Bob Barker was a pillar of television’s greatest generation.
Barker, the enduring host of “The Price Is Right” who died Aug. 26 at the age of 99, was a World War II veteran who trained as a Navy fighter pilot. But his destiny was not to fly missions in the Pacific theater. Barker’s service to his country came in the years after the war, when he and an elite corps of seasoned radio announcers laid a large part of the foundation for commercial television as we know it today.
Barker was a born broadcaster. He had a resonant voice, and his 6-foot-1 frame didn’t hurt in making an impression on viewers in the early days of grainy TV pictures. But his biggest asset was the gift of being to speak extemporaneously on live television – and make it look and feel natural while doing so.

With a resurgence of game shows on primetime television, “To Tell the Truth” made a fantastic comeback with ABC in 2016. Its latest reimagination, hosted by the beloved “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson alongside Mama Doris, has captivated audiences.
If you’re looking for an entertaining game show to tune in to with your family or friends, you can enjoy the revival of this classic on ABC on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. Alternatively, if you prefer streaming online, you can find the latest seasons and episodes on ABC and Hulu. Finally, if you’re interested in watching some of the initial seasons, you can buy them on Amazon Prime Video.
The show features a panel of four celebrities and three contestants. Of the three contestants, one plays the real character while the other two play impostors. Before the game begins, the host reads aloud something unusual about the real character that makes them identifiable.

The Alec Baldwin-hosted “Match Game” isn’t expected to return to ABC, as the Alphabet web begins to firm up its plans for its annual game show-heavy summer lineup.
Also unlikely to return are “Card Sharks,” “Celebrity Dating Game” and “The Hustler,” while “Celebrity Family Feud,” “Press Your Luck” and “The 100,000 Pyramid” are expected to be back.
The fate of “Match Game” had been the source of speculation in the wake of Baldwin’s accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the independent production “Rust” last fall.
But ABC’s decision to cancel “Match Game” is not related to that incident; “Match Game” hasn’t been in production since 2020, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic — and only aired two new episodes in 2021, which had been left over from the previous year.
The latest revival of “Match Game,” hosted by Baldwin, debuted in 2016, and ran for five seasons.

Sometimes, game shows are at their best when things don’t go according to plan.
James Holzhauer lost his 33rd game of “Jeopardy!” after wagering an uncharacteristically modest $1,399 in his final “Final Jeopardy” round on June 3. He was expected to beat Ken Jennings’ all-time highest winnings record of $2.5 million that day, but lost in a shocking turn of events to opponent Emma Boettcher. Holzhauer, a professional gambler, explained why he bet so low, telling The Action Network, “I knew I could only win if Emma missed Final Jeopardy, as there was no way she wouldn’t bet to cover my all-in bet. So my only concern was getting overtaken by third place, and I bet just enough to make sure of locking him out.”
Bob Barker Is a True Professional, Exhibit A: The host dealt with a dopey “Price Is Right” contestant who prematurely reveals the correct answer.

Anyone still around that remembers the Match Game from its first run? The show was first conceived and aired in 1962 and has been revived a few times over the past several decades. The original host of the show was Gene Rayburn, and the guest judges of the show changed from time to time as the program went on. As game shows go it was one of the more popular around and was one of those that many people would tune in to given a chance, but it did manage to wrap things up occasionally and go away for a

Eugene Jelyevich, known professional as Gene Rayburn, was a well known radio and TV personality back in the day and his one biggest claim to fame, the one that most people remember anyway, is the Match Game. Gene was also know for his ability to run a great show and have a great time while entertaining the guests and the audience. He was one of those once in a lifetime characters that don’t come around all that often and are special largely because they understand what it takes to survive and thrive in Hollywood. Oddly enough he didn’t move out

Rolling Stone just issued their list of the 'Top 100 Television Shows of All Time.' The rankings, which came from a survey of actors, writers, critics, and producers, includes all the shows you’d expect like Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The Sopranos. And a bunch of other programs that don’t start with the letter “S.” It’s a pretty comprehensive list and a reminder of how many great shows there have been even before what we’re now calling the Golden Age of television. Like any “top” anything list, there’s controversy. And we’re more than happy to dive into that topic. One thing we didn’t do is re-rank everything. If we did that, we’d be here forever and you wouldn’t want to read any further. So rather than that, we’ve just picked three shows that made the list that shouldn’t have and three replacements to fill those gaps.

Sometimes, TV game show moments head into the bizarre. Bob Barker Is a True Professional, Exhibit A: The host dealt with a dopey “Price Is Right” contestant who prematurely reveals the correct answer. It’s rare but not unheard of for “Jeopardy!” episodes to end with all three contestanta going all in on Final Jeopardy and losing. Here’s the most recent example of such a humiliating triple defeat from January 2016. You could always count on “Match Game” for some wild times, and one of the highlights was when host Gene Rayburn attacked the cameraman for not allowing Charles Nelson Reilly to prep.

There are no shortage of parodies floating around on YouTube. Some are funny, others, let’s just say those people should keep their day jobs. We’ve since come across one that’s not only a good laugh, but we’d actually like to see it come to fruition. The Love Boat was one of the great shows in the history of television. Where else could a bunch of D-list celebs fall in love, fall out of love and then fall back in love within an hour (less commercial interruptions)? With this parody, however, they take the show and turn it on its head. No longer is there Gene Rayburn, Jamie Farr or Charo, but it’s a cast of murderous fiends from great horror movies of yore. The video features ne'er-do-wells from Alien, Motel Hell and Salem’s Lot among others. The biggest laugh comes when you find out who the chief engineer is.

Remember when big-name stars didn’t want to do TV? Now they’re even clamoring for jobs as game show hosts.
Alec Baldwin (ABC’s “Match Game”), Taye Diggs (Fox’s “Hypnotize Me”), Jane Lynch (NBC’s “Celebrity Game Night”) and Anthony Anderson (ABC’s “To Tell the Truth”) are just some of the actors who now front major primetime game shows, in addition to their regular scripted work.
“You look at game shows from the 1970s and 1980s, they were somewhat cheesy,” Anderson said. “It’s different now. It’s a lot classier. It’s cool.”
Wayne Brady, who has hosted a “Let’s Make a Deal” revival for CBS since 2009, joked that “being a game show host was very much akin to being a local affiliate weatherman – and no offense to local affiliate weathermen, but there’s a stereotype.”

By the bedpan of Gene Rayburn! Adam McKay.s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues got off to a decent start over the weekend, banking an estimated $40 million over its five-day frame but failing to unseat Peter Jackson.s second Hobbit film, The Desolation of Smaug, which held on to the top slot. Now, if the Anchorman sequel had limited its release to the weekend (instead of spreading the wealth to Wednesday and Thursday), we might be writing a different headline. For now, it.s a good start to a sequel that hopes to have legs. Could it have legs that extend to a third chapter? It.s the lingering question we have been kicking around the CinemaBlend offices. Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Dumb Dora was so dumb that she didn’t realize this week marks the 40th anniversary of Match Game‘s ’70s incarnation. That’s right: The game show that brought you Gene Rayburn’s Neanderthal posture, that funky think music, and the exploits of Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Richard Dawson and many more is 40 years old. It’s an irreplaceable treasure. There is no show like it, and I’m including other celebrity-dappled games like Hollywood Squares and Tattletales in that estimation.

Jane Lynch sings for your Constitutional rights, and the wardrobe is flawless.
Even if you’re not a Glee fan, you must admit that Jane Lynch repeatedly, emphatically proves she’s awesome. Winning Emmys? Check. Delivering a killer commencement address at Smith College? Check. Being over thirteen feet tall? I seriously think that’s true. Check. She’s also talked about how obsessed she is with Eileen Brennan in Private Benjamin, and that’s hero-worthy too.
Now, watch as she croons with Jordan Peele (of the very underrated Comedy Central series Key & Peele) about the separation of church and state. The variety show glamor is unchained. Lynch and Peele are wielding microphones longer than anything Gene Rayburn ever handled, and I’m pleased to announce that the communion scene is the naughtiest bit of Catholic imagery since Bon Jovi’s “Living in Sin” video.

Game shows owe much of their success to their predictability. When turning on Jeopardy! each night or spending a Saturday morning watching the classics on the Game Show Network, one knows exactly what to expect: some kind of gimmick, a big winner.
A show with a winning formula can be on the air for decades, and all that really changes are the hairstyles. Still, it’s the moments that take viewers (and, often, those involved) completely off-guard that can immortalize a show.

Los Angeles – Richard Dawson, who had distinction in two areas of television – in his supporting role on the 1960s sitcom “Hogan’s Heroes” and as a game show host in the 1970s with his trademark of kissing contestants on “Family Feud” – died Saturday from complications due to cancer. He was 79.
Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm to an American father and English Mother in Gosport, Hampshire, England in 1932. After running away from a poverty-ridden childhood to join the Merchant Marines at the age of 14, Dawson pursued boxing and entertaining once he was discharged. He first went on stage as comedian Dickie Dawson, but revised the name to Richard Dawson once he became established.

Betty White makes a memorable entrance at the Friars roast in her honor. (Photo: Marion Curtis, Starpix/Associated Press)
By Eddy Friedfeld
Television legend Betty White was the target of this year’s Friars Club Roast, held in New York’s Sheraton Hotel.
From an eclectic dais that ranged from Matt Lauer, Liza Minelli, and Dick Cavett, to Dominic “Uncle Junior” Chianese, to The Office’s Oscar Nunez, to former New York star John Starks, to boxing great Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, to Best Picture The Artist’s Uggie the Dog, the event was up to its usual biting and merciless humor, poking fun at the guest of honor’s age and sexual proclivity.
Barbara Walters served as Roastmaster, marking the first time in Friars history that women were both host and subject. “Yesterday, I was talking to the President of the United States,” Walters said, referring to Barack Obama’s appearance on The View,...

Mad Men again focused on a popular topic 'round the AfterElton water cooler: masculinity! In all its attractive, sporty, sexual, confusing, and hilarious forms! Don Draper worked out a new wardrobe choice, Roger Sterling wowwed us with wuthering words, Pete Campbell tried to be a hustling psycho like Don (and blew it!), and Lane Pryce showed us that he's the hottest pugilist stuck 30-40 years in the past. Let's count up the five most fabulous moments of "Signal 30" and fan ourselves when it gets sweaty.
1. Introducing Don Draper: Sport-o Edition!
Fact: Megan's fashionista instincts are nothing but a good thing. She can look like Marlo Thomas or Jeannie C. Riley on any given day, and last night's episode revealed another trick in her book: Her influence extends to Don, too. Look at our dashing Valentino in his croquet-ready Gene Rayburn gear! Flashy-smashy, indeed. I assume Megan made him wear the...

Ibm's computer Watson tied with the show's all-time winner in a special challenge tonight. In this week's Newsweek, Daniel Stone writes that the real match may be between Watson and Trebek.
Alex Trebek bounds across the blue-toned stage, past the giant board of clues, eager to take questions from the studio audience. It's somewhere around the 6,000th episode of Jeopardy! he has hosted, and interacting with the crowd, he says, is his favorite part of the job. As he approaches the bleachers, he stops short. "Oh my!" he bellows when he sees about 30 fourth-graders in the top three rows. "We usually have mostly senior citizens, but today we have young people!"

Trebek, of all people, would know. For 27 years, the dapper emcee has hosted the dinnertime quiz show, whose nightly audience of 10 million is larger than the population of Arizona.

Encino, CA - While Charles Nelson Reilly is beloved for his time on Match Game, there’s more to this actor than Dumb Dora answers. He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Later in life he directed several plays on the Great White Way. While many actors sum up their lives in thick tomes, Charles created a one-man show. He was a stage performer so this was the best way to distill his experiences for an audience. The Life of Reilly captures his final performance before his passing in 2007.
After playing the festival circuit and a limited theatrical release, Life of Reilly is finally out on DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes. You can take Charles every where. In edition to the feature film, there’s tons of bonus features including...

Move over Gene Rayburn, Charles Nelson Reilly and Brett Somers -- a new Match Game is coming to town! An updated version of the classic fill-in-the-blank game show is being prepared for the TBS network.
Match Game debuted back in 1962 and ran for seven years with genial Rayburn as host. A slightly different version of the game show started in 1973 with Rayburn returning as host. The revival wasn't very popular with viewers until the usually dull questions were replaced with those that suggested double-entendre humor.
While some star panelists changed week to week, regulars included outrageous Nelson Reilly, caustic Somers, and debonair Richard Dawson (Hogan's Heroes). Recurring panelists included Orson Bean (Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman), Fannie Flagg, Vicki Lawrence (The Carol Burnett Show), Nipsey Russell, McLean Stevenson (M*A*S*H), and Betty White (The Mary Tyler Moore Show). This popular version ran until 1979 and is currently a mainstay of the Gsn schedule in reruns.
