Cliver Barker's Rawhead Rex May Get a Reboot

Cliver Barker's Rawhead Rex May Get a Reboot
As a horror fan you might imagine I do just as much reading as I do sitting back and watching flicks on my couch. Well, maybe not. But I promise I do! I especially dig a solid short story, and one of my favorites is Hellraiser and Candyman creator Clive Barker's monster-on-the-loose tale Rawhead Rex. The story was initially adapted for the big screen by director George Pavlou back in 1987, and from the sound of it, the underappreciated monster movie might be getting a reboot soon. The latest issue of The Dark Side Magazine features a lengthy interview with Pavlou who says this about his original flick.

"After 30 years and with the film finally out on Blu-ray and the fans so enthusiastic for it, well, it's just pleased me enormously. For years I've been watching this horrible degraded, nasty 4K format version on YouTube and it was just depressing

Blu-ray Review – Rawhead Rex (1986)

Rawhead Rex, 1986.

Directed by George Pavlou.

Starring David Dukes, Kelly Piper, Hugh O’Conor, Ronan Wilmot, John Olohan, and Heinrich von Schellendorf.

Synopsis:

A farmer unleashes a demon known as Rawhead Rex, who proceeds to go on the rampage across rural Ireland.

There is an unwritten rule in horror filmmaking that you don’t reveal your monster too soon or too suddenly. All of the best horror movies take their time and, in a lot of cases, leave their villains lurking in the shadows so their dastardly deeds have more impact and shock value. In Rawhead Rex, based on the short story by Clive Barker, who also wrote the screenplay (or was at least credited with writing it), it takes approximately seven minutes for the titular monster to appear in all of his awkward, Halloween store costumed glory, which should give you an indication of what the filmmakers were going

Rawhead Rex – The Blu Review

Review by Roger Carpenter

Back in 1986 Clive Barker was a hot property. His successful, six-volume collection entitled Books of Blood were major international bestsellers, as was his first full-length novel, The Damnation Game. In fact, Barker was one of the early pioneers of the splatterpunk movement in horror fiction, helping to popularize the genre throughout the mid- to late-eighties and into the nineties. Many of his novels and quite a few of his short stories have been adapted for the screen, including Rawhead Rex, originally a short story collected in Books of Blood, Volume 3.

Unfortunately for Barker—and perhaps very fortunate for horror film fans—the first two films made based upon Barker’s work turned out so badly that he not only disowned the films but decided he would direct the next film himself. That film was the seminal Hellraiser (See? Good for us!). The two films Barker, to this day,

Rawhead Rex 4K Restoration, Theatrical Re-Release & Blu-ray / DVD Announced by Kino Lorber

In the 1980s, Clive Barker introduced horror fans to a world where pleasure and pain intertwined in Hellraiser (based on The Hellbound Heart), and in that same decade in Books of Blood Volume 3, he created a violent creature known as Rawhead Rex, who jumped to the screen to prey upon a rural town in George Pavlou's 1987 film of the same name. Now, 30 years later, Kino Lorber is bringing Rawhead Rex back to select theaters this summer with a new 4K restoration that will also be featured on a new home media release this fall.

The exact dates for the theatrical re-release and special edition Blu-ray / DVD of Rawhead Rex, as well as the home media release's special features, have yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more information is revealed.

In the meantime, we have the official announcement from Kino Lorber below,

The Unseen – 'Rawhead Rex'

The Unseen – 'Rawhead Rex'
Years ago, I remember some of my horror fanatic friends casually dropping the name “Rawhead Rex.” I recall thinking that it sounded like some bodily torture technique your brother would use to gain control of the television remote, not unlike an Indian Burn, Purple Nerpal, or Wet Willie. The larger question is, of course, why up until a few years ago I had never seen this movie. Simply put, Rawhead Rex has always gotten pretty shafted with distributions. Now most people know it vaguely as “the film where the monster pees on the priest.” Made in 1986 in the British Isles, Rawhead Rex is based on a short story penned by Clive Barker in his Books of Blood series. Directed by George Pavlou, Rex marks Pavlou and Barker’s second and last collaboration. Their first was on 1985’s Transmutation which Barker has disowned. He also has harsh feelings about Rex, stating
