The year’s shortest month gets the biggest bang as Severin Films today announced their February 27th releases featuring uncensored 4K restorations of the infamous 1960’s western ‘roughies’ from the depraved minds of exploitation legends Bob Cresse and Lee Frost, Hot Spur and Scavengers.
‘“The Kings of esoteric boutique companies” (Video WatchBlog) are also proud to release – because Severin co-founder/president David Gregory considers it one of the best films he saw as a jury member at the FrightFest and Sitges Film Festivals – the North American disc premiere of director/co-writer Andrew Legge’s time-travel mind-bender, Lola.
Previous limited edition title Spider Labyrinth also enters wide release.
Here’s everything you need to know about Severin’s February 2024 lineup…

Having struck gold with shockumentaries like Ecco and Mondo Bizarro, producer Bob Cresse and writer/director Lee Frost applied their distinctive sleaze aesthetic to a revenge western they advertised as “91 minutes of Freudian fury!

Dark Sky Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Lola, the science fiction drama from writer-director Andrew Legge and starring Stefanie Martini (Prime Suspect 73, The Last Kingdom) and Emma Appleton (The Witcher, Pistol). The film will be released in early August.
Giles Edwards, head of development and acquisitions at Dark Sky Films, is currently on the ground in Cannes and negotiated the distribution agreement with Yana Georgieva, head of sales for Bankside Films.
Lola is set in 1940 in England, where enterprising sisters Thomasina “Thom” Hanbury (Appleton) and Martha “Mars” Hanbury (Martini) have built a machine, Lola, that can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. The device gives them an exciting preview of the world to come, including music by the likes of David Bowie and the Kinks. But with World War II escalating, the sisters decide to use the machine as a weapon of intelligence, with world-altering consequences.

Swapping child-snatching demons for Irish folklore, Sinister 2 director Ciaran Foy is poised to continue his successful working relationship with Blumhouse for The Shee, a supernatural thriller set on the Emerald Isle circa 1960.
According to the report, the core story of the film will center on “a troubled young woman who must confront her violent and tragic past when she travels to a remote island.” Given the title and premise, we expect that Foy’s new feature will involve Elven mythology – and, specifically, the aos sí – in some capacity, with The Shee indicating that the film’s moniker could be an abbreviated version of Banshee, one of the dark and dangerous supernatural entities lurking beneath the Irish soil.
After making his feature debut with 2012’s low-key hit The Citadel, Foy was recruited to helm Sinister 2 - which opens on Friday, August 21 – after impressing Jason Blum’s prolific, horror-centric production company.

Ciarán Foy will transition from the frightening farmyard of Sinister 2 to a haunted Irish island in his next feature film, The Shee.
Variety reports that Foy (Citadel) will direct The Shee, a film produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse, Alan Maher from Roads Entertainment, and Foy via Shadow Aspect.
The Shee "centers on a troubled young woman who has to deal with her tragic past on a remote island." Also known as aos sí, the shee are supernatural entities akin to elves that, according to Irish mythology, can exist in an invisible realm within our world as well as under the surface of the Earth. It's not yet known what type of take on the shee Foy will explore in his upcoming film, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further details.

Following his debut British indie horror Citadel, director Ciarán Foy was headhunted by Scott Derrickson to direct Sinister 2. It was clearly a happy arrangement for all concerned, since he's staying with Jason Blum's prolific production company Blumhouse for his next project: an "elevated thriller" called The Shee. The story takes place in Ireland in the 1960s, where a troubled young woman is forced to face up to violent incidents from her troubled past when she travels to a remote island. We might surmise that the "Shee" are the aes sídhe: the elven folk from Irish mythology who can be dangerous and terrible if they're not appeased. Is "Shee" a contraction of "Banshee"? We'll find out...Foy has form here, having directed the award-winning short The Faeries Of Blackheath Woods in 2006. With Corin Hardy's The Hallow also incoming, it's suddenly a boom time for the mischievous fair folk.

Asquith said: “My grandmother suffered an appalling injustice at the hands of the Catholic church, being forced to give up her baby after a secret pregnancy she dared tell no-one in her family about.

The International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival (Iprhff) kicks off Wednesday Nov. 13th in Nueva York City celebrating the best in Boricua filmmaking. Opening with crowd-pleaser El Clown, Iprhff started just 3 years ago to pay tribute to the legacy of Puerto Ricans, they have a steady roster of films showcasing “pioneering, historically significant films and documentaries, contemporary shorts and features, and other innovative films”. This years spokesperson is no other Rockaway Beach native, Lauren Velez (Dexter). While the festival is still in its young stages and some of these films have been in release (and some shot years ago) it's still a treat for those yet to discover them. LatinoBuzz picked out some of our faves.
Babygirl, (81 minutes)
Director: Macdara Vallely
Producer: Alan Maher, R. Paul Miller, Felix Werner, Kathrin Werner
Set in the Bronx, Babygirl is a bitter-sweet drama about teenager Lena who, since she can remember, has watched her mom Lucy squander her life on a series of deadbeat men. When Victor, her mom’s latest boy toy, starts hitting on her Lena sets up an elaborate honey-trap, hoping to show her mom what a scumbag the guy really is. But the plan backfires. Trapped in a twisted love-triangle between Victor and her mom, Lena finally realizes that the only way out is to stand up and finally confront some difficult home truths. Baby girl premiered at last years Tribeca where lead actress Yainis Ynoa was greatly acclaimed but oddly enough the film didn't get the festival attention it deserved, it did get a limited release.

El Clown , (105 minutes)
Director: Pedro Adorno, Emilio Rodriguez
Producer: Emilio Rodriguez
El Clown, Emilio Rodriguez and Pedro Adorno’s tale of a circus clown’s rise to stardom as a pitchman, tracks the erosion of creativity through corporate branding with a healthy dose of absurdism. Pic’s sly portrait of the artist as a conflicted clown is rich in the meticulous craftsmanship it celebrates, its consummate slapstick deflating any overwrought Pagliacci operatics or facile art-vs.-commerce preciousness. Intelligent crowd-pleaser reps a rousing triumph for the burgeoning Puerto Rican film industry and, with savvy handling, could conjure a niche for itself under the indie big top. —Variety

Machetero , (99 minutes)
Director: Vagabond Beaumont
Producer: Vagabond Beaumont
Post 9/11 definitions, ideas and notions of terrorism are challenged in this highly controversial and experimental film. Machetero is an allegorical narrative that follows French journalist Jean Dumont played by Isaach de Bankolé (The Keeper, Ghost Dog, Coffee and Cigarettes, Mandalay) to a New York prison where he interviews Pedro Taino a so called “Puerto Rican Terrorist” played by Not4Prophet (lead singer of the Puerto Punk band Ricanstruction). Pedro is a self-described Machetero fighting to free Puerto Rico from the yoke of United States colonialism. He is obsessed with freedom, freedom for his country, his people and for himself. Jean questions Pedro about his decisions to use violence as a means to achieve that freedom. As Jean and Pedro speak, another story unfolds. A ghetto youth played by Kelvin Fernandez (in his first starring role) grows up in the ghetto streets and crosses paths with Pedro. Follow the internet trail to socialistworld.net and you’ll find an article from 2003 entitled “Free the Bin Tax Twelve.” The article is about the arrest of 10 new protesters during a movement to resist a double tax on waste collection in Irish cities that placed its largest burden on poor residential areas. One of those protesters was the mother of a baby still being breastfed; meet the wife of Terry McMahon, director Charlie Casanova, which premiered this year at SXSW.
…I’m angry that my daughter went to prison when she was a baby to be breastfed. And I’m angry that in twenty years’ time, or thirty years’ time when she comes back to me and asks ‘Dad, what did you do?’ The least I can do is say, ‘well I tried to make a film that was about it, cause I was a eunuch and a whore and could do fuck all else.
