Natalie Bailey with her Emmy.
Natalie Bailey was set to shoot feature comedy Sumo in South Africa when the pandemic struck, which turned out to be a blessing as she was then asked to serve as set-up director on Aquarius Films’ Sbs miniseries The Unusual Suspects.
The Melbourne-based director, who shot isolation comedy Retrograde for the ABC, readily agreed. She had long wanted to make a 4-parter for Sbs and she was intrigued by the story of immigrants working in Sydney’s affluent Eastern suburbs with strong female characters.
Scripted by Jessica Redenbach, Roger Monk and Vonne Patiag, the plot revolves around the theft of a $10 million necklace from self-made Filipino businesswoman Roxanne Waters’ home during her twins’ birthday party. The suspects include socialite Sara Beasley whose life is crumbling fast, and her long-suffering nanny, Evie De La Rosa, a godmother for other Filipino domestic workers.

Andrea Denholm.
The restructure of Princess Pictures is nearing completion with the pending departures of producer/partner Andrea Denholm and MD Jenni Tosi.
Denholm finishes up this Friday after 10 years with the production company founded by Laura Waters in 2003.
Tosi, the former Film Victoria CEO who joined a year ago, will depart in mid-November after handing the reins to commercial director and partner Emma Fitzsimons.
These moves follow the exit earlier this year of producer/partner Paul Walton after seven years with Princess Pictures.
The final elements of the revamp are expected to entail an injection of fresh blood. Waters tells If: “These changes have happened organically. I’m quite buoyant about the future: there are exciting things ahead.”

Princess Pictures founder/producer Laura Waters and MD Jenni Tosi have repositioned the production company.
Facing two choices – continue to expand or to consolidate – they chose the latter. “Reviewing our structure and business strategy has been such a healthy process,” Waters, who founded the company in 2003, tells If. “It’s made us go back to our roots and our original purpose. I am feeling re-energised about the company.
“We are passionate and hands-on about unique projects and finding new ways of working with international and local partners.”
The company’s slate includes the second season of Network 10’s How to Stay Married, a co-production with Pablo Pictures, which is in the final stages of financing. Created by Peter Helliar, the first series followed Helliar and Lisa McCune as Greg and Em Butler, who had been married for 14 years and whose lives take unexpected turns after...

Lust, Actually: Lawson’s Sexually Charged Debut Struggles with What Women Want
Taking home the audience prize at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, Australian director Josh Lawson makes some decidedly risqué choices with his debut, The Little Death, which is basically an omnibus of alternative sexual practices rarely explored in the cinematic arena of the heterosexual. Mostly motivated by the complicated and sometimes controversial secret desires of women, the film, taking its name from the French idiom for orgasm, is sometimes refreshingly blunt as it navigates through several scenarios. However, it is just as often silly and unsubstantial, with an undefined purpose setting in as we close with an unseemly end to the common thread.
Maeve (Bojana Novakovic) and her boyfriend Paul (Lawson) set us off on in the circle. She’s getting her feet sucked, but confides after their bout of lovemaking her real fantasy involves being raped. Except she...

The Little Death
Written and directed by Josh Lawson
Australia, 2014
The Little Death is an Australian comedy concerning five hetero couples (or potential couple in one case), whose relationships become defined by their fetishes. Though the lives of some of these characters intertwine through the setup of them living in the same neighbourhood, the film is more anthology feature than network narrative in that the stories basically act as shorts that we jump in and out of for 95 minutes – and one of them runs uninterrupted for the final 20. Writer-director Josh Lawson even introduces each plot thread with a title card akin to what you might find in a more traditional anthology feature. This isn’t so much The ABCs of Sex, but the title of recent Argentinean anthology Wild Tales wouldn’t be out of place if re-applied to The Little Death.
Lawson definitely tries to be wild, anyway. His...

The good news for the producers of The Little Death is more than 160,000 people have watched the sex comedy online in the past few days. The bad news is that very few actually paid for it. After being released on DVD last Friday, Josh Lawson.s directorial debut is the third most downloaded title in Australia, according to kickass torrents. In just two days the film, which grossed $308,000 in Australia, has been downloaded more than 160,000 times. Only Clint Eastwood.s American Sniper (which opened last Thursday) and Chris Nolan.s Interstellar are more popular. In illegal downloads The Little Death is tracking ahead of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Birdman, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, The Imitation Game and Gone Girl. .It.s incredible to see this kind of demand and audience but it certainly highlights the ongoing problem we have with piracy.

Josh Lawson.s The Little Death generated a tonne of media coverage and mostly favourable reviews after selling to the Us and multiple other territories- so why haven.t Australian audiences been more aroused by the sexy comedy?
That question is being debated after the saga of the secret sex lives of five Sydney couples rang up $77,700 at 34 screens last weekend and $83,500 with previews. The omens had seemed far more positive after the world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival, where it came second in the voting for audience award for best feature, and the responses from audiences and buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival. Writer-director Lawson and distributor eOne worked tirelessly to promote the comedy whose ensemble cast includes Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman, Kate Mulvany, Lisa McCune, Patrick Brammall, Lachy Hulme and Lawson. .Obviously we're all disappointed with the opening weekend results but we think it will grow,...

That.s Magnolia.s second Oz pick-up this week following the deal for Kriv Stenders. comedy-thriller Kill Me Three Times.

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.

Aacta.s decision this year to combine the best TV comedy and best light entertainment series into one category has drawn fire from some of the leading lights of the comedy business.
Actor/director Josh Lawson describes the move as .baffling and insulting for both categories. and complains there is only one category for acting- best performance in a TV comedy- compared with four for acting in TV dramas. .What are we to take away from this - that comedy is somehow easier? That people who work on comedies don't work as hard? That actors who do comedy aren't as talented or as deserving of accolades,. asks Lawson, who stars in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (which opens in Australia on December 19) and in Us thriller Crave (which launches in the Us on Friday). .What a slap in the face for all the hard working, incredibly talented Australians who work...

Even Australia’s conquerors of Hollywood had to start somewhere. Usually in an embarrassing ad on the TV. We had a rummage through Australia’s biggest advertising library – Ebiquity’s archive that goes back to 1981 – to dig out the parts of Aussie celebs’ careers they’d probably wish had quietly been forgotten.

No doubt Australian morning show host Kerri-Anne Kennerley has been enjoying sleeping-in since her long-running show was given the axe from Channel Nine late last year.
But now the bubbly TV presenter is back with a new timeslot, a new show and importantly, a new network.
The host of Kerri-Anne (formerly Mornings with Kerri-Anne) for almost a decade, Kennerley has joined rival Channel Seven, after she was famously replaced by Sonia Kruger.
In what is a big coup for Channel Seven, she will front a new primetime project later in the year, but the details remain sketchy. In media interviews, she said however that it wouldn't be an interview show.
It's also been announced that she will be the first contestant on a new series of ratings juggernaut, Dancing With The Stars.
A statement, issued yesterday morning, said Kennerley would also feature across some of the network.s established shows.
