A new heavyweight is about to make a splash in the unscripted ring.
Canadian production-distribution powerhouse Blue Ant Media, the producers of “Canada’s Drag Race,” has acquired “Blown Away” outfit MarbleMedia — a deal that merges two of Canada’s most global-facing industry players.
The acquisition sees Toronto-headquartered Blue Ant Media merge its production and distribution operations with MarbleMedia into one studio and rights business. Blue Ant Media boss Michael MacMillan, the former CEO of Alliance Atlantis, tells Variety that discussions have taken place for around a year. “Neither company needed to do this,” he says, “but it seemed like a really smart idea for us all.”

This month, Peacock is revisiting one of the most notorious trials of the 2010s with “Where the Truth Lies,” a limited series exploring the 2011 trial of Casey Anthony. The streamer released the first trailer for the three-part docuseries, which premieres November 29.
In 2008, police arrested Anthony for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, who was reported missing by her grandmother. Shortly after, Caylee’s remains were found inside a laundry bag in the woods near the Anthonys’ house. After a widely publicized trial where Anthony chose not to testify, a jury found her not guilty in 2011, prompting widespread backlash and outrage in the media.
“Where the Truth Lies” features extensive sitdowns with Anthony, speaking on the record for the first time. The interviews will explore Anthony’s account of the investigation, the trial and its aftermath. The series also features never-before-seen footage from the trial and insights into the defense’s evidence.

“Why talk to me now when you’re not getting creative control?” an interviewer asks Anthony in the trailer. The brief footage concludes with the intertitle, “Casey Anthony Speaks.”
“Where the Truth Lies” will debut on Peacock on Nov. 29. The three-part limited series, helmed by director and showrunner Alexandra Dean, features material from Casey’s own archive and behind-the-scenes footage.
“Since her acquittal in 2011, public opinion of Casey Anthony has been largely shaped by the media convinced of her guilt,” Dean said in a statement. “What emerges over the course of multiple interviews recorded over six months is a startling psychological portrait of Casey Anthony and a complete narrative of what she says happened to her daughter weighed...

Prince Andrew is getting the documentary treatment at Peacock.
The streamer has released the trailer for Prince Andrew: Banished, a 90-minute documentary debuting Oct. 5 that will dive into the “tumultuous and complex” life of Prince Andrew. The feature includes interviews with palace insiders, journalists, and others who were close to the controversial relationship between Prince Andrew, Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein.
The disgraced second son to the late Queen Elizabeth II stepped down from royal duties over his association with the late child sex offender Epstein in November 2019. The decision, an unusual one for a senior royal, followed a televised BBC interview where he came under fire for how he clarified his ties with Epstein and was perceived as lacking sympathy for Epstein’s sex trafficking victims, many of whom were underage. As a result, he was stripped of his honorary military titles and charity roles,...

With British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell currently awaiting a November 2021 trial, facing charges that range from enticement of minors to sex trafficking of children in connection, the producers behind “Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell” feel the timing of that docuseries’ release could not be more perfect.
This is because they did not set out to capture the definitive story of her legal battles, but rather “to be the definitive documentary on who this woman is,” executive producer Emma Cooper explained at the Seriesfest panel for the three-part docuseries.
The docuseries doesn’t solely focus on Maxwell’s relationship with the titular Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who was arrested again (this time on charges of sex trafficking of minors) in 2019 and found dead in his jail cell just a month after that arrest. The two were in each other’s orbit for decades (though exactly how long may depend on who...

Congressman John Lewis is one the central figures in the early struggles of the American Civil Rights Movement that included bloody confrontations with white policemen, sit-ins, boycotts, widespread lynching of Black people, assassinations of prominent leaders, and culminating with marches in Selma, Al, and Washington, D.C. Lewis is now the subject of John Lewis: Good Trouble, a comprehensive new documentary directed by Dawn Porter.
John Lewis: Good Trouble is an alternately impressive, shocking, enraging, and motivating film that calls on everyone to do better in life. John Lewis is a legend, an icon, and an American pioneer. The combination of historical footage, interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, and trailing Mr. Lewis is a great balance over the span of the film. John Lewis has always been fighting for civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. He’s been doing it for over 60 years so to say that his narrative is relevant more now than ever is a wild understatement.
In the documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, director Dawn Porter chronicles Lewis’s life via interviews with the 80-year-old advocate who is just as active now as he was 60 years ago. Through rare archival footage, Porter puts a long-overdue spotlight on Lewis taking us on a journey through his childhood experiences, his inspiring family, his activism during the Civil Rights movement and his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957. We also get to hear from political leaders, his Congressional colleagues and those who have been with Lewis on his journey during his life and his career.

For decades, if you wanted to be a Hollywood cinematographer, you started as a film loader for a studio, feeding cameras all day with the raw stock needed to capture the next take. Then film went away, and so did film loaders. For this era’s digital cinematographers, the entry-level jobs are very different.
That’s just one aspect of the transformative changes facing all aspects of Hollywood right now. The question is whether the people who’ve relied on the industry’s once-stable verities can adapt to its fast-changing new realities. What’s happening is the biggest reset in Hollywood economics in at least 70 years, since TV arrived and the courts broke up the vertically integrated studio system.
To succeed in the New Hollywood will require wildly different skills, minus the job security and reliably high pay that Hollywood provided for so long to so many.

John Lewis, the civil rights icon and congressman from Georgia, will be the subject of an upcoming documentary from CNN Films.
Director Dawn Porter (“Gideon’s Army”) has already started shooting the project, following the Democratic congressman as he worked to flip the house in the 2018 mid-term elections. She also followed Lewis as he worked behind-the-scenes during the recent government shutdown and as the Democrats took control of the House. In addition to interviews with Lewis, Porter plans to rely on archival footage to chart Lewis’ social activism, as well as his career in Washington, where he has advocated for voting rights, gun control, and healthcare reform.
CNN Films will retain North American broadcast rights for the film. Other U.S. rights for the film, including theatrical distribution, are for sale. Agc Studios is co-financing and controls international rights that will be sold via its worldwide sales subsidiary, Agc International.

Tel Aviv-based sales agent Cinephil has taken international sales rights to high-concept doc “The Rossellinis,” which will provide a tongue-in-cheek autobiographical look at the descendants living around the world of iconic Italian director Roberto Rossellini’s extended family and is being directed by his grandson, Alessandro Rossellini.
“The Rossellinis,” which is being pitched at Rome’s Mia market, takes its cue from the uneasy legacy that the master auteur, who first galvanized global film buffs with “Rome Open City,” left on the progeny spawned by three wives — who include Ingrid Bergman of course — during the course of a glorious, albeit uneven, cinematic career that followed. Besides Ingrid Bergman, the other two women with whom Rossellini had kids were Italian production designer Marcella De Marchis and Indian screenwriter Sonali Das Gupta.
The extended Rossellini family includes Italians, Swedes, Afro-Americans, Indians, atheists, Catholics and Muslims.

Momentum Generation features new archival footage and raw interviews of surfing’s most legendary crew including Shane Dorian, Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, Pat O’Connell, Kalani Robb, Kelly Slater, Taylor Steele, Benji Weatherley and Ross Williams. The surfing icons over multiple years reflect on the complexity of their brotherhood and competition.
The Zimbalists (The Two Escobars) wrote and produced via their All Rise Films, and Justine Chiara, Lizzie Friedman, Tina Elmo and Colby Gottert produced. Exclusive: “I kept saying to myself, what has happened in America?” recalls a pained Rep. John Lewis of the 1968 assassination of the New York Senator in the new trailer above for Netflix’s Bobby Kennedy For President.
Nearly 50 years after Rfk was fatally shot at La’s Ambassador Hotel on June 5, 1968, the Dawn Porter directed four-part docuseries debuts on the streaming service on April 27. That launch of the interview filled and archival footage rich project actually follows a premiere of Bobby Kennedy For President at the Tribeca Film Festival two days beforehand, on April 25 in NYC.
As the first look above makes clear, the RadicalMedia, Trilogy Films and LooksFilms produced docuseries delves into the changes in the former Attorney General outlook and political beliefs over the 1960s and especially after the death of John F. Panellists discuss mentors, manuals and experiences.
The need for strong mentors, mutual support, and strong workplace boundaries were among the themes that emerged from an Iff Panama panel on the role of women.
“Start a collective of women because that’s the most powerful thing,” New York-based producer Laura Michalchyshyn said. “That’s how you start to make change. As a producer I ask who are the lead and who are the supporting roles. If women are attached to minor roles or demeaning roles without substance, I throw it in the trash.”

Panama City — Producer Laura Michalchyshyn attended Iff Panama for a 90-minute panel on The Role of Women in a Globalised World, also featuring the Swedish Film Institute CEO, Anna Serner, Brazilian producer Vania Catani (“The Movie of My Life”), and actresses Laura Gomez (“Orange Is the New Black”) and Judith Rodríguez (“Cocote”). The round table was moderated by fest director, Pituka Ortega Heilbron.
Speaking to Variety after the panel, Michalchyshyn talked about the panel and her current projects, including docu “Bobby Kennedy for President,” directed by Dawn Porter (“Gideon’s Army,” “Trapped”), which will world premiere at Tribeca on April 25. It has its global release on Netflix on April 27.
For the series, Porter relied on rare and never-before-seen archival footage – much of it digitized for the first time. Michalchyshyn’s other recent projects include comedy series “Crawford”, with creator/director Mike Clattenburg, and feature documentary “Momentum Generation,” about the surfing world with the Zimbalist Brothers.
