“It grabbed my heart and just shook it,” reveals Audra McDonald of Adrienne Kennedy’s searing play “Ohio State Murders.” The six-time Tony Award winner initially participated in a reading of the script over Zoom, one of many plays producer Jeffrey Richards organized during the pandemic to keep folks engaged while theater was shuttered. “When we finished, I couldn’t breathe. I was so stunned, and my soul was so shaken by what I had just read that I couldn’t let it go,” admits McDonald. The actress immediately agreed to star in the searing drama, eventually earning her 10th career Tony nomination. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Even though it just recently debuted on Broadway, “Ohio State Murders” was first performed over 30 years ago. Its central figure, Suzanne, never leaves the stage and endures a horrific, unceasing wave of racism, misogyny, and violence. “I know that if I...

The state of streaming services in the last few years has exploded, filling in nearly every niche imaginable with not just platforms to appeal to mainstream film lovers or select genre fans. While Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, Apple+, Paramount, and the newly-launched Max have served those who are looking more for a general smorgasbord of content, those looking for more indie fare are left with little choice beyond specific platforms that are tailored for those looking specifically for that type of material. One service looking for a chance to offer up under-the-radar content in that mindset is the free-with-adds platform Tubi, which has originally served as the home for the bottom-of-the-barrel fare but is looking to upend that with originally-licensed material including this new Indonesian feature from Australian director Stuart Simpson.

Beetlejuice will end its Broadway run at the Marquis Theatre on Jan. 8, 2023, producers announced today, making the musical the second high-profile production in recent days to announce a post-holiday departure.
Last Friday, The Phantom of the Opera announced that it would end its 35-year run in February, a casualty of a market still soft from the Covid pandemic’s impact on tourism, among other factors.
Though Beetlejuice, directed by Alex Timbers and starring Alex Brightman in the title role (played by Michael Keaton in the original 1988 Tim Burton film), hasn’t had anywhere near the longevity of Phantom, its lifetime on Broadway has been, as producers concede, unconventional, to say the least.
The musical opened at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on April 25, 2019, receiving so-so reviews and getting off to a slow start with audiences. With the Shubert Organization hoping to clear the venue for the revival of The Music Man with Hugh Jackman,...

At the request of company members of Broadway’s The Minutes, producers announced today that audiences will be required to continue masking through the play’s final performance on Sunday, July 24, nearly a month after Broadway at large will shift to a mask optional policy.
The Minutes, at the Studio 54 theater, becomes the second production – following American Buffalo – to extend the mask mandate through their closing nights. (American Buffalo at Circle in the Square closed July 10.)
According to recent reports, six of the 11 cast members of The Minutes were out sick with Covid in mid-June.
The mask optional policy was announced by The Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, earlier this month. The new policy allows individual productions to set their own protocols.

The Broadway revival of American Buffalo, performed at the in-the-round Circle in the Square Theatre, will continue to require audience masking through July 10, the production’s closing date.
In a statement released today, producers said, “Due to the close proximity of the audience to the actors as a result of the intimate size of the theater and the staging in the round, the production will continue to mandate audiences to wear masks in this space, despite the recent industry announcement of masking-optional across other Broadway theaters beginning July 1st.”
Earlier this week, the Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, announced that the mandatory audience mask requirement that’s been in place since theaters reopened last fall will be replaced in July with a mask optional plan. The policy will then be reviewed on a month-by-month basis.
