In the late 1980s, a group of grumpy music journalism vets and fresh-faced 20-somethings came together for a radical media experiment: the launch of a cable news division programmed for, and largely run by American youth. On May 9, 2023 — 36 years after its inception — Paramount announced that the fruits of their labor, MTV News, had been shuttered for good.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to many of MTV News’ star reporters — Kurt Loder, Tabitha Soren, John Norris, Alison Stewart, Chris Connelly, SuChin Pak and Gideon Yago — and visionary executives Doug Herzog and Ocean MacAdams to reminisce about the glory days of the outfit, where one day you might be hanging backstage with Prince in Paris, the next chasing a pre-White House Bill Clinton through the snowy streets of New Hampshire.
For each of them, it was a bittersweet journey they were more than happy to take.

According to Variety, the series would serve as a remake of the movie, which was an adaptation of Pat Conroy’s 1986 novel of the same name. Similar to the film, the series would follow Tom Wingo, a man who travels to New York after his sister attempts suicide. (Credit: Courtesy of the Everett Collection) While in New York, Tom develops a relationship with his sister’s therapist, Susan Lowenstein, while also digging deep into past traumas and painful memories from his childhood. Currently, Tate Taylor is attached to write and executive produce the series with John Norris executive producing under their shared Wyolah Entertainment banner. Meanwhile, Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall are also set to executive produce the project which hails from Sony Pictures Television. Scripts are reportedly still being finished.

Apple is working on a “Prince of Tides” drama series, based on the best-selling 1986 novel by the late Pat Conroy, an individual with knowledge of project confirmed to TheWrap.
Barbra Streisand directed and starred in the 1991 film version in which Nick Nolte played Tom Wingo, a man who develops a relationship with his late sister’s therapist (Streisand) while coming to terms with his traumatic past. The film grossed 45 million on an estimated budget of 30 million and was nominated for seven Academy Awards including best picture, best actor for Nolte, and best adapted screenplay for Conroy and co-writer Becky Johnston.
Tate Taylor, who wrote and directed 2011’s “The Help,” will write and also executive produce the adaptation alongside John Norris under their Wyolah Entertainment banner. Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall also executive produce. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.

In her new movie “Breaking News In Yuba County,” Allison Janney plays Sue Buttons, a suburban housewife whose husband has just gone missing. And as the media, the cops, a mobster and her brother-in-law all come knocking, something is definitely fishy — but Janney has “done nothing wrong.” Honest.
“Ma” and “The Help” filmmaker Tate Taylor directs “Breaking News In Yuba County,” and the first trailer shows a wacky, madcap crime film in the vein of a Coen Brothers satire.
For instance, it’s generally not a good idea to go to the media first instead of the police if someone is really missing. And though Janney’s character might appear panicked, she’s certainly enjoying the newfound attention as everyone hunts for the truth.
“I am strong. I am important. I am enough. Don’t you think so?” a frazzled Janney says in the trailer. “I’ve done nothing wrong.

Filthy Rich and NeXt are both ending after one season on Fox, Deadline has confirmed.
The network will not renew either series for a second season, though both shows will see out their current runs. Low ratings — both shows are averaging a 0.5/3 in the adults 18-49 demo — and uncertainty are behind the cancellation of the series, which were both originally intended for summer runs.
NeXt has aired three episodes of its 10-episode order, while Filthy Rich has aired five of its 10 episodes.
Created by Tate Taylor, Filthy Rich stars Sex and the City alumna Kim Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux, the matriarch of a mega-rich Southern family famous for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After her husband dies in a plane crash, Margaret and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will — threatening their family name and fortune.

Fox is expected to have at least two new drama series on the fall schedule, Filthy Rich and NeXt, along with a full slate of animated comedies, while ABC is considering holding multi-camera comedy series United We Fall for fall. It is part of an effort by the broadcast networks to stockpile original content for next season as coronavirus-related Hollywood production is entering its third month with no end in sight. For that reason, CBS recently changed its scheduling plans for the latest season of The Amazing Race, leaving it in the can for fall.
When March rolled around, Fox still had its two high-profile midseason drama series, Tate Taylor’s Filthy Rich, starring Kim Cattrall, and the AI-themed NeXt, headlined by John Slattery, on deck with no scheduled premieres. Then the coronavirus outbreak escalated, shutting down all filming. In fact, NeXt became the first Hollywood production with a confirmed...

Ubach will play Yopi, Antonio’s (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) mother. She’s a fighter who knows how to win and a career gambler who’s always willing to take a chance.
Filthy Rich is produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Television and Fox Entertainment.

Aaron Lazar is replacing Steven Pasquale as Reverend Paul Luke Thomas on Fox’s upcoming Kim Cattrall-led Southern drama, “Filthy Rich,” in the second recasting for that co-star role.
The part was played by David Denman on the pilot of the series, a family drama from “Ma” filmmaker Tate Taylor “in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results.” The show is slated to debut at midseason on the broadcast network.
A Fox spokesperson confirmed Lazar’s casting to TheWrap, saying Pasquale left the project a week before the start of production Friday in New Orleans, citing personal reasons, not creative ones.

Georgia has been the recent center of Hollywood consternation, as the entertainment industry tries to balance its majority disdain for new restrictive abortion legislation there with its desire to keep business going in the bustling production hub.
But fellow Southern filming locale Louisiana is now coming into focus as a secondary, albeit smaller, battleground for the issue, after lawmakers voted in late May to ban abortion after the detection of a so-called fetal heartbeat.
The major film and TV studios that have since spoken up have largely taken the same approach to Louisiana – and the swath of other states rolling back abortion rights – as they have to Georgia, with many falling back on previously issued statements that indicate they would reconsider their decision-making should the laws go into effect.
So far, no productions have left Louisiana over the issue, according to Chris Stelly, the executive director of Louisiana’s Office of Entertainment Industry Development,...
