It was a little more than a decade ago when Nigerian movies were considered laughter gags because of how ridiculously bad everything about them was. From painful dialogue, tremendously poor CGI, and acting that makes you laugh at the hilariousness of the movie, Nigerian films or African action/thrillers in general would hardly be taken seriously. However, Donovan Marsh’s 2023 action thriller iNumber Number: Jozi Gold knows exactly what to deliver and how to appeal to an audience that’s used to Hollywood-level action. Starring his usual cast of Clementine Mosimane, S’Dumo Mtshali, Presley Chweneyagae, Fana Mokoena, Deon Lotz, Noxolo Dlamini, and others, it tells the story of two South African men who grew up in the same orphanage and went into the policing line. Moshoeshoe, aka Shoes, and Chili Ngcobo continuously fail to do anything substantial because of the raging corruption in the high ranks and the administratively suffering condition of the country.

Everyone seems to love zombies these days. When I student taught, my eighth graders all wanted to write zombie apocalypse stories, fueled by AMC’s Walking Dead, countless video games, and numerous movies. Of course, to me, a zombie is far more supernatural, far rarer and the stuff of myth and legend. As a result, I’ve never really cottoned to these undead that owe more to George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead than voodoo tradition. That said, every now and then one of these tales rises to the top and screams for your attention.
Max Brooks’ clever account World War Z was one of those stories, a survival journal that was nicely written. If there’s one thing that doesn’t mean much in World War Z, it’s looking presentable. This is costume at its worst, so to speak. Clothes that have been thrown through panes of glass or off the top of buildings, torn, stained and saturated with blood. This is the art of breaking down.
Breaking down, distressing, aging, these basically achieve the same result – they make clothes seem more believably lived in, or in the case of World War Z’s zombie hoards, believably dead in. Clothes in movies are broken down by many tried and tested methods. Professional ‘agers’ chisel with files and sandpaper, unpick seams, wash over and over, even burn and bleach. Importantly, these costumes appear used yet don’t fall apart when an actor wears them. It’s like cheese that has gone mouldy; it may look unappetising, but you can still eat it.

World War Z sequel planned? (Photo: Brad Pitt turns into a zombie-targeting axe-murderer in World War Z) Following the early success of Marc Forster and Brad Pitt’s zombie movie World War Z, Paramount Pictures "actively will turn to developing a sequel," claims The Hollywood Reporter, citing studio vice chairman Rob Moore. However, the Reporter article features no Moore quotes explicitly stating that Paramount has actually given the go-ahead to World War Z 2 — or whatever a World War Z sequel would be called. Co-produced by Paramount and Skydance Productions, the $220-$230 million-budgeted zombie movie (minus rebates and tax breaks, its official budget goes down to $190-$200 million) debuted this past weekend in North America and 25 international territories, collecting an estimated worldwide total of $112.21 million: $66.41 million in the Us/Canada (behind Monsters University‘s $82.42 million) and an estimated $45.8 million internationally (behind Man of Steel‘s $89 million and Monsters University‘s $54.5 million...

World War Z weekend box office: Monsters rule, but zombies are the big surprise hit (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) World War Z, Brad Pitt, and his living-dead pals have turned out to be the big (happy) surprise at the North American box office this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. In case Friday’s estimates are on target, the $190-$200 million-budgeted World War Z should collect $57-$60 million by Sunday evening, or about $10-$15 million more than many pundits had been expecting. Yesterday, World War Z opened with $25 million — about $5 million above early estimates — from 3,607 locations according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That figure includes $3.6 million from Thursday evening screenings. In case there’s a Saturday surge for Marc Forster’s Paramount-distributed PG-13 zombie movie, World War Z could actually go quite a bit beyond the $60 million mark. That’s good news for the studio and for producer Brad Pitt,...

World War Z box office vs. Monsters University vs. Man of Steel (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) The North American box office will be huge this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. You’ve surely read that elsewhere, and it’s no exaggeration. The combined gross of the top three movies alone — Monsters University, World War Z, Man of Steel — should hover around $180 million. Now, what remains to be seen is if there’ll be any dollars (whether Canadian or American) left for the dozens of other movies on North American screens. It’s like having huge supermarkets making little neighborhood stores disappear from view. But hey, that seems to be exactly what the moviegoing public wants. According to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University will easily top the domestic box office following a Friday gross around $25-$28 million, in addition to $2.6 million from Thursday evening screenings.

Director: Marc Forster Writer(s): Matthew Michael Carnahan (screenplay & screen story), Drew Goddard (screenplay), Damon Lindelof (screenplay), J. Michael Straczynski (screen story), Max Brooks (based on the novel by) Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, Fana Mokoena For many, reading Max Brooks’ World War Z was a redefining moment in how we view zombies. Far more than filler for movies that intend to pack as many head-shots and gore into 85 minutes, these zombies were unromantic, brutally lethal, and took their toll in every corner of the world, from the otaku so embroiled in his online life that he misses the apocalypse almost altogether, to the soldier on the front line, to the "survivors" that turn to cannibalism. Brooks' beautifully researched and realized collection of vignettes contained never before seen scope on the what if of a zombie apocalypse, and brought the threat, chillingly, into the readers’ own hands.

Brazil protests lead Brad Pitt to cancel World War Z promo trip in Rio Brad Pitt has canceled plans to come to Brazil to promote World War Z, which opens in that country on June 28, 2013. Pitt was expected to arrive later tonight, June 21, with daughters Shiloh and Zahara, according to the Rio de Janeiro daily O Globo. The reason for Pitt’s cancellation are the “Brazil Protests,” a wave of demonstrations that last night brought approximately one million Brazilians to the streets, protesting against police brutality, government and corporate corruption, dismal public services, and billions of public money being spent on state-of-the-art facilities for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games while the country’s health and education infrastructure is crumbling. With the release of Brad Pitt’s new film, we invite you to enter to win a copy of the World War Z soundtrack. The score is available now on Warner Bros. Records, featuring music by Marco Beltrami.
Beltrami, who brought the unique sounds of clacking teeth and wailing sirens to his score for World War Z, based all the melody, harmony and rhythm of the score on the U.S. Emergency Broadcast System signal siren, and then incorporated non-traditional percussive elements, like the sound of animal skulls teeth being mashed together, creating an atypical sonic palette, blending the rhythms of bone-on-bone with a full orchestra.

World War Z is easily the best time I’ve had at the movies so far this summer. Yes, I’ve heard all the stories about the huge production going over budget and all the reshoots and multiple script doctors, but for me, none of that was evident in the finished product.
Not being a fan at all of the zombie genre that has become so popular of late, I saw this more as a “global disaster” movie that had huge portions of the population affected and infected by a worldwide pandemic.
Brad Pitt is Gerry Lane, a former Un field investigator that now enjoys life as a family man with his wife (Mireille Enos) and daughters. In a hot second he goes from that tranquility to having to save his family and basically the rest of the world from marauding zombies. The infected folks are quite frightening as they...

"World War Z" promised to be some sort of ultimate zombie movie experience, and it's hard to call it that. But the first 25 minutes or so of this "Contagion"-meets-"28 Days Later" thriller will leave you breathless. And the rest of it serves up novel and often entertaining solutions to the various "zombie problems" that this overexposed genre presents.
Marc Forster ("Quantum of Solace") hurls us straight into the action. Barely five minutes into the film, ex-u.N. trouble-shooter Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), his wife (Mireille Enos) and two kids are trapped in Philadelphia traffic when all heck breaks loose. Whatever hints there have been about this "rabies" outbreak on the news cannot prepare them for the melee a tidal wave of the undead unleash.

"World War Z" is a subtle combination of a medical thriller and a horror film. Packed with fleetingly captivating emotional moments and mobs of panic-stricken people running from something we cannot see, the film evokes mixed reaction.
Inspired by, if not really based on Max Brooks' novel with the same name, the story is about zombie - Apocalypse.
Director Marc Froster wastes no time.

World War Z: Zombies movie offers ‘Breathtaking’ overhead shots [See previous post: "World War Z Review: Saved by Zombies."] These early scenes establish the speed and sheer number of undead and also unveil some visual go-to’s developed by Marc Forster (of the dreadful Quantum of Solace) and DPs Robert Richardson (who started the project) and Ben Seresin (who finished it and received sole credit). The most breathtaking are the overhead shots, oftentimes from a helicopter’s Pov, showing thousands of zombies filling the streets like floodwater. They figure prominently in the movie’s best section, when Gerry travels to Israel to investigate why the Israelis sensed the coming zombie invasion early enough to build a wall around Jerusalem. (Photo: World War Z zombies try to climb Jerusalem wall.) But since World War Z isn’t very interested in exploring the effects of a zombie takeover on social or religious order, the Israeli scenes, enlivened by eye-level shots of...

World War Z review: ‘Grandest zombie enterprise ever’ lacks dramatic cohesion — but zombies come to the film’s rescue (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) If there’s one thing harder to kill than a horde of zombies, it’s the unceasing horde of zombie movies, TV shows, books, and videogames. As recently reported by the U.S. Department of the Obvious, the undead continue enjoying their extended cultural moment. Unlike the mercifully fading vampire phenomenon, audiences keep responding to the tattered, groaning, living dead for reasons that go beyond any visual parallels to 9/11. Aside from just being cool, zombies are an unsettling reminder of our mortality and the lack of control we have over whether we live or die. They’re also a handy allegorical device that has been used to represent unchecked consumerism, Cold War paranoia, anti-environmentalism, and class disparity. For the Marc Forster-directed World War Z,...

I just came out of the Hollywood screening of World War Z at the ArcLight Theater and I’m stunned and slack-jawed – it is that awesome! World War Z is ridiculously good!! You’re rooting for every character in the movie. I have no words for how great director Marc Forster’s thriller is. Nevermind the “jump” scenes that will scare the livin’ daylights out of you.
Composer Marco Beltrami’s score is spot on. It had me teary-eyed in more than a few moments throughout. The writing was really smart, keeping the pace moving along in real time. Every scene is absorbed with no time to breathe in between transitions. No long dialogue scenes. No unneccessary back stories. You care about all these people because they are human beings like you.
Brad Pitt is so amazing – dude, seriously, where did you come from? How are you this good? He’s not over the top,...

Brad Pitt is full of bad news in this new clip from World War Z.
On an ordinary day, Gerry Lane and his family find their quiet drive interrupted by urban gridlock. An ex-un investigator, Lane senses that this is no ordinary traffic jam. As police helicopters buzz the sky and motorcycle cops careen wildly below, the city erupts into chaos.
Something is causing hordes of people to viciously attack each other – a lethal virus that is spread through a single bite, turning healthy humans into something unrecognizable, unthinking and feral. Neighbor turns on neighbor; a helpful stranger suddenly becomes a dangerous enemy. The origins of the virus are unknown, and the number of infected grows exponentially larger each day, quickly becoming a global pandemic.
As the infected overwhelm the world’s armies and rapidly topple its governments, Lane is forced to return to his dangerous former life to insure the safety of his family,...

Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Austin. Four cities in one day! Brad Pitt surprised fans across the Us on Thursday at the special screenings of World War Z.
Pitt told the excited audiences, “It’s the most intense thing you’ll see all summer.”
Have a look at how the day went.
Wouldn’t it be great if more celebs did this? Pitt stars and produces in what I hope becomes a successful franchise. While I’m not a fan of the Zombie genre, a World War Z series of films could be really different and unique.
Wonder where Pitt will be next? You can keep up with advance screenings by checking out fan photos tagged with #Worldwarz: Worldwarzmovie.Com/Screenings
Pitt, along with Angelina Jolie, have been all over the globe this week. The two were in London, Paris and Berlin for the world premieres of the movie.

Part of the initial appeal of the World War Z project for actor Brad Pitt was the heart-pounding action and race against time aspects of the story. “Those zombies are scary as hell and the movie, I believe, works on numerous levels,” says Pitt. “But primarily it’s complete summer fun and, frankly, something I wanted to do for my sons to enjoy.”
In the film, ex-United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Pitt) is given the option of choosing between his family and helping to stop the Zombie pandemic in this clip from World War Z.

Just as they did last year, South Africa's National Film and Video Foundation (Nfvf) will once again take a delegation of films and filmmakers to the Cannes International Film Festival, which takes place later this month - from the 15th until the 26th of May. The goal here is to demonstrate that South African cinema can compete on the international stage, and show that stories by South African filmmakers can resonate in the international cinema market place. One of the films that will be presented this year is a crime thriller titled Black South-Easter, starring Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena, Yu Nan, Deon Lotz, Thomas...

I'm appreciating the wave of black South African genre films we've seen in recent years, from How To Steal 2 Million to today's feature, Black South-Easter, which like the former is also a crime thriller, and everything else between. Black South-Easter is an upcoming South African crime thriller starring Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena, Yu Nan, Deon Lotz, Thomas Gumede and Zolani Mahola, directed by Carey McKenzie and produced by Tendeka Matatu. Here's its synopsis: As the annual “Black South-Easters” blow dark clouds over Table Mountain, bringing storms to Cape Town, the ill winds of corruption blow through the city’s townships. In a...

Just beneath this post, I said I’d highlight all of the feature-length films nominated for African Movie Academy Awards (Amaa) this year, which were announced over the weekend – Saturday, specifically, a day before the American Academy Awards voters, aka the Oscars, handed out its trophies.
Here’s the first of many Amaa highlights. It’s a good-looking South African film called A Small Town Called Descent. I initially alerted you all to the film last summer, when it made its word debut at the Durban Film Festival. I haven’t read much about it since then… until now, thankfully.
The film is nominated in the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor categories at this year’s AMAAs.
Directed by Jahmil Xt Qubeka, his feature film debut, the film’s synopsis reads: … follows three Scorpion agents in their investigation of xenophobic attacks that took place in a small town.

I wasn’t aware that the Durban Film Festival was under way (thanks to Bombastic E. for the tip). It actually ends on Sunday, August 1st. A number of the films screening have already been profiled and/or reviewed on this blog; others you’ve likely heard about. But I’ll scrub the entire list for any titles worth mentioning here… like the one featured in the video clip below titled, A Small Town Called Descent – its world premiere.
Synopsis reads: A Small Town Called Descent is the stylish debut feature from talented South African director Jahmil Xt Qubeka. The film follows three Scorpion agents in their investigation of xenophobic attacks that took place in a small town. A darkly humorous look at South Africa’s political dynamics, the film features powerful performances from the all-star cast of Vusi Kunene, Paul Buckby, Fana Mokoena and Isidingo’s Hlubi Mboya.
