lengthy cinema shutdowns during the pandemic – the last one only ending this April. It’s also an extraordinary achievement for a Hong Kong sci-fi movie, as the territory has never before attempted to produce a film of this genre and at this scale.

Hong Kong actor Louis Koo loves science fiction and collects “Stars War” merchandise so it is no surprise that he would produce a sci-fi film financed by his own company “One Cool Film Production”. Although it would take him a few years to finish his expensive personal project, it eventually paid off big time to the tune of over HK80 Million and became the highest grossing domestic film at the local box office. Furthermore it went worldwide due to it being streamed on Netflix.

Warriors of Future is a sci-fi action movie directed by Yuen Fai Ng, starring Louis Koo, Carina Lau, Lau Ching-Wan and Nick Cheung.
‘The Transformers’ fans, this movie is for you.
Premise Warriors of Future (2022)
The year is 2055, when a meteor carrying a destructive plant strikes the world, a suicide squad is given hours to save their post-apocalyptic city from total collapse. There is a catch-22 though, the military has been relying on robots.
Warriors of Future (2022) Movie Review
A rather entertaining movie, with acceptable special effects, and a script that does not lack humor.
Its director, Yuen Fai Ng, with his creative background in the special effects world, knows how to make good use of his know-how.
Do not expect profundity in the characterizations, as this is pure action. The acting and the script are not particularly convincing, but it is nevertheless an amusing number.

"This is an unprecedented operation." Whoa!! There's a Hong Kong sci-fi action movie called Warriors of Future that has finally opened in theaters in China and Hong Kong this summer. It was being prepped for release in 2019, with an early trailer dropping years ago. But after all the pandemic delays and lockdowns, it's only being released now. Set in the year 2055, a meteorite brings an extraterrestrial to the Earth in the form of an alien vine that "purifies the planet but kills everything in its path." (Is this anti-climate change propaganda?) When powerful alien creatures threaten humanity, Cmmdr. Sing Lee's elite forces are almost wiped out, and the surviving soldier Tai Loi discovers an even bigger conspiracy. Starring Louis Koo, Sean Lau, Carina Lau, Philip Keung, Tse Kwan-ho, and Nick Cheung. This looks Extra epic, from a VFX supervisor making his directorial debut. It's even being marketed as the...

It is fairly obvious where Running Out Of Time is drawing it major inspiration from. Michael Mann’s Heat pre-dates it by just a few years and the central relationship, while...

Inspector Ho (Ching Wan Lau) is assigned to the case, and he and Leung develop a relationship of respect as adversaries.

Hong Kong crime thriller Detective vs. Sleuths surged to the top of China’s box office in its second weekend of release, earning 18.4 million. Chinese hitmaker Chen Sicheng’s much anticipated sci-fi comedy Mozart From Space, meanwhile, made a disappointing start in second place, taking 16.6 million.
Slipping just 20 percent from its opening frame, Detective vs. Sleuths has earned 58.8 million since its opening July 8. With the summer holiday now underway, ticketing app Maoyan projects the film to finish with a healthy 110 million haul.
Produced by Emperor Motion Pictures, the film tells the story of a police detective (Sean Lau) pushed into retirement because of a mental breakdown who begins his own investigation into a string of crimes perpetrated by a serial killer known as “The Sleuth.” The film is directed by Ka-Fai Wai, best known as the writer of Johnnie To’s Hong Kong crime classic,...

Hong Kong-produced crime action film “Detective Vs Sleuths” took top honors at the mainland China box office in its second weekend of release. New release title, ‘Mozart From Space” came in a disappointing second.
“Detective Vs Sleuths” earned 18.4 million (RMB123 million) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. That was only a 20 drop compared with its opening weekend and advances it to a 10-day cumulative of 58.8 million.
The film involves Wai Ka-fai, a writer-director who is also a longtime Johnnie To collaborator, re-team with actor Sean Lau (aka Lau Ching-wan), the star of 2007’s “Mad Detective.” The tale sees Lau as a retired and stressed-out former cop on the trail of a serial killer, who appears to be tidying up loose ends in a series of cold cases.

Hong Kong-made crime action film “Detective Vs Sleuths” earned a solid 23.1 million (RMB155 million) in its opening at the mainland China box office, but it was unable to dislodge sentimental local drama film “Lighting Up the Stars” from a third weekend win.
Nevertheless, having two Chinese-language films going strongly raised the nationwide box office total above 61 million. That was the highest weekend score since the Chinese New Year high in February, which occurred before the current Covid wave in China. Further cinema re-openings likely also helped.
“Lighting Up the Stars” earned 27.7 million (RMB186) between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. That was a 38 drop compared with its second weekend. And after three weekends in cinemas, it has accumulated 177 million (RMB1.19 million).

Within the filmography of perhaps Hong Kong’s most prolific directors, Johnnie To, the year 2011 proved once again his ability to switch between genres and tones effortlessly. The romantic comedy “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, co-directed by Wai Ka-Fai, was followed by “Punished”, a crime thriller in a similar vein like the ones To had directed just a few years prior, and finally, “Life Without Principle”, a crime drama which would take a closer look at the effects of economic destabilization. In an interview with the French press, To states he perceives the people working in finance, most specifically those higher up in the food chain, as even worse than the infamous Chinese triads, abusing their power and exploiting, with no one in sight to end their doings. Even though it was something of a diversion from his other works, “Life Without Principle” would win big at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival,...

‘The Heroic Mission’ is named and inspired by two titles of To’s films during the 90s: The Heroic Trio (1992) and The Mission (1998). The imagery of ‘hero’ created by To in most of his films represents a fated statement: ‘We all came with a mission’. Influenced by the film directors King Hu, Sam Peckinpah and Akira Kurosawa, To enjoyed his international breakthrough with a film noir signature and gangster films. To specialises in angling at different characters in daily life and portraying their inner struggles and conflicts between desire and making choices. To once said, ‘I can see two to three faces of a person.’ Three films have been selected in this programme and each tells a different story about heroism.

Andy Lau plays a bomb-disposal officer in this old-school action thriller with tricksy, Infernal Affairs-esque storytelling
The “2” in the original title of this film would suggest this Hong Kong-action thriller is a sequel – or more likely a prequel given its ending – to the 2017 film Shock Wave, which like this starred megastar Andy Lau and was directed by one of his regular collaborators, Herman Yau. In fact, there’s no connective narrative tissue at all between the films, apart from the fact that the hero in both works for the Hong Kong police department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Eod) bureau, or bomb disposal unit. Still, the end result offers a regular drumbeat of suspense-followed-by-explosion throughout – one long tick-tick-boom symphony, in fact – which makes for fitfully stimulating entertainment.
Lau plays Poon Sing-fung, the Eod’s most reckless yet heroic debomber, who is best friends with his superior, Tung (Ching Wan Lau), and...

After suffering life changing injuries in the line of duty, bomb disposal officer Poon Shing Fung turns his back on the police. But when a devastating series of bombings sweep Hong Kong, the police suspect their former ally may be involved after he is found unconscious at a crime scene. Now faced with memory loss and recalling only fragments of his former life, Fung sets out to uncover the truth and find out who he really is.
Opening with the massive destruction of Hong Kong airport, complete with flesh burned off skeletons, and a blast of the nuclear variety, Shock Wave: Hong Kong Destruction kicks off with a literal bang. This is no sequel to the original though. Oh no.

Although continuously snubbed by critics and festivals, action movies still retain their popularity among mainstream audiences in particular, while a number of them frequently cross towards the cult category. The golden age of these movies, which parallels the pick of Hong Kong cinema and particularly of companies like Shaw Brothers, Golden Harvest and Milkyway Image, is long since gone. However, excellent productions continue to be released every year, with the scepters having been passed on to the Asean countries, particularly after the immense success of “The Raid”, which essentially kick-started a whole trend. At the same time, China/Hong Kong and S. Korea continue to release blockbusters of the category, while Japan always has the anime/manga adaptations, which frequently prove quite successful.

Johnnie To’s first directorial work for Milkyway Images was not a financial success, as was the case with many of the first productions of the then newly instituted company. However, as years passed, the artistic value of “A Hero Never Dies” was eventually recognized and it is now considered a Hk action classic.
The story revolves around two hardcore rivals, Jack and Martin, who are the top henchmen of two opposing triads in the middle of a gang war. As is usual the case with such intense rivalries, the two opponents are quite similar. They are both good looking, brave and bold to a fault, relentless, bad-mouthed, frequent the same bar, love good wine, have gorgeous girlfriends who have accepted being with gangsters, are excellent shooters, and they enjoy shooting the legs of a man who is supposed to be an even bigger boss than their own.

“The Longest Nite” was quite a difficult film to produce, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was shot during the chaos that followed the financial crisis in Hong Kong, since in 1998, the country recorded negative growth in all four quarters and a decline in Gdp of 5.1% over 1997. The unemployment rate more than doubled, from 2.5% in late 1997 to 5.7% in late 1998. Apart from the general situation, Patrick Yau, who was initially tasked with directing the film, hit a creative wall after shooting just five scenes. Johnnie To took over in his stead, and writer Wa Ka-fai had to rewrite the script as they were shooting. The result is chaotic, but impressive.

Featuring Sammo Hung as the action director, Benny Chan as the director, Ching Wan Lau, Wu Jing and Louis Koo as the protagonists and with a budget of $32 million, “Call of Heroes” was bound to be an action blockbuster. To my surprise, however, it managed to be even more.
The film starts with a kindergarten teacher escorting a bunch of ragtag children in a restaurant, where she orders a single bowl of food for all of them to share. A few moments later, some thugs try to rob the establishment, only to experience a humiliating beating in the hands of a peculiar individual named Ma Feng.
After that scene, the film changes setting and places the story in Pucheng, a small town that has sent its army to the front and is virtually unguarded, with the only ones that can fight being the local sheriff, Yeung Hak-nan and his team.

"Hope, Believe." One Cool Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for a crazy cool new epic sci-fi movie from Hong Kong, tilted Warriors of Future, an ambitious directorial debut of VFX veteran Yuen Fai Ng. Set in the near future, the plot involves an alien vine that takes over the city after crashing down to earth. An experienced military team tries to go in and take it down, using heavily armored aircraft and big mech-type suits and robots. This is clearly just a firs teaser, since the movie isn't supposed to be out until 2019 because it has so much VFX in it, but damn it's slick. Warriors of Future stars Louis Koo and Ching Wan Lau. I really want to see more of this, but the first tease looks awesome, I have to say. It looks hugely epic, and the trailer is quite emotional with a killer score. I'm...

A prominent commercial filmmaker in Hong Kong since the mid-80s, the career path and status of Johnnie To is distinctive from contemporaries such as John Woo, Tsui Hark, and Wong Kar-wai. Solely committed to his national cinema, he made a point of never venturing to Hollywood and even formed his own production company, Milkyway Image, in 1996. Only in the mid-2000s when films like Breaking News (2005) and Election (2006) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival was Johnnie To given auteur consideration by Western critics and audiences. Even then, it was only his crime and action genre work, characterized by their elegant style and directorial control, that found critical success and was seen as commercially viable for international markets. With over 50 features under his belt, Johnnie To has a massive oeuvre not bound to any single mode and while he is one of contemporary cinema’s greatest formalist filmmakers, his fluency in visual storytelling transcends genre.

Well Go USA released the long awaited sequel, Cold War 2, on Blu-ray and DVD March 7, 2017. It is one of the best good versus bad flicks that I have seen in a while. Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung, Eddie Peng and Chow Yun Fat play for blood in the dirty world of politics.
They’re conniving, ruthless and intelligent; and that’s just the good guys!
Aaron Kwok returns again as Sean Lau, now promoted to the role of Commissioner of Police. When his wife becomes a pawn in the ongoing fight, Lau makes a decision that opens the flood gates of hell, giving his enemies all the ammo they need to take him out.
To their surprise, Lau isn’t an easy target. He is brilliant and strategic, even using their own players again them. Counter move after move leaves them shook. When Chow Yun Fat graces the screen, his charisma is on full blast.

From traditional martial arts arse-kicking, to fast and furious swordplay, with wire work which does Not look fake and is used sparingly to emphasise the films fight scenes rather than be the centre of attention – unlike Crouching Tiger for example – Call of Heroes is a modern-day wuxia classic. One of the year’s most anticipated films opened this week in a handful of theatres across North America: Hong Kong director Ringo Lam’s Sky on Fire. After his promisingly solid return to directing after more than a decade in retirement with last year’s Wild City, hopes were high for the new film, if only because it shares the title formulation of some of his greatest works: City on Fire, School on Fire and the two Prison on Fire films. With Daniel Wu starring in a story of greed and corruption in the medical industry, it promised to be a worthy addition to the career of one of Hong Kong’s most distinguished directors, a man whose bleak tales of institutional collapse provided some of the most viscerally kinetic and apocalyptic visions of the colony in the years between the 1984 Joint Declaration and the 1997 Handover. Instead, it’s a mess,...

For fans of Far East action, be it bullet-ballets, martial art epics or heroic bloodshed films, the name Cine Asia used to mean a Lot. The action-packed, martial arts film, “Call of Heroes” is coming to Blu-Ray and DVD on November 8 and December 6, 2016 respectively, from WellGo USA. “Call of Heroes” is a star-studded film by Benny Chan, an award winning director, who is well known for his pieces “Shaolin,” and “New Police Story.”
“Call of Heroes” stars Sean Lau (from “Mad Detective”), Louis Koo (“Drug War”), Eddie Peng (“Cold War 2”), and Wu Jing (“Shaolin”).
The plot of “Call of Heroes” centers around Koo, who plays Cao, son of a war General, who as an adult becomes a dangerous warlord. Cao is later accused of committing three murders, and his father vows he will take vengeance on the city if his son is sentenced to death. Because Cao is undeniably guilty, the citizens of the town decide to take action and bring justice to this cruel man.

Benny Chan (Invisible Target, Shaolin) directed and the great Sammo Hung served as action director, choreographing multiple sequences that are truly stunning to behold. Lau Ching Wan (aka Sean Lau) stars as the sheriff of a rural village and the only true voice for law and order, and...
