Horror movies about food disorders are few and far between, or at least I haven’t seen many at all. But that is the subject that Shapeless tackles and it goes to some extreme places with it.
The film follows Ivy, a jazz singer who isn’t quite struggling but dreams of something bigger and better, while also suffering from an eating disorder that risks ruining not only her career but her whole life.
Visually, Shapeless is phenomenal. Her first feature film, director Samantha Aldana can obviously take plenty of credit for this but cinematographer Natalie Kingston deserves plenty of praise also. It is no surprise at all that she has a couple of noteworthy titles on her C.V. such as...

"I don't know if I'm ready to jump back on stage yet." Sony has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Down with the King, which originally premiered last year and is finally arriving to watch on VOD coming soon this summer. It first premiered in the 2021 Cannes Film Festival sidebar selection known as Acid, and it also played at the Deauville Film Festival and American Film Festival in Poland last year. Real-life rapper Freddie Gibbs stars as a famous rapper named Money Merc in the film. Disillusioned with the music industry and the pressures of being a celebrity, he leaves the city and his career behind to find himself in a small-town farming community in the Berkshires. This sounds great! The cast includes Bob Tarasuk, Jamie Neumann, David Krumholtz, and Sharon Washington. This is exactly the kind of premise for a film that I enjoy, and glad this isn't some dumb comedy.

“I just kept thinking, why isn’t anyone stopping us? Why didn’t anyone stop us?”
Amber (Laura Dreyfuss) is addressing her wife (Jamie Neumann), deep into a scheme that has spiraled beyond either one of these two white women’s control. On their way to the madness of this moment, they’ve demonstrated both a powerful and shocking inhumanity and the grim whimsicality of racism – the manner in which new rules can be created by the people in charge breezily, as if for their own amusement.
This is, and is not, “Atlanta.” The show, returning to the air for the first time since 2018, has jettisoned its cast for this installment, stepping outside the plot to tell a story of startling power. Leave it to “Atlanta” to return after nearly four years off with an episode featuring effectively none of its ensemble cast, save for a brief appearance by Donald Glover...

Hello everyone! We’re back to give you the lowdown on another week of home media releases, and while we don’t have a ton of titles on tap, there are still a few key releases genre fans are going to want to pick up this Tuesday.
If you missed it during its run on HBO, you can finally catch up with the first season of Lovecraft Country, as Warner Bros. is bringing it home on both Blu-ray and DVD. Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence is also headed to both formats this week, or if you’re in the mood for something a little more old school, both The Unseen and Slithis are getting the Blu-ray treatment on Tuesday as well.
Other home media releases for February 16th include Bad Impulse, Butchers, The Leprechaun’s Game and Mask of Thorn.

The following contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country.
We first meet the body that’ll come to be known as Hillary Davenport in “Whitey’s on the Moon”, the second episode of Lovecraft Country. The woman, Dell (Jamie Neumann), guards Ardham’s village jail food storage with two aggressive hounds, while waxing poetic about those meddling “Blacks.” We only see her for a brief few minutes but her disdain for Tic, Leti, and George is clear. The next time we see her in episode 5, she’s waking up in William Braithwhite’s bed, scared, and confused. When she looks in the mirror, she doesn’t recognize herself. She’s Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku).
At some point in the night, William (Jordan Patrick Smith) dosed Ruby with a magical potion that allows her to transform into a white woman. The transformation is purely physical, and utterly painful—”like being unmade”—so she retains...

This Lovecraft Country review contains spoilers.
Lovecraft Country Episode 5
A white woman (Jamie Neumann) wakes up in an unfamiliar place and doesn’t recognize herself in the mirror. She runs away looking for help, and in her distress, bumps into a Black boy. Black folks on the street look on in horror as cops threaten the boy for “assaulting” the woman. She assures them the boy was only helping. She’s shocked at white strangers’ concern for her, and Black folks’ fear of her, and realizes how powerful the weapon of white femininity is. Cops take her back to William, who cuts Ruby out of the white body while explaining to her that magic is real.
We’ve only spent a little bit of time with Ruby over the past four episodes of Lovecraft Country, but she’s made an impression even with her limited screen time. From the jump,...

Any monster that a sci-fi writer could dream up pales in comparison to the evil that might reside in human hearts, a fact made abundantly, terrifyingly clear in HBO’s Lovecraft Country.

Premiering Sunday, August 16 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt on HBO and streaming on HBO Max, the 10-episode series comes from showrunner and executive producer Misha Green and is based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff.
“Lovecraft Country” is described as following “Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. As a teenager, I walked the streets of Times Square, warned about its squalid, sordid nature. It was clear from the movie marquees that porn was readily available along with peep shows and prostitutes were visible on many street corners.
HBO’s The Deuce filled in the gaps in my knowledge by exploring what went on inside those buildings as it expertly showcased the pimps, prostitutes, porn producers, and mobsters whose lives were inextricably intertwined along with the politicians, cops, and reporters on the fringes. From David Simon, George Pellicanos, and Richard Price, they brought their expert eye and storytelling skills to the three seasons, covering 1971-1985.
The Deuce: The Complete Third Season is now out on DVD from Warner Archive and gives us a chance to reflect and salute the show. Produced by and starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, she inhabited Eileen “Candy” Merrell as a hooker who aspired to more...

"One last time?" "One last time." Sony Pictures has debuted the second official trailer for Bad Boys For Life, the long-awaited (unwanted?) sequel to the two Bad Boys movies (from 1995 / 2003). The first trailer dropped a few months ago, and didn't really impress anyone. This one doesn't exactly change things, but it is a better trailer. Reuniting the "bad boys" cops Will Smith and Martin Lawrence once again - Marcus Burnett is now a police inspector and Mike Lowery is in a midlife crisis. They unite again when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus. Also with Thomas Brag, Paola Núñez, Jacob Scipio, Joe Pantoliano, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Jamie Neumann, Massi Furlan, DJ Khaled, with Vanessa Hudgens. This feels so much like it's imitating Michael Bay's explosive style, but without any of his pizazz and technical prowess. I wish this looked better than it does.

Warning: The following contains spoilers to tonight’s series finale of HBO’s The Deuce.
In the end of the go-go 1970s-80s boogie of New York’s Times Square underbelly, and the whole rush of sex, cocaine and switchblades, George Pelecanos and David Simon’s HBO series about the rise and fall of the big screen X-rated film industry, The Deuce, didn’t end so much with a bang tonight, but rather, pillow talk.
The order from Mayor Koch’s office was bestowed: Lock up the bath houses and sex parlors, a move which ultimately paved the way for the Rudy Giuliani mid 1990s commercial high-end overhaul of Times Square and other Manhattan neighborhoods.
The jaw-dropping moments of the final season, set seven years after season 2 in 1985, had already occurred in previous episodes, specifically the murder of James Franco’s twin bad boy, Frankie, and the tragic suicide of...

Sony Pictures has dropped the first trailer for Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys For Life, and after watching it, I’m not sure why they made the movie. I was actually looking forward to this, but damn… it looks so uninteresting. The comedy falls flat, and it just doesn’t bring anything new or unique to the table. This is the definition of a cash grab movie.
It’s a shame because I liked these characters, and I liked what Michael Bay did with the first two films, but as you know, Bay did not direct this one. Bad Boys For Life was helmed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who directed a few films that I’ve never seen, and I’m not impressed by what I’m seeing now.
Here’s the synopsis:

"One last time?" "One last time." Sony Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Bad Boys For Life, the long-awaited sequel to the first two Bad Boys movies (from 1995 and 2003). Michael Bay isn't back for this, instead he's handed over the directing duties to Belgian filmmakers Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, with Bruckheimer still producing. Reuniting "bad boys" cops Will Smith and Martin Lawrence once again - Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) is now a police inspector and Mike Lowery (Smith) is in a midlife crisis. They unite again when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus. Also stars Thomas Brag, Paola Núñez, Jacob Scipio, Joe Pantoliano, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Jamie Neumann, Massi Furlan, DJ Khaled, with Vanessa Hudgens. Looks and feels a lot like the second movie - so I guess, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. Not sure if this will be any good without Bay.

Shots are fired in a new trailer for “21 Bridges,” starring Chadwick Boseman and J.K. Simmons, released during a Comic-Con panel today.
The heist-thriller, produced by Joe and Anthony Russo of “Avengers: Endgame,” stars Boseman as an NYPD detective Andre Davis who finds himself embroiled in a city-wide manhunt after two cops are accused of committing a string of murders. Mysteriously, Boseman’s character is the only one who can catch the killers, and following a tumultuous history with the rest of the detective team, he’s now earned the opportunity for redemption.
Determined to fulfill his duties, Andre blocks every exit out of Manhattan in an attempt to trap the alleged killers.
“Close the island,” he instructs two detectives. When the cops are confused, he clarifies: “Manhattan. The 21 bridges, shut ’em down. Three rivers, close ’em. Four tunnels, block ’em. There cannot be a version of this where these two aren’t found.

Spoiler Alert: The following piece has spoilers pertaining to tonight’s season 2 finale of HBO’s The Deuce, “Inside the Pretend”.
At a time when the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements are raising global awareness about women’s issues including sexual harassment, violence and female equality, HBO’s porn-industry drama series The Deuce walks a tightrope.
To call the series audacious in regards to its presence on TV amid today’s zeitgeist would be an understatement, both in the show’s drama and behind-the-scenes dilemma.
Well before The New York Times‘ Oct. 5, 2017 sexual allegation
exposé on studio mogul Harvey Weinstein reignited #MeToo, The Deuce was on the air, halfway through its eight episode first season order. But then following January’s Golden Globes, sexual misconduct accusations were made against The Deuce star and Ep James Franco (not connected with his work on the series). Nonetheless, The Deuce proceeded with a second season,...

‘The Deuce’: James Franco’s Good Time Twins Tell a Tragic Story of What Happens When Men Stay Silent
After the latest episode of “The Deuce,” it’s hard to argue against Maggie Gyllenhaal as the cast Mvp.
Playing Eileen “Candy” Merrell, a prostitute working without a pimp on the dark streets of ’70s Manhattan, Gyllenhaal is going through the ringer. Her character’s emotional spectrum is so wide, it would be miraculous if Gyllenhaal could convey half of what Eileen goes through, let alone the full wavelength seen in Episode 5.
In “What Kind of Bad?”, Eileen transitions from laughing at her date’s post-coital questions to pressing her battered face into a wall and weeping as a pimp reminds her of how often she’s been abused. Later, as Eileen puts on makeup to try to hide the bruises, she listens to a voicemail from her date, asking if she’ll be able to make a party that weekend. Gyllenhaal only flinches from the physical pain of her...

James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal become entrepreneurs in seedy 1970s New York City in the debut teaser for HBO series The Deuce.
Franco takes on dual roles as shaggy-haired twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, a gambler and bartender who become fronts for the mob in Times Square. Gyllenhaal plays Eileen "Candy" Merrell, an independent sex worker who transitions into the booming porn industry.
