Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders series six episode six “Lock and Key”.
It’s almost two years since Tommy Shelby disappeared over the horizon on a white horse, having dismantled the life he’d spent over a decade building through blood and strategising. Where Cillian Murphy’s character rode to after the credits rolled on Peaky Blinders finale “Lock and Key” is anybody’s guess, a question mark that Murphy adores.
Speaking to Lauren Laverne for BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs a month before the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony, Murphy – who received a Best Actor nomination for Oppenheimer – praised Peaky Blinders’ inconclusive finale, telling Laverne: “I felt like we’d done such excellent work and I really loved the ambiguity of the ending.”
Leaving behind the character of Tommy Shelby, Murphy continued, “was a little bit of a relief at that point. I was ready to take a little break.

In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.
Good for Richard Osman, it all seems to be very going well for him. But for Pointless?
Taking its cue from satirical current affairs show Have I Got News For You?, which settled on a revolving carousel of guest hosts when its regular host Angus Deayton was forced to step down instead of plumping for a permanent chair, Pointless has welcomed a series of co-hosts in the past couple of years.

Save the Children's annual Winter Gala returned last week with guests spotted walking along the Yellow Brick Road into the Emerald City at London’s Guildhall for a Wonderful Wizard of Oz-themed night of festivities.
The gala was hosted by radio and TV presenter Lauren Laverne and attended by more than 270 guests including Save the Children supporters and ambassadors such as Poppy Delevingne, Dom Joly, Misan Harriman, Erin O’Connor, Ashley Jensen and DJ Cuppy. The night raised more than £700,000 for the charity through sponsorship, table sales, pledges, and the sale of some truly unique silent auction items, including a signed guitar from Ed Sheeran.
As attendees arrived, they walked through Dorothy’s upside-down house and into ‘Munchkinland’ in the crypts of the Guildhall for a drink’s reception, before following the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City of the Great Hall for the evening’s fundraising and entertainment.

Hull based shoegaze quartet bdrmm return with a new single titled “Mud”. The track arrives hot on the heels of the bands widely lauded second album “I Don’t Know”, which came out earlier this year on Mogwai’s Rock Action label.
The post-shoegaze, dream pop, heavy guitar effects quartet’s latest album arrived in late-June to critical acclaim with the likes of Consequence calling it “one of their most enticing successes yet” and Rolling Stone UK describing it as “a chaotic, thrilling evolution”. The lead single “It’s Just A Bit Of Blood” was also playlisted on BBC Radio 6 Music, and Brooklyn Vegan made the record their Album Of The Week saying that “I Don’t Know” saw them “not only avoid the sophomore slump, but deliver a second album that is miles better their debut.”

It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.
When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

The release of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” in 1975 had a massive effect on popular culture, establishing the concept of the Hollywood summer blockbuster and remaining a prime target for parody to this day. One of its more unfortunate legacies, however, is how its depiction of the great white shark as a ferocious man-eating animal has endured, leading to increased hunting against the species for decades. And it’s a legacy that the director himself isn’t proud of at all.
“I truly and to this day regret the decimation of the shark population because of the book and the film,” the “Fabelmans” director said during a recent interview on the BBC Radio 4 show “Desert Island Discs” (via Entertainment Weekly). “I really, truly regret that.”
On “Desert Island Discs,” host Lauren Laverne asks guests to choose eight recordings, a book, and a luxury item with which to be stranded on a deserted island.

Richard Osman has feigned outrage over the fact that the laptop in the Pointless studio actually works.

Adele returned to the stage this weekend for her first concerts of the 30 era, but in a new interview with BBC 4 Radio, her mind was still on the shows she didn’t perform: The last-minute postponement of her Las Vegas residency.
“I definitely felt everyone’s disappointment and I was devastated and I was frightened about letting them down,” Adele told Desert Island Discs host Lauren Laverne of the postponed Weekends With Adele residency.
“I thought I could pull it together and make it work and I couldn’t, and I stand by that decision.

Sherlock season 4 hasn’t gone down as the fandom’s favorite run, and it sounds like it wasn’t the best experience for one of the show’s stars, either. John Watson himself, Martin Freeman, has admitted that filming on the possibly final outing of the hit BBC detective series “wasn’t that much fun” as he was experiencing a tumultuous time in his personal life at that point.
Speaking with BBC Radio 4’s Lauren Laverne on Desert Island Discs, Freeman opened up about his split from longtime partner Amanda Abbington back in 2016. Abbington, of course, also starred on Sherlock as John’s wife Mary. This naturally made shooting episodes together while they had actual personal drama in their home life difficult. However, the actor also stressed that typically his experience working with Abbington was “great.”

The British public broadcaster is developing the format, which will see celebrities invited to take a “sideways swipe” at the big issues facing Britain today. Topical given what’s been going on with Brexit this week.
Deadline understands that the BBC is piloting the project with a recording set to take place next week at the Hospital Club in London. The BBC has said that the show is the “first of its kind on TV” and that it will bring together cutting-edge technology with top celebrities.
However, rather than chat with an A-list host, the guests will jostle with “one of the most famous leaders in the world”.

It is both extremely exciting and utterly depressing to know Westworld’s second season is coming to an end.
The brilliant tale of a futuristic theme park and its emerging artificially intelligent life forms is providing us with film-level quality in every aspect of the production, but the maddeningly confusing and intricate plot threads have us craving a resolution – we just want to know what the hell is going on.
Having attended a recent premiere screening of the season two finale (and without posting a single spoiler), we can confirm that (nearly) all of your questions will indeed be answered. And that the organisers – Sky Atlantic – really skimped on the free ‘gunsmoke’ flavoured crisps.
Not only were we lucky enough to see the show on a cinema screen, we also got to listen to a Q&A with the show’s producers, Lisa Joy and husband Jonathan Nolan (who presumably...

The growing trend for film-makers to discuss their work with the audience after a screening is ruining the cinemagoing experience. Please make it stop!
There is a disease in the heart of cinema, and that disease is the Q&A. More cinemas are putting them on than ever, partly as a response to the rise of online streaming, in order to “add value” to their offering – and audiences are lapping it up. Q&As with directors and cast sell out in minutes to people consumed with a burning impulse to ask why there are no nice characters in the movie, or what it was like to film all those hot scenes. Why? Who would willingly put themselves through this hell? When will we wake from this nightmare?
Imagine if other art forms enacted the same depressing, bathetic rituals as film-makers do with the Q&A. If, at the end of a gig,...

Electronic music mastermind Aphex Twin has shared two more songs from his upcoming Cheetah Ep, debuting “CHEETAH7B” on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, while “2X202-TS5” was premiered on Lauren Laverne’s BBC Radio 6 program.
“CHEETAH7B” is a subdued number, featuring a minimalist production with a simple four on the floor beat, ghostly synths and a consistent bass sequence. The seven minute long track evokes the repetitive nature of Aphex Twin’s early ambient techno work, as the producer slowly introduces new layers throughout its lengthy run time. “2X202-TS5” is a bit more upbeat, featuring old school drum machine beats, warbly synth pads, and a bouncy bassline. You can listen to “2X202-TS5” here, around the 1:56:00 mark.
Stylistically, Aphex Twin seems to be drawing on his older material, working in his signature acid house and ambient techno sound palettes while expanding on the sound of his last album Syro.

Ahead of the home entertainment release of Cuban Fury this week, HeyUGuys sat down with its star Nick Frost – who also came up with the idea for the film – about any memorable reactions, mementos from the set, improvised scenes and more…
The film has obviously been out for a while now. Has there been any reaction that has been particularly memorable?
I think people had lots and lots of Twitter traffic from people saying that dancing had broken out in screenings and people saying that there’d been a flash mob of salsa dancers! Is there a deeper meaning about aesthetic beauty in the film? Maybe, but essentially the film is about love and dancing. If even a thousand people came out of that cinema feeling happy, it’s a win.
In Cuban Fury, Bruce discovers what he wants to do with his life at a very early age. When...

Black Mirror could return to Channel 4 later this year.
Channel 4's head of comedy Phil Clarke told Radio Times that he hopes to have a Black Mirror one-off film to transmit in late 2014.
A full series - comprised of the traditional three episodes - would then follow in 2015.
"That is definitely the hope," said Clarke. "Though of course a lot depends on whether Charlie Brooker finds the time to do them."
Brooker - creator and chief writer of the series - revealed last month that fans could expect two "helpings" of Black Mirror in the near future.
"There will be more - I don't think I'm allowed to say quite when," he told Lauren Laverne on her BBC Radio 6Music show.
"There's going to be some and then there's going to be some more - you'll get one helping and then there'll be another helping."

The British techno-anxiety anthology series "Black Mirror" was one of the best things to sneak onto U.S. television last year (via DirecTV's Audience Network) -- check out our review here. The series originally ran for two three-episode seasons on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013, and now creator Charlie Brooker has promised that at least two more episodes are on the way. Brooker broke the news on a BBC Radio show hosted by Lauren Laverne, saying "There will be more -- I don't think I'm allowed to say quite when. There's going to be some and then there's going to be some more -- you'll get one helping and then there'll be another helping." Brooker, who also created the zombie series "Dead Set" and wrote episodes of "Brass Eye," "The 11 O'Clock Show" and "Nathan Barley," currently hosts BBC Two series "Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe."
